Jailed Detroit Mayor Faces New Assault Charges
Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was supposed to be released from jail today, but instead he faces a new set of felony charges relating to his allegedly shoving a sheriff's deputy into his partner last month. The two deputies were reportedly trying to deliver a subpoena to a friend of the mayor when the incident occurred.
Attorney General Mike Cox -- the first Republican AG in 48 years -- charged the Motown mayor with two counts of felonious assault for "assaulting ... police officers in the furtherance of their duties."
The new charges are separate from those relating to the "Text Message Scandal," which resulted in indictments for obstruction of justice and perjury.
From the Detroit Free Press:
Kilpatrick attorney James Thomas said they were going to fight the new charges as they fought in court today with "law and common sense." He said of the new charges, "it's just an allegation, let's take it step by step." At the suggestion the latest case was on the fast, track, he laughed and said, "Mike Cox could dismiss it in one day."
Kilpatrick comes from a strong political family in Detroit. His mother is U.S. Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick (D), who is currently running for re-election.
Late update: The DFP reports that Kilpatrick was released from jail and arraigned on his new charges this morning. The mayor was fitted with a tether, and forced to pay $50,000 bond in order to secure his release on the two new felony charges.
Kilpatrick has also been forbidden to travel, which includes his planned appearance at the Democratic National Convention later this month.

Kwame's the 'bad seed?'
Kinda Detroit's answer to Maine's Bush kids.

-Being charged with new felony charges does not mean he will stay in jail, as the lede strongly implies. He has been charged as predicted but still was and is released. (as of 2pm Friday)
-I'm not sure what AG Mike Cox being a Republican has to do with this case, although that is an interesting statistic of years but as it's presented it sounds like Michigan only elects Democratic AGs. That's not the case, we in MI just don't like new people period.
There's only been three AGs in the last 47 years (not 48, technical foul there; former AG Frank Kelley - who earned the moniker Eternal General, as opposed to AG Alberto Gonzales who got the moniker thanks to a missed translation - was appointed to office in 1961 and re-elected through 1998, followed by current MI Gov. Jennifer Granholm's four-year term and Mr. Cox's two four-year terms)
I don't think the Republicans ran a serious candidate against Mr. Kelley since the 1980s.
We've also had only about six or seven governors since WWII.
-Another point, the mayor's mother is only up for election in the technical sense of the word. She represents one of the most consistently strong Democratic areas of the nation (Detroit votes about 90-98 percent D)and barring an independent candidate (one of her primary challengers has announced intentions to run independently but the legal ground to do so is shaky at best)
-Strong political family, certainly used to be, but extremely weak now. A cousin of Mr. Kilpatrick placed a distant third in a state house primary and Ms. Kilpatrick would have lost her primary had not two candidates drawn so many opposition votes in different directions. With the political heat so hard on the family now I'd say they're about as politically potent as a certain Stevens family in Alaska.
Even many of the staunchest Kilpatrick backers are in the papers today telling him to all but jump off a bridge (get it?)

Sounds like good old fashioned police misuse of power directly equal to unethical threat of politcal power.

Having been to Detroit recently, they need more than this clown going away. That city is in need of some one who can do something for it. Talk about urban plight. It was downright depressing there.

I beg your pardon, I would Thank You very much. The Bu$$h kids/family are domicile to the State of Texas, they only vacation infrequently up here in the Great State of Maine. And that is only because the Bert Walker family bequeathed this criminal family of freeloaders an oceanside estate in Kennebunkport. We up here only hope that a fall season gale force storm tears that despicable house located on that peninsula out to sea and leaves only ocean washed granite ledge in its place. Then we can only hope the Bu$$h Crime Family permanently vacations down in Paraguay while playing a round of golf with their neighbor the Reverent Sun Yung Moon.
