Trooper-Gate Trooper Breaks Silence

CNN caught up earlier today with Alaska State Trooper Mike Wooten, the former brother-in-law of Sarah Palin, who is at the center of Trooper-Gate.

Wooten doesn't appear to have spoken publicly since his name became the focus of the investigation involving the firing of Alaska Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan, who claimed he was terminated by Palin after he refused to fire Wooten.

Wooten has been embroiled in a bitter dispute with the Palin family since a messy 2005 divorce from Palin's sister Molly McCann. In 2005, complaints were filed against Wooten to the state troopers which resulted in an internal investigation of Wooten. Thirteen charges were investigated and four were ultimately found to have merit. Those included charges that he tasered his 11 year-old stepson, shot a moose out of season, drove drunk in his trooper car and threatened to "put a bullet in [the] f***ing brain" of Palin's father.

Wooten received a 10-day suspension from the force as a result of the findings, which was shortened to 5 days after advocacy from the troopers union.

Yesterday, the troopers union filed an ethics complaint against Palin for improperly accessing Wooten's personnel record. In her defense Palin states that she received information on Wooten from the divorce proceedings, which Wooten had made public by signing a waiver.

Palin's claim that Wooten made his records public is not true. The waiver of confidentiality that he signed made the records available for the divorce court proceedings and was limited "to said attorneys."

One can clearly recognize the apparent abuse of power and interference by Governor Palin with a review process designed to keep Alaska State Troopers accountable. One that when invoked, found substance to several of the complaints, and was adjudicated with a later adjusted suspension. A clearly defined, structured process involving interested parties, the result of which clearly did not please Governor Palin's aggrieved sister and others in her family.

Trooper Wooten was held accountable for his actions following an investigation into the complaints lodged against him. It's time for the Governor to face the complaint lodged against her, cooperate with the inquiry, and deal with the consequences of her actions.

How could any 'rule of law' Republican see this situation from any other perspective?

Oh, that's right: the 'rule of law' applies only to others. I get it now. What a perfectly fit prospective running mate for Senator ' 'we do no torture' McCain. Ah, but we do…

No doubt the Palin interference was a very personal thing, but she should have left it to the review board. And, after all, the Palin sister chose this goof for a husband. In these matters, this sort of problem often develops. Plenty of free complaints from family members on both sides. However, in any of the family court cases we have had including the very hate-filled ones like this, I have never seen any official interfere in the livelihood of an ex-brother-in-law. In fact, that would even hurt the children of the marriage. All these Palin complaints seem far from being objective even in the light of police groups that protect their own.

YET ANOTHER REASON it is completely unacceptable that the coward Palin would retreat away from the press with barely two months until the election, and she is a virtual unknown.

No amount of briefing books are going to change this outcome. It is unacceptable that she feels free to ignore the press for WEEK.

tick tock tick tock

WHERE IS SARAH PALIN?

She's out there still trash talking Barack.

She is fleeing north.

Where's that big ol' bad pit bull?

This could turn out to be a delay of the game like Peter Paul's suit/depo of the clintons was put off till after the election by a clinton appointed judge...

Keep tuned in the best is yet to come!!

The bastard killed a moose illegally? UNLEASH THE HOUNDS!!!

FWIW, as someone who grew up in Michigan, in a household with an avid hunter, you don't want to go down this road. Hunting season is a distinctly and legally defined period of time. As an officer of the law, a State Trooper would know the parameters of that period and would be tasked with enforcing it, particularly in a State like Alaska. It only makes one seem like "an out of touch coastal elite" to make light of how serious hunting regulations and infractions are taken. That kind of attitude is offensive to hunters and conservationists alike.

That's not to say that this doesn't seem to pale in* comparison to the Governor's actions; on the contrary, all of this hinges on State officials acting improperly, but her alleged illegal acts do not excuse his alleged illegal acts and vice versa. As someone else noted here, the spotlight should be on Palin's treatment of Monegan. That conduct is inexcusable regardless of whether or not Wooten ends up being a dirtbag.

*(pale in... did you see how I did that?)

Aren't Republicans making fun of the press for bringing up Palin's citation for fishing without a license? Sounds like a similar offense.

