Who's Paying For Gonzo's Defense On Politicization Charges? We Are.

To defend him against charges that he politicized DOJ hiring practices, Alberto Gonzales will have a private attorney -- on the taxpayers' dime, reports McClatchy.

The move, requested by Gonzo himself, will likely end up costing taxpayers about twice as much as a top DOJ attorney would have, according to the news service.

Gonzales is being sued by a former high-ranking Justice official, Dan Metcalfe, on behalf of a group of his law students. An internal DOJ report found that, under Gonzales, the department had favored politically conservative candidates for internships, prosecutor jobs, and immigration judgeships. The students allege that their careers were irreparably harmed as a result of being unfairly passed over for two department programs that hire law students.

A Justice Department spokesman told McClatchy the department wouldn't comment on the reasons for the approval, or on the cost to taxpayers.

And how do you like this rationale from Robert Bork Jr. -- a spokesman for Gonzales, and the son of the unsuccessful arch-conservative Supreme Court nominee -- for why Gonazles requested the private lawyer?

Gonzales, said Bork Jr., "values the work that the Department's civil attorneys do in all cases" but believes that "private counsel can often be useful where (department) officials are sued in an individual capacity, even where the suit has no substantive merit."

Gonzales couldn't possible want a private attorney because all the DOJ attorneys were chosen, appointed, and promoted for their political and religious stances rather than for their competency as attorneys, could he?

Just one more way the Bush Administration acted to undermine the rule of law and to prove that democracy cannot survive in the USA.

Gonzales should be forced to hire as his defense lawyer a graduate of Jerry Falwell's Regent University -- where his henchwoman Monica Goodling was trained.

All while the GOP pr*cks are refusing to give the auto companies a LOAN to help save over 3 million American jobs...will we ever be rid of these GOP vermin..?

user-pic

Hell let Monica Goodling defend him.

Gonzales was Indicted today in Texas along side VP Cheney. A bit off topic but worth it.

McALLEN, Texas — A South Texas grand jury has indicted Vice President Dick Cheney and former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales on charges related to the alleged abuse of prisoners in Willacy County's federal detention centers.

The inditement in Texas involves charges of organized criminal activity. That could bring the RICO statutes into play. Let's hope that neither Gonzales and Cheney are allowed to use the proceeds from their criminal activity in their defense.

Now this really pisses me off. As a federal employee for 20+ years, I've been told my entire career that if I were to be sued or otherwise get into legal trouble personally, I would be on my own. The government would absolutely NOT provide any legal representation. I guess you have to be a war criminal to get special treatment.

"A Justice Department spokesman told McClatchy the department wouldn't comment on the reasons for the approval, or on the cost to taxpayers."

It is truly apalling that we tolerate our government declining our inquiries into their actions. It is our money they are spending so we are entitled to know the rationale for their decisions. If they refuse to disclose their rationale, they should be thrown out of office, period.

So when does Gonzo start paying his own legal fees as I'm sure this won't be the last time he's a defendant?
