Conyers Calls for Special Counsel in Continued Investigation of U.S. Attorney Firings
John Conyers (D-MI), chair of the House Judiciary Committee, released a statement today calling for the appointment of a special prosecutor from outside the Justice Department, to continue to investigate the U.S. attorney firings.
"We assume that Attorney General Mukasey will heed the report's call for further investigation, including determining whether criminal offenses were committed, and urge him to appoint a special counsel from outside the Justice Department to work with the Inspector General so the investigation will have the credibility and independence that it needs," Conyers said in a statement this morning.
In addition, because of Congress' impending adjournment, Conyers called an HJC hearing for this coming Friday to discuss the issues raised in the recently released IG report.

conyers is complicit in nothing.
conyers is more concerned about justice being served than you are. exercising an extreme power that has been so little used as to make its use questionable would only serve to make the use of the power overshadow the underlying 'reason' for using the power in the first place.
while i am as concerned as anyone about the ever-diminishing power of the legislative branch, we must all keep in mind that in many ways the power of oversight has and continues to be effective in so far as the cabal's ultimate objectives have largely been a wash. yes, they were able to get rid of the USAs they wanted to get rid of and some of the corruption investigations may have been hampered, but the strategy was all (or mostly) about using the DOJ to seriously fuck with the electoral process. without anyone going to jail (yet) the hearings have put way too much light on the issue for any USAs to aggressively pursue bogus voter fraud cases.
conyers is concerned with justice being served not with being the one to do the serving. having a right to jail people isn't the same as an obligation. by not exercising the right he is not ceding the right, he is reserving the right.
