GAO: Treasury "May Not Be Able To Ensure That Conflicts Are Fully Identified."

The authors of the GAO report don't appear impressed by Treasury's efforts to avoid conflicts of interest -- one of the prime concerns raised by some observers, given the number of top Treasury officials who used to work for companies receiving money under the bailout program.

From the report:

Lacking a comprehensive and complete system to monitor conflicts of interest, Treasury runs the risk that it may not be able to ensure that conflicts are fully identified and appropriately addressed.

Doesn't sound too encouraging.

Conflicts of interest? The whole bailout fiasco is a huge circle jerk. Does anyone believe that the timing of this emergency is serendipitous? They absolutely chose the time of this forever looming "catastrophe". They did it when their boy, Paulson, was still at the helm of Treasury and when Bush was still the lamest of ducks. They forced the issue with congress and also paid them off handsomely. This is a planned implosion. Appointing Geithner as Treasury Secretary shows that Obama has decided to keep the circle jerk going. The Federal Reserve is a money cartel. They control the money supply. They control the economy. They are not necessarily loyal to the prosperity of the US population. They are loyal to their stockholders who are located in many different countries. Hyper-inflation and massive unemployment are inevitable. With derivatives like the CDSs still hanging out there, I don't see how they can resolve this problem without hitting the reset button.

Citibank is buying an infrastructure company in Spain for ~$10 Billion. What does that have to do with increasing lending? Nada, as far as I can tell.

Wasn't it a requirement that this money go to increasing lending? This $10 billion acquisition seems a blatant blow-off of that requirement

How much bailout money did Citi just get? $20 billion immediately and $300 billion in guarantees?

This is BS. Citi is acquiring the company, Itinere Infraestructuras, through its infrastructure fund, Citi Infrastructure Partners.
