Prosecutor: Madoff Violated Bail By Sending Assets To Relatives
Did Madoff violate bail?
The Associated Press reports:
Prosecutors on Monday said disgraced financier Bernard Madoff violated bail conditions by mailing about $1 million worth of jewelry and other assets to relatives and should be jailed without bail."The defendant's recent actions amount to obstruction of justice," Assistant U.S. Attorney Marc Litt told a judge at a hearing in federal court in Manhattan.
Madoff's lawyer, Ira Sorkin, described the items as heirlooms that included cufflinks and antique watches. He said they were not significant assets. The items were sent to Madoff's children and to unidentified friends vacationing in Florida.
The prosecutor said the case against Madoff "is strong and getting stronger."

Is there any way to build a floating jail that could then be dropped on top of this "man"?

Criminal RICO, anyone? How have the prosecutors not seized or frozen every asset this schmuck (and his wealthy extended family) has? It's pretty clear that his business was nothing more than a criminal enterprise.

Why is it that drug dealers get their assets frozen, normal joe schmoes get their bank accounts frozen if they forget to file taxes for a year or two. But this guy? Nah...go ahead! Send all your good stuff to friends in Flar-ida. (Is Florida the new Switzerland?)

I imagine the pieces were not in a bank to freeze.

So, his lawyer admits he broke the conditions of his bail, but that it's OK, because the assets he hid were heirlooms? Sounds like a great defense. Also, shouldn't punishment hurt? If you don't want to lose your precious family heirlooms, then don't bilk investors by running Ponzi schemes. Doesn't seem all that hard to figure out...

If they were "not significant items" why the hell was he mailing them in direct violation of his bail? Lock him up and throw away the f**king key. Is there some way we can declare him an "enemy combatant" and just hold him indefinitely without trial? - Just kidding - but sort of not kidding.

This is as significant as ....
Detroit CEOs flying to DC in private jets.
Great symbolic value, penny ante "obstruction" value.

I wouldn't mind one of those antique heirloom watches... they tend to run in the multiple thousands of dollars.
I think Bernie took a little too much money from folks with power or close to power. I don't think he's going to get away with too many shenanigans post being 'caught'.

Does anybody believe that if powerhouse people like Spielberg lost that much money - we wouldn't be hearing about it 24/7. When powerful people 'of that persuasion' break a fingernail... the rest of us hear about ad nauseam.
Oh, I think that money is safe and sound over in our 51st state... I think those charities are going to get a double dip. Their money is gone to their favorite terrorist state AND they will get a write off for the 'loss'.
Don't be fooled Americana... remember who we're dealing with here.
