AK Gov. Says Staffer Pressed for Trooper's Firing

In a press conference this afternoon, Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) conceded that someone inside her administration pressured the state's Department of Public Safety to fire State Trooper Mike Wooten, Palin's former brother-in-law, who is now embroiled in a bitter custody battle with Palin's sister.

Palin's statement is the latest in what has come to be known around Alaska as "Wooten-gate." The scandal began on July 11, when Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan was fired from his post with little explanation, a move that quickly raised questions in Alaska.

A few days later, Monegan came forward, stating that he had been pressured by those around Palin to fire Wooten -- but had refused to do so -- a choice that he believes led to his sudden dismissal. Palin denied Monegan's accusations, and a Legislative Council has appointed a special commission to probe the matter.

In today's conference, Palin said that state troopers had taped a phone call from Frank Bailey, Palin's director of boards and commissions whom she appointed last August, in which Bailey inquired about having Wooten fired.

At the press conference today, Palin distanced herself from Bailey's actions claiming that he acted alone, but the recordings suggest that he was acting at her instigation.

"The Palins can't figure out why nothing's going on," Bailey said in the recorded phone call. "So Todd and Sarah are scratching their heads saying 'Why is this guy representing the department, he's a horrible recruiting tool.' You know? So from their perspective everybody's protecting him. . . Audi probably disagrees with me, Walt [Monegan] does and I understand it's really touchy, but I just want you to understand that cops that use excessive force or go out of the lines, they just have no tolerance, because they've seen the facts personally."

Bailey has yet to comment. Calls to his phone went directly to voice mail.

Late update: Audio of Frank Bailey's recorded phone conversation has been released on the governor's state website, you can listen to it here.

Bailey commented on the local news this evening that he was NOT asked by the governor to press the issue. Can't say for sure one way or another if he's just covering for her - he'll likely fall on his sword.

By the way, Trooper Wooten is a known piece of shit - I've heard of numerous instances where he abused his power.

Part of what came out in the divorce was that he used his taser on his 11 yr old son - because the kid wanted him to, not exactly an act of maturity that most of us expect from a law enforcement officer.

All brawn, and no brain?

http://www.ktuu.com/global/story.asp?s=8838947

Towards the bottom of that story:

"Late Wednesday, Bailey affirmed the governor's statement that neither the governor nor her husband asked him to make the call.

"I know we keep using the word pressure but nobody pressured me to say anything," said Bailey.

How convenient. Just as the legislature starts investigating, she gets the AG to parallel that investigation and "discover" the tapes and calls first, then holds a quick news conference to distance herself from them

Must've been kinda how Nixon felt when he realized investigators would eventually find the tapes. "Oh, crap...."

Wow. Are ALL Alaskan Republicans corrupt?

oh... oops!

That's a silly question. Why should I think that Alaskans are any different from the rest of the Republican Party!

It seems that Alaska GOPers are a gift that keeps on giving.

Has Monica Goodling moved to Alaska?

Wasn't she mentioned as a possible veep for McCain?

What a f**king backwater. Sorry Alaskans, but your state capital is like Boss Hogg's family rueunion.

AH, but we ARE trying to clean it up.

Unfortunately we had an oil service company that brought new meaning to the words 'bought and paid for'. Our politicians were not only 'cheap but easy'. They were so busy being 'big men', they forgot to be 'honest men'. THEY FORGOT WHO THEY WERE WORKING FOR.

Lots of people knew what was going on but couldn't prove it. And lots of people tried. Thank goodness the FBI came in and was able to find the proof.

So far, FBI 7, felons 0

Alaskans are watching this closely and we are still waiting for the others 'shoes' to drop.

Can you say Benny Stevens, Frank Murkowski, Randy Rudrich?

Here's hoping..........soon.

Juneau's mostly a tourist trap port of call for cruise ships. Nice scenery nearby, though. See Mendenhall glacier before its gone.
What's Palin's position on global warming?

user-pic

Well, this story shows why McCain would pick her for VP. It proves she has real GOP values.

The next President of the United States Barack Obama

MCCain picks this person with scandel going on. JUDGEMENT

Trying to tap into the media created riff with HRC and her female’s voters by choosing someone even more out of touch of women’s issues then John McCain. Nice job

McGruff's pick is purely a ploy (perhaps a smart one) to get elected and has nothing to do with her qualifications to be president, much less vice president.

