Palin As Reformer? Not Quite...

As we get ready for the big Sarah Palin speech tonight, it's worth taking a moment to step back from the charges of negligent vetting and media sexism, to focus on what really should be the heart of the issue.

The McCain campaign has presented Palin as a squeaky-clean reformer, who took on corruption in Alaska, and will help to bring a new brand of politics to Washington. But a flurry of reports over the last few days significantly undercut that image.

To be sure, Palin's claims to be a reformer aren't toally without merit. Before becoming governor, she went after the state GOP chair, Randy Ruedrich, for doing work for the party on public time and working closely with a company he was supposed to be regulating. She also filed a formal complaint against Attorney General Gregg Renkes for having investments in an energy company that stood to benefit from a state trade deal. Both Ruedrich and Renkes ultimately resigned their posts, and Ruedrich paid a $12,000 fine.

But let's look at the other side of the ledger. Both as mayor of Wasilla and as governor, Palin has aggressively sought federal earmarks, and has a friendlier relationship with indicted GOP senator Ted Stevens than one would expect for a good-government crusader. She has fired employees who she sees as disloyal. And, in a move reminiscent of the Bush-Cheney White House, she has stonewalled legitimate efforts by the legislature to uncover the truth in the Trooper-Gate affair.

Here's a sampling of reports that complicate Palin's reformist credentials:

  • Last year, Palin requested more earmarks per person than any other state -- including some that were criticized by McCain himself.

  • Even as mayor of Wasilla, Palin's pursuit of earmarks was aggressive. She oversaw the hiring of a Washington lobbyist -- who, as we reported yesterday, had ties to Jack Abramoff -- to go after federal pork.

  • And though Palin touted her opposition to the "Bridge to Nowhere" just last week in her debut speech, she initially supported the project during her run for governor. It was only after the bridge became notorious as an example of pork barrel spending that she changed her position.
  • In her run for governor, Palin was endorsed by now-indicted Sen. Ted Stevens. Video of the endorsement has been removed from her government website, but the two appeared together just two months ago at a press conference on energy. The friendly relationship between the embattled senator, who is accused of lying about gifts he recieved from an oil contractor, and the supposedly maverick governor is at odds with Palin's claim to dismantling the "old boys club" of Alaska government.

  • As Wasilla mayor, Palin reportedly fired the police chief and attempted to fire the librarian, because she did not feel that she had their "full support in [her] efforts to govern the city of Wasilla." Former city officials allege that the attempts to remove the librarian were a result of her her refusal to censor books at Palin's request.
  • Palin has been at the center of the Trooper-Gate scandal that alleges misuse of her gubernatorial power. The affair erupted in July when Palin fired the Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan. Monegan later claimed his firing was a result of his refusal to fire Palin's former brother-in-law and trooper Mike Wooten. Palin denied that she, her husband or her staff ever pressured Monegan, a statement she later had to retract when recorded phone calls revealed one of her aides, Frank Bailey, had called a troopers office pushing for Wooten's removal.
  • Tonight, the Washington Post published emails from Palin to Monegan in which she appeared to complain that Wooten was still employed, apparently undercutting her claim that she discussed Wooten with Monegan only in the context of the security of her family.
  • As a result of the Trooper-Gate allegations, an independent investigator has been appointed by the state legislature. In recent days, Palin has appeared to stonewall the probe. Her lawyer argued in a complaint filed last night that she wold not be made available for her deposition unless the probe were handed over to the state personnel board, whose members are appointed by the governor. Bailey, who had been suspended by Palin with pay for his actions, today backed out of his deposition.
  • In a separate civil suit related to Wooten, Palin has claimed executive privilege on over a thousand emails between her and her staff, including Bailey.

YOu forgot that she also had a child out of wedlock. (like her daughter)

Really? Which one? She conceived her first child while unmarried, but had been married eight months when he was born. And, by the way, whichof her daughters has had an illegitmate child?

In other words, another Bush-style Republican.

