Holder: I'm No Gonzo -- And I'll Go After Corporate Crime

Earlier we noted that, in speaking this morning about Eric Holder, his pick for Attorney General, Barack Obama seemed to go out of his way to suggest that Holder would reverse the politicization of DOJ that we saw under President Bush and Alberto Gonzales.

Holder's own remarks backed up that notion. He said:

It is incumbent upon those of us who lead the Department to ensure not only that the nation is safe but also that our laws and traditions are respected. There is not a tension between those two. We can and we must ensure that the American people remain secure and that the great constitutional guarantees that define us as a nation are truly valued. For example, working with Republicans and Democrats in Congress, should I be confirmed, we look forward to actually structuring policies that are both protective and consistent with who we are as a nation.

And Holder included an interesting hint suggesting that he may be more aggressive than his predecessors under Bush in going after corporate malfeasance -- specifically, one would assume, in regard to the current financial crisis:

National security concerns are not defined only by the challenges created by terrorists abroad, but also by criminals in our midst, whether they be criminals located on the street or in a boardroom.

Holder's full remarks follow after the jump...

Thank you, President-elect Obama, for the honor that you have bestowed upon me. I look forward to working with you and members of this national security team assembled here. The Department of Justice plays a unique role on this team.

I also look forward to working with the men and women of the Department of Justice to revitalize the Department's efforts in those areas where the Department has unique capabilities and responsibilities in keeping our people safe, in ensuring fairness, and in protecting our environment. This President-elect and the team you see before you are prepared to meet the challenges that we will confront. From my experience at the Department of Justice, I know that we cannot be successful if we act alone. We must never forget that in many ways those in state and local law enforcement are our first line of detection and protection against those from foreign shores who would do us harm. We will need to interact with our state and local partners in new, innovative ways to help them solve the other issues that they confront on a daily basis. National security concerns are not defined only by the challenges created by terrorists abroad, but also by criminals in our midst, whether they be criminals located on the street or in a boardroom. We must forge new ties and reestablish old bonds with our state and local partners.

There is much that needs to be done in this new century. I am confident that working with our President-elect, the people on this stage and the departments that they represent, those of both parties who I know and respect on Capitol Hill, we can keep our nation safe, strong and respected.

I have high expectations for this guy...

I have expectations too as I do for the entire Obama Team. I just want to know how every single section of our government failed as if we have no safe-guards.

user-pic

Is he going to clean up the department first? Expectations are high but information on how is non-existent. Right now the department lacks the credibility to backup his lofty statements.

user-pic

I have no expectations for Holder, Obama or any others.

Our nation has witnessed the greatest socio-political transformation in its history. The true test of Holder's DoJ will be whether or not it pursues the Bush administration's crimes.

Though there are nearly too many to list, this won't happen. They've called for a "commission." And like the 911 commission, it will prove to be another Sawyer-esque whitewash.

Not to put salt on your PB&J but ... don't expect too much "change." The culprits will cash-in, footloose and fancy free. You and me, of course, shall be left holding the bag.

Tiowally,
Sweetie - what do you base this rank pessimism on - what facts or evidence do you salt our peanut butter sammiches with-better yet who owns that salt shaker and asked you to use it ?
The Obama administration will return to best practices by IMPLEMENTING policy consisitent with the Constitution of these United States . I will truly look forward to having this conversation regarding 'salted sandwiches " with you January 2010.
Here's another heads up-keep an eye on Senator Durbin on bringing forth charges against the torturers -( pls reread Holder's statement about working with the Senate). And keep an eye on VEEP Biden -he will be ferretting out all the "intertwined Aspenroots "over there at the "undisclosed Cheney Bunker" . (David Addington & John Yoo best go ahead and lawyer up now - )
So tiowally you have your homework , see me in about one year to see "who has sailed , who has failed , and whose been left behind "
And you might also want to keep an eye on the moderate former Republicans like Sen Hagel as we return to the rule of lAW- ( don't believe me go ask David Iglesias or Sam Faddis ..)

We need a DOJ that is worthy of its name so bad. I am pleased with this choice. There is no way in hell he would allow a party hack like Karl Rove to control, guide or even suggest an action. And I am sorry if it holds up somebody's time line, but I want to see a real investigation of what has been going on in our nation's Department of Justice for the last 8 years. After the facts are duly gathered, I want to see some jury trials. If the people cannot trust the Attorney General, who else is there to protect their legal interests?

user-pic

Again, not to put salt on your PB&J.

user-pic

Not like Gonzo huh? Does that mean he will go after Bush the way Gonzo never would. How about the USA's scandal or the Rove connection to prosecuting Don Siegleman etc..

Or by saying not like Gonzo you mean he won't cover Obama's ass like his own personal attorney...which means of course that he will act like every other AG is supposed to act.

God, for a minute there I thought we had someone so insulted by the Bush corruption that he was mad as hell and besides restoring the DoJ to normal functioning was going to go after those who had so badly corrupted it. Oh well.....

user-pic

Of course ...after 8yrs of completely corrupting the DoJ, getting the entire Judiciary infiltrated with incompetent ideologues, bragging rights going to Liberty U grads and their right wing counter parts who have 'burrowed in' so it will take years to denazify the department.

Now that we are in the aftermath of deregulation and illegal spying and party prosecutiions, Eric just wants us all to get along, let bygones be bygones, and do the right thing in the future.

After all, what we really want above Justice is a smooth transition and just let Harry Reid tell them all just how dissatisfied he is with their previous behavior. That'll teach 'em...just look at how rebuked Joe Liebermann after Reid told him he didn't appreciate the way he acted. Joe is just so ashamed he vowed not to donate any money to Reid's running opposition for election like he did several other dem senators.

Eric has much to prove and demonstrate upon inheriting the Department of Non-corporate-Justice

user-pic

btw...don't you wish he could stop the current theft of the treasury being used as "Wealthcare" instead of just having to stand by and watch like congress and the rest of us do as conservatives rob us blind.

What part of, "50 days until the new team takes office" don't you understand?
