Report: Feds Secretly Taped Blagojevich
Federal agents recently worked with one of Rod Blagojevich's closest former aides to secretly tape the Illinois governor as part of a wide-ranging probe into corruption in his administration, reports the Chicago Tribune.
Says the paper:
The cooperation of John Wyma, 42, one of the state's most influential lobbyists, is the most stunning evidence yet that Blagojevich's once-tight inner circle appears to be collapsing under the pressure of myriad pay-to-play inquiries.
Wyma has made frequent appearnaces in the scandal. Adds the Tribune:
Indeed, Wyma's and the Blagojeviches' relationship has always been both personal and professional. The governor routinely reported exchanging personal gifts and often appeared at Wyma-sponsored fundraisers where Wyma's clients hobnobbed with the governor before turning over checks for his campaign fund.
Blagojevich, who will decide on Barack Obama's replacement in the U.S. Senate, has been under federal scrutiny for over three years, but has not been formally charged with wrongdoing.

This doesn't smell right!

There is an article in today's Chicago Sun Times that questions the veracity of the Tribune's story. It quotes Wyma's attorney and spokesperson as saying that at no time did he record any conversations or wear a wire. I doubt seriously that the AUSA office would allow a leak of this nature during a very important high profile investigation. I am skeptical of this story by the Tribune.

How convenient for the Tribune to run this "story"...hmm, isn't our next President-elect from Illinois?? Such a coincidence...

Rod B. was suppose to be the face of the new Illinois democratic party 6 yrs ago. After he won the gov. in 2003 there was even talk of him entering the national scene as a presidential canidate----(another odd sounding name from IL.)
While he has yet to be prosecuted, there is a definite sliminess and putried stench exuding from his office. After the unrepented sleaze of the previous governor Ryan, who is serving time right now, Illinoisians had hoped the democratic populist Blagojevich would bring a breath of fresh air. It is very sad.

The only problem with your missive is that it provides no evidence whatsoever for any presumption of guilt.

If Fitz had incontrovertible evidence of guilt, Blago'd be in the dock tomorrow. But just like the other major cases Fitz has worked--George Ryan for instance--he starts at the bottom and works his way up the corruption food chain. Rod's going down; it's just a matter of time. And given his almost complete political incompetence (the state still doesn't have a budget and he's stalling a public works bill that would benefit schools and transportation infrastructure because he's in a blood feud with the General Assembly), no one will shed a tear, especially Barack Obama.

Blagojevich doing the "perp walk" today?--it is not what I want to read or see either--but if it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck-and here "smells" like a duck--it is fowl. Fitz will soon lay out the case.
