Iglesias: "I'm Astounded" By DOJ's ACORN Probe
David Iglesias says he's shocked by the news, leaked today to the Associated Press, that the FBI is pursuing a voter-fraud investigation into ACORN just weeks before the election.
"I'm astounded that this issue is being trotted out again," Iglesias told TPMmuckraker. "Based on what I saw in 2004 and 2006, it's a scare tactic." In 2006, Iglesias was fired as U.S. attorney thanks partly to his reluctance to pursue voter-fraud cases as aggressively as DOJ wanted -- one of several U.S. attorneys fired for inappropriate political reasons, according to a recently released report by DOJ's Office of the Inspector General.
Iglesias, who has been the most outspoken of the fired U.S. attorneys, went on to say that the FBI's investigation seemed designed to inappropriately create a "boogeyman" out of voter fraud.
And he added that it "stands to reason" that the investigation was launched in response to GOP complaints. In recent weeks, national Republican figures -- including John McCain at last night's debate -- have sought to make an issue out of ACORN's voter-registration activities.
As we noted earlier, last year, Sen. Dianne Feinstein publicly highlighted changes made to DOJ's election crimes manual, which lowered the bar for voter-fraud prosecutions, and made it easier to bring vote-fraud cases close to the election.
Speaking today to TPMmuckraker, Iglesias called such changes "extremely problematic."
The way in which the news was revealed today -- Associated Press sourced its report to two "senior law enforcement officials" who "spoke on condition of anonymity because Justice Department regulations forbid discussing ongoing investigations particularly so close to an election" -- is also raising eyebrows.
Both Iglesias and Bud Cummins -- another of the U.S. attorneys who, according to the IG report, was also fired for political reasons -- told TPMmuckraker that DOJ guidelines do allow US attorneys to speak publicly about an investigation, even before bringing an indictment, if it's to allay public concern over an issue.
But that certainly wouldn't cover anonymous leaks. "If you can't say it with your name on it, it's fair to say you should not be saying it," Cummins told TPMmuckraker.
Earlier this afternoon, House Judiciary Chair John Conyers (D-MI) released a letter he sent to Attorney General Michael Mukasey and FBI director Robert Mueller, which connected today's news to the U.S. attorney firings, and to recent GOP efforts to stoke fears over voter fraud.

Here's the real voter registration fraud: States failing to register voters, as required by federal law, as disability, military recruitment, and food stamp, wic and medicaid offices:
http://projectvote.org/index.php?id=43
Quote: "An equally important but less well-known provision of the NVRA is the requirement that states offer voter registration opportunities to clients and applicants of public assistance programs. Programs covered by the NVRA include Food Stamps, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) and Medicaid. Public assistance offices are in a unique position to increase voter registration rates among low-income citizens, furthering the intent of the NVRA to increase registration among populations underrepresented on the voter registration rolls.
Thirteen years after the NVRA went into affect, only a handful of states are consistently complying with the requirement to offer voter registration services to clients and applicants of public assistance programs. In fact, voter registration applications from public assistance agencies has declined by 79 percent between 1995-1996 and 2005-2006. The NVRA Implementation Project was created to address this problem.
The Project is a joint effort by Project Vote, a leading nonpartisan, nonprofit provider of voter engagement services and Demos, a national voting rights and election reform policy organization. The Project assists states, social service agencies, and election officials with implementation of public agency registration. In addition to technical assistance, the Project documents noncompliance and, when necessary, initiates litigation to enforce the NVRA."
Where's the press coverage on this? One memo on that page estimates that about 2 million low income registrations should have been filed, had the law been followed!
PS (How do I do the cool block quote thing? It didn't work to use "[blockquote]".)

This is a dishonorable & despicable . Its too bad we don't have McCain 2000 here to tell Tucker Eskew & McCain 2008 to cease & desist this suborning of our electoral system .

Kudos to TPM for getting the first interview with David Iglesias anywhere on the subject of the US Justice Department's ongoing efforts to suppress the vote and increase racial tensions for the political benefit of Republicans.
Nobody else seems willing to connect the dots.

Voting fraud, one vote at a time, makes no sense. It couldn't work. The necessary resources, costs, scheming, and secrecy would prohibit an effective manipulation. Certainly they couldn't gather the hundreds of thousands of votes nationally to effectively change the outcome.
Furthermore, all the polls have Obama significantly ahead. Why cheat if you're holding aces?
So what's up?
Do the Republicans intend to contest a lost election? Do they want to create an ungovernable condition for an Obama administration? Do they foresee civil turmoil as a result of economic distress? Even if Obama wins convincingly, Bush occupies the WH until January. Is it only spite or do they have something more sinister up their sleeve?

I would think that, with the GOP trying to tie Obama to ACORN, what's up is that they are trying to disgust uninformed people so much, that if they had any idea of voting for Obama, they won't now because ACORN has been "accused" of committing major election fraud and Obama has "ties" to ACORN. They want to "tighten" the polls enough that people will think nothing when the GOP goes in and steals votes and "wins" the election.

Yet, how much more efficient to change thousands, even hundreds of thousands of votes, when one's cronies and fellow travelers have designed and programmed the very machines that purport to record and transmit the votes? Acorn is, indeed, in the Stone Ages and needs to get with our Hi-Tech times.

David Iglesias is that figure, I think, we on the left pine for; the principled, honorable Republican. It's why so many of us fell for John McCain and to a lesser degree, Arlen Spector and Lincoln Chaffey. They were (or seemed like) good people.
Now, Iglesias may end up being the second most important man in America. He may be the voice of reason that we have to show to our in-laws and coworkers saying, "See? This is what I was talking about."
That said, conservatives, as of late, seem perfectly content shooting the messenger.

