Pelosi Calls for Ethics Probe of Mahoney

Mere hours after ABCNews.com reported that Rep. Tim Mahoney had agreed to pay $121,000 to a former mistress and Congressional staffer, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has called for an ethics investigation into the allegations.

"I just learned today about the serious allegations concerning Congressman Tim Mahoney," Pelosi said in a statement released last night. "These charges must be immediately and thoroughly investigated by the House Ethics Committee."

Mahoney, a Democrat who won the seat of disgraced former Rep. Mark Foley, called for an ethics investigation of himself last night.

OK - Pelosi won't allow an impeachment investigation of Bush and Cheney while they trampled upon the Constitution, but she is quick to call for an ethics investigation over a mistress. Pelosi's sense of ethics and fairness boggles the mind.

I condemned Pelosi for her "impeachment is off the table" bullshit, but here she's right. This guy seems sleazy, if the charges are right he should go.

Impeachment was never remotely viable from a political standpoint regardless of how well earned it might have been, but those still seething about that ought to take heart because what is happening now is a far worse fate for Bush (and Cheney). This is impeachment by the public not politicians!

As for the Congressman from Florida, the less said the better.

Why not? I've heard a lot of defenders of Pelosi and the Democratic leadership say that...but why wasn't it viable? Because Leiberman didn't want it? What is the basis for it being nonviable. In the case of Nixon, he was re-elected in a landslide...and ended up resigning...why wouldn't Bush, who was weaker in the country than Nixon, politically, have been a good target for impeachment? Because he was still looking for Osama bin Laden after five years of trying to find the terrorist leader? What politically would have been bad for the Democrats...and the country as a whole for that matter...if Cheney and Bush had been subjected to the scrutiny of impeachment proceeding? Or is it that you truly believe that the Constitution no longer applies, that the rule of law is now a quaint anachronism, and that the President and his men are truly without restraint...because that is the effect of not impeaching.

Impeachment was not viable because the partisan Republican delegates in Congress would have tied it up in endless Rove-coached maneuvers. This was different from the Nixon inpeachment. In those days, we had a lot of honest American Republicans in the House of Representatives, who
were willing to honor their Oath of Office and look at the Facts.
Today we have a bunch who rode in on the Gingrich
Revolution, and have loyalty only to their Party,
and none to theie Oath or the country as a whole.
BTW, I'm an Eisenhower Republican, and I'm pissed
at both sides.

But she won't call for an ethics probe on Bush, or Cheney or Rumsfeld???

Powell's intelligent choice demonstrates why we respect him.

But I think he is trying to salvage his tarnished name and maybe even angle for a pardon one day.
