Barnes: Global Warming Isn't Man Made -- But I Won't Tell You How I Know That

Paging Obama's new environmental team: Fred Barnes has some crucial new information about global warming -- it's not man-made, apparently!

Problem is, Barnes won't tell us how he knows that -- but maybe he'll tell you.

Check out this passage from Barnes' latest column for the Weekly Standard:

Democrats couldn't hide their self-consciousness about the excesses of their own bill. Supporters made few TV appearances to defend it and rarely talked about specific spending items. Obama sounded like Al Gore on global warming. The more the case for man-made warming falls apart, the more hysterical Gore gets about an imminent catastrophe. The more public support his bill loses, the more Obama embraces fear-mongering. (our itals.)

We hadn't heard anything lately about the case for man-made global warming falling apart. In fact, just the opposite. So we called Barnes and asked him what he was referring to.

At first, he cited the fact that it's been cold lately.

Perhaps sensing this was less than convincing, Barnes then asserted that there had been a "cooling spell" in recent years. "Haven't you noticed?" he asked.

Asked for firmer evidence of such cooling, Barnes demurred, telling TPMmuckraker he was too busy to track it down.

We pressed Barnes again: surely he could tell us where he had found this vital new information, which could upend the current debate over how to address global warming.

In response, Barnes said only that he knew where he had found it, but would not tell us, apparently as a matter of principle. "I'm not going to do your research for you," he eventually said, before hurriedly ending the call.

So we came up empty. Let's hope the Obama policy-makers have more luck getting this out of Barnes -- after all, our future could depend on it.

Man, I wish I could get away with that for a living.

Me: Our profit margins will exceed 60% over the next 3 years.

My boss: Do you have any numbers to support that?

Me: Hey, I won't do your research for you!

user-pic

Is anyone else willing to go make fun of The Weekly Standard in their comments section?

user-pic

Thank you for that lack of information, Fred. I think you're talking through your hairpiece. (Wouldn't someone who has real information pass it along so that information could be, you know, acted upon? Before all the ice melts and we're under water? Or before we all freeze to death in front of the glaciers that must be growing?)

user-pic

careful - you may get them to act on this information as they acted on their knowledge of WMDs in Iraq. didn't want to let the UN inspectors know what they knew.

user-pic

As for glaciers growing? Who knows? (And Who ain't telling.)

As for glaciers melting? Look: glaciers move so slowly (if they move at all, as alleged) that they are as direct result virually invisible.

Now, Mr. Barnes: 'fess up: you haven't a clue what you're talking about, which is why you substitute disproven ideological junk-science for thought. Huh? What do you mean, "I don't know what you mean?"

user-pic

And that's not even the dumbest thing he says in that article. The dumbest thing he says is this:

And you can imagine the Democratic attacks on Republicans for opposing aid for college students, emergency help for strapped homeowners, funds for medical research, and all the other non-stimulative stuff in the bill. Politics can be unfair.

Yeah Fred, it is SO unfair for Democrats to attack Republicans for opposing aid for college students, emergency help for strapped homeowners, and funds for medical research merely because Republicans are opposing aid for college students, emergency help for strapped homeowners, and funds for medical research. How dare the Democrats state the Republican position on the biggest issue of the day.

user-pic

Fred is a grade AAA deluxe dimwit.

user-pic

I don't think he's a dimwit. I think he's a liar.

user-pic

There really isn't any good reason to believe that Fred isn't both a dimwit AND a liar. He works for the Weekly Standard, I thought they hired for the double header guys. After all, they have freaking Kristol.

user-pic

If one can be a dimwit, but not so much that one doesn't know what one is saying, then I suppose one can also be a liar.

So if we can agree to that split we can get along.

user-pic

I'd like for Fred to tell us where he got the information, but first I want John McCain to tell us how to "get Bin Ladin." He said he knew how so many times during the campaign. I thought we'd all know by now. Oh, and he also knew how to "fix" the economy. So far all I hear from him is, "This won't work and that won't work." Nothing like, "OK boys and girls, just do this...."

user-pic

Perhaps McShame is waiting for a Rethug administration to tell how to get bin Ladin.
In 2013 he can tell Sarah Palin after she gets sworn in. (snark)

user-pic

I thought we just HAD a rethug administration. Why didn't he tell Dubya what to do?

user-pic

Because:

1. Dubya wouldn't listen. And,

2. McSlimer wasn't talling.

user-pic

I wonder how hard it must have been for you to either keep the smirk out of your voice or to not simply break down laughing. Mr. Barnes must be so happy to hear from people at TPM; it's a wonder that he takes your calls. I'm glad he does though. I needed a good laugh on this dreary Monday.

user-pic

When you are in the right wing, what you say doesn't have to make sense, it doesn't have to be true. After all the earth is only 4,000 years old and your readers (those that can read) and listeners are uneducated and willing to believe anything you say as long as your conservative bona-fides are correct.

