Stevens Makes A Second Statement
Around 5 PM Alaska time, Sen. Ted Stevens' office issued a second statement on his arraignment earlier in the day in federal court.
From the Anchorage Daily News:
I am pleased that the Judge has set a speedy trial date, which should allow ample time for a decision before the general election. I am looking forward to this trial as a way of finally showing the truth - that I am innocent. We have a Bill of Rights and a trial by jury in our country to protect our citizens - so that every person has their day in court.
I am humbled by all the outpouring of support, expressions of friendship, and offers of prayers. This process has lasted for more than a year, causing great distress to my family and confusing the Alaskans who have put their trust in me for more than 40 years.
When all the facts come out at the trial, Alaskans will know that I continue to be a dedicated public servant and that I am working hard for them every day.

Stevens has been in the Senate for a long time and has learned over this time that the laws which apply to us commoners have no bearing on the important folks in Washington.
This statement is a testament to Steven's belief that he really didn't do anything which would jeopardize his reign in Washington...
Sad thing is... it just may not...
These clowns (both dems AND reps) have spent 200 years protecting THEIR jobs, not ours, and it really won't matter if Obama OR McCain is elected... the mobsters in Washington will continue to protect their own at the detriment to this nation's democracy, and for those who disbeleive this, just look at the democrats refusal to censure Rangel. Is this a statement that "We will clean up Washington" or "We will continue to protect our mobsters"?
Just one more reason to get rid of them ALL... or tell our children the truth... they will lose their freedom because WE have always chosen the mobsters over the honest folks... IMHO

But Teddy if you are found guilty the Dems will send you a box of candy and a bouquet of flowers to decorate your cell. LOL LOL LOL
Thanks for your ignorance and greed Teddy.

"We have a Bill of Rights and a trial by jury in our country to protect our citizens - so that every person has their day in court.
Except, of course, if you're an alleged terrorist, in which case we can throw you in Gitmo forever without a trial.
I love how conservatives only truly appreciate the Bill of Rights when they need to personally avail themselves of its protections.

The brazen thing about this is that Stevens was one of the notable votes against restoring habeas corpus, which he now quotes as his right. A fitting (read:karmic) response would be for him to sit in jail through the entire campaign (or the rest of his life) awaiting trial. But fortunately for him, many people in this country still believe in Constitutional rights.

He's an idiot. Two months before an election he wants to plaster his name over the headlines of every Alaskan paper and blog with details of this trial: witness testimony, cross-examinations, introduction of evidence - does he think the government will just fall completely on its face?
Even if he is eventually acquitted - enough dirty laundry will come out during the trial to sully his name forever in Alaskan politics.
Every tidbit from this case will be one more piece of ammunition for a Begich advertisement. This case will be a gift that keeps on giving.

Ah, but he has been in office so long he doesn't REMEMBER what it is to be treated like us 'common folk'. He has been 'entitled' so long, he thinks it is normal.
I heard a story about him on an aircraft in first class. Apparently there was already someone sitting in the seat that Steven's 'always' rode in -- and decided he wanted. He told the stewardess to 'make them move'. She said 'no'.
He said 'don't you know who I am?'
She said, 'yes, you're the person that is going to sit in THAT seat over there'.
