The Daily Muck
President Obama issued an executive order yesterday limiting the ability of former presidents to keep certain records private. Under the order, former presidents, former vice presidents, and relatives of former presidents will have less control over the release of their records. The president and the National Archives will have ultimate control over release decisions. (Associated Press)
Another executive order drafted by President Obama, expected to be issued today, would close the Guantanamo Bay facility within a year. He is also expected to ban abusive interrogation practices and order a review of detention policies for captured militants. (Reuters)
A former employee of Florida's Department of Children and Families pleaded guilty to one charge of producing child pornography after he was caught taking nude photos of two teenage boys, one of whom was identified as a foster child of the agency. The crime carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years. (Associated Press)
Two women have reached a settlement with the Attorney General's office of Ohio over sexual harassment complaints. The women allege that an aide to former AG Marc Dann had harassed them; the aide was fired and the complaints lead to the eventual resignation of Dann in May of 2008 after it came to light that he had had an extramarital affair with a third employee. The women will each receive $247,500. (Associated Press)
The Attorney General of Oregon has announced that he will investigate the 2007 relationship between Portland mayor Sam Adams, who was then a member of the city council, and a then-18-year-old boy who was working as a legislative intern at City Hall. The investigation was requested by the district attorney for Multnomah County and the Portland police chief. Portland is the largest American city to have an openly gay mayor. These records that Obama just made it easier to access -- where are they? Are they all actually, physically in the national archives? Or are some of them in the possession of former elected officials? I ask this because I don't think that Dick Cheney, for example, cares what Obama orders or what the Presidential Records Act says. I assume that he took a lot of stuff with him, and that they would have to be taken from him by force.

Serious
Goal
The Cessation of Hamas rocketfire into Israel
Solution: U.S makes a simple intellectual property transaction With Hamas.
!!!$&$%^%##%#$#%!!!eal with those bastards
No Israel involvement necessary!!
Simply and transparently the trade would be: USA uses its United Nations security council vote to initiate thorough transparent investigations into the recorded incidents of possible war crimes during Israel’s operation Cast Lead in Gaza recently. In exchange for these Thorough Investigations towards prosecutions, Hamas would agree to cease firing rockets into Israel.
The agreement, for it to be credible and enduring, would need Thorough transparency through investigation processes, trials etc and, if subsequently justifyable ; diligent prosecution and binding sentences for individuals convicted of War Crimes.
Plus= Israels population will finally get a peaceful night sleep without having to rely on their their current Political and Military leadership to achieve it for them.
Plus= the individuals’s who were involved in operation Cast lead, would have a just and open forum in which to clear their names of any alleged war crimes or crimes against humanity
Plus=The Palestinian people will get some Just respite at least as an interim to their next round of tenuous life negotiations.
Plus= ....(fill it for use self and US)
Ceremonial Precedent for handing over 1 more effectives to save a nation? , Jeeeeezz!! gotta be somewhere?

"A former employee of Florida's Department of Children and Families"
I consistently read that "former" civil servants are being prosecuted.
My question: Is this a way for civil servants to still receive pensions/retirements/other benefits after they have been prosecuted by retiring, rather than being fired and losing all?
If this is the case, it is a real travesty of justice... IMHO

some corrections on the story about the Portland Mayor: it was 2005, not 2007 that the relationship began, when the young man was 18. He did not work at the Portland City Hall or for then-Commissioner Sam Adams; he was a state legislative intern in Salem, Oregon.