Oops I have to correct my last post....she got pregnant out of wedlock. She got married before the child was born...according ot Wikipedia.

It's really hard to be a "reformer" when you're a money-grubbin', Ted Stevens-lovin', secession-lovin' GOoper hack.

Rudy Giuliani looks like he's doing stand-up comedy....oh so impressive!

Supposedly, that goes for Bristol, as well.

As gov., she also showed her fiscal responibility by cutting 20% of the budget to an organization that provided support - housing, medical etc. - to unwed teenage mothers for up to 18 months while they dealt with a new bady.

Is Bady a freudian slip?

As an ALASKAN I can say that Sarah Palin is a 'what you see is what you get' person.

She is a typical Alaskan woman. We invented 'take no prisoners'.

I'm proud to be an independent ALASKAN woman......who doesn't take cr*p from anyone.

And I think Sarah will be a wonderful vice president. She is a great governor. The 'old boys' are still trying to 'get' her.

And by the way, disregard the comments about the trooper 'firing'. In my opinion the only thing worse that a sleazy cop is his chief for allowing it to happen. And Monahan was NOT fired. He QUIT because he didn't want to accept a transfer to be the chief of the alcohol board. Sour grapes smell Walt.

So taking someone who is qualified for their job and transferring them because they won't re-prosecute a situation they already handled is proper governance to you?

Oh yeah, you support an independent Alaska woman who fired a whole Agriculture board for disagreeing with her, as well as a significant number of public servants in Wasilla because they weren't loyal.

That's independence we can believe in.

The name is Monegan. And why the stonewalling by Palin?

Palmerbuyer:

Let me be the first to say what everyone else is thinking ... LIAR.

And I thought Gulags were only in Russia! Since Alaska is but a stones throw away from Russia it looks like those Russian gulags migrated and settled in.

Let's see when is her first interview with the media?

I doubt it will ever happen.

Mocking Obama is sure a losing strategy...

I hope American see the McWar-McPalin duo a gimmick, a scam...

Please wake up America...

Watching Olbermann on MSNBC. He called her "great." Was he kidding? Chris Matthews and David Gregory were drooling. My God. I thought she BOMBED.

Yes MSNBC have become a joke since McPalin has been chosen. I am actually can not believe how quickly they have changed...

What happened? Did someone get to Olbermann? I know Chris Matthews can be bought and David Gregory sways like a palm tree.

Too bad they didn't vet her, maybe they would know!

Olbermann's a whore. He likes to bark and pretend to be a man, but at the end of the day he just whimpers, "Please, sir - may I have another?" whenever his corporate masters frown. The corporate heads let him play at liberal politics for the same reason Limbaugh's corporate heads let him play Nazi: Ratings.

As for this Palin witch: You Obama followers had better hope your guy does better against the repub haters than Gore or Kerry did. Complacency kills, folks. And those a**holes are still better at setting the agenda than the Dems.

May I suggest you read former Alaska State Representative Andrew Halco's personal website for dirt on Sarah Palin?

It's a storehouse of scandal on the Palin Administration. And I think it was the source of the early rumors about Bristol Palin's pregnancy.

Here's a very interesting article on her husband Todd's oversize influence in state meetings. The guy's like Dick Cheney - got his fingers in everything...

http://ww.andrewhalcro.com/shadow_governor

Other lawmakers have shared similar stories and were shocked at how inappropriate Todd's presence was at meetings with the governor. Yesterday on the Dan Fagan Show, Representative Jay Ramras mentioned that Todd was working lawmakers offices during the ACES debate.

But more importantly, Todd's fingerprints on trying to impact personnel decisions appear to go beyond the current scandal revolving around State Trooper Mike Wooten.

Consider the story of one of Governor Palin's former trusted advisors, John Bitney...

Apparently Todd and Sarah have a well established habit of getting anyone fired that gets in their way.

Be sure to read the comments too.

