It's Sunny All Year Round at the Governor's Mansion in Alaska

On the campaign trail, Sarah Palin likes to brag about how she put the Alaska state jet on eBay and fired the governor's personal chef. One item that doesn't appear in her stump speech, however, is the personal tanning bed Palin had installed in the governor's mansion.

This morning NarcoNews reported that that a tanning bed had been installed in the governor's official residence in 2007, sourcing a Department of Transportation employee familiar with renovations at the mansion. This evening, Politico's Ben Smith reported that Palin had paid for the tanning bed with her own money.

Now, Palin's own gubernatorial spokesman Bill McCallister has confirmed to TPMmuckraker that a tanning bed had been installed in the governor's official residence in 2007, and that it wasn't paid for with state funds.

"She paid for it herself," McCallister told TPMmuckraker. "It was surplus from a local athletic club."

The news of Palin's luxurious purchase -- beds can cost as much as $35,000 -- presents a sharp contrast to the blue-collar persona she projects on the campaign trail.

Second Time As Farce: How Palin is Exactly Like Bush, Part 2

From Palin's interview with Charlie Gibson:

Palin: "Our national leaders are sending them on a task that is from God"

Gibson: Are we fighting a holy war?

Palin: (looking strained, desperate, trapped): The reference there is from Abraham Lincoln who said "Never presume to know God's will..."

Robert Zimmerman: She failed to describe how a McCain/Palin foreign policy would differ from a Bush foreign policy...

Gibson: Have you ever met a foreign head of state?

Palin: I have not, and I think that if you go back in history, and ask that question of many Vice Presidents they have the same answer that I just gave you.

Anderson Cooper: Bay, ABC News just did a fact check. They looked back the last 30 years, all Vice Presidents have met a foreign leader. Does that matter?

Bay Buchanan: No, it doesn't at all. Her answer was excellent. It will make Americans feel that much closer to her. She's very real. Sure, she hasn't traveled overseas to meet these foreign leaders. But that's not what American's are looking for. She's absolutely correct. They want somebody that they can relate to. Who's hearing them. They're sick and tired of those people in Washington who may know lots of facts and figures and meet lots of people...

Zimmerman: It's always a danger when we have leaders who know facts and figures, Bay. That really does get in the way of setting up sound policies...My concern, Bay, is that when Sarah Palin says that she's not met foreign leaders like that's a good thing--We made that mistake eight years ago when George W. Bush was that likable guy that you wanted to invite over for a barbeque.

Is there a reason you only ever post complete articles from that site?

user-pic

Well, I suppose that's alright then. About paying for the tanning bed out of personal funds, I mean.

But, why bother? Her financial submissions seem to indicate the she is off in Wasilla more often than not, earning that all-important per diem entitlement. Hey: maybe some of that bogus per diem money she pockets actually allowed her to pick up this all important aging-beauty queen accessory when she could otherwise not have afforded it…

user-pic

Yeah, this one goes in the "big whoop" bin for me.

user-pic

Perhaps she paid for the tanning bed herself, but did she pay fair market value, or did she get a "special" discount?

Also, did the state pay to upgrade the electrical system in the mansion to accommodate the energy requirements for such a bed?

Certainly the State is paying the energy bills on the governor's mansion.

PEACE

user-pic

I'm sure she got a good deal and the state paid the power, but is it enough to get distracted from very real problems? This just reeks of red herring material on the level of saying that Cheney's socks don't match.

