McCain Press Aide Calls Alaska Reporter At Home To Complain About Unfavorable Coverage
Here's a little more evidence that the McCain-Palin campaign is playing the hardest of hardball on Trooper-Gate -- especially in regard to press relations.
Jason Moore, a reporter with Anchorage-based KTUU-TV, just confirmed to TPMmuckraker that Megan Stapleton, a spokeswoman for the McCain-Palin campaign in Alaska, called his home to complain about one of Moore's news reports, and accused Moore of calling Stapleton and another McCain staffer liars.
Moore's report looked at the McCain-Palin campaign's "Truth Squad," an aggressive Alaska-based public relations campaign that's being led by Stapleton and former federal prosecutor Ed O'Callaghan and is designed to help thwart the Trooper-Gate investigation.
Moore reported that the Truth Squad was not always entirely truthful itself. He noted that Stapleton had said in a Friday press conference that it was Hollis French, the Democrat overseeing the investigation, who had pulled one name, that of former Palin chief of staff Mike Tibbles, off the list of witnesses to receive subpoenas. Stapleton had pointed to this as an inappropriate political maneuver by French.
But in fact, Moore reported, it was GOP Rep. Jay Ramras, a McCain supporter, who took Tibbles' name off the list. Moore quoted Ramras saying so.
Stapleton and O'Callaghan have another "Truth Squad" press conference scheduled for 7pm EST tonight.
Moore told TPMmuckraker that he and Stapleton -- who was a press aide to Palin before eventually moving over to the McCain campaign -- used to work together as co-anchors on KTUU. "We're friends," he said.
When Stapleton called his home, said Moore, she reached Moore's wife, and immediately told her: "Your husband just called two Hoyas liars." Stapleton, O'Callaghan, and Moore's wife all attended Georgetown University, whose mascot is the Hoyas.
Moore added that Stapleton had also called the news director of KTUU to complain.
Asked whether he and Stapleton really remained friends, Moore allowed: "It hasn't been too friendly this week."

Combine this with "Stop Blogging Right Now!" and you have a pattern of directly, personally lobbying journalists for better coverage I don't think I've ever heard of in American politics before.

I'm pretty sure Palin's ex Chief of Staff Tibbles has something to say.
He abruptly resigned in May 2008 - and went to work for Ted Stevens as his campaign manager.
Prior to his resignation - Tibbles and Palin were close - he headed her transition committee when she came in as governor and then was Chief of Staff.
Prior to Palin, Tibbles worked for ex Governor Murkowski.

They were life long friends (30 years) she and mainly Todd got all hot and bothered about Tibbles having an affair with Todd's best buddies wife. He thought he was just going to change positions, but nope, all of a sudden his blackberry wouldn't work, when he called in to see what was happening, he was told he was canned.
Palin justice baby!

The Republican truth squad just issued a statement:
“I think that all good, right thinking people in this country are sick and tired of being told that all good, right thinking people in this country are fed up with being told that all good, right thinking people in this country are fed up with being sick and tired. I'm certainly not, and I'm sick and tired of being told that I am”

It's a sure bet that Megan Stapleton will…
• soon be unemployed, with no slot for her in the Obama administration, and
• unable to return to KTUU, as she just publicly 'burnt that bridge' with her former news director and at least one colleague.
Nice move! Double up, and bet everything on a McCain Presidency. Psst: Megan - are not you aware of what happens when the team you are a part of implodes, then withers away?
Maybe there's a tiny UFH station in Wasilla looking for a weather reporter…

There is a sense of incredible franticness surrounding the attempts to squelch the Trooper-gate probe. While the alleged actions by Gov Palin are probably actionable in an administrative court, does no one in the McCain campaign realize that they are doing more harm to Palin and the campaign by steam-rolling the locals and trying to bury a legislatively sanctioned investigation?
Per all accounts Alaskans are frontiers(wo)men who take pride in their independence and maverickyness. I would not be surprised if one of the elitist Republican lawyer types from the lower 48 gets a serious ass wuppin some day from one of the locals while trying to control the message.
Or is the mission of this pathetic Alaskan opera to protect the myth of Saint Sarah at all costs? It would be easier to take the hit on the investigation now than to deal with the continuous drip of leaks, which are really doing more harm to her.

Remember, this is the party of those who believe that they create their own reality. Truth, therefore, is simply what these folks project at the moment. Then it changes. That is the definition of bullshit: where you do not care whether what you say is really true or not.

I've met/known Moore and his wife - two people could not have more integrity.
It says volumes about Stapleton that she would invoke their college alumni in an effort to claim entitlement to favorable press.
KTUU has been a pillar of journalistic ethics in the State of Alaska - most of us are shocked and dismayed to see a former reporter (Stapleton) shilling for a carpetbagging campaigner (McCain). It was Bill McAllister that kept the pressure on the Murkowski administration when it came to secret meetings with the oil companies on the natural gas pipeline - now he's shilling for Palin? Did he have bias towards her all along? It changes my perspective on the past 4-5 years and there can't be a bigger argument for moving the capital out of Juneau and onto the mainland. (Warning: colloquial Alaska politics here)

Three rules for understanding political jargon:
Any bill with a derivation of "Fair" in the title, isn't.
Anyone saying they don't want to play the "blame game" is to blame.
Any committee with "Truth" in the title was created for the purpose of suppressing it.

Any flippant defying of reporters to play "stump the candidate" means "I'm a shallow presumptuous ignoramous, and if you press for more information, I'll pull some 'in what respect, Charlie?' dissembling response, because I've bullshitted my way through life in Alaska that way." What, that won't work in the lower 48?

Har har, Jason Moore is the brother-in-law of Trevor McCabe, former staffer for Ted Stevens who is up to his earballs in the CBC corruption investigations in Alaska.
Moore was also the spokesflak for Fran Ulmer, former Lt Governor under Tony Knowles, in her run for Governor in 2002.
Meg Stapleton is Rovian-like reptilian who used to work for the RNC as a speechwriter before she worked for KTUU television.

September 18, 2008 10:00 PM | Reply | Permalink
Don't we have first amendment rights being suppressed here? That's evidence of federal crime, right? How about McCain wading into the Palin-specific state-level ongoing investigations? How is this jurisdictionally sound? Can we at least get an FBI investigation or something, maybe? At least non-state-appointed police representation?
How about open evidence of witness tampering and coercion? 10 folks suddenly not willing to testify? You must be kidding.
And apparently AG impeachment is "off the table" at the state level despite refusing to honor AK state law (legislator's subpoenas)?
This could be why they want their own country... dictatorship!