Don't you remember in high school when these types would stand up and make the most ridiculous arguments and get smacked down by the teachers? This is why they hate liberals.

user-pic

You've touched on a key aspect of the problem. They still have the same minds they had in high school (and by high school standards, theirs weren't great).

user-pic

And he has the nerve to make fun of Blago!

user-pic

Oh my. Flashback time:

"I have here in my vest pocket the names of scientists who have been perpetrating this global warming hoax....."

user-pic

House Un-American Global Warming Hoax Activities Committee (HUAGWHAC)!

user-pic

Let me guess: that list isn't actually a blank sheet of paper; the names are written in invisible ink.

user-pic

Do you think rendition would get him to talk?

Maybe fly him to Mississippi and get him a low-wage job?

user-pic

No, onto a soon to be melting glacier. Science like his makes me so relieved the grown-ups are in charge now.

user-pic

Well maybe we should see what Fred is willing to bet that he is right.

I say if he has proof that he is right within 10 years Al Gore has to enter a monastery. If the opposite is true, he has to take his own life.

user-pic
user-pic

Best John Cleese gag ever.

Nice site. Mark Sanford is smart? How can we even argue with you people?

user-pic

Hey I hear smoking does not cause cancer. Just ask any "scientist" working for the tobacco industry.

I'd rather be a Gore-bot than a Whore-bot.

user-pic

Of course I could be wrong about all this. Just look at the US auto industry. They said forcing them to install seatbelts in every vehicle would ruin the industry.

user-pic

Newsflash: Fred Barnes is an idiot. Paying any attention to anything he says is an utter waste of time.

user-pic

There is actually plenty of reason to believe we are overestimating the human impact on climate change. Read this letter from Dr. William Gray (he is a pretty big name, every spring me makes predictions for the summer hurricane season and is featured in big media outlets because of this):
http://icecap.us/images/uploads/On_The_Hijacking_of_the_American_Meteorological_Society.pdf

The last few pages, he goes off on a ridiculous political tangent that is probably worth ignoring, but I agree with his analysis. I'm a liberal who is in favor of reducing our use of fossil fuels more as a national security measure than because of their supposed impact on climate.

user-pic

If human impacts have brought us to the point of methane release from sea and lake beds, and permafrost zones, we are almost certainly underestimating them.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oa3M4ou3kvw

user-pic

No, that is utterly wrong. William Gray is clueless re: global warming. For details and specifics see http://www.realclimate.org/index.php/archives/2006/04/gray-on-agw/langswitch_lang/sp

Furthermore, there are literally thousands of climate scientists (Gray is not one) around the world who agree that without the contribution of greenhouse gases since the mid 1970s, the global warming trend can not be explained. Every major climate science society across the world including the National Academy of Sciences, the American Meteorological Society, and the Royal Meteorological Society to name just a few agrees on this fact. The scientific debate is long over over the trend in the last 30+ years is over. Science debate is conducted through peer-reviewed scientific journals and conferences, not the pages of the Wall St. Journal or other magazine or web sites.

The idea that one man (Gray) has discovered or knows something that literally thousands of climate science researchers across the world do not is the height of scientific arrogance. The data are unequivocal. Gray is fundamentally wrong and should not receive any attention for his deluded ideas re: global warming. Again, see the Real Climate link. That is written by actual climate scientists.

user-pic

2,000 scientists world wide disagree with you. You guys that keep writing this stuff are the only reason a craniotomy would involve a proctologist.

user-pic

The way to rebut Republicans is the way they understand : mock them; hoot them down; heap scorn on them.

In this case, they are too stupid to understand science.

Barnes should go back to undergraduate school for some Chemistry and Physics. His refutations are based on disingenuous crackpots, fake results and paid-off shills.

Bought-and-paid-for liars like Barnes deserve no serious response. Who is his paymaster, Exxon ?

user-pic

Bought-and-paid-for liars like Barnes deserve no serious response. Who is his paymaster, Exxon?

Even worse, Rupert Murdoch.

user-pic

Throw in Economics 101 at the same time. Or could he handle a course load like that?

user-pic

I cannot spread this enough. Please send to every idiot who believes global warming is not man made. You know what? - they don't even have to believe it to understand that we must do what we can to prevent the worst.