Total agreement about the estimable, honorable, patriotic, conservative Iglesias hobobituary.
So I have this "work across the aisle" idea for Obama, and a way to ensure the DoJ gets cleansed from top to bottom: Maybe he should name Iglesias as his Attorney General? I daresay that, at this point, you could probably find no one more dedicated to eradicating partisan practices within that organization -- and the law is not left-wing or right-wing when executed in a non-partisan fashion: It's just the law.
Heck that president who served 4 terms in the Illinois Senate and only completed one term in the US Congress named his top opponents to his darned cabinet after taking office. You remember that "inexperienced" president? Abraham Lincoln?
I'm just sayin... .

Its interesting and encouraging that other conservatives are abandoning the party of tURDBLOSSOM -and returning to the best practices exemplified by Teddy Rooesevelt-(such as Christopher Buckeley jumping ship ) . More encouraging is that when Mr Iglesias was being interviewed by Terry Gross recently on "Fresh Air " he stated that he was now no longer a member of the GOP -but a member of the "Rule of Law "party .
If you all have not read Mr Iglesias 's book - its a very good rundown of the DOJ scandal -its called "In Justice " -its a nice book end to Jane Mayers "Darkside" .
Hope Mr Iglesias runs for office again someday -"Rule of lAW " party indeed,,,

It is clearly obvious that the orchestrated politicalization of the entire Department of Justice by the Bush Administration, such as the U.S. Attorney firings and within the Civil Rights Division, for the purpose of controlling the outcome of all future elections, was the vehicle for Karl Rove's dream and scheme for a "permanent Republican majority."

Help me out here. Is there ANY way to fight back effectively against this very clear and present danger of a political attack by the DOJ and its FBI?
October 17, 2008 11:58 AM | Reply | Permalink
Is there any way to fight back? Yes, indeed, PlanMeister. There is.
We have to walk with, carry, drive or push every last possible registered warm body that would dimple the chad for Obama down to the polling places and be prepared to stand in pouring rain or hip deep in Katrina-like floodwaters for 10 hours to ensure every last non-disenfrachised vote gets cast.
This ongoing Republican plan to steal elections allegedly disenfranchised as many as 1.1 million votes in the 04 election (according to a just published Rolling Stone investigation co-authored by Robert Kennedy Jr.) -- and that is out of a total of 121,069,054 votes. But those votes all came from just a couple of swing states (Ohio included), which likely stole that election.
We have to ensure that if it was ever possible for an un-seen landslide to occur, it must occur on November 4 to bury the effects of these undemocratic, un-American Republican tactics.
After all, when Right-Wing nutbags like Michele Bachman (R-MN) talk about left-wingers being un-American, or McSlime talks about ACORN threatening the very fabric of our republic, they are guilty of psychological "projection".

The entire ACORN bullcrap that has been going on for years is built on a mountain of lies, both actual and by omission.
1. The only fraud committed was against ACORN by one of its employees.
2. ACORN is required BY LAW to turn in ALL registration forms even if they are obvious fakes, it's the SoS job to verify the registrations.
3. ACORN actually goes an extra step. They attempt to contact every registrant to verify the registration. Those they verify goes in one pile, the ones they can't contact by phone goes in a second pile and, finally, those which are obvious fakes and suspicious one go in a third pile. The SoS are aware of this as those 3 packets are given to them with explanations attached.

We are wading in dangerous waters when the FBI and the Attorney General of the US are engaging in an attempt to suppress Democratic votes in the election this year. This should be the headline on all newspapers in this country. Furthermore, the network and CNN news casts should be devoting nearly 24 hours of non-stop coverage to this abomination. Tactics like this help dictators remain in office.
This is not hyperbole! Mukasy needs to be brought before Congress next week to explain why he should not be forced out of office immediately.

Major kudos to David Iglesias,a true american. This guy ought to be considered for AG,No ?.Not bound by party affiliation but duty of country what a guy.Let's hope the Obama admin will have the guts to go after those who have broken our laws & not sweep wrong doing under the rug with the simply "in the interest of bi-partisanship BS".But we have already seen we are all the "same,we don't prosecute ourselves BS".Just take a look at the Al Smith dinner video:You really think after sitting with law breakers & yukking-it up with 'em O is going to bring justice ?That will be the day.

Months ago I commented about the caging going on in the swing states. That's the real crime.
The SoS in Colorado had successfully stripped 19.8% of the registered voters from the list. In a state that has grown since the 2004 election, there are 100,000 less voters than in 2004.
Hopefully the Ohio Supreme Court decision will help other states get the voter rolls straightened out.

"It's a scare tactic." -- Iglesias. Hey, lets intimidate newly-registered voters into giving up. Let's greet them with good ol' boys who will demand proof of identity (and there better not be any typos), proof of residence, proof that the voter's house isn't in foreclosure. Don't you have a criminal record? Haven't I seen you on a wanted poster? You sure don't look like you live here. Aren't you a member of a criminal organization known as the Republican party?

time for the dems to ammo up and roll this back hardcore on the Republicans.
Calling someone un-American for their political leanings is vile. Calling voter suppression un-American is entirely accurate and fair game, as this runs counter to core American values of Democracy.

ALL of you: get over to your local Obama headquarters and volunteer for election protection to be a poll challenger! Or you can volunteer to GOTV canvass on election day. BOTH of those acitivites are CRITICAL at this point. DO IT!!!

It is very Intersting Sandvick did his part to fight the massive voter fraud conspiracy he fingered by challenging 7 absentee ballots. So far as we can tell, this massive fraud did not sway the election. Every one should agreed.
