Jindal Admits Katrina Story Was False

Looks like the game is up.

Remember that story Bobby Jindal told in his big speech Tuesday night -- about how during Katrina, he stood shoulder-to-shoulder with a local sheriff who was battling government red tape to try to rescue stranded victims?

Turns out it wasn't actually, you know, true.

In the last few days, first Daily Kos, and then TPMmuckraker, raised serious questions about the story, based in part on the fact that no news reports we could find place Jindal in the affected area at the specific time at issue.

Jindal had described being in the office of Sheriff Harry Lee "during Katrina," and hearing him yelling into the phone at a government bureaucrat who was refusing to let him send volunteer boats out to rescue stranded storm victims, because they didn't have the necessary permits. Jindal said he told Lee, "that's ridiculous," prompting Lee to tell the bureaucrat that the rescue effort would go ahead and he or she could arrest both Lee and Jindal.

But now, a Jindal spokeswoman has admitted to Politico that in reality, Jindal overheard Lee talking about the episode to someone else by phone "days later." The spokeswoman said she thought Lee, who died in 2007, was being interviewed about the incident at the time.

This is no minor difference. Jindal's presence in Lee's office during the crisis itself was a key element of the story's intended appeal, putting him at the center of the action during the maelstrom. Just as important, Jindal implied that his support for the sheriff helped ensure the rescue went ahead. But it turns out Jindal wasn't there at the key moment, and played no role in making the rescue happen.

There's a larger point here, though. The central anecdote of the GOP's prime-time response to President Obama's speech, intended to illustrate the threat of excessive government regulation, turns out to have been made up.

Maybe it's time to rethink the premise.

Late Update: Politico's Ben Smith has updated his post with the following:

UPDATE: I'd initially misunderstood Sellers to be saying Jindal and Lee didn't meet while rescue efforts were still underway. In fact, she said, the conversation took place in the aftermath of the storm, but after the boat incident.

"Bobby and I walked into harry lee's office - he's yelling on the phone about a decision he's already made," Jindal chief of staff Timmy Teepell recalled. "He's saying this is a decision I made, and if you don't like it you can come and arrest me."

Teepell said the exchange took place in the week following Katrina, when Jindal visited Jefferson Parish multiple times.

"He was boots on the ground all the time," he said.

This doesn't seem to bear on the key question. As we said, the key elements of Jindal's story were that he was in Lee's office during the crisis itself, and that his support for the sheriff helped ensure the rescue went ahead. Neither of those things was true, it now seems.

Late Video Update: Here's the relevant section of Jindal's speech.

Late Late Update: Hilariously, Jindal's office keeps going back to Politico to try to straighten out its story, but it's only digging itself in deeper.

Oh. My. God. Jindal and Steele. What a flaming trainwreck the new Repuglican "leadership"is turning out to be. Well, please grab me another beer from the frig and pass the popcorn - this is just a blast!

user-pic

Just as long as it isn't that magnetic levitation train that's set to run between LA and Vegas!

Oh, what's that? That story's been debunked, too?

Never mind.

PEACE

No Republican ever said....

there were WMDs in Iraq..
there is Money for a train from LA to LV..
there is Money for a marsh mouse in the stimulus...
They want Obama to fail..

What are you talking about. Trust me, we never said it... thats a damn lie....

user-pic

This really is amazing. Better than any hollywood screenplay in the last 20 years. You really just can't make this stuff up. It would be labeled as too unrealistic if you tried, but it's all true. Amazing.

user-pic

I think Republicans are going to be revolting. Like you, they may have a drink while considering this but it might not be beer and there won't be any celebratory popcorn.

user-pic

You're right! Republicans ARE revolting, they make me want to throw up!

user-pic

perhaps you've got that bad intestinal virus that's going around..

user-pic

Your username says it all!

user-pic

Whoah, big fella. Give the guy time to recover from THAT one.

user-pic

Jindal, Steele, Pelousy, WrEED. Idiots all.

user-pic

Oops! You caught me! My Bad!
But it COULD have happened!
Look at that shiny object over there!
-Bobby Jindal

user-pic

It's alright. You be da man! You be da man!!

user-pic

"All da mothers in da house, put yo hands up!
All da plumbers in da house, pull yo pants up!
All da liars in da house, yo! the sham's up!
It's da hip-hop G-O-P,

It's off the hook, still on the chains,
We buy our nook, ain't got no brains.