How It All Ends :)

My favorite line:

Who is going to care if someone is burning the flag on the courthouse lawn if the whole city is flooded.

user-pic

Those who are amazed that a flag could be burned on the courhouse lawn while the lawn is flooded.

user-pic

And to think he spouts this gibberish when the rest of us in the Thinking World are paying homage to Darwin on his 200th birthday.

Wonder if Freddie is one of those who also believes dinosaur fossils were put here by god in order to "test our faith"?

user-pic

I actually once knew someone who believed that. We didn't remain on good terms for long.

user-pic

Ah, the scientific literary stylings of Viscount Lord Monckton. I trust you'll pardon me whilst I ensconce myself upon the couch with a fermented beverage in hand to ponder the wit I find on the television set.
(translation - I think I'll have a beer and watch My name is Earl instead.)

user-pic

Why can't the right deliver us some non-blithering-idiots for opponents? Also, can't his family have a talk with him? We've got a neo-con in our family, and over the years he's become quite chastened.

The reason we've had a couple of cold winters is the polar icecap melted, changing the jetstream. this is *not* a good thing.

All kidding aside, Barnes' willful stupidity is tantamount to mass murder.

user-pic

When have they had any? Screaming "Mine, mine, mine, not yours, not yours, not yours!" Doesn't take a hell of a lot of mental acuity.

user-pic

It's more of the short-term mentality that has wrecked our economy. According to "conservatives" like Barnes, it doesn't matter if the average global temperature is rising every year. We're having a cold winter this year, so the planet isn't warming up.

user-pic

Actually, as noted above, the cooler winters are the very sign of global warming.

user-pic

"Haven't you noticed it's cooler?"

Fred Barnes jumped up while inside a free-falling elevator, and said "see!, we're not falling!"

user-pic

Extra Bonus Observation : Exxon has a lot of excellent scientists and engineers.

The discovery of sea level variability was developed at that company years ago - it is a crucial idea in the search for oil and gas.

So why does that company also fund fake science - for example the kind Dunderpate Barnes would shout about ? Because they want to gull the rubes !! They know there is a low enough level of understanding in the public to get away with their promotion of false science.

SOPHISTRY is the word for this ... they KNOW they are lying deliberately.

In the UK, the head of the Royal Society wrote Exxon a public letter about this and embarrassed them hugely.

In the USA, every man is free to choose his own facts.

user-pic

Remember George Costanza's motto...

It's not a lie...if YOU believe it.

user-pic

"I call it as I see it and if I don't see it, I make it up.
-Biff Barf, AKA George Carlin

user-pic

{Feigning Republican outrage} Fred Barnes has a right to be stupid. He has freedom of speech, and if there are publicantions who feel his opinion should be shouted form the rooftops, that is their right too! It does not matter that he has no epxertise whatsoever in climate science or even meteorolgy, he would make a great weatherman on TV. He aleady has the suit and tie.

You liberals, all hippied out, are all part of a vast conspiracy with those nerds in the science community to tear down big business which is why are country is great. Yeah, I said it, big business made our country great. It's wasn't some rag tag bunch of guys camping out in Valley Forge ... oh wait a minute .. yeah it was. I mean, it wasn't a bunch of sthnic cross-dressers dumping the product of the British American Company into a bay that made ... this ... ummm. Well, it's not like they were from Boston ... oh shit ... flaming out here ... this is BS and Fred Barnes is full of it!!!

user-pic

I am by no means defending Mr. Barnes, he is an idiot.

But, judging by some of the comments here, the topic of "Global Warming" seems to be approaching the same plateau as abortion. There is no longer any legitimate discussion occuring. You are either a believer, or a non-believer. Anyone in the middle is shunned by both sides.

My own opinion has changed as more evidence has come in, I was skeptical, but now agree that it is happening. Global Warming is occuring, and man may be causing it to be occuring at a much more rapid rate than nature. However, the earth is coming out of an Ice Age, so warming is going to happen whether we burn gasoline or not. I think there is a global hysteria occuring which is paralyzing the action which is needed; which is moving coastal communities inland over the next 50 years or so.

We can't stop global warming, we just have to adapt and live with it. Change is inevitable.

Here is a graph Al Gore forgot to put in his movie: http://www.scotese.com/images/globaltemp.jpg

user-pic

user-pic

"I am by no means defending Mr. Barnes, he is an idiot.
......... Anyone in the middle is shunned by both sides."

You are nowhere near the middle.

....We can't stop global warming, we just have to adapt and live with it. Change is inevitable.....

This is very bad science. BTW you are agreeing with Mr. Barnes. Nice try buddy

user-pic

"This is very bad science." - drubs

Bad science? I stand corrected by your unassailable logic.