Hi Michael :)

I too see the tanning bed as a "petty issue" as per politics. However, I think also that this "issue" is very telling of Mrs. Palin and her claims of "common folk".
Common folk do not have the funds to purchase huge "vanity" products, they are busy trying to just hold on to their homes. Her ability to purchase such a product speaks to her "down home" persona the GOP is trying so hard to cultivate with the public. So, while it might not be "important" in a political sense, it does say alot about Mrs. Palin as an individual, which like it or not is a factor of judgment in the way people vote.
I find her to be lacking in sincerity, and goodness. She is woefully unprepared for this position at this time in our history. We need sharp, truly concerned leaders, with the DESIRE to make things better. What I see in Mrs. Palin is that same greedy gleam that can be seen in the eyes of Mr. Bush, Mr. Cheney, et. all. They remind me of Lestat in "Interview with the Vampire", always wanting more and more. The Bush/Cheney Administration has been the vampire to the citizen's jugular, bleeding US dry.
We need leaders that have a natural curiosity of the "outside" world. A VP that only just received her passport, and who's only trip outside The States was political in nature is not someone we can afford at the helm of foreign policy at a time when globalization is a reality.

Her political expertise, are as *fake* as her tan.

What do you think?

~gracey lou

She didn't pay for it "out of her own money" -- she paid for it out of the $17,000 worth of per diem payments she took for living in her own house! (where I presume a tanning bed is already in place).

Why would you expect anything less than a FAKE tan from Palin?

I mean, there isn't anything about her that's authentic - in spite of the "she's a regular person" narrative that gets invoked every time she steps in it when deviating from (or, in some cases, sticking to) the script.

user-pic

I guess to her credit, it's not a case of spray-tan.

Are you people f'ing insane?

A) Do you know how cold Alaska is? B) You do realize that there are parts of that state that go 3-4 months out of the year with NO SUNLIGHT?!?! C) You do realize that by hitting her on this you're insulting (somehow) anyone who dares to use a tanning bed? (A lot more "hicks" than you realize) D) Bitching about this with a whiff of "wrongness" is completely undone by the fact that she paid for it herself -- thus (once again) subverting your own argument about her as a earmarker/spender/waster/whatever...

Yeah, a stupid thing to complain about.

Everyone knows how important tanning is to a HOCKEY MOM!

Who gives a damn about a tanning bed in the governor's mansion? Why is anyone paying anymore attention to this happy horses**t?
Any chance of a story on the complete and utter lack of detail on how the McCain campaign hopes to deal with anything that will face them should they ooze into office in November?

I am willing to bet that if this gets any mainstream play, she will say it is for her seasonal affective disorder.

There's nothing to be gained politically by making fun of tanning beds. I personally think the artificially tanned aesthetic is tacky and redneck, but tanning beds are very popular among lots of people in the working class, at least in the south.

Who's the elitist now, baby?

user-pic

It's all important, because it's all connected and pushes back against the common narrative that this Wasilla 'hockey mom' is just like women everywhere. HINT: women everywhere cannot afford their own personal, discounted, refurbished tanning bed. Just can't.

On a more humorous note, how about if she lets her pasty white running mate take 20 minute naps in the tanning bed?

Oh, wait: something about that mistaken, left-wing belief about a tenuous connection between exposure to such frequencies of light and skin cancer… Maybe she is planning to 'bake' her way in to the oval office. Hmm.

Maybe McShame can give her a lecture on the dangers of melanoma.

user-pic

Al Giordano also confirmed that state funds were used to bolster the electrical system in order to facilitate the Palen Tanning Bed.

Thus, taxpayer money was used to install a tanning bed in the Gov. mansion.

Nobody's saying this needs to take over all the other Palen scandals, but it's another important story to illustrate the character and hypocrisy of this person who is trying to be one heartbeat from being the Presidency.

Plus, was Palen using the bed while she was allegedly pregnant? If so, that shows very bad judgment.

I guess if I lived in a land where the sun shone for only 6 months of the year, I might have a sun bed too.

Is any of this in the least relevant? If it is meant as a sneer-job, the most likely one to be ridiculed is the author of the piece and the publisher who thought it was fit to print. My question to both is: what are you doing?

People in glass tanning beds shouldn't throw stones about elitism and $400 haircuts.

So that's it. I was wondering why McCain is from Arizona and is white as a sheet and Palin is from frozen Alaska and is brown as a berry. Usually in Alaska tanning is for hides.