"Ditto!"
"Head!"

user-pic

I registered just to let you know: you win the Internet.

user-pic

Shiny? Where?

You mean that thing next to the WMDs?

user-pic

And who can ever forget the hail of sniper fire he dodged to get to the sheriff's office.
All hail Piyush Jindal!

user-pic

Oh SNAP! That's, like, off the HOOK, yo!

user-pic

Well I am actually more curious as to whether any of the story is accurate. Conservatives like to tell stories about how bureaucracy gets in the way of common sense but usually when you scrutinize these stories more closely they tend to fall apart pretty quickly. Was there a bureaucracy attempting to obstruct rescue efforts over permit issues? I am not saying that I have never had any experience with Kafkaesque types of bureaucratic b.s. but that story sounds more than a little questionable to me.

user-pic

The boats were prevented from rescue attempts because some lacked necessary life preservers and appropriate equipment.

user-pic

now that's entirely plausible. frankly, it's rather foolish to push back on an issue like that no matter how dire the situation. first, rescuers can be become victims in the blink of an eye, further taxing overburdened responders. second, volunteers become the jurisdiction's responsibility and their actions become the jurisdiction's actions. tricky lessons that are taught over and over again but are rarely learned.

user-pic

I share your skepticism. The attribution to nameless "bureaucrats" is usually a dead giveaway -- you would think it would be easy to say that it was FEMA, or some other agency, if it really was them.

user-pic
Was there a bureaucracy attempting to obstruct rescue efforts over permit issues?
One story circulating at the time was that volunteer rescue boats were delayed to await a photo op with Dubya. I would like to hear the truth of that allegation.
user-pic

hmm. it can't be both ways. Was George ignoring the Katrina crisis or was he in New Orleans for a photo op?

user-pic

Bush was doing both.

user-pic

I continue to suspect that something more akin to an executive order held up rescue efforts during the Repugnican windfall we call Katrina.

user-pic

Your comment has raised some interesting responses. Much as I love the comedy value of the story - it seems like Jindal has still succeeded in moving the goal posts - because isn't it Bush and his cronies etc., lack of investment, couldn't give a sh*tism that caused the disaster in the first place?
A Republican using the example of Katrina to disparage government (bureaucracy) is like.....

no - after 5 mins of racking my brains I can't come up with an analogous hypocrisy.

Any ideas?

user-pic

It's like Bill Clinton pointing out all of the interns that he didn't have sex with, in his defense.

user-pic

He didn't need a defense against having sex with an intern (except with Hillary), MONICA WAS OF AGE. Had Bill had the common sense to say originally "Yep, sorry, had sex with a 24 year-old intern. It felt good, too. Sorry!" Every subsequent caterwaul fromt the Republicans would have come to bupkis.

user-pic

i've worked on disaster relief operations on and off for over ten years, and that part of the story gave me pause as well. i could see a local jurisdiction being told an rescue operation was unsafe or that the county would have to clarify liability issues before moving forward, but "permits" just sounds weird. there are any number of jurisdictional wrangles than can and do go on during operations. most counties have some type of urban/wilderness search and rescue teams and write them into their plans. but even when improvising there is usually some leeway cut and there's always the old "do it and apologize later" stuff that goes on.

user-pic

Whoa, wait a minute. The story is a lie, but even if it wasn't, Sheriff Harry Lee was a complete racist ass**le. Sheriff Lee wasn't busting his butt to save people. In fact he had his officers on the bridges out of New Orleans stopping evacuees from escaping out into the more affluent suburbs. If there was a phone call days later, it was probably Lee trying to cover his butt.

Check it out, there is even video. This is the jerk that Jindal supported:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qSsgwajStCo

user-pic

According to Sheriff Harry Lee he had more of a duty to protect the empty homes of those who had the means to escape than to protect human life.

In this vid Harry Lee was upset that Karen Carter spoke out about this outrage. Karen was running for congress against Bill (money in the freezer) Jefferson. Obviously Jefferson won.

