"Stonewall" Johnson Refuses to Testify to Senate Committee

EPA Administrator Stephen Johnson, who has notoriously avoided congressional testimony, declined to testify to the Senate Judiciary Committee next week.

The hearing on the EPA's refusal to provide Congress with documents relating to the health risks of global warming was scheduled for July 30, but has now been cancelled by Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT).

"Administrator Johnson declined our invitation," said Chairman Leahy in a statement. "The letter we received from the EPA this week gave no reasons for his refusal to appear before the Committee."

This week the Senate Environment and Public Works Commitee, chaired by Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) heard from EPA whistleblower Jason Burnett on the White House's interference with EPA decision making.

Leahy stated that he was a referring Johnson's refusal to testify to the EPA Inspector General. "Like Karl Rove's refusal to appear before the Judiciary Committee in response to a congressional subpoena, and Josh Bolten's refusal to appear to provide documents we subpoenaed," Leahy continued in his statement. "This administration follows. . . its own imperial executive style."

Thank goodness Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee John Conyers (D-MI) is holding a hearing on the "Bush Imperial Presidency" tomorrow.

I trust the "thank goodness" comment at the end is snide irony. I want to see these pigs in jail, not empty hearings.

Maybe the Senate Sergeant At Arms could pay Mr. Johnson a visit...

nah... That would be too...

Too what?
Either Congress can compel testimony, or it can't.

The Bush administration clearly believes that Congress has NO oversight authority whatsoever. Unless Congress, that includes the Honorable Senator Leahy, actually enforces its oversight authority, then Congress has ceded such authority forever.

Use it or Lose it.

It's no wonder that the approval ratings for Congress are as abyssmal as Bush's -- Americans want Congress to act like a co-equal branch of their government and kick some bush ass.

alas dear democracy... I knew you well...

I'm am so tired of congress failing to uphold the law and enforce overisght of the executive branch! Surely, no one expects anything to come out of the HJC hearing tomorrow. Rep. Conyers will neglect his duty to the constitution and not even rule on Rove and the others contempt charges. Conyers is so inept and corrupt himself! Conyers needs to be replaced and held accountable for his inactions as he is complicit to the bushies...

Leahy canceled the hearing? That's it? He didn't send the Sergeant-at-Arms to drag Johnson into the hearing room? Why ever not? I'm suffering from contempt of Congress too.

Thank goodness Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee John Conyers (D-MI) is holding a hearing on the "Bush Imperial Presidency" tomorrow.

John Conyers, who just like Nancy Pelosi, wants impeachment off the table, and doesn't want to do anything to actually change the status quo, wants to use this all as merely political fodder.

We should all be screaming for impeachment, are tell John Conyers to shut the hell up.
