McCain Press Aide Calls Alaska Reporter At Home To Complain About Unfavorable Coverage

Here's a little more evidence that the McCain-Palin campaign is playing the hardest of hardball on Trooper-Gate -- especially in regard to press relations.

Jason Moore, a reporter with Anchorage-based KTUU-TV, just confirmed to TPMmuckraker that Megan Stapleton, a spokeswoman for the McCain-Palin campaign in Alaska, called his home to complain about one of Moore's news reports, and accused Moore of calling Stapleton and another McCain staffer liars.

Moore's report looked at the McCain-Palin campaign's "Truth Squad," an aggressive Alaska-based public relations campaign that's being led by Stapleton and former federal prosecutor Ed O'Callaghan and is designed to help thwart the Trooper-Gate investigation.

Moore reported that the Truth Squad was not always entirely truthful itself. He noted that Stapleton had said in a Friday press conference that it was Hollis French, the Democrat overseeing the investigation, who had pulled one name, that of former Palin chief of staff Mike Tibbles, off the list of witnesses to receive subpoenas. Stapleton had pointed to this as an inappropriate political maneuver by French.

But in fact, Moore reported, it was GOP Rep. Jay Ramras, a McCain supporter, who took Tibbles' name off the list. Moore quoted Ramras saying so.

Stapleton and O'Callaghan have another "Truth Squad" press conference scheduled for 7pm EST tonight.

Moore told TPMmuckraker that he and Stapleton -- who was a press aide to Palin before eventually moving over to the McCain campaign -- used to work together as co-anchors on KTUU. "We're friends," he said.

When Stapleton called his home, said Moore, she reached Moore's wife, and immediately told her: "Your husband just called two Hoyas liars." Stapleton, O'Callaghan, and Moore's wife all attended Georgetown University, whose mascot is the Hoyas.

Moore added that Stapleton had also called the news director of KTUU to complain.

Asked whether he and Stapleton really remained friends, Moore allowed: "It hasn't been too friendly this week."

Combine this with "Stop Blogging Right Now!" and you have a pattern of directly, personally lobbying journalists for better coverage I don't think I've ever heard of in American politics before.

I'm shocked -- shocked -- to hear of this practice.

I'm pretty sure Palin's ex Chief of Staff Tibbles has something to say.

He abruptly resigned in May 2008 - and went to work for Ted Stevens as his campaign manager.

Prior to his resignation - Tibbles and Palin were close - he headed her transition committee when she came in as governor and then was Chief of Staff.

Prior to Palin, Tibbles worked for ex Governor Murkowski.

They were life long friends (30 years) she and mainly Todd got all hot and bothered about Tibbles having an affair with Todd's best buddies wife. He thought he was just going to change positions, but nope, all of a sudden his blackberry wouldn't work, when he called in to see what was happening, he was told he was canned.

Palin justice baby!

Jason Moore must be on to something. Keep pushing!

All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent.

Are we sure this isn't a photo of that guy from Monty Python in a wig?

The Republican truth squad just issued a statement:

“I think that all good, right thinking people in this country are sick and tired of being told that all good, right thinking people in this country are fed up with being told that all good, right thinking people in this country are fed up with being sick and tired. I'm certainly not, and I'm sick and tired of being told that I am”

Are you thinking of Eric Idle? Nice.

I mean... Sexist!

It's a sure bet that Megan Stapleton will…

• soon be unemployed, with no slot for her in the Obama administration, and
• unable to return to KTUU, as she just publicly 'burnt that bridge' with her former news director and at least one colleague.

Nice move! Double up, and bet everything on a McCain Presidency. Psst: Megan - are not you aware of what happens when the team you are a part of implodes, then withers away?

Maybe there's a tiny UFH station in Wasilla looking for a weather reporter…

user-pic

Well,

You know the sportscaster position will be filled.

user-pic

good one!

Stapleton will find a job, there's wingnut welfare wherever you go.

Lying? Pressing the press? Stonewalling an investigation into my ethics and possible abuse of power?

In what respect, Charlie?

There is a sense of incredible franticness surrounding the attempts to squelch the Trooper-gate probe. While the alleged actions by Gov Palin are probably actionable in an administrative court, does no one in the McCain campaign realize that they are doing more harm to Palin and the campaign by steam-rolling the locals and trying to bury a legislatively sanctioned investigation?