(In an interesting side note. Bill Clinton was close with both Harry Lee and Bill Jefferson)

user-pic

How truthie.

user-pic

Indeed, a textbook example of truthiness. Next stop, Stephen Colbert!

user-pic

Good one! Ha-ha!

user-pic

Buh-bye, Buh-bie!

user-pic

Hey, don't hate on Bobby. He's just following in the grand Reagan Republican tradition of fabricating anecdotes to make a political point. Ronnie made 'em up all the time, from Welfare Queens With Cadillacs, to trees causing pollution, to scenes from old movies he recounted as though they had actually happened.

user-pic

Maybe the Sheriff appeared during an exorcising Bobby was conducting and he just got confused as to the date and place.

user-pic

Exactly. It's a simple case of source misinformation. A routine and normal memory failure.

user-pic

THE POWER OF CHRIST COMPELLED HIM to tell a lie.

WORD

user-pic

Sheriff Lee was interviewed on LARRY KING about the incident and said that a week after Katrina he learned some boats hadn't been allowed due to both a lack of FLOTATION DEVICES and insurance. http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0509/11/lkl.01.html The GOP seldoms lets facts get in the way of a story... but then this one was critical of a republican president's team so kinda silly anyway.

user-pic

Jindal was a Rhodes scholar, which is evidence that to become a Republican honcho one must submit to a lobotomy. He also worked at McKinsey & Company, which extolled Enron as a model company and was cited in BusinessWeek, among others, as an unindicted co-conspirator in the Enron criminal enterprise.

user-pic

This is why we need a copy of the Ten Commandments in all government buildings. If it'd been there when he was about to bear some false witness against his neighbors (in this case, his neighborhood gov't bureaucrats) he could have just looked up, said, "My Bad", and said something else.

user-pic

Good thought but wouldn't work.
Republicans don't read that stuff.
They only preach it and try to force it on others.

user-pic

SICK BURN!

user-pic

Like Rachel Maddow, I'm truly speechless. How could this supposedly brilliant Rhodes scholar be so utterly stupid? Did he really think he wasn't going to get called out on that story? Has he ever heard of the internet?

I'd say this GOP star has just flamed out for good. I don't see how he'll ever recover from this. Hello Romney '12.

user-pic

Scumdog millioniare

user-pic

So, if I have this right, one senator from LA was convicted of paying hookers to engage in diaper-play with him; the other one changed his name from Piyush to "Bobby" because of the Brady Bunch, and now he's just makin' wild stuff up on national TeeVee, while in the wings there's a porn star and a Christian Rightist waitin' to swoop in.
Here's the question: why in the world are we watchin' fat people lose pounds on TV when we could be watchin "Louisiana: The Reality Show"?

user-pic

It don't get any better'n this, my friend!

user-pic

doesn't, please. Do you have any milk?
-just kidding, sort of.

user-pic

Time to bring in stormy to storm through the mess and clean the place up. Stormy Daniels in 2010.

user-pic

Thank for that, Michael. And I wish they'd stop referring to Stormy Daniels as a PORN STAR! She is a candidate for the United States Senate, by gum, and she deserves our reverent support!

user-pic

You b da man, Bobby!

user-pic

He's just another prop like Joe the Plumber; Sarah the Maverick; Steele the Steely; George the Bush; ad nauseum.

Until honest, competent, non-Empirical, libertarian, small gov't, socially progressive, non-evangelical types of Republicans take back the Party, the GOP should get used to the wilderness.

user-pic

If the American people can't trust him, how can his wife?

user-pic

Good Lord. Who handles PR for the Republican Party - Alex Rodriguez?!?!?!

user-pic

I'm beginning to think so.

user-pic

Why do FEMA and natural disasters inspire so many faulty memories? Al Gore misspoke when he said he'd visited the Texas wildfires with FEMA director James Lee Witt.

user-pic

Wow, nice work getting that dig in there. I hope you didn't sprain anything stretching like that.

