Second Trooper-Gate Probe Expanding
There's further evidence that the investigation into Trooper-Gate being conducted by the state Personnel Board could have real teeth.
The Anchorage Daily News reports that the probe has broadened to include other ethics complaints against Sarah Palin, and actions by other state employees.
That's according to the investigator hired by the board, Timothy Petumenos, who conveyed the information in two recent letters sent to an Anchorage attorney who had threated a lawsuit over Palin's effort to waive confidentiality in the matter.
Petumenos, a Democrat with a reputation for aggressive prosecutions, plans to sit down with the governor, who is cooperating with his investigation, next week.
It's not clear which other ethics complaints about the governor Petumenos is now looking into, but two have been previously reported. One relates somewhat to Trooper-Gate: the state troopers' union alleges that state officials illegally examined the personnel file of Mike Wooten, seeking damaging information on him. Wooten's feud with the Palin family was at the center of Trooper-Gate.
In addition, a good-government activist has alleged that Palin circumvented state hiring practices in giving a job to a supporter.
Petumenos has also requested a copy of the Branchflower report, released Friday.
Many observers have questioned the ability of the personnel board to come to independent conclusions on Trooper-Gate, largely because its three members are appointed by the governor, and it conducts its deliberations largely in secret.
It's unclear when Petumenos' investigation will wrap up, but the ADN also reports that the personnel board has meetings scheduled for Oct. 20 and Nov. 3. Adds the paper: "The agendas for those meetings mention confidential ethics matters to be handled in executive session."
Separately, ADN reports that Walt Monegan, the former public safety commissioner whose firing by Palin is at the heart of Trooper-Gate, has asked the personnel board to hold a hearing, then issue public findings, on whether he was a "rogue" employee and demonstrated "insubordination", as the Palin camp has publicly alleged in an effort to discredit him.
Palin has given several apparently contradictory explanations for why she fired Monegan. Branchflower's report concluded that Monegan's reluctance to fire Wooten was a contributing factor in his own dismissal.

Now this would be funny, if it turned out that this investigation actually grew teeth.
This investigation was launched by Sarah against herself. It was her strategy to say that the Personnel Board, who report to the Executive Branch, and who conduct their business in private, had authority over the Legislature when it came to investigating the matter. That strategy failed.
It would be so funny if she got busted on charges she filed against herself....

She has McCain to thank. He's the one who pushed the idea.

Would the fact that the Personnel Board investigated a claim be grounds for ingoring it the next time it was raised. If so, then "investigating" everything now, and running the results through a closed door analysis insuring control of the report, imunizes Palin.

The board might actually be doing a serious inquiry. Rats jump ship first. The captain goes last.
As much as Alaskans want to emerge on the national scene, they don't want to be national laughingstocks. Palin is shaming the state.

IIRC the personnel board has three appointees that date back to murkowski and only one palin of whom reappointed? i am not sure this is correct. but if it is, it might explain why the investigation could grow teeth -- it's not like palin leaves friends behind her on her path upwards, and murkowski appointees might well not do her bidding now that it's becoming clearer just how vindictive an opportunist she has been overall, not just towards murkowski (not defending him, mind you, just pointing out her MO).
her star is falling rapidly. i admit to schadenfreude.

Doh! That's the new default avatar - I've got to get used to the changes here at TPM. I had a little setback when my auto password was wiped out, but at least I was able to reset! (of course I forgot my password!)

Good article. Just for the record; the three current members of the Personnel Board were appointed by Gov. Frank Murkowski. Palin reappointed one, Debra English of Anchorage, last January, per
http://www.adn.com/troopergate/story/555288.html
Gov. Murkowski appointed S. Palin to the Alaska Conservation Commission. Palin resigned from the Commission in protest after she alleged unethical behavior on the part of a colleague and made multiple complaints to Murkowski. Palin then ran against Murkowski on a reformation platform. Murkowski is a member of Palin's oft referenced; "good old boys club."

Sorry. It seems that pir_anha already clarified the relationship between Gov. Murkowski and members of the current Personnel Board.

I wish I were an Alaskan resident, so I could demand that Palin be investigate on many things. For example, I can't believe that no one is complaining about the Mat Maid fiasco, and the fact that Franci Havemeister's father-in-law is one of the four farmers who received payments from the dairy after it went out of business. Franci, of course, is a former real estate agent and high school friend of Palin's, who is now the Director of the Alaska Department of Agriculture -- with a very nice salary, thank you very much. I'm really curious if Palin is friends with the families of the other three farmers. Why isn't this being investigated?
