AK Judiciary Committee Votes to Authorize Subpoenas in Trooper-Gate, Including for Todd Palin
The Alaska Senate Judiciary Committee voted today to authorize Trooper-Gate projector director Hollis French (D) to issue subpoenas requested by investigator Stephen Branchflower. The subpoenas are part of the continuing investigation of Gov. Sarah Palin, and include a subpoena for the testimony of the First Gentleman, Todd Palin.
Branchflower requested the power to issue thirteen subpoenas, including a request for the testimony of the governor's husband because he is "such a central figure" to the Trooper-Gate controversy, he thought "one should be issued for him."
The committee debated for over two hours, with Sen. Bill Wielechowski (D) pushing to keep politics out of the investigation and moved to pass the motion in the senate.
Exact wording of the motion from the Senate Records:
SENATOR WIELECHOWSKI moved:Pursuant to AK 24.25.010(b), I move that you be authorized to issue subpoenas to the following individuals and for the following documents: Frank Bailey, Diane Kiesel, Annette Kreitzer, Nicki Neal, Brad Thompson, Michael Nizich, John Bitney, Ivy Frye, Kris Perry, Janice Mason, Todd Palin, Randy Ruaro, Murlene Wilkes; cell phone records for Frank Bailey for the period of February 1, 2008 through March 31, 2008. This authorization is contingent upon concurrence of the Senate President.
Passed 3 to 2.
Sen. Charlie Huggins (R) crossed the aisle, voting in favor of the motion, and joined Wielechowski in his plea to move the investigation forward.
"I see all this duck-foot action under the water," Sen. Charlie Huggins (R) said. "And I'm here, on a break from my moose-huntin' trip, to say let's just get the facts on the table. "
Sen. Lesil McGuire (R) attempted to amend the motion so that the subpoenas would not be issued until after the election. The amendment was voted down by Huggins, Wielechowski and French.
The House Judiciary Committee was present as well and voted unanimously in an advisory capacity in favor of allowing Branchflower to issue the subpoenas. The authorization of the motion is contingent on Senate President Lyda Green's (R) concurrence with the Senate Judiciary Committee.

amongst my group of drinking buddies, i have a standing wager of $1 that sarah won't make it to election, too much baggage.

I hope and pray this doesn't double post.

Perhaps Alaska is small enough (not geographically, Republicans) that they can actually get the investigation done by the beginning of October. But if the Republican machine swoops in the assist Palin and her people, this can go on for years before there's any resolution.
Unless the legislature in Alaska is stronger than our federal legislature, obstruction will be the name of the game.

Isn't Senate Pres. Green an arch nemesis of Palin?
September 12, 2008 5:29 PM | Reply | Permalink
Oh yeah! they hate each other. When Green found out Palin had been tapped for VP she said "Qualified to be President?! She's not even qualified to be governor!". That and Palin was on a talk radio show laughing along while the hosts called Green a "bitch", "a cancer", and made fun of her weight. When they say all politics is local they really mean it up here.

Yes, one gets the feeling Ms Green will "concur" with this move.

I wonder if Sarah Palin was ever a guest at Mrs Nancy Murkowski's famous annual fishing tournament held at the Waterfall Resort in Ketchikan Alaska.
Mrs M sponsored the event on behalf of her "charity", the Waterfall Committee.
The tournament is (or was) attended by Trent Lott, Dennis Hastert, Phil Gramm, etc. etc etc.
The Waterfall Committee is (or was) run by John H. Moseman. Moseman is (or was) the CIA Chief of Staff.
Prior to his appointment to the CIA,, Moseman was Murkowski's chief of staff and legislative director.
I think people tend to forget that Murkowski was chairman of the Senate Energy Committee.
If Sarah Palin attended any of the tournaments, it would tell me that Big Energy backed her long before her run for governor.
If Palin did attend any of the tournaments, I wonder who paid her way?
LOL. Can you spell R-E-D C-A-V-A-N-E-Y?
I think I'll do another post about the Waterfall Committee soon.

keep in mind that Lyda Green is also a member of the Legislative Council and participated in their unanimous vote (see item 4) back in July which launched this investigation to begin with and appointed Hollis French the manage it.

CNN is erroneously reporting that the vote was on party lines. That is incorrect. The Republican, Charlie Huggins, also voted in favor. Here's what he said:
"I see all this duck-foot action under the water," Sen. Charlie Huggins (R) said. "And I'm here, on a break from my moose-huntin' trip, to say let's just get the facts on the table."
Now THAT is a real Alaskan!

i dont feel sorry for mccain or the GOP, i'm starting to feel a little, just a little sorry for sarah palin.
it may end up, that the GOP instead of crowning this woman VP, may end up doing what the DEMS couldnt do. destroy this womans' life.
What the heck was mccain thinking.

Seriously dude, what the fuck for?!? How about a moment's thought about the people who's lives she has adversely affected through her actions?
Me, I tend not to feel sorry for agressively ignorant people.