I was reading that too. Makes me wonder if he/they may have their hands into some insider trading. Would explain his presence. And if Alaska is as laid back as Palin and everyone else who claims to be from Alaska says, it would be an idea situation to manipulation legislation to reward companies whom they have investment interests with. Seems to me, she has ratted on other people in government positions for that. So she could be just as guilty, but has taken the extra steps to keep her activities underwraps so noone suspects.

You guys are full of it.

Palin delivered a good speech. She's not going away. Olbermann and Matthews told the truth. Don't tell me you can't handle it.

No, now the Obama campaign has to figure out how to trump the Republican's play. Not for a second do I believe they're unable to do so, that they require validation from Olbermann and Matthews.

They need to hit - HARD - on what you heard not a word about tonight - health care, job loss, corruption in Washington by the people who ACTUALLY control it.

And they'll win.

Quit whining about the media here. Often it's justified. Not tonight.

As much as her speech pissed me off and had me rolling my eyes, I agree to a large extent.

Her speech was EXCELLENT for energizing her base and getting the Republicans fired up. I wouldn't be surprised if she gets a bit of bounce from it. However, I don't think the tone of it did anything to attract independents and undecideds. The ones I spoke to found it off-putting and they were repulsed rather than attracted. It was like being confronted by little more than a snarling pitbull when what they wanted was to learn more about her character and how she was going to help people such as themselves.

Like I heard someone else say on another blog:

"Close your eyes and try to imagine her as president. Now stop shuddering, open your eyes, and vote for Obama."

The media has yet to go after either of them. If they ever do grow hair on their kahunas, they'll rip that mask off and expose her as nothing more than a gold-digger.

The Palins also have a number of real estate holdings in Big Lake, AK co-owned by Debbie and Scott Richter. The properties are organied as "Richter Investments LLC." The Richters also own a portion of the Palins residence in Wasila... (Assuming the Palins live rent free right now in the Governors' Mansion in Juneau).

Interestingly, Debbie Richter was Palin's campaign treasurer. Richter was awarded a job as the Director of the Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend Division for her service. For those who don't know, the State of Alaska gives its citizens "free money" checks every year out of this fund. This "free money" comes from oil royalties collected and investments. The Fund is currently worth $35 billion.

Would you choose the Governor's campaign treasurer - and property co-owner - to honestly hand out oil royalties? Under her leadership in 2006, all Permanent Fund claims from residents (you have to make a claim for your check) were lost in a computer data entry failure...

The speech was good in several ways. It was well-delivered; she has good timing, can get off a good zinger line, and read a teleprompter without sounding like George Bush. The speech was also well-crafted for its audience in the hall, a real pitbull sort of message for the far right. And it was attack, attack, attack. She managed to puff herself up by tearing down Obama.

That's the good news for her. The bad news for her is that this speech, with its sarcasm, condescension, and nasty edge will drive independents and undecideds into the Obama camp. She's mean, and it shows. And for people who aren't rabid Republican loyalists, the whole "I ran for the PTA and am a hockey mom" is not going to be very reassuring given the state of the economy and the fact we are fighting two wars.

More bad news: Now Joe Biden can take the gloves off.

I still can't get over the utter ridiculousness of Republicans branding themselves as reformers, Palin, McCain whoever they may be.

What are they going to reform? The mess their party created over the last 28 years and topped off in the last 8?

Elect us to save yourself from us?

I can only hope that sufficient numbers of Americans won't be so gullible and fall all those rabid lies.

They cannot talk about issues, about substance or about details of the plans they hope to accomplish. Their whole plan and their whole response is to attack Obama and talk about what good experienced people they are. There is nothing there but a continuation of the Bush disaster...absolutely nothing but generalized rhetoric equivalent to ..."I would just sit the Sunnis and Shiites down and say stop the bullshit".

They are all caught up with the "splurge" but no one has ever really taken that apart for them and put it into perspective that is realistic. Being wrong for 39 yrs is not experience...it's a reputation. McCain has never made any decisions, only suggestions which generally were wrong and ignored.

