Former Palin Backer: State Ag Director Job Was "Payoff" To Supporter
In a lengthy investigation into Sarah Palin's hiring practices as mayor of Wasilla and governor of Alaska published yesterday, the New York Times reported in its lede:
[W]hen there was a vacancy at the top of the State Division of Agriculture, [Palin] appointed a high school classmate, Franci Havemeister, to the $95,000-a-year directorship. A former real estate agent, Ms. Havemeister cited her childhood love of cows as a qualification for running the roughly $2 million agency.
It's not just the Times that doesn't appear to think much of Havemeister's fitness for the job. Nick Carney, who ran the Division of Agriculture under Republican governor Jay Hammond -- and who later went on to help launch Palin's political career -- told TPMmuckraker that Palin's appointment of Havemeister was a "payoff" to a political supporter, that was "characteristic of how Sarah operates."
Carney described Havemeister, who he knows personally (Carney's daughter was a high-school classmate of Palin's and Havemeister's) as "a very nice gal," but added: "I don't believe that she really does have those kinds of skills," needed to run the agency.
It was Carney who first convinced Palin to run for city council in 1992 -- a fact confirmed by another source who was active in Wasilla politics during the period. A council member himself at the time, Carney told TPMmuckraker that he believed the council needed someone who represented non-business interests, which then dominated the council. But once Palin became mayor in 1996, the two fell out over a number of issues, including Carney's successful opposition to an effort by Palin to appoint to the city council two conservative supporters -- both of whom opposed recent council decisions to institute a sales tax and to start a police force.
Carney also shed some light on Palin's hiring of a city manager, John Cramer, to help her run Wasilla, a few months into her mayoralty. Though the hiring -- which Carney described as a first for the city -- added $50,000 to Wasilla's budget, Palin has defended the move in the past as necessary for the fast-growing exurb of Anchorage. Carney backed up that claim, but added that Palin's own shortcomings as an executive were also a factor in the council's support for the decision: Palin, he told TPMmuckraker, "had absolutely no management skills and couldn't manage the city on her own."

Palin is an absolute embarrassment. Truly atrocious. If she didn't have a vagina she would be NOWHERE.

I beg to differ. She'd be at home with her kids. Or maybe moose hunting with her kids. Not nowhere. Just in Wasilla.
And I pray she returns there.

TPMm, you mangled the headline and buried the lede!!! You got an absolutely phenomenal quote and you should be screaming it from the rooftops!!
It clearly should be:

Second Time As Farce: How Palin is Exactly Like Bush, Part 2
From Palin's interview with Charlie Gibson:
Palin: "Our national leaders are sending them on a task that is from God"
Gibson: Are we fighting a holy war?
Palin: (looking strained, desperate, trapped): The reference there is from Abraham Lincoln who said "Never presume to know God's will..."
Robert Zimmerman: She failed to describe how a McCain/Palin foreign policy would differ from a Bush foreign policy...
Gibson: Have you ever met a foreign head of state?
Palin: I have not, and I think that if you go back in history, and ask that question of many Vice Presidents they have the same answer that I just gave you.
Anderson Cooper: Bay, ABC News just did a fact check. They looked back the last 30 years, all Vice Presidents have met a foreign leader. Does that matter?
Bay Buchanan: No, it doesn't at all. Her answer was excellent. It will make Americans feel that much closer to her. She's very real. Sure, she hasn't traveled overseas to meet these foreign leaders. But that's not what American's are looking for. She's absolutely correct. They want somebody that they can relate to. Who's hearing them. They're sick and tired of those people in Washington who may know lots of facts and figures and meet lots of people...
Zimmerman: It's always a danger when we have leaders who know facts and figures, Bay. That really does get in the way of setting up sound policies...My concern, Bay, is that when Sarah Palin says that she's not met foreign leaders like that's a good thing--We made that mistake eight years ago when George W. Bush was that likeable guy that you wanted to invite over for a barbeque.

I concur. Shit like that works in nowhere, but when she starts appointing a guy who owns the local Mailboxes ETC as Chief Economist on a national stage, she ain't gonna last long. As corrupt as Republicans may be, I have to hope they can call her out onto the carpet to answer for this.
Either way this crap falls it is going to be entertaining. She loses and goes back to AK and heads start rolling for the non-support as VP candidate. She wins, we are screwed and have to watch this B*** self destruct in front of the world.
I hope America says "thanks but no thanks" to her.

