Palin Hires Lawyer for Trooper-Gate Investigation
MSNBC just reported that presumptive vice-presidential nominee and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has hired a lawyer in relation to the Trooper-Gate scandal.
Alaska State Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Hollis French told TPMmuckraker that Palin has hired Thomas Van Flein, an Anchorage attorney at the law firm of Clapp, Peterson, Van Flein, Tiemessen & Thorsness. French said that Van Flein has already been in contact with him, regarding the ongoing investigation of Palin.
Van Flein has represented the Alaska Dental Society and according to a cached version of his firm website, specializes in professional liability -- including licensing issues, commercial litigation, appellate practice, and employment law.
From the AP:
Anchorage attorney Thomas V. Van Flein has requested a copy of all witness statements and documentary evidence from the Legislature's investigator, Stephen Branchflower. Sen. Hollis French, an Anchorage Democrat, says he instructed Branchflower not to comply with the request.

"maybe they'll toss her over before the confirm her."
Probably, but I'm hoping they wait a lot longer than that.
The longer the better as far as I'm concerned. Most of the damage has probably been done, assuming everything has now come out (doesn't seem too likely).
It's great poetic justice considering how hard McBush's people tried to hype the Obama-Clinton feud (their own version of the bridge to nowhere).

You can bet the farm on this: the Romney camp (including pledged delegates) is furiously talking up Troopergate, Knockedupgate, and anything else they can dig up in 30 minutes of oppo research (that being more than the McCain vetters did).
The next 3 days are gonna be good.

Well the major rap against Sarah Palin is that she had very little experience at the national level. It is great to see that by lawyering up, a la Rove, Libby, Bush, Cheney in the Valerie Plame leak case, that the good governor is getting fast track learning curve. Major kudos to John McCain at whose feet Sarah Palin is supposed to be gaining all this knowledge.

Forget it folks. Doesn't matter how much trouble she's in. Unless she's actually indicted, the Repubs will insist with great determination that black is white and day is night. And with the help of the MSM, they'll shout down anyone who suggests otherwise.
I wish it weren't true, but...

Just think, it is improper to ask difficult questions of a POW, and it is improper to ask difficult questions of a "soccer mom", so this may be the best ticket the Repubs could come up with.

Hiring a lawyer is one of those things that people tend to think of badly when in fact it just makes good sense. She would be stupid not to hire a lawyer for any kind of a serious deposition but the optics are terrible, especially at the high point of a political campaign.

The stupidity continues. You gotta figure the Romney and Pawlenty camps are giving high-fives. At this point I'm not sure McCain is even qualified to be mayor Wasila.

Considering that the "Investigator" was appointed by some of Palin's enemies, good thing she is lawyering up. Alaska politics is a rat's nest of blowhards and thieves and they all resent Sarah "Barracuda." Do serious research on "Troopergate" and find a different story than the one put out by those trying to make something out of nothing to help Obama. Some of the bloviators on here need to do their factcheck before they post. It is easy, start with google and read both sides, plus factcheck.org, an Annenberg backed web site, which means it leans liberal.

I have read all about this case and it seems pretty clear that, whatever went on in her sister's divorce, Palin 1. abused her power, 2. lied about it. What have you read that suggests that either of those things is untrue?

Larry,
you should look for the recording of a staffer calling the trooper's administrative office trying to influence the investigation. Don't most folks know that when you call a police department you are being recorded ?
this was after statements denying any contact by anyone in the administration...
I think you can find it on this site.

Actually, this investigation was authorized by a bipartisan Alaskan legislative group.
Bipartisan.
Bipartisan.
Do you know what bipartisan means.
If she is such a masterful Governor as they would have us believe, with such wonderful Executive experience and abilities, then she should surely have had friends in that legislative body.

September 1, 2008 7:19 PM | Reply | Permalink
Absolutely accurate Mark. And the guy who got the job of picking the investigator is Senator Hollis French, a Democrat from Anchorage. He picked Steve Branchflower.
"Branchflower, who served as an Assistant District Attorney in Anchorage from 1974-1998, held numerous positions which required him to work extremely closely with the Anchorage Police Department, where Walt Monegan would become chief in 2001. He provided legal advice to APD officers, trained APD officers, and was even a co-founder of the APD’s Homicide Response Team. His wife also worked as a detective for the APD, not retiring until 2002, meaning that she worked under Walt Monegan. " See floppingaces.
Soooo, Palin has launched a investigation of her own as well she might.
At the same time, I will absolutely grant that in the small population of Alaska, it would be real hard to find a qualified investigator who did not have a bias one way or the other.
The bottom line is the Palin had the right to terminate Monegan. She tried to be nice about it. That didn't work.
Now here is something interesting. There is a bloger supposedly in Alaska, who since April has been attacking Palin at length. The name is "syrin." And "she" says:
"As a Republican women I'm committed to strengthening our Republican Party." Er, women? or Woman :-)
There is a guy up there by the name of Halcro, who inherited his dad's business (Avis) in Alaska, who has his ax out for Palin. He lost the Governor's election to her. Any bets on who is behind some of the anti-Palin stuff?
The closer you get to the dailykos version of Sarah Palin, the greater danger you have of making her a sympathetic figure with the American public. Guess what that means.

