DOJ, Bucking White House, Won't Intervene in Ohio Voting Case
Looks like the most high-profile of the various Republican voter-suppression schemes is faring no better than many of the others.
The New York Times reports that the Department of Justice will not require Ohio's Democratic secretary of state, Jennifer Brunner, to provide local election officials with lists of new voters who have mismatches in their registration information.
Late last week, in an unusual intervention, the White House had passed on a request by Republican House leader John Boehner that DOJ take action on the issue -- triggering outrage from voting-rights groups. But according to the Times:
The Justice Department has been in contact with Ohio election officials since early October and this week its lawyers determined they would not pursue litigation before the election, according to the sources familiar with the discussions.
The state Republican party had sued to force Brunner to hand over the information. Voting-rights advocates feared that it could allow the Republicans to launch a slew of voter challenges at the polls, and the Supreme Court rejected the GOP bid earlier this month.
Still, the Ohio Republicans are trying to make maximum political hay out of the dispute. They released a radio ad earlier this week accusing Brunner of "concealing evidence."

In a nation transitioning to tyranny from Constitutional government, the most formidable adversary of the would-be tyrant is generally the Judicial Branch.
It appears Mukasey has no respect for Congress or the American people, but he isn't willing to defy the Supreme Court just yet.

Score this one for the good guys! This Sec't of State is a hero to the voters of Ohio and certainly is helping erase the mess of 2004. Go Buckeyes and thanks Jennifer!

We must protect our democracy by making sure that terrorists are not allowed to vote!

It would have stank too bad.
Don't worry though. When it is this "close", it is within Diebold range.

DOJ must have got ear to the word on the street,,,, don't mess with Jennifer Brunner,,, nor Ted Strickland either. Diebold range will be limited and/or done in by Brunner's high disdain for the system,,, she wants all of them out of the state.

A couple things I don't understand...
1. Why isn't the government itself in charge of registering voters? The IRS doesn't send volunteers to ask citizens to register to pay taxes, right? If the govt. WANTED more voters, we'd HAVE more voters. The govt. usually gets whatever it wants... why not voters?
2. If any modern self-service gas pump can register and record a transaction accurately, AND give me a printed paper receipt, why can't a voting machine? Even Republicans (Diebold) can make bank machines that are fairly reliable... they can count MONEY, why so hard for them to count VOTES?
3. Most puzzling, why would anyone even CONSIDER voting for John McCain?
Read this then get back to me:

So since when does The Little Prince go "suggesting" things? And wouldn't a "suggestion" from the President be pretty much a request that it get done? Why wouldn't he just order Mukasey to investigate? Is Shrub losing his game?
