Ted Stevens' First Day As a Convicted Felon
Yesterday, in an unanimous decision, the jury in the trial of Sen. Ted Stevens found the seven-term senator guilty on seven count of false statements. The verdict made Stevens, the longest serving Republican in the Senate, a convicted felon and one of only five in all of history to be convicted of a crime, and the first since 1981.
This morning, presidential hopeful and fellow Senator John McCain called for Stevens, embroiled in a close election of his own, to step down.
Fox News caught up with the Senator leaving his office today to return home to Alaska to campaign, and it appeared that becoming a convicted felon hadn't chastened Stevens legendary ornery attitude. At the end of the interview, Trish Turner, the Fox News Senate producer asked the senator, "What is the formula for winning," to which he replied, "Not answering you right now." Take a look.
Also release this morning were scanned versions of all of the notes passed between the jury and Judge Emmet Sullivan, which we've collected here along with the historical official verdict.

Perhaps Governor Palin will campaign with Senator Stevens out of a sense of loyalty.
Either way, it says a lot about her character.

Golly, she's just such a maverick in this great nation of ourseses! This an opportunity, also too, for her to show how independent she is, ya know, because what could be bolder than goin' against what's obviously right?

Republicans in Alaska are not necessarily 'buddies'. In this case, Stevens' and Palin are NOT close. Neither is she close with some of the 'Old Guard' Republicans in the legislature, hence the sham of the 'bi-partisan' committee.
Stevens' is an 'Old Guard' Republican. Sarah is not. That is why we voted her in. We were tired of the good old boys stealing us blind and tired of business as usual.
He should have retired before this but didn't seem to understand that he was not Senator for Life. I haven't voted for him for years. He is a mean, nasty, arrogant person -- and was this way BEFORE he was old. I have many stories showing his elitism attitude. I won't bore you with them.
Stevens' needs to step down and use this as an opportunity to help prepare whoever replaces him.....for the sake of Alaska.
I doubt if he will do it though.

I hope this is day one for Stevens and he can begin his time in hell as a convicted felon! The system will hopefully show him to prison where he can serve his time with a sense of justice and fairness like other felons. No breaks..no mercy...let him feel the justice he has coming!
Politicians like him need to go to jail!

Stevens and McCain should get together, drive some cocktails down their gullets, go bowling, yell obscenities at women and have just a real good old time.
OOoh, it's getting scary! Like some political Poe!
Happy Halloween!
Quoth the Maverick...

Senator Steven is a "Pal" of Sarah Palin's.

No, they are NOT pals. If you check the archives of ADN.COM you will find many stories where they disagreed.

So how come she doesn't have the cojones to denounce him publicly? Wouldn't that be the best thing for her, maverickly speaking? What's the down side at this juncture?

One common voter supression tactic involves purging convicted felons from the voter lists in many states, effectively mandating two distinct classes of citizens. Does it strike anyone as strange that a felon can lose the right to vote but not a felonious elected official or his/her right to a taxpayer funded pension and benefits? Would influence and social standing make any difference here in the way some people are treated as opposed to others? Just wondering.

Just wondering - as a convicted felon, not on parole or pardoned - can Stevens vote in his own election next week?

"Fox News caught up with the Senator leaving his office today to return home to Alaska..."
Let's see. Ted Stevens is a convicted felon. Why isn't he in jail, instead of fleeing the jurisdiction of the court which convicted him?
He should be required to start serving his time and continue to serve it until an appeal reverses that verdict, if it is reversed on appeal, or did Bush already grant him a pardon?

Too bad McCain wasn't around when the Keating five did their deeds. He could have told THEM they should resign.
Oh, he was... and he WAS... wasn't he...
Guess he just wasn't able to follow his own advice, now, was he...