Rather than just admit Palin has no national security experience or C in C exp and talk about what she does have the repubs remain deceitful, trying to make up stuff to justify trying to make it seem Palin has no weaknesses...bullshit.

No matter how they spin it it was a decision based on Political needs and not the good of the country.

Once again...judgment and leadership skills TRUMP experience. Wanting to continue the failed policies of the Bush administration is not change.
Having a law degree, a doctorate and Being a Constitutional law professor at the University of Chicago gives more executive ability than trying to get creationism taught in schools and denying global warming. Give me someone who has studied and taught constitutional law over someone who believes the Flintstones are actual history any day.
McCain would rather start a war than lose an election no matter what you think of Palin she is just another stooge, pulled from out of nowhere to do stooge work...Yup, yup, yup. We are talking about leading a nation not starring in a soap opera. The reality is that McCain and company will only prosper the wealthy and get us all killed trying to prove how tough he thinks he is. He has clearly shown on several occasions that he is unfit to be president and so is his Palin puppet. Hypocrisy knows no bounds with these two.

When you say McCain would rather start a war,be careful. I just read that he's saying he knows where Osama is and will take him out if elected. Unfortunately, that would be Pakistan. And they do have the bomb, and it's been reported this week that the Taliban has free rein to walk about the country unmolested. Furthermore, the Taliban seems to be working their way into the legislative branch to influence lawmakers to their ideology. So if McShame does go after Osama, we could be faced with a nuclear exchange cause the Pakistanis are a bit testy about US border intrusions via troops and missiles that are killing many innocent citizens for just couple of Taliban terrorists.

Thank you to Mr Martin from CNN. I have lots of reservation about him, but his reaction to McPalin speech is great.

He is going after McPalin because she mocked "Community Organizers", and he went after her...

I am glad to see that there are some people taking the courage to take on the issues.

This speech was full of mockery and hate.

And the democrats have to respond forcefully to this kind of insults.

Obama 08

Can we expect these great reformers to go after the unlawful acts of the Bush/Cheney regime?

Should we expect to see them ride their high horses and go after Gonzales and maybe Rove?

My guess is reform only goes skin deep with these two.

She lied. Plain and simple. In her first major speech before the electorate she lied about being against the bridge to nowhere. She lied about Obama's record as a congressman (remember REPUBLICAN Dick Lugar's glowing praise for Obama?) Every one of those talking heads proclaiming her "great speech" sat there, knowing she was lying, then praised her when it was done. And not one of them called her on it. Even the AP called her on it ("Attacks, Praise stretch truth at GOP Convention") but not one of the TV commentators said a damned thing about it, and the media narrative will now be all about her "smash hit" at the convention. Don't think so? CBS has the headline on their page "Sarah Palin Delivers Smash Hit In St. Paul" in which the writer Vaughn Ververs declares in the last line: "...if this was the first exam, she easily aced it."
Pretty easy to "ace" those exams when you know you can cheat, and not get called on it, eh?
Reformer my ass. Just yet another lying corrupt Republican being foisted upon an unsuspecting public with the help of the timid and complicit media, only this time the MSM won't be able to blame their complicity on "bad intelligence."

Four more wars? hell no. Obama-Biden '08

Let's face it, the McCain campaign is going to be about attack, attack, attack because they have absolutely nothing to run on except "drill, drill, drill".

For all the late vetting of Palin she delivered that speech because she has been holed up in seclusion being prepared ever since McCain decided to pick her at the last minute. But, after seeing that speech and the McCain camp crying "sexism and biased reporting by the media" all bets are off that anyone has to tip toe around her. Now she has a perfect excuse to head back to Alaska as her son leaves for Iraq on 9/11. Just watch how the McCain camp will make her unavailable to the media after (thank God) someone revealed directly after her speech that she was for the bridge to nowhere before she was against it, she hired a lobbyist to lobby for earmarks, she was almost recalled as the mayor of Wasilla, she has used her power to fire people even the librarian when she refused to ban books that Palin deemed inappropriate. And her personal life has barely been touched on, with the exception of her daughter when she was forced to reveal that before the story broke. There is much more yet to come and she can't hide from the media forever. But let's not forget this all boils down to McCain's judgement and what kind of decisions he would make as President.