Funny thing is under Witt FEMA actually worked. Put a Brownie in there and bam everything goes to hell.

user-pic

Yeah, Henk's right to give you troll credit. Excellent little diversionary OT snark of irrelevance.

user-pic

Nice going Piyush. You are just what the Republican Party needs for their future, a lair with no new ideas. With a name like Piyush and the look of a Muslim I wonder why the republicans choose this guy as the future of their party. They seemed to get their nuts in a twit over Obama’s name and background. Lies by the way.

user-pic

OMG. So funny..., the tears are just rolling down. But I can't figure if it's from the plain ridiculousness or the tragedy. These are supposed to be the leaders? Of what? How can this be?

user-pic

If you watch and listen to it again, you might catch that he starts off with "Let me tell you a story..."

See, it's not a lie, it's just a story!

Night night.

user-pic

Wanna bet the MSM totally ignore this story because they get their marching orders from Limbaugh and Drudge who would NEVER mention this EVER. So far not a peep on cable news

user-pic

Oh, it's on cable news. Keith Olbermann on MSNBC boiled Jindal's ass good. I don't know how it's played on Fox though.

user-pic

A Rhodes Scholar? Louisiana's "best and brightest"? Maybe it's time to appoint a federal receiver or master to run the state. Lame lame lame.

user-pic

Haven't these people figured out by now that there is an internet out there with people who are able to fact check these ridiculous stories. One would think that in 2009 they would know better but I guess the stupidity or hubris won't allow them to realize this.

BTW, I guess this may put to shame those pundits that remarked that the content of Gov. Jindal's response was good but that the delivery was poor.

user-pic

They are still operating in the 1980s, when Reagan was King and the internet was a gleam in Al Gore's eye.

user-pic

Will this get any coverage in the mainstream media? I haven't found any yet. You know that, were Bobby Jindal a Democrat, this would be an instant headline.

user-pic

Wake up! The media despises conservatives and this will surely become front page news. Where have you been hiding?

user-pic

Snark?

Or self-parody?

Or rank idiocy?

You be the judge.

user-pic

So you suggest Jindal should be "given" this one, because he's a conservative? If any Democrat had made up such a story, they'd have been kicked around in the same media. Wake up and stop being so partisan, even to the choice of your handle. Politics isn't like rooting for your favorite sports team, or at least it shouldn't be.

user-pic

Jesus, are you slow.

user-pic

Ah, yes. This is the future of the Republican Party - their knight in shining armor who will lead them back into power. HaHaHaHa.

user-pic

You know. . . I'm curious. . . wing-nuts made a big stink about Obama using various names growing up (most famously "Barry Soetero"), how do they feel about "Bobby" (ne: Piyush) Jindal using a name that isn't his real name?

user-pic

Article says:

"The central anecdote of the GOP's prime-time response to President Obama's speech, intended to illustrate the threat of excessive government regulation, turns out to have been made up."

What I love about this is that, even within that frame, they blew it. Because in the tale, the noble, plucky sheriff is also... d'oh! A government employee.

Can these guys get anything right? I mean besides graft...

user-pic

The jig is up. Maybe the G.O.P. is NOT jiggy wid it!

user-pic

First Jindal puts himself into "The Exorcist" and now he thinks he's in a disaster movie. This is not a stable guy. Also, what's with him, religion, and women?

user-pic

Until honest, competent, non-Empirical, libertarian, small gov't, socially progressive, non-evangelical types of Republicans take back the Party, the GOP should get used to the wilderness

One speech by President Eisenhower is enough to create an entire GOP that never existed? Wow!

user-pic

A republicrant who lies!
I'm SHOCKED, absolutely shocked!
Round up the usual suspects including this Piyush guy...

user-pic

"I did not have sexual relations with that woman"

user-pic

Republicans lying shouldn't be news to anyone! When he was telling the story it looked like as lying!

user-pic

Was there some of that famous NOLSA sniper fire at the time? That was debunked, too.

user-pic

Look, Jindal just completely made up the name "Bobby" for himself. He just pulled the name out of his ass. It's really no surprise that he would make up stories about himself as well. The guy is living in a fantasy world filled with falsehoods.

user-pic

He just pulled the name out of his ass

No, it's worse. He was invoking the American Dream, as manifested by the Brady Bunch, specifically, one "Bobby Brady".

