Indiana Sec of State on Blacks and Dems: "Who's the Master and Who's the Slave?"

Todd Rokita -- the Indiana secretary of state who wants ACORN prosecuted for voter fraud -- may be the gift that keeps on giving.

Earlier today, we reported that Rokita, a Republican, has said he's proud that he was part of the team of GOP activists that descended on Florida and pulled out all the stops to block the 2000 recount and put George Bush in the White House.

Now, a reader points us to this 2007 Associated Press story, which reports:

During a speech Thursday at a Republican event, Todd Rokita said 90 percent of blacks vote for Democrats.

"How can that be?" Rokita said. "Ninety to ten. Who's the master and who's the slave in that relationship? How can that be
healthy?"

So:
- Committed GOP partisan -- check.
- History of racially insensitive comments -- check.

Sounds like just the guy to be running a close election in a year when the first major-party African-American candidate is on the ballot.

Astonishing. Find any Holocaust jokes he's made?

I hope that after this election, the Orwellian-named Help America Vote Act is revoked and a serious cleaning occurs at the Federal Elections Commission.

But clearly something else needs to happen, as well. Every state had better take a hard look at their Secretaries of State. There was a time not too long ago when the Secretary of State was virtually a nonpartisan office, at least in California. And those in charge of registration and elections in counties were all nonpartisan.

Only when politics and the electoral process have a thick firewall placed between them will we, as voters, be assured that elections will be clean and accurately tallied.

I think we have found Palin's running mate for 2012.

Here is a guy you would like to see invited to your childs civics class.
Let's just get down, and all be as hateful as we can be to each other.
It's no wonder the Indiana race is so close.
I'm not very proud to think that this is the way an elected Indiana official thinks, let alone speaks.
We are better than that in Indiana, and better than that in America.

Hard to imagine black voters wanting to align with a political party that still frames race relations in terms of masters and slaves more than 140 years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

Not only that, but I am amazed that any gay or lesbian would want to join a party who so clearly loathes them. Yes, Yes, I know all about the "changing things from within" theory, but it just doesn't work with republicans. Until the party frees itself from the fundamentalists who have a chokehold on it, they will not be an inclusive party.

It's kind of like trying to convince a tavern owner that if he goes smoke-free, he'll attract way more customers than he loses. They just won't believe it.

What a piece of Sh*t!

Your job is to make sure they can vote, who they vote for is none of your business boy.

I hope we can get some sort of federal incentive to the states for voter reform in '12.

I shudder to think.

user-pic

With comments like this, why are even 10% of blacks voting Republican?
.

Maybe they're wannabe overseers?

user-pic

Exactly. This is the real scandal, folks. Who are these 10 percent?? And Alan Keyes/Clarence Thomas don't count!

This shit for brains is a real piece of work! Makes me embarrassed for any time I ever spent in Indiana, which was a considerable amount! When I lived there, I met people just like this, although the vast majority of Hoosiers are wonderful.

Whoa! Still, we shouldn't be surprised. This is the kind of thuggish creep that epitomizes the Repug party. If ever a political party merited complete and utter destruction at the polls, this party of lying, scheming, contemptible dolts is it.

God, what an embarrassment. I LIVE in Indiana !

Mr. Rokita,

You are a tremendous embarrassment to the State of Indiana. Your comments regarding black voters and "who's the master and who's the slave in this relationship?" is all over the internet. I would have hoped that I had resided in a state that was intelligent enough and sophisticated enough that blatant racism would not be a problem. However, you have proved the point that Indiana state leaders still suffer from a lack of sophistication and a lack of intelligence. I also want to ask - are Republicans so dumb that they do not realize that everything is now recorded on the internet and fact checking is almost instantaneous?.

If you manage to retain your seat for the 2008 election, you will be a target for the next election to be voted out of office.

We do not need people such as yourself in state leadership positions.

Sincerely,

TX in IN

Shorter Rokita: Hoosier master? Hoosier slave?