That's Just What I Said

user-pic

Good grief. Lord knows I'm not voting Republican this year and I'm appalled at the thought of "President Sara Palin". But everyone has their little luxuries and hobbies - fishing boats, stock cars, skydiving, etc.

As long as the public isn't paying for her tanning bed, there are far more serious issues to focus on.

Beauty queen installs all her popular high school friends into cushy, upper level government positions they aren't qualified for, puts a tanning bed in the governor's mansion, torments all those nerdy museum curators and librarians as mayor, lies compulsively...

Isn't Sarah Palin the girl everyone hated in High School?

And I'd personally love to know the brand name of the tanning bed she bought. How great would "Elite TanSpa" be?

Or rather, has she gotten past High School yet?

Top 3 bumper sticker thoughts on this "development":

- Palin, won't even use solar energy to get a tan.

- Palin, just like ordinary Alaskans, only tanner.

- You can't expect the Mrs. First Dude to be pastey!

user-pic

Brown and Serve?

Forget Bush. Hell, she's starting to remind me more and more of Elvis Presley. Not the cool Elvis Presley, but the delusional one that hired all his cousins and friends, fired people at will he "imagined" were against him, spent money he didn't have, was tackier than a gift shop in Panama City. And..wanted to help the president put away bad guys.

You know, Richard Nixon just give him a pretend FBI badge. Maybe we can just give her a pretend vice-presidency and she'll go away.

If she paid for it with her own money, I don't see the problem.

i think the point is that it's not very "folksy" and it's certainly less "relate"-able than saying arugula is elitist. i have plenty of relatives who eat arugula, but none of them have tanning beds in their home.

Fourth bumper sticker thought add-on:

- Brings new meaning to "Heck of a job Brownie"

user-pic

This isn't worth the ink, even cyber-ink.

This is in the same basket as John Edwards' $400 haircut. If you hold yourself out as one thing, "son of millworker, fighter for the little guy"; "hockey mom"; whatever, then contrary conduct-no matter how personal- when you think no one is looking is fair game. It exposes phonies.

How many good 'ol boys get $400 haircuts? How many of those hockey moms up there buy commerical grade tanning machines for themselves? If you promote a narrative for yourself as one thing, and act another way, isn't that relevant in a Post-Bush world? These non verbal statements speak volumes.

user-pic

Sunny, yesterday my life was filled with rain.
Sunny, you smiled at me and really really eased the pain.
Oh, the dark days are done, and the bright days are here,
My Sunny one shines so sincere,
Oh, Sunny one so true, I love you.
Sunny, thank you for the truth you've let me see.
Sunny, thank you for the facts from A to Z.
You're my spark of nature's fire,
You're my sweet complete desire.
Sunny one so true, I love you.

I want her outa my head and back in her bed sippin' sarsaparilla in Warsilla.

Not sure if the tanning bed really matters, but it has all the makings of another great SNL sketch.

interesting parallel:
McCain suffers from recurrent Melanoma, Palin engages in a high risk activity which is causally leaked to skin cancer.

Serious Side note: it's sort of crazy that McCain hasn't released his medical records given his cancer history.

My poor father died 10 months ago of cancer. 16 months ago my dad was a perfectly healthy, active 67 year old. The transformation was a unbelievable as it was scary. The country really should know if something like that is lurking just beneath his medical records.

Sympathies to you for your loss.

McCain released his medical records a few months ago -- well, actually he released only a portion of them, and it was only for an hour in a hotel room to a pre-selected group of reporters who weren't allowed to make copies of anything.

Since she was picked for the VP slot, Scary Palin has stopped tanning. She has done so in order to have all her lies appear to be white ones.

YUP! YUP!

With so much good information, why jump on this? If I was on the other side, I'd beat you over the head with this to show how frivolouos your attacks were, and how you really don't have anything.

Unforced error.

My friends in law enforcement tell me tanning beds are common in houses with meth labs.

Funny, my friends in the Pacific Northeast tell me that tanning beds are pretty common where the sun doesn't shine from October to May.