user-pic

Not that I don't enjoy seeing Jindal put through the wringer, nor do I mean to suggest he is an honest politician, but perhaps he is a victim of idiom here. While Hurricane Katrina struck on one particular day, the "crisis itself" (also known as the failure of the federal levees and the subsequent inundation) was a calamity that ensued for many days. Locally, it is utterly commonplace for people to use the phrase "during Katrina" when describing their experiences of those long days and nights that all bled together. The extended period of time during which events occurred is one of the most remarkable aspects of the disaster.

user-pic

The article explains that. It also explains that the issue was that Jindal lied about being in the office when the sheriff was supposedly having trouble getting boats sent out.

user-pic

It is fairly obvious that he was reading the text from a teleprompter. Not so sure he wrote it (all) himself. More likely he was selected by the Party to read their response to Obama; doubt if anyone else would do it willingly. Why didn't they select a Senator or Congressman if one had been willing? So give the poor guy a break.

user-pic

The delicious kicker to this story is where Jindal went to hide-out after his flame-out performance:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mark-nickolas/after-lying-about-high-sp_b_169892.html

DISNEYLAND!

user-pic

Give the poor guy a break? For what?
He read the speech prior to airtime, it wasn't like he just went before the camera and spoke these lines for the first time without any rehearsal. He knew exactly what he was going to say, and the blame lies with him 100%. No one forced him to say any of this.

This is insult to injury as the speech by itself and the delivery were both achingly bad, now he has to backtrack the intended folksy platitude.

Misremember much, Bobby?

user-pic

The Legend of Bobby J and Harry 'Lighthorse' Lee.

Bobby says there is a lesson to be learned, that govt. cannot solve our problems, just heroic americans. No, but govt. can sure conspire with spineless three-piece-suit types to drain our treasury into their pockets, leaving us all destitute. Govt. is OK for that.
I'm sure the GOP would love to see the govt. dismantled so all us heroic americans can just make it up as we go along.

See, Piyush got to yammer all this crap on live MainStream Corporate Media, and as usual all the debunking and outright lying get's exposed on the alternative Internet press. Bullseye! All the misinformed consumers of Corporate Pablum got the first message, and only the cynical elite liberals got to hear how it was all made up. Mission accomplished.

user-pic

Mr. Bobby Jindal seems to be a very nice guy with lots of ambition but may not be a capable politician. He should read the books written by Mahadma Gandhi. This may help his brain development.

user-pic

So, so subcontinentally consistent. Graduate schools everywhere in the U.S. have been very distrusting of Indian applicants - the quality and achievements of their college records is often highly exaggerated and outrightly falsified. American companies have bitterly learned in recent years of the wide-spread faking of programming and engineering backgrounds and resumes from Bangladore and Mumbai, resulting in significant declines in Indian technical hiring.

And thus it has now carried over to politics - a boldfaced public lie by Jindal right at the start of his politcal career ...

user-pic

Somebody needs to go to confession...

user-pic

That's why I could never become a priest. I could never control my laughter.

user-pic

If true, the story was stooopid and illustrated nothing. The point was that people solved problems, not the government, right. The sherriff solved it, being a person, according to the fabricated story. Wait a minute, though, the sherriff is the government. So the government did solve the problem after all, even in this jejune fable. The discredited fable that Jindal claimed he was a participant in.

user-pic

We should "bind him" (in a camisole just in case the spiritual rope doesn't hold) and ship him to the Vatican for exorcism.

user-pic

The GOP's best and brightest....voodoo Bobby Jindahl, nanookie of the north Sarah Palin, Michele "you da man" Bachmann and "da man" himself Michael Steele. None of these laugably ridiculous pretenders are even capable liars let alone capable of leadership. Those who would follow folks like these four wannabees must be desdendants of the rats who followed the Pied Piper of Hamlin into the the Weser river. Is it possible that they are all Democratic moles deliberately trying to destroy the Republican Party from within? Or is the Republican Party so thoroughly clueless and dumbed-down that they really are the best and brightest today's GOP has to offer?

user-pic

Jindal what an asshole.

user-pic

Does this mean BJ qualifies for backup secretary of state?

user-pic

Beavis says to Butthead:

"BJ... heh, heh, heh... you said BJ... heh heh heh!"

user-pic

You know, I hate to pile on and I'm actually interested in moving on to supporting the candidacy of adult actress Daniels, but briefly, there's something else fucked up here, too.

