Reid: Free Ted Stevens!
Former senator Ted Stevens (yes, now actually former) is keeping up the fight against his guilty verdict -- and now Sen. Majority Leader Harry Reid has lent him a hand.
Reid told Politico that he believes Stevens shouldn't serve jail time.
My personal feeling, you guys, I don't know what good that [would do]... He was a real war hero too, you know. He's been punished enough.
Reid said he thinks Stevens was simply behind the curve of modern ethics standards in not disclosing the $250,000 in gifts he received from VECO CEO Bill Allen, saying of the famously internet-unsavvy Uncle Ted that "it's a different world we live in, and Stevens did not understand that."
Sentencing for Stevens had tentatively been scheduled for next month, but it's unlikely that he'll be sentenced any time soon. Last month, lawyers for Stevens asked for a new trial, claiming that the prosecution had presented false evidence and withheld information that could have helped the defense.

Reid has to go. This guy is a cancer to our government.

Doesn't the "new" Congress have to elect new leadership? Did they already do so [at some undisclosed location]?
If they did, why, oh why did they again choose Harry Reid? Haven't both he & Pelosi shown themselves to be total incompetents?

General Shinseki was a war hero. Ted Stevens is a dirtbag! Harry needs to join Feinstein and Lieberman in a swift exit from all leadership posts.

So revealing when Reid says out loud that the ethics of not taking "undisclosed gifts" is a modern invention. If it's a different world now that doesn't tolerate Congressional bribery, what were they getting away with in their salad days? When exactly did this different world begin? If only this different world didn't include Reid as senate majority leader.

Someone should remind Reid that Stevens has been caught on tape saying he might have to "serve a little jail time" if caught. So let him serve a little jail time - he was obviously prepared for it.

Statements like these from a Congressional leader make you wonder if he is at all qualified for his position.
You made the rules, Harry.
Stand up Harry, and quit be an irresponsible whimp. Or better yet relinquish your post to someone who can do the job of leader.

Reid is just the tip of the festering shit pile that constitutes our Senate today. With the exception of Feingold and a couple of others (none come to mind), the Senate is run by over the hill self important boobs running around in Depends (RTM).
So Ted did what he was ordered to do 65 years ago, got some "I was there metals", attains "HERO" status in Reids myopic eyes and is therefore entitled to an ethics free zone that is the Senate and a get of of jail free card if Reid were god (he thinks he is). Jeeze the Senate sucks!!!!!
End of rant

I was going to comment but anything I had to say would not have covered it better than this. Thanks!
One thing though, if Reid goes, please, please take Nancy and Diane with you.

Prisons are full of "war heroes." I'm all for doing something about that, but let's start with those who have already served too much time for their infractions.

Reid is pathetic. I know he thinks it's collegial to say that, but from the cheap seats it is simply validating a corrupt tyrant.

C'mon guys, Reid and Stevens were part of the 'world's most exclusive club.' You can't expect such antiquated notions as the 'rule of law' to take precedence over that, can you?
The 'senioritis' that is afflicting the Senate is bringing about the downfall of this country. Reid would rather stick up for his pals and moneymen than for his party or our country.

Doesn't matter - Bush will pardon Stevens on his way out the door anyway.

I don't see what good sending Stevens to jail would do either. It's a nonviolent essentially victimless crime. If it weren't for the political hatred no progressive in the world would advocate jail in this case. There is zero danger to the public and no possibility of re-offending.
I also don't think we should be putting kids in jail for getting caught with pot.

Bullshit; "political hatred" has nothing to do with it. People also get sent to jail to discourage others from committing the same crime. If Reid had cited Stevens' age and suggested fines rather than jail, then he might have a leg to stand on. Declaring that disgrace and losing an election is "punishment enough" for selling his office is just another illustration of the blinders that Reid has when it comes to senators; he's highly concerned about affronts to the club; the rule of law, not so much.

Hey, I have problems with the current sentencing guidelines myself, but I would be willing to bet that Ted Stevens was all for minimum mandatory sentences as long as he thought they would apply to someone else!

Following your logic, Bernie Madoff should also walk free. He didn't cause physical harm to anybody, did he??? A CRIME IS A CRIME and should be punished!

Are you freaking kidding me? What planet is Reid on? He's sure not on this one. His behavior has been appalling.
Someone last night -- either Keith or Rachel -- played again the tape of the Senate giving a standing ovation to Stevens. This sickens me beyond belief. It's, I think, the most disgraceful display of the Senate in a long, long time and is absolute proof that there are no ethics or morals in the membership. They had a chance to make a statement. Reid made the worst kind when he lauded Stevens. A simple "thank you for your service" was all that was called for at that time. Reid is already in trouble for his re-election. He's going to lose, big time.

Isn't it interesting how Harry Reid's outrage over corruption doesn't seem to apply to Republicans? Hell, I'll bet Harry would've been happy to welcome ol' Ted back to the Senate this week had the voters of the Palin state happened to re-elect him. Convicted felon? No problem! Appointed by a Democrat who's under indictment, but hasn't been convicted of anything. Whoa! Time to bar the door!! Especially if you happen to be from the "Seed of Cain" (to us non-Mormons, that's a person of African descent). Harry Reid seems so hell-bent on torpedoing the Democrats' chances to enact their agenda, it's getting harder and harder not to conclude that he's a Republican mole.

