Palin Could Prompt McCain Flip-Flop on Drilling

Since he began his campaign, John McCain has abandoned just about every position on which he had displayed his independence from President Bush. But his opposition to drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) had, until recently, been perhaps the last remaining evidence of the maverick McCain.

His choice of Alaska governor Sarah Palin as his running-mate could well end that. The Weekly Standard this week described Palin as "the nation's most prominent advocate of drilling in ANWR," the wildlife refuge that environmentalists see as one of America's most precious natural wilderness areas (though she admits it would take at least 5 years to have any).

In a June interview with CNBC, Palin judged that McCain was likely to "evolve" into supporting drilling. That now looks prescient. Earlier this week, McCain told the Standard that he's considering flip-flopping on his anti-drilling stance, and that he plans to talk to Palin about the issue.

Indeed, it looks like the Bush administration is too pro-environment for Palin. Earlier this month, the state of Alaska sued the federal government for listing the polar bear as an endangered species.

Palin's husband, Todd Palin, is a production operator for BP on Alaska's North Slope.

Update: The oil industry seems to agree. The Institute for Energy Research, an industry-backed group, just sent out the following message to reporters: "FYI: John McCain's selection of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate naturally places ANWR energy production front and center in the policy debate once again. Visit IER's website for facts on ANWR oil and gas estimates, arctic production technologies, wildlife
statistics, and more."

Sarah in embroiled in some huge scandals in Alaska for corruption on her part. She has NO experience whatsoever. What organ was McCain thinking with????

This is good for Obama though!

Most people don't know this information. Women don't vote in elections base on gender or race.
Palin is no Hilley Clinton. She will not get the loyal dem vote that supporter Hillery. Hillery-Rush Limbaugh vote may be up for grab. By the way Palin was Rove and Limbaugh's pick. McCain is no Mavrick---he followed the extreme righ-wing off the cliff.

Jeez, can't you spell Hillary's name right even once? You misspelled it two different ways!

One more thing: Just a few months ago she asked during a public interview what a VP does! She honestly didn't know.

That comment is way out of context. Its actually quite favorable to her in context. I wouldn't bring it up.

Other than Holy Joe Lieberman & Willard Romney, this is the best news imaginable for Democrats.

Can you imagine a former mayor of a town of 9,000 who's now a scandal-plagued governor in just her second year in office and one who believes creationism should be taught in all our schools becuase evolution is only a theory on stage debating Joe Biden.

Big Oil. Creationism. Virulently anti-choice. Scandal-plagued as we speak. A heartbeat away from the Presidency?

LOL.

Prompt? It's called providing cover. She will open McCain's eyes to the truth. He will be converted. This is such a sham.

This is unbelievable news! Does McCain honestly believe that adding a self-described soccer mom to his ticket is going to attract disgruntled Hillary supporters? He's delusional! Biden will chew her up and spit her out during the VP debates (if she makes it that long).

BTW: It's the 3 yr anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, McLame's birthday, AND Palin's 20th wedding anniversary. Those republics really have a great sense of timing.

Here's the question that should be asked (but won't). If we resume off-shore drilling should it be used to lower gas prices for drivers, or to pay citizens of the states nearest the rigs, like they do in Alaska?

Doesn't this really make McCain's energy position more awkward?

Especially with the Stevens trial happening while he runs for reelection, I'm shocked they would go here. All eyes are going to be on Palin's home state already ... and not in a way that makes the Alaska GOP look good. Even if Stevens comes out of it without being convicted, for low-info voters: Alaska=Corrupt=Palin=McCain.

It seems ANWR drilling now can become a corruption issue as much as an economic one ... way easier to get into a voter's gut.

The more I think about it, the more I'm starting to believe McCain meant to pick someone else and named the wrong person by mistake. You know how confused he gets.

Why wouldn't McCain flip on ANWR? He has flip flopped on just about everything else.

Given that Senator McCain's two main talking points, reasons why we should choose him over Senator Obama, have been experience and judgment, this would seem to take those arguments off the table.

I guess the new one will be "I have a woman on my ticket!". Gov. Palin may have just given us a hint of another one; in her speech this morning, she referred to Senator McCain as "John F. McCain".

The Republicans now have a "dream ticket". However, it is probably a dream ticket from the Democratic perspective.

McCain just lost, Penn. Navada and Utah, and Ohio.

This woman is under an investigation, what will the right wing think about McCain's judgement when they find out that he picked and setup a woman for attack. Her husband also works for BP Oil.

In May 2008. Palin’s Chief of Staff, Mike Tibbles, resigned to “spend more time with his family.”

Tibbles declined interviews about his decision to resign.