Thank you, it is funny.

In the meantime, I hope your friends will direct your attention to U.S. municipalities with the highest concentrations of meth traffic.

Palin's was one of them.

eze:
really? you'd beat us over the head with a tanning bed?

first of all, we're hardly running on Palin's tanning bed. Mark my words, today is the day McCain's campaign lost it's Palin bounce. It ain't the tanning bed, it's the economy. This is the day the 10 million independent voters who will determine this election see the merging of macroeconomic policy and microeconomic reality and realize that America has suffered tremendously these last 8 years and don't need someone who blindly states that the economy is "fundamentally strong" in the face of the obvious. McCain surrounds himself with economic idiots btw. First Phil Graham's accusation that we are a country of whiners suffering from a "mental recession" -- then Don Luskin, another McCain adviser writes this editorial http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/09/12/AR2008091202415.html?hpid=opinionsbox1 yesterday. I'd be laughing if my 401k and personal portfolio hadn;t taken a 20k hit today.

All the more reason not to focus on something stupid like a tanning bed. Because the Repug talking heads can then get on TV and say how "the Dems have nothing, their desperate. They tried to paint Sarah Palin as someone who lives off the public, who abuses authority, but they couldn't find it. So now they attacking a used luxary item she bought with her own money and implying that she had the taxpayers pay for it," all of which would be a fair reading this article: You think it's going to be about how she had the taxpayers buy a tanning bed, but then you realize it isn't. And this is exactly the kind of crap they point out ("She didn't ban books! Stay away from Bristol! Etc."). This is a distraction, which is what the Repugs want. Why give it to them?

eze, i think PalinClock's post pretty much gives you your answer.

I am convinced by the rational, but many others vote from the gut. The tanning bed, though admittedly a minor issue that I'd be surprised to see "picked up" in any significant fashion, goes to the heart of the Palin narrative that she is "authentic" and just like every other hard working multi tasking hockey mom.

On the other hand, it also stirs up a certain amount of concern that she just isn't quite up to the task of being VP -- Will she be bringing her tanning be to D.C.?

You guys are so cute. I *love* my fellow rational, left-brained Democrats.

However.

You're confusing shouldn't matter with doesn't matter.

If this election were being decided on issues, it would already be over. Obama/Biden would be up by 20 points.

A large segment of the electorate doesn't vote the issues, they vote their gut - - and that's what Sarah Palin is appealing to. The entire package is "I'm just plain folks - just like you! Not at all like that elitist uppity Hollywood Democrat (I can even hear the sneering as I type the words...)

Of course it's not about the tanning machine, any more than it was about the windsurfing (Kerry) or the expensive haircut (Edwards) - - it's about the metaphor:

Her tan is a fake - just like she is.

The pitbull line is an act - she runs from questions so fast you can see the skid marks, and has surrogates protect her from the mean awful reporters because, after all, she's just a girl.

She's not about saving the taxpayers' money - she's about sticking it to the lower 48 (gas prices, federal pork) and using it to reward cronies and buy herself perks (even if the bed wasn't an illegal gift - and I bet it was - taxpayers still footed the bill for the wiring job.)

And don't even get me started on her "family values"...

I agree that the Obama/Biden campaign shouldn't touch this story with a 10 foot pole, but the media should run with it (particularly since they did the same with Kerry and Edwards.)

-PalinClock.com

ps - I made a half dozen posts here this weekend, and every single one of them got eaten. Here's hoping this one goes through... :0

Yep, if expensive haircuts (Edwards) and Botox (Kerry) are worthy of media mockery, tanning beds should fit the bill nicely as well.

user-pic

This actually brings up an interesting point about sexism. Would anyone in the media dare talk about Palin's (or Hillary's) haircut or botox? Or would that get them immediately the ZOMG SEXIST! smackdown?

To swipe from Camper Van Beethoven:

"Where, where the hell is Phil Gramm?..."

That ass makes Rove look down-right saintly to me by comparison.