Per all accounts Alaskans are frontiers(wo)men who take pride in their independence and maverickyness. I would not be surprised if one of the elitist Republican lawyer types from the lower 48 gets a serious ass wuppin some day from one of the locals while trying to control the message.

Or is the mission of this pathetic Alaskan opera to protect the myth of Saint Sarah at all costs? It would be easier to take the hit on the investigation now than to deal with the continuous drip of leaks, which are really doing more harm to her.

user-pic

Not to speak of the harm to Alaskans!

it's always the coverup that kills you. Ask Nixon.

OT, but has anyone visited 538 lately?

My "Good-News-o-Meter" is off the charts!

PEACE

user-pic

It makes me breathe a sigh of relief too, but my "Good-News-o-Meter" remains static. It is too soon to rest. We need to keep up the push. AFTER Obama wins the election (hopefully), we can celebrate. Now it's just work, work, work.

Hey, Louise, you might be on to something...

An opera...

Hmmmmmmm....

or perhaps a movie by the Coen Brothers...

user-pic

I was thinking more along the lines of "Fear and Loathing: On the Campaign Trail '08". It's too bad the Hunter S. Thompson of 1972 isn't following this campaign.

user-pic

Hey Navy,

work your own side of the street, I was here first!

user-pic

Matt Damon has something to say about Sarah Palin and the movies.

When will TPM investigate firing Mort Plump, director of Ted Stevens International Airport with no replacement?

Poor Judgement? Bad Leadership... They said pack your bags, you are out! No plan, no replacement, no prior executive search

Palin would have brought in a airplane "enthusiast" from Wasilla.....

Remember, this is the party of those who believe that they create their own reality. Truth, therefore, is simply what these folks project at the moment. Then it changes. That is the definition of bullshit: where you do not care whether what you say is really true or not.

If our first amendment right's were questionable under Bu$h, there will be no questions under McCain.

I've met/known Moore and his wife - two people could not have more integrity.

It says volumes about Stapleton that she would invoke their college alumni in an effort to claim entitlement to favorable press.

KTUU has been a pillar of journalistic ethics in the State of Alaska - most of us are shocked and dismayed to see a former reporter (Stapleton) shilling for a carpetbagging campaigner (McCain). It was Bill McAllister that kept the pressure on the Murkowski administration when it came to secret meetings with the oil companies on the natural gas pipeline - now he's shilling for Palin? Did he have bias towards her all along? It changes my perspective on the past 4-5 years and there can't be a bigger argument for moving the capital out of Juneau and onto the mainland. (Warning: colloquial Alaska politics here)

I know this is petty and childish to say but I'll say this here (it's as good a place as any)...why do all the McCain henchmen and henchwomen look like they are being pinched in the --- ? This one, Fiorina, Bounds, et al. Look like they're underwear is riding up whenever they are photographed...so tense...chill uptight white folk...

user-pic

Could it be all that spying under bush? They've got the "goods" and are using that info to their advantage?

Now we know what Palin has been doing while staring at Russia. Learning to take down the media if they speak against her. Palin, Putin...pretty much the same thing?

These are scary people without ethics. Has anybody checked to see where Monica Goodling is working now? Anyone notice if she recently bought a parka?

Three rules for understanding political jargon:

Any bill with a derivation of "Fair" in the title, isn't.

Anyone saying they don't want to play the "blame game" is to blame.

Any committee with "Truth" in the title was created for the purpose of suppressing it.

Any flippant defying of reporters to play "stump the candidate" means "I'm a shallow presumptuous ignoramous, and if you press for more information, I'll pull some 'in what respect, Charlie?' dissembling response, because I've bullshitted my way through life in Alaska that way." What, that won't work in the lower 48?

user-pic

good one!

user-pic

fixed it up above (where it belonged)

Ouch!

Har har, Jason Moore is the brother-in-law of Trevor McCabe, former staffer for Ted Stevens who is up to his earballs in the CBC corruption investigations in Alaska.

Moore was also the spokesflak for Fran Ulmer, former Lt Governor under Tony Knowles, in her run for Governor in 2002.

Meg Stapleton is Rovian-like reptilian who used to work for the RNC as a speechwriter before she worked for KTUU television.

Next thing you know, they're going to be leaving dead Moose heads under the reporters' pillows.

Take *that*, Bullwinkle! Who's elite now?!

Am I the only one that read all the way through this article?

