Palin Warned of Trooper-Gate "Wolves" by Ethics Adviser, Letter Shows
Sarah Palin was counseled by an ethics adviser on the gravity of the allegations against her in the burgeoning Trooper-Gate scandal -- and encouraged to apologize -- letters reviewed by the Wall Street Journal show.
A former U.S. attorney, Wevley Shea, wrote two letters (pdf) to the Alaska governor, once in July and once in early August, stating that Palin's "'political advisors' have given you poor cousel; the situation is now grave. . . I am extremely concerned about certain 'wolves' if my recommended action is not taken immediately."
Shea gave the following recommendations to Palin in a letter dated July 24:
Apologize for not personally terminating Commissioner of Public Safety Walt Monegan. Apologize for your statements regarding Commissioner Monegan in Press Release no. 08-125. Apologize, with Todd, for overreaching or peceived overreaching on Trooper Mike Wooten. Terminate any "state advisor" who addressed Trooper Wooten with Commissioner Monegan. Withdraw former Kenai Police Chief Chuck Kopp's name as Commissioner of Public Safety. Do not, in writing [as in Press Release no. 08-125], "define" the credibility of state employees.
Palin had previously commissioned Shea in late 2006 to co-write an ethics report recommending new financial-disclosure rules for elected and appointed statehouse officials.

wolves?! ha!
'you know what we do with wolves up here in alaska? we chase them with helicopters until they are too tired to run away any more and then we shoot them in the head!'
'and that's what we plan on pretending to do to those 'wolves' we lied about the democrats sending up to alaska to dig up all the dirt on me that's just sitting around all over the place. like that $3 million earmark i left over there by the 'snowmobile' (as you sissy cosmopolitan wimps in the lower 48 call 'em)'
'any ethics wolves can chase us all they want! we've got helicopters! they're just wolves. what, like they're gonna catch me in wolf killing machine?!'

It's subliminal. There's something both sexy and dangerous. (that's my take) Smiling through her teeth while plotting mischief?
Honestly if this person were in therapy (Do not send this woman!) with me, I'd watch that to see when it occurs. And I would not think it was accidental. And I would think it might relate to some type of defense mechanism or character trait.

Good call.
I'm wondering if Commissioner Monegan, John Bitney, and the Wasilla librarian might be familiar with that odd, tongue-in-the-teeth smile, too.

It's the "smile" of a double-talking backstabber.
And she is NOT attractive, regardless the assertions by males who only think with their heads after-the-fact of being hornswoggled.

I agree.
And knowing when she does it would give it away.
There is no doubt this woman uses her sexuality to draw people towards her.
Notice the subtle change in her hair they made when she gave her speech,to tone her down a bit.
There is something inherently scary about palin that sensitive people pick up on immediately.
she simply is not what she appears to be.

I have been imploring TPM repeatedly to stop subjecting us to that repellent photograph. It is as objectionable as that loathesome profile shot of fat fuck Karl Rove that gets unearthed any time some new vile shit about him suddenly seems newsworthy.
Wait, let me take that back...NOTHING is as objectionable as the image of Karl Rove except the ooze-trail-leaving creature itself.

I can't stand it either. And honestly I'd bet $$$ that's why they're using it!
She gives herself away in that shot. And it really, really gets under your skin!
Don't we want that?

Uh, I couldn't agree more. There is something about this picture that makes me want to throw my computer across the room. I really can't stand her. If this election is lost because there are too many stupid women out there that vote for McCain(her) because they have the same reproductive organs, well that's just said.

In Saracudastan...
The McCain camp certainly did a great job vetting, didn't they? Her own adviser says she's facing "grave" ethical challenges; a judge tells her to back off because what she's doing is close to child abuse, and McCain chooses her anyway.
I no longer think this campaign should be about "Change." I think it should be about "Judgment, Honesty and Reliability."
Obama would be hands down winner in all three categories.

What does it say about the Republicans that they decided to nominate for VP someone who is in the midst of a very serious ethics investigation and could very well be found guilty? It proves one of two things: Either that they really don't care about legalities, or that they believe that they can manipulate the results to their satisfaction.
In either case, it's just wrong, and shows that they think very little of the American public. And we all darn well know that if Obama had done something similar, the Republicans would have been in a self-righteous uproar. Hypocrites.

she was vetted.
they knew all about her earmarks and her support for the bridge to nowhere and her abuse of office scandal.
that's why they led with the phony narrative about her being an anti-earmark anti-bridge to nowhere ethics crusader. they wouldn't have done all of that down-is-up bullshit and wouldn't be pushing it so hard down everyone's throats if all of that stuff wasn't a liability for her and mccain.