After a very brief period of “spending time with his family,” Tibbles signed on to be the campaign manager for indicted Senator Ted Stevens.

Is there more to Tibbles’ departure?

This woman may be charged for corruption. With this hanging over her head her name may not make it on the ballot, McCain may be forced to pick another candidate before November.

Typical republicanism, to use one another for mutual cover.

In this case of both McCane and Palin, both under multiple scandals, it works to their advantage because scandals always receive positive coverage in the MSM.

Happy McSame Friday everyone.

Oh, this keeps on giving: sucks any free air from drifting to the Cenocratic Convention, or simply Obama.

The one item that gets all others, though, is that everywhere else in the world, people are talking about Putin's comment yesterday on CNN about the all-but-certain involvement of the White House in starting unrest in South Ossetia.

200 dead later, it was all to provide a photo op for Mc Cane as a war president, and the manufactured event caught Obama flat-footed. But McBush looked smug as the potemkin pres. candidate. A bit manchurian too.

Woopsies...:

...Democratic Convention, or simply Obama.

..because scandals always receive positive coverage in the MSM for Re-tards.

Finally, I forgot to connect Karl Rove, who was supposed to be responding to a Congress subpoena, was in Georgia just prior to the start of unrest.

Ditto for Cindy McSame. And then there is the lobbyist for the Georgia government which is really our man advancing our intrication in the Caucasus. All involved in creating a covert international incident with at least 200 dead.

Nice going there, Mc Sames.

As an Alaskan I hope she's only running to put Alaska issues on the national stage.

I think she's cynical enough to know McCain isn't going to win and is using this VP running mate thing as a way to propel Alaska forward.

She's thrown Alaska under the bus when we needed some real governance.

Yes she signed the Alaska Gasline Inducement Act, but who is going to pay for it? Where is the funding, the planning? Was it all for show?

I wonder if appointing the former mayor of metropolitan Wasilla, in a lame brained attempt to get women to vote for you, in these dangerous times, if you're 72 years old, could be construed as putting politics ahead of the national interest.

Given her support for Creationism, I wonder if Palin will let it slip that we should drill for oil in ANWR because...God put it there 7,000 years ago, and He wants us to use it!

Judging by MP3s of Sarah Palin's past interviews, it's hard to be impressed.

Further evidence of the onset of dementia in mccain. Have Dick Lugar and Chuck Hagel spoken out about this yet? Joe Biden will absolutely pulverize her in the debate.

He would have had a better chance with Paris Hilton. McCain is his own worst enemy in this campaign.

The radical right "social conservatives" just took "Guns, God and Gays" off the shelf stuck it in our faces, and will now proceed to try and shove it down our throats and (in to our bedrooms) What does McCain get..he gets his "war chest" stuffed to overflowing, the 527 smear machines "filled to the brim" with funneled right-wing money, from Evangelical "church donations" the White House, unless "we" (all those who do not want to see the science book replaced by the Bible, or who believe in a womens right to choose (The Supreme Court, McCain choose more right-wing ideologues who will strike down Roe v Wade), freedom and religion, animal activists and environmentalists, gays, lesbians and Democrats) unite like never before, and stop him (and them)!

Democrats generally and liberals specifically seem to be the most hate-filled, bitter and angry people on the face of the earth. I'm not shocked at the response on this board considering the source. BTW David Bowman, it wasn't 7,000 years ago; it was about 4,000 years ago and the flood put it there. America will never be what it once was, the divide between values and ideals seem to get wider and wider everyday. With the sinful nature of man, I can't blame you for your social values and beliefs. With no belief in God, you have to look out for yourself, because who else do you have looking out for you and yours? From a conservative man from Ohio, I can tell you I wasn't voting for John McCain PRIOR to this announcement. Now I'm voting and trying to convince others to vote McCain. Regardelss of your hopes and dreams, this does inspire the evangelical base of the GOP, and Obama's inaguration is now officially on hold.

At least Palin made it on her own, unlike Hillary Clinton who came to power on the coattails of her husband.

Perhaps this was not "McCain's" pick. She certainly fits the agenda of those on the far, far, fundamentalist right. She, like many on the right, rose in office ostensibly to battle corruption, only to be embroiled in scandal themselves. It might be wise to consider how she might be used, and by whom, if she were to reach the highest level of government. This seemingly "absurd" pick may not be about McCain at all.