Whereas Biden could assume the mantle tomorrow, Ms. Palin, I am sorry to say, is like McCindy, a "trophy" runing mate.

If Clnton backers fall for this one, then they will do more to undermine their own "feminist" gains than any man could ever do.

If Clnton backers fall for this one, then they will do more to undermine their own "feminist" gains than any man could ever do.

Stop believing your own propaganda. It makes you sound so Republican - particularly when you use "feminist" as a pejorative.

Clinton's backers aren't pissed off because a woman didn't get the nomination.

They're pissed off because Obama's backers called them morons, idiots, racists, cunts, whores, assholes, and so on.

They're pissed off because of crap like that Photoshopped 1930's lynching scene showing a smiling Bill and Hilary superimposed within the white lynch mob.

They're pissed off because you short-sighted fools made it personal.

If McBush wins this thing you will have only your own nastiness to blame for it.

As for this Alaskan twit: The really good news here is that McBush is trying his damnedest to lose this election, in spite of your best efforts to hand it to him.

"They're [I'm?] pissed off because of crap like that Photoshopped 1930's lynching scene showing a smiling Bill and Hilary superimposed within the white lynch mob."

You can dig up every cheap internet slime ball ever pitched against HRC, and blame them all on the millions of Obama supporters who see past the egocentrism and character disorders demonstrated by the Troubled Couple, but the fact remains that poisoned by her arrogance and sense of entitlement, her campaign died a nasty and destructive death which even the best efforts of HRC and WJC (who, as always, remain subject to the ruling influence of the holes in their respective buckets), has not, repeat, not stopped damaging the party.

As you so stridently demonstrate (if you are a Democrat, that is).

...And you can whistle past the graveyard, pretending you have no culpability.

It's not rape as long as you give her a kiss and tell her to just get over it, I guess.

Culpability? Rape? Susan Brownmiller, you helpless bundle of cliched responses, how you haven't changed.

You are too twisted with rage to reach. So I'll just say, "Up yours," even tho my real sentiments are less polite-- and this is a freebie because I've already been punished for it.

user-pic

I think this is barking up the wrong tree. There are suggestions of domestic violence here and it is not unreasonable for a new Governor, who has defeated the prior Governor from her own party, to wonder what the State Police are doing as to such questions.

That this youngster would be a heartbeat from the presidency as Vice President to a 72 year old president, is the issue.

I don't see much of a scandal here. It barely rises to the interest level of a small-town community newspaper.

I don't think this is real.

user-pic

The Rove model is now complete.

Palin has demonstrated that little things like laws will not get in the way of her attempt to abuse her power, even when that power is very limited.

What an odd pick. Weak, without depth of experience, no demonstrable record of good judgment, embroiled in a Bush-like scandal and she'll appear like McCain's other younger women. Strange.

I think one strategy is to frame her as the President, especially since death is chasing down McFrankenstein.

Can anyone actually see her that way? It's VERY difficult.

What would she do? What do you think about this?

Be specific.

Nail her (forgive the pun).

Rovian strategy has finally been perfected. Now, it is the time for Democrats to hammer home why McCain is dangerous.

If Clnton backers fall for this one, then they will do more to undermine their own "feminist" gains than any man could ever do.

Double-post. Hate it when that happens.

that makes two of you

Yeah, it makes you look twice as stupid and petty.

Seriously, stop ascribing the actions of a fe overzealous Clinton haters to the Obama campaign and the huge majority of his supporters that respect Sen. Clinton. You sound little better than them by keeping this annoying narrative going. We both want the Democrat to win, put the Hillary as a victim crap to rest.

Dorn76, you have been one of the worst offenders. Please spare me the feigned innocence.

Dorn76, you have been one of the worst offenders. Please spare us the feigned innocence, when you've been one of the most obscenely verbal of "the few".

And again, to his point, what in God's name do any of the rhetorical excesses of his have to do with Obama and whether you'll support him? There have been legion random Hillary supporters on the Internet and elsewhere saying plenty of terrible things about Obama and his supporters since February 2007. That has never once been on my list of reasons why I opposed her. I never once imagined that she was directly or vicariously responsible for anything said about Obama by anyone other than, say, people who actually worked for her campaign.

And yet I frequently see this as a reason some people are still angry at Obama and refuse to support him. I just don't get it. I really don't. I'd really like someone who feels this way to take a stab at explaining what one has to do with the other. Whenever I ask, however, I invariably get the sound of crickets.