Thanks for proving my point.

user-pic

Dude, we are not coming after you because you hold a differning opinion. We object to the lack of factual support you have for your opinion. Then, I personally resent your loser's attitude that we can do nothing about it. Better to die like a man then live like a chicken is an old Russian proverb, so let's do something about it.

Go plant a couple of trees ... hurry!!! You'll feel better for not taking such a defeatist attitude and can tell others to do the same.

user-pic

"I stand corrected by your unassailable logic. "

Thank You. Certainly more unassailable than saying one disagrees with something while simultaneously agreeing with it.

"...We can't stop global warming, we just have to adapt and live with it. Change is inevitable....."

Both you and Barnes need to provide a better argument than "we say so". Sheesh

user-pic

Why is it all of these Republicans end up sounding like the dorky guys from high school. The ones who would never use logic in arguments, but constantly threw out "I know you are, but what am I?" responses. They never bring discourse to a level of maturity that it deserves. They hide behind their bitter smiles and simplistic thinking. They never accomplished anything in high school and it shaped their lives. They're still those dorky guys congregating in the hallway in the high belted high water pants. They were irrelevant then and they're irrelevant now.

Seriously Fred, get a real job and an education.

user-pic

Hey, Lay off the high-water pants jokes. In a few decades they will be very popular in many coastal areas.

user-pic

"I'm not going to do your research for you,..."

Dumb-code for "I just made that up, sucker!"

user-pic

Mr. Barnes most scientist agree you're a an asshole.

Don't believe me? Look it up.

user-pic

I suspect that Mr. Barnes is actually just getting lazy and making things up b/c he know as exec. ed. of the Weekly Standard, he's not going to be rigorously fact-checked. His comment about calling state treasurers rings pretty false: at least two of those states are imposing unilateral spending cuts b/c of budget shortfalls. Seems unlikely those treasurers would say they didn't need the money, but who is going to call and check up on Mr. Barnes' claim that they did? TPM Muckraker, perhaps?

user-pic

Look it's not only Barnes,David Schuster of MSNBC had some nutcase from Hoover institute on his show last week claiming that liberals are beginning to question global warming, climate change & Al Gore is being exposed as a fraud. No follow up questions just some right wing hack saying what he feels like & the liberal voices he mentions are not Americans, they are all folks in France & elsewhere in Europe.Funny how the Repukes berate France & then embrace France when it's something that seems to bolster their point.I just don't remember the name of the guy Schuster had on but he is an African American working for Hoover & it was not Sowell.

user-pic

This guy is a friggin' muppet!
He's whining about Obama fear-mongering? What a hypocrite! The repukes are the KINGS of fear-mongering. Hell, they've won elections based on fear-mongering.
What a complete fuckwit!

user-pic

Hope you're not referring to Bush's elections. Not won, either one.

user-pic

"it's been cold lately."

Someone should remind Fred that it's only cold in certain parts of the northern hemisphere. The folks suffering through the fires in 115 degree F heat in Australia would probably differ with Fred about it being "cold lately".

Or, perhaps, the reporter should have said, "Yeah, what does that prove? It'll be hotter, too, in a few months."

Someone should also teach Fred the difference between weather and climate. Better yet, just ignore him. We've all already wasted too much time and effort on this.

user-pic

What I want to know is why Barnes, a God-fearing Christian, hates Christ, and God, so much, that he wishes to destroy His creations?

user-pic

"At first, he cited the fact that it's been cold lately."
Yeah, just like it's really cold in Australia right now, 'cause it's still winter there too!

user-pic

The unending spew that comes out of Barnes is completely predictable. He is a Rove-Robot.

What you'll never see when he comes on Fixed Noise is that there is a HUGE socket in the middle of his back where the wind-up key goes.... General rule of Barnes: Feed him some KoolAide from Turdblossom, wind him up for a 30 minute segment and place in the chair with restraints..Pof !! Instant NeoCon...

Barnes is a hack from way back..he should stay 'way back'...reality hurts sometimes...teehee...

user-pic

Whenever a we in the northeast get an Alberta Clipper rushing in single digit temperatures (they get converted to Fahrenheit when they cross the border), I remind myself that way up north there is warm air from the south is pushing the cold air oot.

user-pic

this man is going to continue the politically correct (as far as Republicans are concerned) stand using the words global warming. he and all the rest, including Mr. Gore, need to correct themselves and use the proper term - climate change.

i believe that the term global warming was invented to cover up the larger problem that the warming involving the ozone layer was going to cause climate changes. hence, Parker's citing that there has been cold weather proves the argument against what he is saying. weather patterns have become unpredictable compared to previous records; the winters in some places have become milder; and winter in other places have, well, had winter when they never did before.

instead of looking for the heat, he and others need to be looking at the overall picture.