"Moore told TPMmuckraker that he and Stapleton [...] used to work together as co-anchors on KTUU. "We're friends," he said.

Nothing to see here.

Coverup! Coverup!

Why is Palin stonewalling the Troopergate investigation?

What is Sarah Palin hiding?

Also, why won’t Palin release her Tax Returns and Medical Records?

WHAT IS SARAH PALIN HIDING?!

Where is this “Open and Transparent Government” she keeps talking about?

user-pic

They're Republicans. They don't believe in government, let alone transparent government. What they really hated about Stalin was the fact that he made all of their hateful beliefs transparent.

user-pic

You'd be frantic too if you had to learn all that stuff from index cards while getting your hair done, trying on clothes, calling home, checking your email, [oops what happened to your email?]. Why just yesterday Palin learned the word "verbiage" pronounced verbage, and "construction bonds" - she used them in the wrong places but hey, give her a chance.

user-pic

HOW IS THIS NOT A RICO WORTHY ACT OF INTIMIDATION AND A FIRST ADMENDMENT VIOLATION?

Don't we have first amendment rights being suppressed here? That's evidence of federal crime, right? How about McCain wading into the Palin-specific state-level ongoing investigations? How is this jurisdictionally sound? Can we at least get an FBI investigation or something, maybe? At least non-state-appointed police representation?

How about open evidence of witness tampering and coercion? 10 folks suddenly not willing to testify? You must be kidding.

And apparently AG impeachment is "off the table" at the state level despite refusing to honor AK state law (legislator's subpoenas)?

This could be why they want their own country... dictatorship!

Good call on the Monty Python ID. She is Brave, Brave Sir Robin!

She is Brave, Brave Sir Robin!

They don't call her a pitbull for nothing.

With a nod to Wonkette, I would *not* hit that.

Does this loser have her brown boots ready???

Sure sounds like the stormtroopers coming....

Correction: The term "Hoya" refers either a current Georgetown student or alumnus/alumna of GU. The GU mascot is an English bulldog forever named "Jack."

Bill Clinton, for example, is a proud Hoya.

As a Hoya myself, I consider these two thugs O'Callaghan and Stapleton a disgrace to Hoyas everywhere. And rather cheap political hacks.

user-pic

Ms Monica G. is all busy trying to keep her law license.

Check out the last coupla days here at TPM Muckraker.

Ahh, happier days.

Governor-elect Palin's top three aides pictured here, all together and smily:

http://www.juneauempire.com/stories/120306/loc_20061203024.shtml

-Megan Stapleton.
Then, Palin's communication director. Now shrill.

-Mike Tibbles.
Then, COS. Now, on the skids after an affair with a Palin friend... and now Ted Stevens' campaign manager.

-John Bitney.
Then, appointments manager. Now, on the skids after an affair with a Palin friend.

Here's a picture of Palin and Robert Bork

According to this archived story by SJ Komarnistky of the Anchorage Daily News from September 28, 1996, convicted State Legislator Vic Korhing appears in a Television ad for Palin when she ran for Mayor of Wasilla.

What kind of loser refers to him/herself by their alma mater's mascot? I called a Banana Slug a liar one time and his girlfriend (a Geoduck) got super pissed.

Well, Meg Stapleton, for one.

As if they should be ashamed for violating "Hoya pride" or some such nonsense.

Does Meg have a ring on her finger? Didn't think so.

wrote moore and his bosses to commend him for his work. thought he may need a bit of moral support.

user-pic

Here's a suggestion Alaskans - Demand a recall

If the Governor and her ad's will not honor a legal suboponea - RECALL HER ASS!

As a Hoya myself, I consider these two thugs O'Callaghan and Stapleton a disgrace to Hoyas everywhere. And rather cheap political hacks.

Ditto.

Now divorced? didn't she just have a baby

Stapleton had her child about a year ago; left her job with Palin after the birth and didn't surface again until now. Worked for KTUU, was briefly with ACS as the lead PR person before going to work for Palin.

As for KTUU, Stapleton was there, Dan Fagan was there, McAllister was there ... now all flacking for or promoting the GOP in some form or another.

wow.

"Your husband just called two Hoyas liars."

identity politics at wrok (sic)

Georgetown? Isn't that an Eastern elitist school?

Jason Moore went to Washington State University, Edward R. Murrow's alma mater. I'd trust him over Stapleton any day.