Two points here: (a) what is strange is that Palin did not hire a lawyer in the first place. Why now? Was she too naive to think she needed a lawyer before? Presumably the campaign sees a need to drag the investigation out until after the election. (b) I was shocked that both Abrams and Mitchell seemed unaware of the details of the controversy. Abrams suggested that the brother-in-law had been fired; Mitchell implied that this was an investigation begun by Palin's political enemies. How about just reporting the facts?

I find it troubling that the infotainment talking heads don't really know the details about Troopergate. There is Local Alaskan news reports available on line that have her on tape contradicting herself on both if somebody from her office contacted Monegan about firing Wooten and then why Monegan was fired.
On the latter point, it was rather obvious that she tried to promote Monegan out of his role - she commended him on his work on rural bootlegging and alcoholism issues when recommending him for a new job focusing on that area. And then when she fired him, one reason given was "He wasn't doing enough to combat rural bootlegging and alcoholism".

The best rundown I have seen on "Troopergate" is here:
http://www.floppingaces.net/2008/08/29/palins-troopergate-beating-msm-distortions-to-the-truth/
Ok, this is a rightwing site. But that doesn't mean their facts are offbase, just their opinions. I read enough of their links and the documentation to believe that they are spot on that a)Palin fired Menegan for the reasons she gave and b) the trooper is a jerk who deserved to be fired. One key detail is that the Trooper who has been in charge of security for the past six governors TOLD Todd Palin to call Monegan.
I think this is a credible and fairly complete rundown on this socalled troopergate. And by the way jonze, please give ALL the reasons she fired him rather than a selected one so you can make a bogus point.
Personally, I don't think Palin is qualified to be President by time in grade and experience. But I don't need to come up with bogus "Facts" to make that case. Anyway, allastair and others, please go to the web site and read the facts, especially the LINKS and consider the timeline.
And considering the timeline, note that Palin was part of Steven's 527 in 2003 - and quit. Nothing wrong with participating in a 527 like moveon or dailydos, right?

The practical impact of Palin lawyering up is that the investigation will not now be concluded on schedule by October. A Judge will now put a gag order on both sides, which means that the American people will be denied the data to make an intelligent decision on the merits of this abuse of power issue. George W. Bush should be proud.

She's the perfect candidate in the age of American Idol: the girl next door who makes the improbable leap from an ice-fishing shack to an undisclosed location. Troopergate is too convoluted to catch on, and it will within a week blend in with the buzz of the cicadas. You're all laughing here, but people don't care about it. As with Bush, ruddy cheeks are all that's necessary. Ruddy cheeks, a few talking points, a few bromides from Dubya's favorite philosopher, and you're gold.
There are two possibilities regarding the lawyering. Either she's setting up an "I've become a distraction" exit, or, more likely, she's adding a few knots and wrinkles (and months) to the investigation.
People are frickin' flocking to see this woman at appearances. $47million for McCain in August. She's a fresh face, which is, literally, all it takes. I came home today to check what the chatter was online. My wife, a brilliant, savvy lady, came over and, once she saw what I was reading, peered in to look at the pic of Palin, and said, "Oh, she wore her hair down."
My heart sank.

"Intrusive Personal Questions" from the Palin Vetting Questionnaire
"Mr. McCain’s advisers said repeatedly on Monday that Ms. Palin was 'thoroughly vetted'"- The New York Times
Palin "responded to a 70-question form that included 'intrusive personal questions' a senior campaign aide said today."- The Washington Post
"Intrusive Personal Questions" from the Palin Vetting Questionnaire:
1) Did we forget anything?
2)Why are we choosing you if we discovered all of this?
3) Secession from your own country is
a) Patriotic
b) A qualification to be the potential leader of that country
c) Maverick-y!
d) None of the above
4) Did we forget anything?
5) Moose Burger : Abstinence as Moose Hunting :
a) Brother-in-law
b) 50 state flag
c) Bridge to Nowhere (after it was made impossible)
d) All of the above
6) Three Vice Presidential candidates are moving from three equidistant fixed points towards a podium. One, in his slightly glazed stare and awkwardly quasi-combative speech bears a faint resemblance to Dan Quayle; the next can only assist the ticket as we near closer to Rapture; the third seems to have stumbled out of one of Christopher Buckley's sharper efforts. Which one arrives at the podium first?
7) "Nothing that has come out did not come out in the vet." This sentence actually means:
a) Everything has come out and everything has been vetted
b) Everything that was vetted has come out
c) Everything that has come out was vetted
d) The vet came out and vetted the vets vetter than anything has ever been vetted. Really.
8) You are a right-wing, red-state conservative. During the Clinton Administration, you believed that President Clinton's behavior with Monica Lewinsky disqualified him from the Presidency on moral grounds; you fervently raised the terms "Lincoln Bedroom" and "Johnny Chung" to invoke notions of utter corruption, and regarded the "Travelgate" firings as an abuse of power. In the face of the recent revelations regarding Palin's directorship of Ted Stevens' 527, support of the Bridge to Nowhere, "Troopergate" imbroglio, and illegitimate pregnancy of her 16 year old daughter, you:
a) Blame George Soros
b) Talk about Bill Clinton instead of Palin
c) Hold your hands over your ears and loudly shout "La la la"
d) Try to change the subject
9) "Foreign policy experience" includes:
a) Being near another large nation
b) Seceding from your own country and then taking up residence in the new nation
c) Being close to "Nowhere" in your support for the Bridge to Nowhere, which is different than being "Somewhere"
d) Blame George Soros
10) If you were seeking to choose as your running mate someone who would please Evangelical Conservatives with very traditional values, who would be without taint of corruption or misuse of government power, and someone who, in line with your campaign's own slogan, would put "Country First", after thorough vetting and "intrusive personal questions", you would choose someone who:
a) Supported the Bridge to Nowhere
b) Supported the secession of Alaska from the U.S. (Slogan: "Alaska First!")
c) Was the subject of a state ethics investigation due to allegations that she had tried to have her brother-in-law fired and that she fired the state public safety commissioner due to his unwillingness to fire the brother-in-law
d) Would suffer from allegations that her 16 year old child had become pregnant illegitimately, despite her fervent support for abstinence only sex education
e) None of the above

