White House Scraping the Bottom of the Barrel on Legal Options?
Could the White House be getting desperate in its dramatic legal battle with the House Judiciary Committee? It certainly looks that way, as they scramble to delay Harriet Miers' congressional testimony after the court's recent denial of their request for a stay.
Yesterday, HJC Chairman John Conyers (D-MI) set Miers testimony for September 11, but the administration isn't going down without a fight.
From the AP:
The Bush administration had already indicated it would appeal but Justice Department lawyers said Wednesday that they will ask the court to step in quickly and temporarily put Miers' appearance on hold while the appeal plays out. It's a risky move for an administration that has spent years trying to strengthen the power of the presidency.
Yesterday, TPM's David Kurtz caught up with Senate Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT) at the Democratic National Convention and got his take on the new developments in the Miers case unfolding at the HJC.
Leahy made it clear that this battle wasn't just going to end in the event of an Obama presidency. "I remind them," he said, "I'll still be chairman next year."

This is what I have been hoping for all along. Like many I also have been dismayed with the apparent little progress in investigating the criminal doings of the Bush administration. But these investigations will go beyond Bush's term as Leahy has reminded us and team Bush will no longer be able to use the DOJ as a tool to cover up his criminal doings.

"I remind them," he said, "I'll still be chairman next year."
The democrat leadership has already shown that they have no intention of fulfilling the promises they made before the last election.
I learned as a child that you can never trust liars to be honest... and the Democrats have proven themselves to be just as good at lying as the Republicans. Too bad so many voters rely more on wishful thinking than realism. Wishing for something to happen does nothing to better the odds that it WILL happen...
History, after all, IS a good teacher. Perhaps we need to rely on history a little more and our fairy grandmother a little less... IMHO

I have a little more faith in Leahy than most of the other democratic leaders...but whats to stop Bush from issuing a "blanket immunity" pardon...? Conyers better have some impeachment hearings in mind.. or that is exactly what that crooked bunch and Bush will do just before exiting the empty "shell" of our White House..pardom every body

Pardons only stop prosecution, they don't stop an investigation. They take away the 5th amendment protection from having to answer when it may incriminate you in a crime.
If Bush pardons, the recepients can stillbe called to answer befor congress.

How about Qatar or Dubai? Didn't those good folks already save his young ass several times during his time as a cheap oil-patch hustler?