Palin may not be a DC politician, but she sure has all the coverup instincts of an old hand from the Bush administration.
An inocent person would encourage her staff to testify and have the whole thing behind her in a couple weeks.

She looks a lot like my 6th grage teacher, who use to make the girls cry in class, because of the way their mother may have "promiscuously" dressed them. The same married teacher who was later caught in the teacher's lounge with a married assistant principle.

I'd bet a lot of money that Palin then went after the ethics counselor for not being "a team player." Republicans don't have a lot of time for people who tell them things they don't want to hear. The only reason they put up with McCain all those years was that he's a war hero. Oh, uh, and a maverick.
But they have a long, distinguished history of cutting out people who try to talk them down from bad ideas.

I consider myself a Christian, so I am not someone in the electorate that comes unglued over religion when a politician says "God Bless America" or acknowledges their own faith, although I do believe in the separation of church and state. But, I do find it creepy when a U.S. Attorney, on U.S. Attorney letterhead ends his correspondence with "..... and Prayers."
Also, is this going to be another case of the coverup being worse than the underlying offense. It appears that Gov. Palin has the Bush Administration stonewalling tactics and contempt for the law attitude down pat.

I just read a Bloomberg article (see link below) about Palin's ethics problem. Sounds like 1) she loves kicking everyone else's butt except her own; and 2) she has real difficulty distinguishing the private and the public.

People have mentioned count down clocks for various things. The first time she holds a real press conference, the first time she does a speaking engagement without teleprompters, etc.
I would like to see a count down clock to the first truth that spills out of her lips.
I wonder how many years that one would have to be up?

GOP winning plan: Attack attack and more attack
Personal ethics issues? Scream how uncorrupt you are.
Queen of pork? Goad your opponent with lies about not accepting earmarks and be offended by swine remarks.
Traded in your first loyal spouse for a trophy wife 17 years younger than you? Say your opponent wants to teach kiddie sex.
News flash: This is dishonest and it has worked perfectly in US politics for going on decades for the GOP.
Why can't we get this?
Notice the press treatment of McCain? Quotes like "Win or lose, will he be able to look back on this one with pride?"
This type of coverage is nothing if not showing deference to what must be percieved by the writer as people who have no problem with lying and sleaze as long as their candidate wins.
If this writer thought McCain was lying and scoring cheap political points with scurrilous, ugly and superficial attacks why does his end analysis involve only what personal regret McCain might feel? Yes you will have a President who lied, personally debased an honorable opponent and disregarded the good of the country to get elected. The burning question for us is will HE be comfortable with it, right?
I know, Obama remains deeply confused and disheartened why the "honorable" John McCain would by some technical difficulties and momentary lapses in judgement in running his campaign say almost daily that Obama is unfit to lead in ever more trivial, personal and dishonest attacks.
I have news for you Obama, I don't care about your pride. I want the economic and foreign policies of my country to become things we can all be proud of. To hell with being proud of your civilities during the campaign.
If you don't start doing what's been proven to work soon, it'll be lost for another 4 years at least.
Start from the gutter up:
OK McCain, you say I'm unfit? You cheated on and left your first wife who'd waited faithfully for you while you were that prisoner of war you keep bragging about. Then you dumped her for a woman who hadn't suffered through a life altering car wreck like your first wife had, your new muse was in line to inherit millions in beer selling profits and was young enough to be your daughter - in my family we call that mean, cold and just plain creepy. That's not just me talking, that's what Nancy Reagan and just about every other female who sees these tawdry old wife/trophy wife trade ins happen thinks about your horny, selfish little "mid-life crisis."
That's what I'm talkin' about, Barack. Lose after unleashing stuff like that and for one I'd be very surprised, secondly the nation would beam with pride at you swinging the big bat. While your pride in your sense of civility may be just a little damaged, you'd get over it.

