OIG Report May Indicate Gonzales Perjury

We noted yesterday that the Justice Department Office of the Inspector General issued a report on the found that former Attorney Gen. Alberto Gonzales had mishandled classified documents during his time in office -- and that the DOJ had decided not to press charges.

But that doesn't seem to be half as bad as what CQ Politics' Jeff Stein dug up -- fact checking Gonzales' testimony to investigators with . . . well, the report's own stipulated facts.

From CQ Politics' SpyTalk:

But the IG report shows that Gonzales did more than "mishandle" his notes, which included operational details on what he himself, somewhat ironically, called -- after it had leaked -- "one of the most highly protected [programs] in the United States ... a very, very secretive, protected program," and correspondence between congressional Intelligence Committee leaders and CIA chief Gen. Michael Hayden.

In a statement that doesn't pass the laugh test, Gonzales told IG investigators he didn't know the documents were secret.

Gonzales said that he was unaware of the classification level and compartmented nature of the NSA program he referenced in the notes. Gonzales also stated he did not recall thinking that the notes themselves were classified.

But the IG found the smoking gun -- in Gonzales's hand, no less.

The envelope containing documents related to the NSA surveillance program bore the handwritten markings, "TOP SECRET - EYES ONLY - ARG" [the attorney general's initials] followed by an abbreviation for the SCI codeword for the program.

Inside the envelope, moreover, were "documents relating to a detainee interrogation program," which were all classified with cover sheets and markings in the top and bottom margins, as Top Secret/Sensitive Classified Information.

May as well charge him so we can savor a little law and order out the criminal enterprise known as the George W Bush administration.

We all know that Dubya will be handing out pardons like Christmas candy this coming December anyway.

Were McBush to become Prez with Palin as VPres, I see them appointing Alberto as Secretary of Homeland Security. He has some of the qualifications of Michael Chertoff. How bad could he be?

The GOP could put him on the hustings to get the latino vote just as Palin can get the female vote. Were McBush to become Prez with Palin as VPres, I see them appointing Alberto as Secretary of Homeland Security. He has some of the qualifications of Michael Chertoff, except dual citizenship. How bad could he be?

"May Indictate"

would be more accuarately be stated as:

"Confirms".

Mishandling codeword-classified top secret national security documents (and having that mishandling be documented in a government report) should be enough to disbar Gonzales.

Who wants to write the letter?

State Bar of Texas
1414 Colorado St.
Austin, TX 78701
(512) 427-1463

That should get him off of his "assistant to the Special Master" case right quick.

Problem is... history (especially recent) has shown that both Republicans AND Democrats in Washington will lie to the public and will protect their own cronies, so when folks continue to vote for either of these parties, they are just playing ostrich and denying that they are supporting the demise of our democracy and expediting the next regime...

Supporting the lesser of two evils is still supporting evil...

Too bad for the future generations to follow.... IMHO

Now he'll claim he can't read!

Maybe his glasses either were misplaced, or needed a new correction would be more 'credible' from a Harvard Law grad? These ivy league schools should insert ethics into their curricula, or fire those who already teach it, because it plainly isn't working.

As a fellow Rice grad, I bow my head in shame...

I wish you America-hating liberals would get off Fredo's ass. He obviously accidentally got the secret documents stuck to his shoe as he strolled out after putting in an 18-hour day figuring out ways to destroy our Constitution. Besides, as pv2k noted, everyone is a winner in elementary school and will get pardoned, including W and Cheney.

Bulverdespudboy,
which is why the newly convened "secret "grand juries will not hand out any recommendations for indictments until after bushcheney leave office .. Ixnay on the pardonsay otay ?!!

Don't be confused by the idea that this was a classified "detainee" program.

Nope.

It's about chipping and mind controlling political enemies that sign DOJ OIG complaints.

It's about FBI'S OPERATION SLAMMER used for political purposes to neutralize a lawsuit or the filing of a motion seeking injunctive relief.

It's about murdering and frying US citizens in their homes using microwave radiation.