I agree with you. It looks like she might have had a public safety reason to want his firing. The piece leaves me thinking she was doing the right thing and this guy is protected by a really strong union.

Well see.

Let's see what Hillary can do with her.

I agree with you ondioline: breaking the law, any law, is serious business -- admittedly there are different degrees of seriousness depending on the law and its purpose. But a law enforcement officer breaking the law, any law, is another matter altogether and is not to be tolerated. So, good -- Wooten was caught and disciplined for his illegal shoot. Was his punishment sufficient? Well, consider this (as I'm sure his superiors did): According to at least one account in my online reading from AK sources, Wooten's wife DID have the proper permit for the moose cow kill, and she DID accompany him on the hunt. I'm not a hunter and I have no idea whether or not there was some other restriction (beyond permit) making Wooten's action unlawful, but this little fact (if true) does seem to offer some degree of mitigation.

From what we've seen of Palin — bullying, abuse of power, disdain for the Constitution — her joke at the convention was just a few words off. 'What's the difference between Sarah Palin and Dick Cheney? Lipstick."

What's the difference between Rudy Giuliani and Sarah Palin?

Lipsti... Oh, wait.

Wooten isn't the story here, and if he is, Palin is winning the argument. He's probably a sonuvabitch afterall. The central issue is Monegan and why he was fired.

Wooten probably thinks he's sticking it to Palin here, but he's helping her.

I agree, Wooten is no hero.

Monegan is the one that was the real victim.

I agree, Wooten is no hero.

Monegan is the one that was the real victim.

Trooper Wooten sounds like a bad cop. (Tasering a child? What could the boy have possibly done to warrant it?) Wooten got a slap on the wrist, when he should have been booted off the force.

That said, Governor Palin did NOT have the right nor the authority to have Wooten fired. Firing Monegan when she didn't get her way only proves how dangerous it would be to put this vindictive woman anywhere near the power of the Presidency.

What would happen if she became POTUS and some country pissed her off?

Umm, the kid asked for it?

No, seriously, the kid asked to be tased. (It was on the test setting and he was uninjured, apparently.)

user-pic

On the tasering business, both sides seem to agree that the Trooper wasn't punishing his son. The kid was apparently curious about the effects asked to be tasered. The trooper tasered his son on the lowest setting as a demonstration. That doesn't excuse the Trooper. He should never have done it, but it is incorrect to jump to the conclusion that he tasered his son out of anger or to punish the boy.

I agree that the supervisor is Palin's real victim

user-pic

So he tasered a kid? So? ALL cops these days are in a tasering frenzy. It sounds like he is just some normal, fascist cop doing the Lord's, er, I mean, the GOP's work.

Taser on dude!

Fact1: It was his step-son I heard and he was asking him to do it. Sounds stupid, but I grew up in the south and you'd be surprised how many good ole boys do similar stupid stunts just to know what it feels like.

Fact2: There are rules for failing to follow procedures in every governmental office in the US, especially Law Enforcement. If his actions were in violation of policy, disciplinary actions would address the problem and corrective actions taken. Sounds as if Wooten received punishment for his actions.

What really at the heart of this family feud is Palin isn't satisfied with the punishment given; it was too light in her opinion.

Ex post facto or retroactive law is a law that retroactively changes the legal consequences of acts committed or the legal status of facts and relationships that existed prior to the enactment of the law.

If I were a betting person, I'd bet Palin was attempting to retroactively influence the disciplinary actions taken by the Alaska Public Safety Commission. Normally, the punishment should fit the crime, but Palin seems to be vindictive and wanted to make Wooten suffer far more that his wrongful actions dictate; its' become personal in my opinion.

I would question this woman's sanity. And I'm not too comfortable with her being one heartbeat way from the Oval Office and the Button.

i agree tasers are bad for ANYONE. cause they kill people.

but, thi s incident was the boy requesting to be tasered to see how it felt.

of course he is ajerk to do it, but keep it in perspective.

What excellent distractions the Republicans give us. With a family like the Palins, nobody needs Jerry Springer reruns.
Let's just stay focused on the war, the failure to capture bin Laden, the economy, the mortgage fiasco (caused by the administrations's failure to regulate banking), the failure to do anything about global warming, the failure to help New Orleans, the loss of civil liberties, the use of torture as official government policy (and on and on).