Well, how about that. They're both at high risk for melanoma. What kind of an idiot still uses a tanning bed? Maybe a vote for McCain/Palin is actually a vote for Nancy Pelosi as president.

user-pic

Well, imelda marcos had a section of the mansion in manila refrigerated so she could wear furs and entertain her fur wearing friends.
Of course outside it was 100 and no one had money for shoes or food.
Slightly out of touch but supported by early bushcon money.
The tanned look for a gov in ak may be equally as important.
You never know what one has for a priority list.Hunting moose while tan may be in now days.
Ok tanning aside: how quickly does she memorize the script and become the explosive bushcon flag waver and really make a mess of things.
Her distraction potential in huge.Watch out.

her distraction potential has been exhausted. In the era (error) of the 15 minute news cycle, the 15 minutes of media hysteria over Palin has passed -- and so has the subsequent Palin 15 minute love fest. Now we are on to: Since Rove has given us the green light by saying that McCain has gone too far, wouldn't be interesting if we started reporting on how McCain's campaign strategy is "Lying works and we never get called on it."

There is a groundswell happening as well. America's macro economy is in dire straits. Who do I trust to fix it: republicans who got us here or Democrats who gave us the Clinton years.

McCain campaign should be losing by 20 points, i view them as defying gravity. They KNOW they are too. That's why they shield Palin from the press (why allow reality to burst the Palin bubble?) and try to come up with a daily distraction to avoid addressing "the fundamentals."

Rumor has it that in 2005 Sarah Palin was two days late returning a Block Buster video. You should investigate that too!!

Everybody in Wasilla knows Palin was a habitual non-rewinder.

Well that's one of Palin's beds McCain won't try to climb into.

My, my what a judgemental lot. Who cares if the lady has a tan bed? Alaskan Winters get very long and a tan bed is a great place to just grab a few moments of peace and quiet.....so who cares??? You can get them for a fraction of cost at a lot of places. I'd rather have a strong female politician who enjoys a tan bed than a self-serving male who admittedly snorted cocaine and recently put American soldiers in Iraq at risk so he could achieve a political advantage...you know, delay the withdrawal till he is in office and take credit. Rhetoric is no equivalent to product. What has he actually accomplished? What promises has he actually kept? Obama is an empty self-serving shell. Palin went after the oil companies and corrupt politicians in her own party.... what's so bad about that? Alaskans love her. I am an ex-Democrat who studied, learned and rejected decades of lies and abuse of poor and minorities by the Democrats. Promises never fulfilled and often repeated.

"I'd rather have a strong female politician who enjoys a tan bed than a self-serving male who admittedly snorted cocaine and recently put American soldiers in Iraq at risk so he could achieve a political advantage"

you realize your "description" of Obama describes George W Bush far more accurately than it could ever describe Obama. Or did you forget? ...forgive me if i laugh. that kind of irony always gets me.

you also write: "Rhetoric is no equivalent to product."

Pardon me, but if we have a receipt, can America go ahead and return the crappy Republican "product" we've been sold for the last 8 years? It's defective, and most of us have no idea why we bought it in the first place --- oh yeah, it was the stupid infomercials.

Wow, you liberal nutcases are a bunch of whackos. "She owns a tanning bed...OMG!! Seek and destroy baby, seek and destroy, we got her now!!" Do us all a favor, go find your calling by joining the peace corp, hugging a tree, becoming a community organizer or an overpaid entertainer. Let the responsible, grown up folks run the country.

When will you fight them over there so we don't have to listen to your tripe over here?

"Ex Dem"

Please.

If Palin wants to be evaluated on her merits, I for one will be happy to do it. All she needs to do is start acting like a serious candidate for the office.

Step #1: hold a press conference, just like EVERY OTHER CANDIDATE has. Not lifestyle interviews with Charlie Gibson. A press conference. Just like a real, grown-up candidate.

And no more of this "waiting until she's treated with deference" nonsense. She's not running for Queen.