The truly amusing (and I mean very, very funny) aspect to all this is that the Republican President of the Senate, Lyda Green, is the very same woman who Palin mocked earlier this year on a radio show with Bob Lester. What kind of person thinks it's funny when someone calls a cancer survivor "a cancer," and a "bitch?" Since then, she and Palin have been widely known to be mortal enemies. Here's an article describing the radio appearance: http://www.alternet.org/blogs/peek/97081/palin_laughs_as_opponent_is_called_%22bitch,%22_%22cancer,%22_mocked_for_her_weight/
It's ugly stuff, but I guess karma has a way of taking care of these sorts of things. Of course, there may be a chance that Green may decide that she prefers to get Palin out of the state of Alaska, and therefore not approve the subpoenas.

Sarah Palin is coated with Teflon, so unless Branchflower uncovers a smoking gun it won't affect the campaign. The Chair of the Committee Hollis French and the investigator Stephen Branchflower are both lawyers, it balances out all those lawyers the RNC is throwing at this one.

Wake up and smell the horse manure. Palin is under investigation for abuse of power! But then again, why should I be surprised? We're talking about a Republican party which will resort to threats, lies, and abuse of power in order to mislead the American people. Recall the CIA leak case. The Republican administration didn't like what Ambassador Wilson have to say because it did not blend in with Cheney's war plans, so he was punished by leaking his wife's job. And now, we have a governor who did not like the fact that someone did not do her bidding to fire her ex-brother-in-law, so she fires him! What's next? Detaining foreign nationals? Threatening them with torture? All for "national security?" Way to go Republicans! It's no wonder Europeans seem to confuse the USA with fascism...or are they really confused? It's time to take back our country! It's time to come out of the liberal closet. Away with Republican leaders!

a brief departure from troopergate...why aren't we hearing more about Todd's many year membership in the AIP (Alaska Independence Party). As I understand it, this group wants Alaska to recind it's statehood and, effectually, secede from the Union. What is patriotic about this?? Despite Sarah's in-your-face flashy flag pin, I question her right to wear it if she supported her husband's membership in this organization. Where's the outrage?

According to a new AP/GfK (Roper) poll, Palin continues to contribute significantly to McCain's (still slight!) lead over Obama. The lead is sustained mostly among the White, rural, older demographics. And most say that Obama's lack of experience is more important than Palin's.
So what can we conclude? That a healthy chunk of the voters think an ethics investigation is a sign of experience? This proves she is a good politicians -- because she can face down any attempt to make her accountable for her abuses of office? (THAT certainly IS a useful job skill in any Bush-esque administration!)
To these supporters' minds, experience is measured in years only and not in the quality of the decisions made in those years. Forget that the Bush admin seems to adopt all of Obama's calls on handling foreign policy, after (of course) they deride him as naive for suggesting them. Nevermind that McCain's campaign seems fueled more by lies and distraction than actual evidence that he has significant plans for the future direction of the country that would actually change where Bush has taken us. Forget that the selection of Palin (who may possibly become President) IS a sign of McCain's decision making process.
IF (!) Obama loses this thing, he will take the heat for the failure. But really, the American people will be the ones who failed. Faced with overwhelming evidence of the more-of-the-(Mc)Sameness that got us to this sad state of national affairs, they will have still chosen the grumpy old bozo and his pretty skirt.

And you know why Failin' Palin isn't being subpoenaed in this investigation?
Because it would be "disrespectful". People who who have been nominated for VP deserve not to be investigated for their own malfeasance, because it would be "disrespectful".
Welcome to the new Authoritarianism.

While it is legal for Ms. Green to sign and issue subpoenas it is not legal to subpoena individuals to testify behind closed doors with an investigator.
Sec. 24.25.010. Issuance and form of subpoena.
(a) A subpoena requiring the attendance of a witness before either house of the legislature may be issued by the president or the speaker.
(b) A subpoena requiring the attendance of a witness before a standing or special committee of the legislature may be issued by the chairman of a committee when authorized to do so by a majority of the membership of the committee and with the concurrence of the president or the speaker, or with the concurrence of the house or the senate.
(c) A subpoena requiring the attendance of a witness before an interim committee established by either house of the legislature, or by both, may be issued by the chairman of a committee when authorized to do so by a majority of the membership of the committee and with the concurrence of the president or the speaker.
The judicial council made a huge blunder of law and they are now paying for it. Both Republicans and Democrats screwed this up and we Alaskan's suffer.
What I have feared is coming true. A report will be released by a certain date, regardless of details, and Alaskans will not have the truth.
This process is broken right now and continuing forward, regardless of the outcome, has too many questions involved to consider it valid.
Senator French could have fixed this today but he decide to keep up the partisan split instead of doing what is right for Alaskans and Americans as a whole to learn the facts and truth.