Are you trying for 4X?

well, I haven't participated in it at all, but I agree that we need to be united, and I agree that the idea of putting this vicious bimbo forward as some symbol of progress just because she's a woman is a complete insult to what Hillary has managed to accomplish and represent whether she's a woman or not. I think she demonstrated real class and poise in her speech a few weeks ago, and again at the convention - this from a big time Obama supporter. Hillary, please impale this little backwater witch.

user-pic

The Republican convention looks like it will be a real soap opera.

At the moment, I can only see this as an enormous blunder for the McCain camp. But, who knows what really lurks in Karl Rove's mind? He's the master of turning positives into negatives and negatives into positives.

user-pic

Maybe Rove and his minions figure that a lot of women will vote GOP, betting on the fact that McCain won't finish out his term, thus putting a woman at the top

If so, that's some deep, Machiavellian, twisted sh*t right there.

Why this chick? Elizabeth Hasselbeck wasn't available?

The Palin pick seems to me to be based on the policy boxes that's she's managed to check during her thin tenure in office- policy positions which shore up the republican base's concerns (however misplaced) about where McCain's heart really lies. Pro-life? Check. Anti-Gay-rights? Check. Talks the NRA line? Check. Wants to open up ANWR? Check. (Which, incidentally, is why many Alaskans are pro-drilling- that cushy *check* they receive in exchange for the defilement of their state.) In other words, she's said the right things, will keep the base happy, motiviated and reassured that McCain's one of them.

I think the Obama-Biden camp's new strategy should be to emphasise the team nature of the presidency (after all, during the Bush-Cheney years, we've practically had a co-presidency.) Biden Complements Obama, Obama Compliments Biden.

Re: "They're pissed off because Obama's backers called them morons, idiots, racists, cunts, whores, assholes, and so on."

Really?

I looked for this sort of thing during the heat of the primaries, attended a couple of large rallies (in April-May in Ohio) and saw absolutely none of it. The few examples overt, verbal sexism, that I could dredge up from the internet were, in all probability, GOP plants (eg,. the "Iron my shirt") thing)

user-pic

Maybe McCain had some money on this one;

We all know that Intrade Political Futures got the Joe Biden pick right last week -- how well did it do with the GOP pick?

As it turns out, not so good. THEY COMPLETELY MISSED THE VEEP PICK.Not just off by a little, but off a ginormous amount.

As we have previously suggested, the political futures markets essentially follow the polls. There is very little wisdom amongst the crowd.

Here's how the Palin VP futures Traded. As of yesterday, you could have bought her VP futures for 4 cents on the dollar:

(Man, am I hoping for an Admiral Stockdale moment)

Beautiful! Cheney in drag!

She is in bed with Big Oil in a way that makes Bush/Cheney look like pikers. AND she advocates the aerial hunting of wolves. Also she has no problem using state government for personal vendettas.

Biden will eat her alive in the debates.

In the picture TPM has up on its front page, she looks uncannily like Geena Davis. Maybe this played into the decision. Tap that unconscious "presidential" image that we have from "The West Wing".

I think you mean Geena Davis' show "Commander in Chief." Unless you are saying that Palin looks like Martin Sheen.

user-pic

One can almost hear the gears working in the McCain brain:
Biden has an entree with women because of VAWA? I know, I'll select a VP who stood up for her sister! And she's a woman, so she'll get all those Hillary votes!

I read earlier that the VP choice was one he was making all on his own, without any input from advisors, etc. Poor man, he's just sealed his fate with this selection.

An Alaskan Republican.
What’s her relationship to Sen. Ted Stevens?

I haven't seen her debate anything, but hopefully she'll turn out to be a radical right as an attempt to offset McCain.

It will solidify McCain's base a bit, but that's not where this election is going to be won.

Hopefully she's radical enough that independents throughout the country will RUN away from her.

Appears that McCain's experience/pork barrel spending arguments just went out the window.

Let's ask her about Schiavo.

John McCain did not pick Palin on his own. He was told by the oil lobbyists - who own McCain - that he has to choose her. She held a position in a state government agency that dealt with oil and gas after being the Mayor of a small town and before being Governor.

Palin is Big Oil's candidate. They are banking on the fact that McCain won't make it through an entire term and then their girl will be in control.