It's time to put up, or shut up. We're less than 50 days from potentially giving this woman the keys to the U.S. nuclear arsenal. Refusing to answer our questions openly is an insult to the American people and the very notion of an informed democracy.

-PalinClock.com

I find it completely wrong that this white woman of the Arctic North can put a thing in her official residence that changes the color Allah intended her to be. It is complete unfair that such a thing cannot be used by Barrack Hussein, so I feel that we must all do our best to bring this thing to the public attention. So what that she bought it with her own money, that is not the question. I am sure she bares her body to do so, defiling herself. My hope Barack would never defile himself by baring himself in a misguided attempt to change the color that Allah gave him. If he need such a thing I am sure Mr. Rezko would pay for it, but of course he has no need of it.

good work troll. You win the blue ribbon in this thread for least funny "trying to be funny" post.

honorable mention in the "barely coherent" open division.

What is this dontwn atty? Is that a position of responsibility? If it is, I aspire to be an atty too. What is this troll thing you speak of? I am a serious person supporting the hope of all in this satanic country. Surely this article about how the forsaken one, Palin, has bought her own thing to change her color is important. Or others like you, a respected atty, would not read such things.

Hasim demonstrates why the Fox comedy half hour lasted no longer than the Rush TV show. Conservatives who try cannot do comedy. The vitriol gets in the w3ay.

Maybe she can lend the tanning bed to Cindy McCain, whose spray-on tan stops at her ankles.

Oh, good God ... Enough of the HOCKEY MOM! How many hockey moms are there in the U.S.? In the South? Is she running for PM of Canada??

user-pic

"It was surplus from a local athletic club."

So it was a gift?

Hasim....aka, a confused middleclass whiteboy from the suburbs who thinks he's a jihadi terrorist.

What's so amazing about this campaign, the McCain camp - and their press like Fox News - don't want you to know anything about Palin. On McCain's ~ I was a POW back in Nam ~ therefore I should be trusted absolutely. McCain is really playing that grandpa war hero thing to the fullest. But everything he has said about Gov Palin has either been untrue or a half truth. It’s like the bike is broken and they are still peddling like crazy down the road.

Bill O'Reilly is just all over himself - on Palin - kind of looks dopey really - Palin is Bush - oil and more oil - war and a bad economy.

You have the normal press - oh we don’t want to take sides - while Fox News has been all about wrecking Obama’s image - so much so that it became Sean Hannity’s full time job. Which explain why he was rewarded with the Palin interview – for showing loyalty to the party. You really need a media outlet which will oppose Fox News - straight up!

The economy is going to hell in a hand basket - and these guys think they should have another turn.

Overseas Bush turned America into a joke - if Palin is elected - the US might find corporation with other nations hard to come by - if it begins to look like the US has become a renegade nation - those EU nations - everyone finds funny - they are going to protect their interests first. No EU nation is going to go to war with Russia over a frackin gas pipeline through Georgia. Palin is bad news!

user-pic

Q: Why shouldn't Palin's tanning booth dominate a couple of news cycles? We've all heard the reports about Gore's "Mansion", Edwards' "Haircut", Kerry's "Ketchup Baronesse-Wife"...(jeepers, those elitist Democrats!)
But Ms McCain's "Houses"? Palin's "Sunlight Therapy"? Nada. (ummm...are there other prominent women in the GOP? Anyone...anyone...?)

user-pic

This is some desperate partisan flailing for something to hurt the lady with. And it is invasive. Again, it harms credibility for the principled campaign approach that so attracted me to support Obama initially. Now it seems the gloves may be off, but underneath are unclean hands.

Obviously, this is so for both sides. Together, the partisan monopolies are doing their part to create gridlock while our country faces some of its deepest crises.

Shall we call this "artificial intelligence"?

Calm down liberals. Quit throwing a fit, get up off of the floor, dust yourselves off and start acting like adults. Holding your breath until we conservatives turn Blue isn't going to happen. Your Second Coming is coming in second and your a wee bit upset. Understood. But please, this is just a "surplus" tanning bed she bought with her own money. Get over it!