Seems as though Harry likes the class warfare and the difference between those with and those with out....anybody in a higher government position such as his beloved Senate or any one with tons of money should never be punished...always should go free and never make any sort of restitution...I think the people of Nevada need to vote this elitist old coot out of office..I think he is a sneaky spy for the GOP..he seems to do every thing with in his power to sabotage Democrats and any legislation the Democrats try to pass..especially if it might help the working class

What is truly amazing about Ted Stevens is that we are supposed to believe this is all Ted Stevens ever did for himself in his decades long career in the Senate. How is it that the Prince of the Pork Barrel only managed to get a renovation on his house while he brought untold millions of dollars to his State? I would guess he has probably done a whole lot more for himself over the years we do not yet know.
As for the Senate, to give Stevens a standing ovation of just under a minute (56 seconds by Rachel Maddow's account) suggests the Senate is actually approving of his apparent malfeasance. It should be embarassing.

His entire personal wealth is based on self enrichment through self interested legislation and deals with people who benefit from his position of power.
" * Armed with the power his committee posts give him over the Pentagon, Stevens helped save a $450-million military housing contract for an Anchorage businessman. The same businessman made Stevens a partner in a series of real estate investments that turned the senatorโs $50,000 stake into at least $750,000 in six years.
* An Alaska Native company that Stevens helped create got millions of dollars in defense contracts through preferences he wrote into law. Now the company pays $6 million a year to lease an office building owned by the senator and his business partners. Stevens continues to push legislation that benefits the company.
* An Alaskan communications company benefited from the senatorโs activities on the Commerce Committee. His wife, Catherine, earned tens of thousands of dollars from an inside deal involving the companyโs stock. "

Don't forget all the money and contracts he STEERED to his son Ben and to former aides.
FOLLOW THE MONEY!!
Ask about Benny being the recipient of approx $750K to run the Special Olympics. Or ask about Benny being made chairman of a seafood council INVENTED AND FUNDED by his Dad.
We Alaskans are still waiting for the other shoe to drop on Benny.
We've known / suspected that Ted was an old crook for a long time, but proving it is something else.
Thank God for the FBI.

Excuse me??!!
As a former U.S. Senator, Stevens helped write the laws. He doesn't get a free pass for not "understanding" them.
And he shouldn't go to jail because he's a war hero??!! I didn't realize signing up for the military included an automatic pardon for any crimes he may commit. That excuse ranks way down there with Nixon's "if the President does it, it's not illegal."
I don't disagree with the idea of limiting his jail term because of his physical age. His crime does not warrant the equivalent of life in prison. But he has to be held accountable for his crimes.

Obama better start thinking of some way to get rid of Harry Reid because if he doesn't, Reid is going to be a huge thorn in Obama's side. Reid has failed us at every turn and "we the people" want him gone. So, when are the Senate Democrats going to do something about him.
He enables Bush for 8 years and then he makes a statement that "He doesn't report to Obama" and he won't support him if he doesn't want to.
Please God, make Harry Reid go away.

It has nothing to do with "political hatred" and everything to do with accountability. If every Senator who is convicted of taking bribes is allowed to get away with essentially a slap on the hand, where is the incentive for the rest of them to not take bribes?
If we don't enforce the laws we have, then why do we have laws?

"...simply behind the curve of modern ethics standards"??? Jesus wept.
And don't I remember that Duke Cunningham was also a war hero? Didn't keep him out of prison, did it?
Will somebody please pull Harry Reid's head out of his a**?

"He was a real war hero too, you know"
So "war hero" is now a get-out-of-jail-free card? Didn't work too well for Duke Cunningham, who had a much better claim to the title than Ted. Ted flew transport planes from 1944 to 1946. He did receive the DFC for flying behind enemy lines. While he was trained to fly fighters, he never flew one in combat.
Has the level of institutional corruption reached such a point where a conviction on seven felonies doesn't warrant jail time?

I'd be fine with house arrest in Girdwood for x number of years, with a tracking ankle bracelet and frequent monitoring by the equivalent of a parole officer.
Yes, he's old, but there's no way he's been punished enough.
I like the idea of his having to stay in the house that finally brought him to account for his use of his office for personal gain. That would be akin to Napoleon's exile on Elba, in my mind.
Maybe all political malefactors should have to be under house arrest in Girdwood (Blagojevich, anyone?). That might make 'em think twice before putting themselves before the responsibilities of office.

There should be a mandatory retirement age for Congress...65 or 70 and out !!!

What Reid meant to say is, "He's a senator". Two schmucks who long ago lost the ability to differentiate right from wrong. We need to change the term of a senator to eight years and out. And after that they can never sit or serve in government again in any capacity at all - ever. And can never lobby for or work for any company or subsidiary of a company that ever obtained a government contract while they were in office. Nor can they work in an industry which contributed more than 10% of monies to their political campaigns. And that includes companies created after the fact that are substantially the same companies which existed while they were in office. If the retirement benefit they get isn't enough for them too bad.
Maybe that sounds drastic but we have to break the ties between government and private enterprise if we want this country to survive.

The old boys club is a disgrace and Harry Reid is so far down the ladder of common sense and respectability that he's eating dust.
In light of all Reid's questionable actions and remarks, what does he have that has everyone afraid to cross him or get him the hell out of the leadership?
He is starting to stink really bad...start investigating this turkey, something is NOT right with Reid.
As far as Ted Stevens being no threat and old etc, who cares, the law was broken, jail time is warranted. If there is no punishment, there is no deterrent for future lawbreakers.
