Rove Emails Spotlight White House Role in U.S. Attorney Firing

The IG report released today provides new details on the White House's involvement in the firings of U.S. attorneys, especially the administration's involvement in the firing of U.S. Attorney David Iglesias.

Prior to Iglesias' removal on Dec. 7, 2006, New Mexico GOP Sen. Pete Domenici had already made multiple complaints to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales about Iglesias. In addition, Mickey Barnett, a former GOP New Mexico state senator and a prominent lawyer, had met in Washington with DOJ White House Liason Monica Goodling to discuss his problems with Iglesias' handling of voter fraud cases.

But emails disclosed in the recently released IG report between Barnett, Domenici and White House political operative Karl Rove reveal that the complaints against Iglesias went beyond talks with the Justice Department, and that the White House was aware and involved in the removal of Iglesias from his post as U.S. attorney.

According to today's report, on October 2, 2006, Barnett e-mailed Karl Rove an article from a local paper expressing frustrations with the apparently stalled investigation into bribery of Democratic state Sen. Manny Aragon (NM).

In the email, Barnett blamed Iglesias' office for delaying the case against the Democratic lawmaker, something he had spoken to Goodling, Rove and Domenici about before, according to conversations detailed in the report. Specifically, Barnett and Rove had previously discussed "kick[ing Iglesias]. . . upstairs" as a way to get rid of him.

The October 2 email from Barnett to Rove again mentions the possibility of a "promotion" for Iglesias, and their face to face discussion of it the weekend before at a Republican fundraiser in New Mexico.

From page 173 of the report:

Karl,
This article confirms what I mentioned Saturday. An FBI agent told me more than six months ago that their investigation was done and been turned over to the US Attorney a long time ago. He said agents were totally frustrated with some even trying to get out
of New Mexico. I can put you or anyone you designate with lawyers knowledgeable about the US Atty office - including lawyers in the office - that will show how poorly it is being run.
Scott Jennings was kind enough to set up an appointment at the Justice Department several months ago where Pat Rogers and I laid all this out. I hope Justice can now be persuaded to send out some cracker jack prosecutor and perhaps promote Iglesias to a Justice department position.
We still await the results of the task force Iglesias convened about this time two years ago on the clear Acorn fraudulent voter registrations. We were told it would look to [sic] "political" to indict anyone that close to the election. Then we never heard anything else
.

Just a few weeks after Barnett's email, Domenici's chief of staff Steve Bell emailed Rove on Nov. 7, 2006, the day of mid-term Congressional elections complaining about ballot problems in a New Mexico precinct. Bell closed the email with the statement, "We worry about the USA here."

Rove responded just 32 minutes later stating, "I'd have the Senator call the Attorney General about this."

Exactly one month later, Iglesias was fired.

and still the pig rove runs free....shame on you Congress for not putting that little piggy away!

If Rove were indicted today, Bush could pardon him.

If he is indicted next year, Rove may actually stand trial.

this was an attempt by rove and the white house to surpress and manipulate voting in this country.

these fired AGs refused to bring cases against innocent people for vote fraud in a broader attempt at intimidating voters who would then be afraid they would be the next person charged.

emails containing cagging lists of voters are part of the proof.

a felony on a grand scale protected up till now by the justice dept.
and i wouldnt hold my breath we get much results unless Obama wins and decides to pursue this further.

Now that there is an independent prosecutor assigned to this abuse of power, perhaps we will find out just what Karl did.

She's not independent! She is in the DOJ, therefore reporting to Mukasey.

We will NEVER know everything KR has done to execute the PNAC agenda from the White House or it's sphere of influence.
We are already aware of scads of pernicious machinations that Congress has chosen to ignore. We know that Obama won't spend any effort here, either. He will not be bringing anyone to account unless "egregious" acts are revealed.
After all, it will only take a generation or two to undo most of the damage. (We can't bring back any of those lives tossed away for the pursuit of the installation of the Permanent Republican Majority and the realization of it's covert schemes, but,...in time everybody will put it all out of their minds. Big media is trying to help us not to think about it already by keeping those creepy images of war off the air...)
No big deal.
No egregious big deal, anyhow.

I don't know why you assume an Obama administration won't prosecute these crimes. The key thing is for Obama himself to stay out- he needs a highly respected AG who has a record of applying the law in a non-partisan manner. If it isn't a witch hunt, it shouldn't have to look like one.

What a joke. It is not going to be feasible to prosecute these after Bush has left, because it will compete with other more pressing issues, such as the security of Pakistan's nukes, the disaster in Afghanistan, the occupation of Iraq, the bank crisis, natural disasters...
And any probe that involves Repub miscreasnts will be called a witch hunt, and will be considered such by half the population, no matter how scrupulously it is conducted. This is especially true if their crimes become precedent for U.S. gov't practice, as they will if the Admin exits unchallenged by the proper instrument for redress.
No, the proper time to conduct this kind of inquiry is NOW. But the Democrats do not have the political courage to do it.

An Obama administration will not seek charges unless the independent prosecutor advises charges. In which case it will be handled by the DOJ, and not The White House - as it should be.

I don't have much faith that Mukasey would appoint a true independent, but I think the course described above is the correct one.

With the problems facing our nation, it would be a waste of energy to have our President squander his energies on this.

the MAIN reason the GOP establishment would go so far to get iglesias or his replaement to rush Dem politician indictments and ficticious voter fraud BS was to effect the elections and the main component for blowing up those cases that iglesias was working on was the giant NM talk radio station KKOB and its RW local talkers who were already filling the airwaves with indignation and outrage at the 'massive' dem corruption and all the 'illegal immigrants' who were faking ID to vote dem. it was part of a national push but NM was one of those swing states that has already had problems with stolen votes.

we wouldn't be in this bush mess withut the talk radio monopoly to enable the whole GOP corruption and incompetence.