"Fire up those drills boys, we own the world, and they can't stop us now. Get those damn polar bears off my rig."

It would be a sad day for the world if the oil company had more control of the White House than it already does.

No oil(wo)men in the White House. Say no to Palin. Say no to McCain. Keep the promise and hope alive.

McPOW will use her as a human shield.

John McCain is the definition of a Kept Man.

His wife owns all the houses which he lives in. She has all the money, the corporate jet, the partial ownership in the Diamondbacks. John gets an allowance.

Now, John has been told by the oil/gas lobby that his VP pick is Sara Palin, Governor of the ANWAR Drilling Company, whose day job is signing official state papers in Juneau.

John has been a kept man since Viet Nam. (Cheap shot? Maybe, but since he intends to make sure everyone in the world knows he was a POW, let's keep it in context.)

user-pic

"I was standing at the hors d'oeuvre table, young, shy, not knowing anybody, when suddenly this awfully nice-looking Navy captain in dress whites was kind of chasing me around the table. I thought, What's going on here?"

-Cindy McCain, relating how she first met John McCain, 18 years her senior, who was then married to another woman.

This choice makes me wonder if it is somewhat related to the rumors of McCain's zipper problems. Not that he's been chasing Palin around a table, but just that he let's his male part do his "thinking" for him.

user-pic

Good God, can you imagine that voice giving the State of the Union Address? She sounds like a girl not yet out of high school.

Re: Confusing "Commander in Chief" for "The West Wing" Oops. Sorry, they all blend together. :-)

Hi,

Long-time lurker, first-time poster. I am a committed Obama supporter. With that intro, I need to point out that, sadly, Sarah Palin is no Dan Quayle. Check out this link to a 2007 Charlie Rose interview:

http://www.charlierose.com/guests/sarah-palin

Unfortunately, she's smart and articulate.

Andrea Mitchell is endorsing Palin, and suggesting that she already has won the clinton supporters and women votes.

Chuck Todd is almost buying it!!!

And MNSBC still refuses to speak about Obama!!!

Unbelievable...

"They're pissed off because Obama's backers called them morons, idiots, racists, cunts, whores, assholes, and so on."

I say anything like that, nor did I hear anything like that during the campaign. I have seen some posts around the internet which were extremely rude and nasty to people who were upset when Hillary lost.

For the most part, I have seen Obama supporters welcoming the Clinton supporters:

http://electionforchange.blogspot.com/2008/08/open-letter-to-clinton-supporters.html

But I agree with the rest of your comment.

Hi.

Long-time lurker, first-time poster, committed Obama supporter.

I need to point out that, sadly, Sarah Palin is no Dan Quayle. She's smart and articulate in this 2007 Charlie Rose interview:

http://www.charlierose.com/guests/sarah-palin

I am watching the all media coverage of Palin. We spent all week being bombarded by repubs giving us their spun thoughts. I see very little opposing opinion from Dems being aired.

When Obama picked Biden the MSM made it their business to run McCain attack ads against Obama’s pick. I have yet to see any MSM outlet run the Obama campaign powerful response to McCain’s picked. Sometimes I expect too much

I just heard Andrea Mitchell say this totally steps on Obama’s speech from last night, it takes the attention away from last night. It’s being ignored because dolts like Mitchell are ignoring.

Palin, with two years experience as a governor? Find a random utube video of her talking, and turn the sound off.

Republican VPs have often been people whom even the republicans wouldn't want for president. The handlers often have had a handle on the VP in case he needed to be removed - look at Agnew. Bush Sr chose Dan Quayle, a laughing stock. Cheney chose himself to be VP, but it was always clear that he was the worst of two evils and would have to be impeached before Bush.

If McCain wanted a pregnant runner-up beauty queen, he would have done better to go with Shelly Marie Tambo, much more fun to watch.

user-pic

POW McCain is hoping there won't be enough time to uncover Down's Syndrome Palin's connections to the corrupt Repug machine owned by GOP nominee Tubes Stevens.

I do think they believe that she's shielded by her disabled child.

They are going to try to run out the clock.

I think that Palin's weak spot (like Geraldine's) will be her husband. He was shown on the local news denying that there was any "pressure" on Monhegan and his people, but admitting to "informing" them of the existence of a problem (the trooper's continued employment).