Whoops!
YOU'RE a wee bit upset.

Why doesn’t Palin release her tax returns? Why won’t Palin hold a press conference?

What is she hiding?

Yes, as a struggling mother in a low income family who shops occasionally at Wal-Mart (when I am not spending my money on FOOD, GAS, OIL and ELECTRICITY) I often feel that I can relate to Sarah Palin. Yup.

So? This is it? This is the best you can do? So she had a tanning bed that SHE paid for in the governor's mansion? Why is this news?? Man, talk about desperate....Obama's tan isn't FAKE but EVERYTHING else about him is. Why doesn't the leftist, liberal biased media ever scrutinize him....because there is plenty. All the Sarah Palin bashing is only going to benifit the McCain campain....looks to me like it will be McCain/Palin this November!! Keep going lefties, great job!!

user-pic

Interesting to note that VECO paid for improvements to Steven's home and Moozilla can't show us the reciept and . . .

I am much more concerned that her husband sits in on Executive Meetings. If she and McCain are elected will he be sitting in on Cabinet meetings? He holds no elected office so why is she allowing this?

McCain Invents Fire, The Wheel

From ABC News:

McCain and the BlackBerry

This morning McCain domestic policy adviser Douglas Holz-Eakin was asked what Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., could point to from his work on the Senate Commerce Committee that would prove to the American people that he has experience on technology issues.

"He did this," Holz-Eakin said, holding up his BlackBerry. "Telecommunications in the United States, the premiere innovation in the past 15 years comes right through the Commerce Committee. So you're looking at the miracle that John McCain helped create. And that's what he did."...

Even more remarkably, he did this using only a piece of flint and crude stone tools.

The first message he sent: "Watson. The fundamentals of the economy are strong."

If this tanning bed was surplus from a local health club, was it a gift, or did she receive a steep discount when she "purchased" it? I think there are tax consequences of this that need to be examined along with the other issues (i.e., per diem pay, travel expenses of her family, etc.). I am willing to bet she didn't include this benefit (which may be worth as much as $35,000 according to an earlier commenter) as "income" on her tax filing. If it was a gift, was there a benefit to the health club in exchange? Just asking!

When would the Governor be able to use the tanning bed in her official residence since she's busy collecting her $60.00 per diem for living in her own home?

Yes, I think most of the posters on this site are insane, per their fixation on this and all the other smears about the Palins.

Let's be clearer here as to why this interesting (not important, yet)-- coincidences can abound, but are cleared up with receipts. I do not care if she slowly bakes rotisserie-style. I do care if she pulled a Stevens. To trace this back, she got a tanning bed, her old Wasilla township got a complete health complex that apparently few people actually wanted. Nice coincidence. This is why receipts and paper trails protect public officials and lack thereof make us all think something stinks. It's easy to disprove, and definitely worth it to prevent distraction.

Also, the reason receipts are nice is to prevent the "just bill me" stunt that Stevens is pulling. He says, "bill me," but no bill actually comes, 'cuz the deal is workin'! Especially in that state and its history of currying favor and graft. And especially if you were working for Ted Stevens as director of his 527, but neglected to mention that to anyone when this all started. And also especially if you are also potentially abusing the power of your office for personal vendetta.

If she can't come up with the receipt, surely she can name the health club and their tax records and receipts are supposed to be kept for 3 years, which cover her entire stint as Gov and some of the mayor. So should be there. Maybe some enterprising sleuth can discover the info? Would be interesting if hers matches the models in the Wasilla Sports complex? Or if they have records there? Or if the state-paid electrician has info? Or maintainance contract (costly bulbs and checkups for power and UV protections?); shouldn't be too many of those up there.

Like I had written here before, it's the 5-8k gifts that make the feds suspicious because of no IRS tracking of sales over 10k. A "used" tanning bed would fit right in, I think. Welcome to the life of a public official in the lower 48 states. Tougher to bully 300 million people.