I once waved at the Queen of England while standing on a street in Paris. So I "met" a foreign head of state, and I've been outside of N. America. Definitely, I'm qualified to be VP! Now if I'd only gone to high school with the local mayor.

From the Elephant's mouth...
For Palin to alienate a fellow Republican this severely shows she stepped on a lot of fingers as she clawed her way up the ladder.

Dear TheraP,
I love your comment (as usual) but I have to disagree this time that she would be home with her kids if, as slick wrote, "she didn't have a vagina"! Oh wait, silly me, no doubt we're talking multiple virgin births here.

Ms. Palin seems like an energetic, well-intentioned person but I doubt that she is Vice Presidential material. There are more people in L.A. County than in Alaska for goodness sake. She's little more than young, pretty, female fluff--offsetting the elderly presidential candidate. Her main qualification as I see it is that she's an American citizen.

They're still building the road up to where the bridge would have been rather than give the money back to the federal taxpayers.

It's all razzle dazzle, folks. Watch my lovely assistant while we divert attention from the disaster area formerly known as America. Watch her perky momness while we supress voters in crucial states. Watch the mesmorizing moose mom while we forget that McCain is unlikely to survive a first term. Oh wait__ don't think about that__ I mean he was a POW for gosh sakes.

I know it is a "cute " statement to say she was for it before she was against it, but where is there ever been any statements shown that she did not support the bridge? Everything including her statement she made when killing the bridge show support for it. Just because she had to kill it doesn't mean she didn't support it.
Saying she was for it before she was against it gives her the out to say she was against it.

Don Siegelman was sent to prison for just such a crime, although the charges were later found to have been invented by Karl Rove and prosecuted falsely by corrupt Republicans. I assume Sarah Palin will now go on trial for this crime?
Oh, never mind. IOKIYAR.

Democrats Beware!
While it feels great to point out how absurd a choice Palin is and how the Republicans have made a terrible decision, this is exactly what they want you to do.
They chose Palin to energize their base, the ones that don't think about complex issues affecting the country, but instead make their decision based on perceived similarities.
Think back to when she was first brought into the public sphere. All the right-wing talking pointers kept saying how female Democrats that supported Clinton were switching en masse because of Palin ~even though the numbers weren't there to support it.~ They even explicitly say that the more people attack her, the more attention and sympathy (they hope) she will get.
Forget Palin and everyone who cares about her. If you really want to win the election, do everything you can to get the message 'four more years of Bush' across. Tax policies, lobbyists in the campaign, there's just so much content there that you can use to hammer McCain, that Palin shouldn't get any attention.
That's about all she brings to the campaign anyway.

Her management skills haven't improved in the governor's office. Here are a couple of excerpts from a chat the Washington Post hosted with an Anchorage Daily News reporter the day McCain announced his choice of Palin:
So Palin as governor is skimming along on the surface, buffing her image by claiming a couple of high-profile but debatable accomplishments (like the natural-gas pipeline, which may or may not actually get built), while devoting as much energy to rewarding cronies and punishing opponents as to actually governing.
Which suggests that Palin the VP candidate, who fields a Charlie Gibson question about Israel and Iran by repeating the same rote answer three times, is a case of what-you-see-is-what-you-get. Don't expect a learning curve with her -- just because she's never thought about foreign policy before, that doesn't mean she'll go any deeper than it takes to get a passing grade in the VP debate.
The chat is at http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/discussion/2008/08/29/DI2008082902052.html

Amazing to hear how sexist libs are....all this talk about Palin's vagina and no mention of Obama's nor Biden's testicles. I'm sure the guys feel left out.
This MCSAME, MCBUSH talk has only lost Obama votes. Same old, same old NOTHING talk!
One serious trip overseas (without Obama's rock concert fans) and guess what? Then Palin has met a head of state, on a serious level, not trumping up campaign publicity and photo ops like Obama did. As VP, she will get plenty of briefings, as any VP would, so stop straining over her past life in Alaska. I don't remember Al Gore going through so much questioning and he lived his life in only Tennessee, sexism again.
Palin is good at promoting ideas and works well with others, knows how to delegate. She's not perfect, but then neither is viscious attack-dog Biden, now there's diplomacy, NOT! My relatives in Delaware are SICK of Joe Biden. THEY want CHANGE. Biden dropped out of the presidential race in January when he got only 1% of the Iowa vote. Really pathetic!