Speaking of Rove's voter suppression, one of his accomplices in the 2004 stolen election - the one who stole Ohio's votes - Mike Connell, is refusing to respond to a subpoena.

Connell is also the guy who runs the gwb43.com and other assorted illegal domains that Rove and White House staff used to circumvent their government email accounts.

I'm just repeating what Obama has said himself.

I don't get this refusing to show when subpoenaed? People used to sweat bullets at the sign of being subpoenaed. Now, it's like an invitation to RSVP--"Regrets, I will not be there."

user-pic

Don't kid yourself about that "special prosecutor" crap. She's at Justice where Mukasey can control her. If Mukasey was seriously trying to get to the bottom of this scandal of corruption he would have gotten a special prosecutor from outside of the Justice department, one that was free to investigate wherever it lead them.

Rove/Bush know that even if Obama appoints a new AG that will investigate this event that all the USAs will then be dems appointed and they can claim "it's a witch hunt...it's a witch hunt."

These crooks of Bush hide behind the law and their positions to get away with corrupting our elections and these biased prosecutions (Seigleman etc). We really don't need any more proof... we know they're guilty...they are just gumming it to death till they can get away.

Expecting McCain/Palin to be any different is pure stupidity. Republicans have gotten in the habit of coning everybody with their self righteous hypocrisy. We're done with 'em and their little media trolls too. By hook or by crook the republican era is coming to an end.

The coming Obama administration will go after the gwb43 wrong doers - it will be saavy, & politically elegant by making certain the investigation is independent & non partisan.( Jane Harmon for example is going to have some "explaining to do" ). Keep your eye on USA John Durham -currently investigating the CIA 's torture tape being released to the public.
John Durham will make an excellent special prosecutor -he is reputed to be on the Obama short list for this very important position.
"You want the truth -you can't handle the truth !" Oh yes we do want the truth , and we can handle the truth -and we also want and can handle justice - I for one have full faith & confidence in the coming Obama administration to restore our Constitution & Rule of Law..
I repeat keep your eye on John Durham ,once his current investigative work goes public.
And once more I would recommend Mr Iglesias 's book "Injustice " .

Can't say why, but somehow I believe that Rove will ultimately fall prey to the karma/boomerang thing, and what payback that would be! Maybe not necessarily as a result of prosecution or being called to account for his criminality; maybe just through some sort of misfortune. There's little in the way of misfortune I wouldn't wish on that loathsome fuck.

The thing from this bit that jumps off the page to me is the way they were proposing to handle someone they were claiming was not competent -- promote him! That is more than a bit telling about the Bush administration, isn't it.

user-pic

Anyone who genuinely believes that Democrats are going to let Rove off the hook when Obama moves into the White House is drinking red kool-aid. There is no political downside to prosecuting a "non-elected" official as unpopular as Karl Rove. I guarantee you that people like Mr. Rove, Mr. Libby, Mr. Gonzales, Mr. Rumsfeld, Ms. Rice, Ms. Miers, Mr. Bolton, Ms. Goodling and Mr. Sampson will be receiving committe and or grand jury subpeonas. The Bush administration's delay game is meant to help McCain win the presidential election. When Obama wins, Bush and Cheney will be unable to prevent a full and thorough investigation of the soldiers who facilitated and or executed their crimes.

user-pic

Obama is a realistic politician, not Batman. He has said (often) he will not prosecute these weasels.
And let's face it, it ain't like he's not going to have his hands full as it is.
He will be stepping into the aftermath of Cheney and the gang. That road is littered with monolithic death and destruction and will be supported by an empty treasury.
The nation is snared in the unprecedented freefall that was an inevitable outcome for this feckless enterprise that nobody in the halls of power could rein in.
The next administration will be the HASMAT crew. I suspect Obama sees cleaning up the mess as a fulltime job that puts the perps on the back burners. There's just too much else to do and even that is too much.
Still, I believe in karma, too. Unfortunately, that doesn't mean I will always get to see it's endgame.

I agree, but, hell, turn up the heat on the back burners!

ACORN is not, and never has...engaged in any crime or vote fraud.

NOTICE THE NEOCON game: AUDACIOUS AND OUTRAGEOUS ATTACKS ON people with integrity (their strength) while the little pricks (neocons, GOP nazi trash) break every rule in the book, and hide behind gutless partisan scum who "loan out their surface layer of credibility" (BOB MUELLER'S FBI HQ) to create a "new bogus reality" that can...sometimes...include...

...TARGETING THOMAS S. BEAN AS A TERRORIST, while ignoring BEAN'S BEST EFFORTS TO PREVENT THE RADICAL RIGHT WING FROM BLOWING UP THE CHILDREN AT THE MURRAY BUILDING USING THE CANISTOTA, SD, DETENATORS seen and reported by Sioux Falls, SD, electronic engineer, ALLAN DOERING?

That doesn't mean there were laws broken, or anything untoward happened: the Bushit criminal enterprise is well known for PROMOTING those who've proven their incompetence. They DISCUSSED promoting Iglesias, but in the end didn't do that.

I do admit, at the same time, that it is suspicious that they didn't award Iglesias a Medal of Freedom, which is their standard affirmation of incompetence. And that, instead, they fired him, which does tend to indicate that he was competent.

Why? is Pelosi,Hoyer, and Reid not steped up to the plate and started the process to see Rove(TURD BLOSSOM) in a Orange jumps suit WITH legg IRONS? the ANS. is the same as it is for LIE-berman NO GUTS. The CORPORATE CONTROLED MEDIA has Rove(TURD BLOSSOM) on there pay role. That tells ME alot.

Ralph Nader for Attorney General! If that doesn't scare the greedy, uncaring CEOs nothing will.