The public search also unearthed details of the Legislature's investigation into the dismissal of Alaska's public safety commissioner, allegedly because he would not fire Palin's former brother-in-law as a state trooper.
Culvahouse said he asked follow-up questions, and "spent a lot of time with her lawyer" on the matter.
"We came out of it knowing all that we could know at the time," he said.
But didn't she just hire a lawyer for the troopergate scandal??

As the GOP deals with Hurrican Gustav and Hurricane Paliln, the Right says we on the left are afraid of Palin or Jealous of her because we are dong what he should have done Vetted Her! What we are upset about is the hypocrisy of McCain to (for months) label Barack as an empty suit, has no experience, etc., etc. and then to pick a VP "beauty queen" who is up for ethics investigation, who is completely unqualified, and shows very little intellectual capacity, just because she is a Woman in a dishonest attempt to Steal Hillary women, is prepostorous and foolhardy (fools rush in where Angels fear to tread). And we are terrified because John McCain is old and not in the best of health and there is a very REAL possibility that this woman who is not fit to be President could be president. That is outrageous! And a slap in the face to the American people. It is dangerous and reckless and this man has to be stopped! This — McCain’s Rush to Judgment — has unveiled the true persona (a dangerous, foolhardy and reckless man who puts party first before the country)! His campaign motto "Country First" is a lie and a deception — something GOP is good at, but not anymore. The Truth shall Prevail!

Unsurprised
"No Surprises From Palin, McCain Team Says"-Washington Post
Senior McCain officials described themselves as "unsurprised" today as huge storms of locusts flew from Wasilla, Alaska and descended upon McCain campaign headquarters. "Locusts were vetted. Locusts were vetted in the vet" said one campaign official, who spoke without attribution out of concern that he would be devoured by a verminous flying cloud. The campaign also said that they were nonplussed by reports that the rivers were running black with ashes, that family pets were begin to speak in human voices, declaiming "Release Sarah!", and that a huge spreading stain was beginning to blot out the Northern sun. "Vetted" said the campaign.
"There are exciting new studies that show that locusts can be used as a source of biodegradable fuel" said Newt Gingrich, as he hunkered down to avoid the black marble obelisks falling from the sky around him. "Palin, if she can be said to have played a role in bringing about these new biofuel resources, should be praised for her innovative role in the solution to our future energy demands".
"These events firmly demonstrate Palin's deep connection to traditional modes of traditional expression, in traditional forms, traditionally." said William Kristol, editor of the Weekly Standard. "Experience, in the face of these more traditional events, is overrated..." continued Kristol, before ending the interview to wrap himself head-to-toe in mosquito netting and swallowing a bitter tasting anti-malarial drug, the taste of which, as his lips contorted, he noted to be "surprisingly refreshing."
Palin's schedule in the upcoming days of the Republican National Convention has been cut short due to, as one McCain communications aide reported, a desire not to "let the magic out of the bottle too quickly." "Sarah is a precious resource, who each moment brings a new vitality and energy to every worker on the campaign" said the aide, while fighting to remove the nest of serpents which had suddenly materialized on the floor beneath him, and were now slowly ascending his legs. "Do these bite, or just slink?" asked the aide, who spoke on conditions of anonymity so as not to provoke or otherwise alienate the reptiles.
Meanwhile, as the heavens darkened, the seas began to boil, and the voice tore through the clouds shouting, in deep, stentorian tones to one and all "It was a Mistake!", campaign offices described themselves as "unperturbed". "Serpents materializing, house pets suddenly called to vocal advocacy, Celestial callings to revise and repent...Vetted" said the spokesman, speaking on condition of anonymity as he was turning into a pillar of salt. "Everything that was vetted was vetted in the vet."
