The Daily Muck

A Florida hedge fund manager has gone missing after being accused of defrauding investors of millions. While it is too soon to know the exact value of the alleged fraud, Arthur Nadel managed a fund that may have been worth as much as $350 million, most of which has been lost. (Associated Press)

Another "oops" at Gitmo, where Haji Bismullah became the latest detainee to be released after being deemed no longer an "enemy combatant." Bismullah was released after a military panel seemed to acknowledge a mistake of grand proportions. (New York Times)

The Government Accountability Office released a report finding that 83 of the nation's 100 largest corporations maintain subsidiaries in offshore tax havens. Among these 83 companies were several, including General Motors and AIG, currently receiving bailout money. (Associated Press)

An investigation lead by Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) found that a researcher with the University of Wisconsin received $19 million from a medical device corporation while helping develop new products. (Wall Street Journal)

A former Oklahoma sheriff was convicted on Saturday of 13 felonies, including second degree rape and bribery by a public official. Mike Burgess was found guilty of using his position as a member of a team controlling a drug court in Custer County, Okla., to sexually coerce female prisoners and defendants. The jury recommended a sentence of 94 years. (Associated Press)

A report issued by the Government Accountability Office found that most medical devices have never been shown to be safe or effective by the Food and Drug Administration. The new report comes on the tails of a letter sent by FDA scientists last week to President-elect Obama complaining of management problems at the agency. (New York Times)

Why are they moderating comments over at the new TPMDC site?

Good question...

Same question I just asked Josh in e-mail.

I hope it's an accident/error in config.

Looks like the glitch has been corrected now.

"most medical devices have never been shown to be safe or effective by the Food and Drug Administration"

Let the overhaul begin please

"Another "oops" at Gitmo, where Haji Bismullah became the latest detainee to be released after being deemed no longer an "enemy combatant.""

A good start would be to find out how, why, and by whom each of the prisoners at Gitmo were deemed to be "enemy Combatants" in the first place.

We may find out that there just isn't a trail of evidence even for this basic pronouncement.

I'm not sure from the article what the problem with the researcher was who was getting paid (huge amounts) for developing medical devices that the company paying him could sell. He wasn't in any way responsible for their approval by the FDA and he wasn't recommending them to doctors.

And as far as the Oklahoma sheriff goes, that's SOP in that part of the country. I don't understand how he ever got convicted. Does it mean that OK will lose about half its constabulary unless the state legislature quick passes a law forbidding investigations of police officers?

If they are breaking the law, they should also be in prison, not running them.

"... 83 of the nation's 100 largest corporations maintain subsidiaries in offshore tax havens."

But we have known this for YEARS!

user-pic

And it is amazing how profitable those subsidiaries are compared to the mother companies which are paying taxes in the USA.

That is easy to control. The mother company in the USA volunteers to pay an exhorbitant amount for something provided by the subsidiary and the profits are automatically transferred out of the USA.

I find it interesting that Medtronics, the company that gave the U. of Wisconsin researcher thousands of dollars, is the same medical device manufacturer quoted in the FDA story.