Be careful how fast and high you rise... pride comes before he fall. Palin has pride and ego so she when in with this full gear. I think she didn't stop to think. If the bottom falls out she is through forever. Expect a serious battle.

And of course, no word from the Palin camp. She refuses to make statements or give interviews, but of course, she is pro-abortion, pro NRA, and a good church going woman. We should lay off, right? Wrong!

Make her speak! That is questionable business if she doesnt!

Geez....the more one hears about this family, the more they appear to be good candidates, not for President or Veep, but for the Jerry Springer Show.

soap operas haven't had this good a storyline in the last several years....

Back to the matter at hand....we need to make sure the Anchorage Daily News gets more visibility around here (here--the lower 48), so that the AP and the Conservative Press isn't permitted to set the narrative for this, and shift focus away from Palin and Monegan

And of course, no word from the Palin camp. She refuses to make statements or give interviews, but of course, she is pro-abortion, pro NRA, and a good church going woman. We should lay off, right? Wrong!

Barleymash:

Didn't any of the 5 colleges she attended teach the Constitution? Or did the Alaskan Independence Party abolish that class?

Joe

The guy may be a complete jerk, and perhaps should not be a cop, but you do have to feel a little bit sorry for him in this situation. Now his actions, his personal life (4 divorces and the reasons for them), and anything else he has ever done good, bad or indifferent, is all going to put on the table for everyone to see.

There is more to this story, then what is reaching the surface.
Palin's lawyers are trying to stall this investigation-
what does that tell us?

user-pic

The McCain handlers know that right now, any statement Palin would make would hurt the campaign, especially with the way the MSM is handling her and her family generally.
It seems to be a common Right Wing tactic: Control the Story so as to control the Message. they know they're peddling poison, so they less we know the better for them.

Caveat Emptor---let the buyer beware

Five colleges, eh? Well, I went thru 5 myself, but I could only transfer 60 lower level credit hours, max. That meant my degree was awarded at the college I earned the rest of the 60 credit hours, which took two years to complete. From what I've read, she was dancing around those 5 colleges the entire time. I wonder how she got around the 60 lower level credit hour transfer max?

Ironic that "Palin" and "Plame" are almost anagrams. Cause with Palin, you'll see a lot more "Valerie Plame" like incidents: personal vendettas for political reasons.

Tase me, Dad!

McCain has cancer,....and Palin is next in line.
What real trust can be formed with the american public if she does not give full disclosure of her career and viewpoints in extensive interviews.

Wake up big media!

What do we really know about her judgement in foreign policy. She should be vetted in all aspects,....we want her opinions on the middle east, palestine, israel, russia, nato, afghanistan, al quaeda, nato,UN, europe, who she considers america's greatest allies, what does she know about history....what does she think about green energy relative to carbon energy,....everything.

In all honesty, this is a sleight of hand trick by the far right conservatives to get their evangelist in the WH under the someone who looks like a "sexy smart librarian",....you know someone who you would want to read a book to you at night to make you feel very safe.

Can the real Democratic surrogates, please stand up, and hammer this one home. We've already made a giant step backwards with Bush because enough people thought he still drank beer, but he doesn't. And Palin won't read us a bedtime story. We want information!

Wake up! This is Karl Rove's fast one on the american public to distract us,....so in the meantime Obama and Biden can continue on the real issues.

All of us backing Obama need to send a memo directly to their communications directors: start Palin ads NOW! Since she will not do interviews, she needs to be DEFINED by her record as dishonest, incompetent and ultra-right-wing before the GOP beats them to the punch AGAIN. DEFINE HER, no one KNOWS HER! How about starting with the lies in her convention speach? Where are you, Obama??? Falling for the kids-glove feminst thing, r u?

Nicely done!

Although I have to say that comparing Palin to Cheney is like comparing OJ Simpson to Professor Moriarty.

This thing reminds me of the Bobbit trial. It's pretty hard to find someone to fight for. Both sides seem pretty disgusting.

Did any of you actually watch this video? The guy's been married four times, reprimanded several times, and admitted to Tasering his 11-year old kid!