The Reader's Digest article about "Who's Best for Our Future" says "...it's not too much to say Nancy Reagan adored him for his gallantry and self-effacing manner." It doesn't bother to mention that she can't stand him for what he did to his first wife.
Do you doubt Reader's Digest in any way? They have a huge audience that will believe that what they've read is true.
I was surprised not to see a statement about his reluctance to talk about his POW experience which they DO mention in the most glowing way.

The Fox News Channel Documentary on Palin had the largest viewership in their history. 2.7 million koolaide drinking repuglicans who want someone "just like us". Someone who attended 5 colleges in 6 years before graduating. Where are her transcripts? I guess in the same place as 617 pages of John McCain's military record that they refuse to release.
This woman would have had a hard time getting any job outside of politics.
She is below average in intellect. Why is half our country supporting a presidential ticket that has two complete dunces on it? Because we live in Bell Curve Nation that gets info from Entertainment Tonight and Inside Edition and cares more about vapid celebrities than shutting down a party that shits all over the constitution.
This is indicative of the decline of our civilization. It is well underway.

Where's the account of the irresponsible behavior being promulgated by the Palin administration over all of this?
So McCain/Palin will cry over victimization and the waste of resources by Democrats doing some investigation in Alaska about what, if anything, that comes out of Palin's mouth is truthful.
But then their own "truth" squad stands to include the current Lt. Governor of Alaska?
Without Palin running the state, which she clearly has little time to do these days, and Lt. Gov. out on the Truth Squad gospel trail, who's taking the time to run Alaska?
Maybe this is reformist Alaskan politics, but where's the reasonable judgment about what's best for the constituency? Sure there are plenty of bureaucrats to do the daily work, but this wreaks of accountability failures on so many fronts.

This article is a prime example of just how far we have wavered from the definitions we espouse regularly.
Notice that now, ethics advisors are not concerned about internal morals or values, which ethics is--- used to be--- concerned with. Rather, it is the external consequences (wolves) which are now important. Ethics and behavior involving ethics is totally dependent upon whether or not you will get caught!
Accordingly, theft, murder, fraud, lying (you might want to look up the definition of lying) which is seen several time a day now is perfectly okay if it helps further your goal.
.... and "We the People" have fallen so far down the slope we are considering and promoting putting these folks in charge of our democracy, finances, and children's futures!
What a travesty and waste of a couple million lives of our relatives who have given their lives to get us this far just so we can flip them the bird and throw it all away... IMHO

This woman's parents were teachers in Wasilla. That means when she went to school she had these built-in authority figures on her side. She was a celebrity. She had clout. And likely her parents used that - to let her evade responsibility and to give her a leg up.
Given the way this whole family has gone after an ex-husband, and given the way Palin operates, promoting cronies and firing those who exercise their first amendment rights, seems to me she learned these same things growing up... from her parents and the way they must have operated in the Wasilla schools.
Her behavior seems to be a knee-jerk reaction, not something new she just started doing when she entered "public" life. Think about the kid whose parents had clout in high school. And who could reward or punish her peers - for their behavior toward her.
This is what we're seeing now. Someone who feels she is "above the law." Undoubtedly this goes way back... to childhood, schooling etc.

Should she become VP or maybe even President, who is going to be with her newborn special needs infant from 6AM in the morning until at least 6PM at night? Will her baby be awake when she gets home? How many hours a day will she be nurturing her child? Is her husband going to quit his job? Will he be traveling with his wife or is he going to become a full-time stay-at-home parent? Will her pregnant 18-year-old daughter and her "fiancee" move to Washington, D.C. and become full-time babysitters? Will nannies spend more time with her baby than she will? Which role will be her priority? VP or mother? Will she take her baby with her everywhere she goes? How is her special needs child going to get the special attention she'll need? Perhaps my idea of what the emotional needs of children are is an old-fashioned one, but it is my belief, based on raising three children myself, that there will be many, many instances when her "job" as VP or President will have to take precedence over being a mother. In this day and age, it may not seem fair to imply that a woman can't have a job and still be a good mother, but the reality is that any man or woman who has a newborn special needs child will confront the unfair but real choice of being at work or being there for their child. And anyone who believes in that "quality time" rationalization is full of crap! I don't care what anyone believes, the time you don't spend with your child is time that you and your child can never get back. You lose it and your child loses it. And that is undeniably the choice a working parent makes no matter how unfair it might seem. Parents and children only have one life, and the most valuable gift caring parents can give to their children is their time, which is a preciously and fleetingly finite commodity.