In the process he looked like someone who has a furtive and calculating dark side that I'll bet Sweet Sarah doesn't know anything about (at least that's what she'll say).

that "Alaskan twit" is 44 years old to Obama's 46, was a small (approx 6000 people) town mayor to Obama's part time senator for Illinois ( constantly running for his next job!) and 2 years fulltime !! Govenor of Alaska to Obamas 3 years (partime?) 2 years of which he spent running for his next job in the US senate....again
So in my book she is a year ahead in terms of "experience".
She had the guts to speak truth to power!! She resigned in protest her job as Ethics Commissioner of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission and filed complaints against powerful republicans in her own party!. As her governor has job approval ratings of more than 80% in her home state! Inspite of being against Gay marriage she had the guts to use her Veto to block legislation that would have barred the state from granting benefits to the partners of gay state employees. In effect, her veto granted State of Alaska benefits to same-sex couples. Yes she is pro life but she is also for reducing abortions by providing pregnant women with support and resources so that they have a real choice when they have to make that awful awful decision.
Obama voted present, skipped votes or capitulated when asked to walk the talk and refuses to give a straight answer to straight question . (above my pay grade!?!)
his job approval...a part of the US senate!?!lets not even go there . And what precisely is Obama's foreign policy experience!?!
Do your own research rather than buy into the hate on this site .
She is not as qualified as Hillary but she is definitely as qualified as Obama.
Oh and she'd probably kick his ass in basketball as well seeing that she was Captain of her school basketball team!

...and she's a creationist who doesn't believe the scientific facts about global warming. Those factors trump everything else you just cited. Good God, negligence on the global warming issue on the part of a world leader occasions a crime that transcends genocide - the destruction of entire planetary systems. A crime so unthinkable we haven't even named it yet; to quote Gabriel Garcia Marquez, "...many things lacked names, and in order to indicate them it was necessary to point."

Don't give her or anybody else a pass when they opportunistically espouse "rights" for gays and lesbians but oppose gay marriage. That's a fucking crock, and every politician who goes there (regrettably, Obama too) has done the wrong thing. Read the Massachusetts Supreme Court decision and then tell me that opposition to gay marriage but supporting (X) equal rights for gays and lesbians isn't akin to "separate but equal" race segregation in education.

Anybody who's enough of an intellectual zombie to buy into creationism isn't anywhere near qualified for high office...or, if they don't actually believe it but would use it politically...just as bad.

As has been said elsewhere on this site, she's Tonya Harding without skates. And apparently it takes a lot of baggage to travel to Washington all the way from Alaska.

Is corruption in Alaska so routine that the casual attempt at union tampering with which the conversation begins--to learn the secret bargaining position of a public employees' union--goes without mention?

She seems to fits right into the currant admin what with McSame wanting to continue right on into a 3rd McBush term, she can bring in a fresh face er scandal thats brewing & ready pop!! Ah yes, wonderful pick McShame. This aught to go well with the special investigators putting up their report at the beginning of Nov. (perfect timing)
Also, why did you just throw the best argument you had on Obama out the door. Never to return after this morning, "Experience"!! Gone, no longer viable, can't use it, nope, what you had been running your campaign on, *Experience*, this morning that talking point went *Poof*, I get the feeling McSame and the guys running his campaign are bout as fast as a herd of turtles stampeding through peanut butter.
Seriously.

This is a link worth reading. See what her AK colleagues think of her readiness:

http://www.adn.com/news/politics/story/510249.html

My favorite is "She's not prepared to be governor. How can she be prepared to be vice president or president?" said Green, a Republican from Palin's hometown of Wasilla. "Look at what she's done to this state. What would she do to the nation?"

The unfettered grandiosity of Candidate John McCain: Why would anyone who is 72, whose father and grandfather died of sudden unexpected heart attacks at ages younger than him, select a Vice Presidential running mate, a potential President, who has no national or international political experience? We are at war. Is it because he has delusions of immortality? Is he willing to gamble with the future of the nation? McCain’s decision shows a lack of wisdom, judgment and awareness of his own limitations in the face of his Presidential size ego.

After reading all these comments, I can only say if this Republican couple somehow gets elected, we are all in for another four years of demoralizing stress, more wars for our military-industrial complex to profit by, and "Goodbye Roe vs. Wade, Hello Backalleys and Coathangers"!
Come on, People! Let's do our best and vote and pray to whatever and whichever, that Barack gets in. If not, Heaven help us all; we deserve what we get.