Palin will turn this investigation completely to her advantage by saying she was only trying to protect her family and the public from this guy. Even if she abused her office, in the mind of the public I think it will work. Meanwhile, better for us all to focus on McCain and not obsess on this one.

This guy seems to be an asshole. But when is Palin going to give an interview?

The deal with the illegal moose kill is this one - His wife at the time (Palin's sister) won a license to hunt a female moose, but isn't a hunter. Basically she was out on a boat with Wooten and her father (at least) and they spotted a female moose from the boat they were in, and when the sister wasn't going to take the shot, Wooten took the gun and shot the moose.

I'm sure Palin enjoyed moose burgers that night, and that is wasn't an issue until the divorce and child custody hearing.

And regarding the tasering of the kid, as has been mentioned, the kid, his step-son wanted to proove how tough he was to his older cousins (Bristol was there) and asked to be tased. The father put it on the lowest "test" setting and touched the kids arm with it, it left a welt, but the kid didn't have any issue. Was it stupid? Sure it was, but it's not something to demonize him over like the Palins are trying. It wasn't out of malice and it wasn't as punishment.

Fact1: It was his step-son I heard and he was asking him to do it. Sounds stupid, but I grew up in the south and you'd be surprised how many good ole boys do similar stupid stunts just to know what it feels like.

I am not willing to cut the administrator any breaks yet either, but that would depend on whether it was part of his job to ensure that citizen complaints against troopers are properly and aggressively investigated, and that appropriate penalities are imposed.

This whole thing has a bad look to it in terms of a light investigation, and light penalty -- cops protecting cops. I know the official reasons given for his dismissal are different, but set those aside for a moment -- was it part of his job to ensure that citizen complaints are timely and aggressively investigated, and that appropriate penalities are imposed if the investigation finds improper action? If that is part of his job -- then the next question is did he do his job?

In this case, I have not heard too many arguments that 5 days suspension is an appropriate punishement. The state trooper in my state that I ran it by said anyone caught drinking beer in a patrol care here would be fired -- forget the rest of the stuff. Here's the thing that kind of gets me though -- this is the level of investigation undertaken, and punishment given, when the acts in question are against the governor's sister and family. What the heck investigation would go, and punishment given, if if the acts were against john and jane citizen without any political clout whatsoever?

user-pic

He denies drinking in the patrol car.

user-pic

Ask your trooper friend what would happen if allegations of drinking in a patrol car were brought forward months or years after the fact by people connected to the opposing side of a custody proceeding.

user-pic
. The state trooper in my state that I ran it by said anyone caught drinking beer in a patrol care here would be fired -- forget the rest of the stuff. H

You know, my experience in Dallas is that you can't fire a bad cop no matter how bad the cop is.

They get hearings, appeals, there is a union...

Hussein: You are correct. It is difficult to fire a bad cop. That is due, in large part, because (a) people are often scared to come forward, and (b) cops cover for other cops in lots of ways. One big one being that they don't investigate claims aggressively -- exhibit a that cop Drew Peterson in Illinois.

The claim, as I understand it, was made that Wooten regularly drank beer while on patrol. Wooten was found, by the internal investigation, to have been drinking in the patrol car at least once, and that was part of findings that ultimately lead to the 5 day suspension penalty. Monegan (who was appointed by Palin) was unwilling to take any more action.

The reason this story is not growing beyond internet message boards like this one is that most people after reading about what Wooten did and said are going to be asking questions about why is he still a cop and why was Monegan unwilling to take action when pretty much all of us would say -- fire him. Good grief, per the Washington Post, the conclusion of the police investigator was; "The record clearly indicates a serious and concentrated pattern of unacceptable and at times, illegal activity occurring over a lengthy period, which establishes a course of conduct totally at odds with the ethics of our profession." (Penalty imposed: 5 days suspension). I am sure the citizens of Alaska are glad to know that investigations of citizen complaints will be taken so very seriously.

Hey folks . . . stay on message . . . Wooten isn't the key subject . . . personal use of administrative power to fire Monegan is on the hot seat. From what I read, Palin is guilty . . . . buuut if you're a Republican laws don't apply!