Not only is she not a reformer -- she's an anti-Semite.

When she first ran for mayor of Wasilla against the incumbent, a man whose last name was Stein, she claimed she would be "Our first Christian mayor."

Never mind that Stein was raised a Lutheran. You know damn well she wouldn't have said that if his name was Smith.

As Stein told The New York Times:

"I thought: ‘Holy cow, what’s happening here? Does that mean she thinks I’m Jewish or Islamic?'"

And just two weeks ago, she attended her church when the founder of Jews for Jesus spoke.

What we have here is a george bush republican. Someone who loves to spend taxpayer money, loves the tall tale, and pretends to be the down to earth red-blooded american. Someone who lives in a state next to a foreign country to get that international experience. Someone who claims to want to change washington by having those around them toe the line of undying, ever-illegal support at all costs. You get the idea, and feel free to add your ideas of what a bush/palin republican is made of.

Two foreign countries. Russia and Canada. I'd love to hear her thoughts on border security with Canada.

This is good work. Stay away from the family gunk; let that play itself out however it may. Corruption is the key. For god's sake, Alaska is WORSE than Louisiana! Ted Stevens ran the state like he was a territorial governor on Deadwood. Palin could not get anywhere without his blessing. Let's establish the connections are between Stevens (indicted), Rep. Young (nearly indicted), and Palin (VP?). Reformer my rump! Great work. Keep it up.

So, McCain's strategy is to declare war on the media for daring to ask questions. He's pretty much gotten softball handling up to this point. Now the public vetting of him and his VP decision REALLY begins.

And Palin insulted community organizers everywhere. Somehow the crowd that roared at that line (twice!) overlooked that many delegates are community organizers. Forget that many USAmerican heroes (e.g. MLK) are community organizers. And what's with the RNC derision of community service?

But so, her bold statements and snide sarcasm (however sweetly delivered) will ultimately highlight the contradictions with the facts. Her "no thank you" line to the Bridge to Nowhere will come back to haunt her -- she still said thank-you and accepted the money. And the McCain camp's refusal to let her be interviewed will similarly read as what it is.

Her speech worked well for THAT audience -- but it will have a harder time playing outside of the convention hall.

P.S. As for last night, give Gov. Palin her due, there was a lot of pressure and she handled it. Give her props for that but remember what she actually did: She read a speech written by George W. Bush's speechwriter.

Is that reform?

Two final observations about Palin's speech:

1. Take another look at the short segment where she discusses foreign affairs (20-21 minutes of the speech). She was barely able to remember how to pronounce the names and stumbled badly. Something to note.

2. Forget about the speech delivery and focus on its content: the black-is-white, who-you-gonna-believe-me-or-your-lyin'-eyes cynicism is absolutely breathtaking. This is a Bush Speech. 100%.

That's all I got.

If you haven't read this email/comment (link below) from Anne Kilkenny regarding her 16-year experience with Sarah Palin, DO IT!! Ms. Kilkenny has a lot to say, for example, that reformer image? Not so much. According to Ms. Kilkenny (a homemaker with no ax to grind and nothing to lose), word is that Palin outed GOP chair Ruedrich's shenanigans as an excuse to get out of a job she hated. She'd been appointed a plum job (by then-governor Murkowski) as Chair of the Oil & Gas Conservation Commission. Palin had absolutely no oil and gas experience and soon learned that she hated the work. When she got wind of Ruedrich's misdeeds, she saw a way to get out of the job and look good doing it!!

Anyhooo, the whole Kilkenny email is quite revealing; and if even half of it is true, Palin could be worse than anyone imagines.