I am so thrilled with McCain's choice. She is clearly the antithesis of all liberal positions. She once said that not only should abortion be illegal, there should be no exceptions even in the case of rape and/or incest. She may have become a squeak more moderate, but maybe not.
She's also one of those Alaskans who eschews the environmentalist perspectives with vigor. (You'd think that would be rare in a place of such jaw-dropping natural wonder but, think again. It's so VAST, a small mind can see a little drilling here and there won't impact much of anything. That's as deep as the prevailing thinking dives for many residents. Ms Palin's mind is among the smallest.)
McCain has hardly used careful consideration in this choice; at least that remains consistent with the rest of his campaign.
Palin is not an offering for the thoughtful sorts.
She fits the superficial agenda, though, and what else has McCain got? Palin is right wing, a moral relativist, a woman, under 50, and a brown noser.
Can't wait to hear more and more about this cutie pie.

The key flip flop here is on what McCain thinks is important in a candidate. Democrats should stop with the "one heart beat away from the presidency" line, which is at best a wash in the eyes of the general public. What they should hammer home is "After making experience the central point of his campaign, McCain has once again flip flopped. Just as he has flip flopped on Bush's economic policy, immigration, campaign financing and so much more."

Then, if he flip flops again on ANWR, it becomes a part of the larger narrative.

"Democrats generally and liberals specifically seem to be the most hate-filled, bitter and angry people on the face of the earth. I'm not shocked at the response on this board considering the source. BTW David Bowman, it wasn't 7,000 years ago; it was about 4,000 years ago and the flood put it there. So when I run into the man with hate in his eyes, screaming as he foams from the mouth, ranting of evil, baby killers that should be put to death as he shoves a bible in my face and nearly knocks me over as he threatens me when I take a 25 year old cancer patient to a clinic for treatment, I should assume he is a liberal democrat because no holier than thou god fearin' evangelical would do that...or the woman who calls my husband a Christ killer because he is Jewish, or the people that start in on their psychotic rants when confronted with the concept that humankind is in charge of their own destinies; Or the people interrupting a funeral for the serviceman or woman back from iraq in a body bag screaming that it is a just death because of evil homosexual behavior....those people must be liberal democrats as well....and the minister who tells his parishiners to pray for torrants of rain to fall as Obama gives his speech in an outdoor stadium; or the talk show host that calls for rioting to be set off in the streets to burn Denver during the convention...Rush is a liberal democrat too?
And the man in the white house that ordered the murder of 1,000,000 Iraqi citizens and the deaths of over 4100 service men and women by manipulating a war on lies and fear mongering; or the VP that outed a CIA agent and pretty much a death sentence for those working with her inside and under cover in Iran and other countries...those two must be liberal democrats as well....
That lame accusation and claim you are anything but a hate-filled person yourself; That divisive hostility espoused is EXACTLY what is creating the rift in the very structure of this country...The bleed out thay may never heal because people like you keep picking at the scabs to keep the blood flowing. I run into hate speech and nastiness on a daily basis from people claiming that Jesus is their savior and they were "born again",...I have been called everything from the whore of babylon to a succubus by "God-fearin" and "saved" folks who cannot tolerate the idea of a woman that stands on her own and has the power and courage to stand on her own. A woman who does not want or need anyone or anything to do it for me. I count on me and mine and my Universe respects my power and my acknowledgement of that power which comes through me and is for me.....I am one with the universe and it is one with me. AND that universe screams through me to say "no more!!"....that which screams to stop the blood from flowing and the deaths in the desert for more oil and power...that will hold a mirror to the faces of all those claiming to be better and holier and more chosen than others.....
You, the "conservative" are not conservative but are radical....Radical Right and probably more radical than those 'liberal democrats" of whom you speak with such disdain
You do not have the patent on all knowledge. You were not the one chosen by the Universe to be Omnipotent and you are not any less or any more than any of the rest of us.
Humanity may be screwing up but you, sir, are as big of a screw up and as bitter as all the rest.
You just seem to be choosing to be ignore-ant, staring at your own shadow and screaming at it to listen.

First, I agree with you, I am no more holy than anyone else. I am a sinner, I am separated form a holy God by my sinful actions. The difference is when I claim that I am genuine and I have accepted that and have asked for forgiveness for it and have recieved it. I liken nealry every other part of what you said above to a child without good parenting being told no for the first time and someone meaning it. It is no more than a kicking screaming rant. Noise. The truth is how ya like those $4-$5 gas prices? Good thing we went to Iraq for oil otherwise they would be, oh wait, they are $4-$5 per gallon. EXACTLY HOW MUCH OIL HAVE WE GOTTEN OUT OF IRAQ? Oh yea, ZERO. Looks like the facts get in the way of your opinion. Obviously there are idiots in all walks of life and in all areas of faith (even in lack of faith), but look at the example of idiocy outside of the RNC even today. What I was saying in my original post is that the rift between those of us with traditional "normal" values and the far "libs" will continue to grow, not heal. The future of the USA is at stake and I'm not willing to give up. One last thing, give up 2000 and 2004, you lost, move on (.org).