He made this big spiel about the old Louisiana politics is gone and it's a total new day down there -- total transparency. Then he gets up and lies through his teeth for his central story! Now, Reagan used to tell ridiculous right wing fairy tales to no end, say some lonely, cancer-stricken working mother solves all her problems by just letting the market decide, but he had the out that at least some had fed him the fabricated accounts so maybe he didn't know of their (persistent) falsity. HERE,though, the savior of the party said on national TV that he was there *doing* this! He knowingly lied in his central anecdote, expecting millions to rely upon his intentional misrepresentation!

DOES THAT SOUND LIKE NEW POLITICS?! Would Hewey Long really have done differently? GOOD GRIEF!

user-pic

You people just don't understand. Bobby is a Christian and opponent of Womens' Right to Choose and evolution. Therefore, everything he says is the truth and everything you atheist unAmercians say is false. End of discussion. Republican(Idiotic) Logic!

Praise Jesus. Sarah and Bobby 08! (Yah, I know its 09, but the Bible is never wrong. If Jesus said it, I believe it.) Ignorance is Bliss!

user-pic

Bobby who? Sarah who? GOP who? But I did read someplace where someone at the CPAC - where they gave Flush Limpdick a prize, said "Conservaties may take to the streets over Obama tax and spending (paraphrased)."

I say, "bring 'em on... you betcha'..."

user-pic

There is something in this story that reminds me of the unpleasant image of a wounded animal, helpless and dying, who just bites itself.

user-pic
user-pic

Whoa, slow down people. You're gonna trip over yourselves. Ben Smith's update shows that Jindal's story was accurate. The "inaccurate" part is that his story fails to live up to what TPM interprets as the moral of the story, or what was between the lines. Calm down, the GOP can be defeated on their own merits.

user-pic

If you listen carefully to the words you'll notice that it's not a lie. However it is very misleading. "'Jindal is here and he says you can arrest him too.' Harry told those boaters to ignore the bureaucrats go start rescuing people." He doesn't say that the second sentence describes an event that occurred after the phone call, but it sure does sound like that the way he structured the story.

user-pic

Okay look, you can parse the sentences of the speech and say that he didn't ACTUALLY say that he was ACTUALLY there when the sheriff was screaming into the phone, BUT, the bottom line is that he purposely misled viewers during his speech to make it sound like this whole event happened with him right there. Whatever metric you use, that qualifies as lying!

He made the whole thing up and that, to me, is ASTOUNDING. It probably shouldn't be at this point since politicians have been lying and getting away with it for a long time but still, to knowingly express such a falsehood live on national tv and to think it was okay, what a dumbass!

user-pic

Yup. Looks like it's not just democrats who lie, stretch the truth, or "mis-speak". Not a big surprise.

user-pic

Republican trainwreck is absolutely right - the kind of spectacle that you want to divert your eyes from, but just can't. Perhaps Jindal just trying to be more like Palin?

Here's another one:

Whets the difference between Bobby Jindal and Zack Roth?

Jindal didn’t get fired from the NY Observer because he couldn’t hack semi-serious gig.

Rumor has it that Roth cried like a bitch when he got his pink slip.

user-pic

Anyone who says that they have never met a republican they did not like, has never met one!

user-pic

I seem to be the first one at Redstates to debunk this story. I don't know why no one else does. Makes no sense to let the crazies have the floor uncontested.

All you have to do is quote Jindal's speech verbatim which is on Ben Smith's site and contrast that with the hemming and hawing we're now.

My post at Redstates:

Jindal’s own spokesperson admitted the story is a lie.

Here’s what Jindal said in his speech:

During Katrina, I visited Sheriff Harry Lee, a Democrat and a good friend of mine. When I walked into his makeshift office I’d never seen him so angry. He was yelling into the phone: ‘Well, I’m the Sheriff and if you don’t like it you can come and arrest me!’ I asked him: ‘Sheriff, what’s got you so mad?’ He told me that he had put out a call for volunteers to come with their boats to rescue people who were trapped on their rooftops by the floodwaters. The boats were all lined up ready to go - when some bureaucrat showed up and told them they couldn’t go out on the water unless they had proof of insurance and registration. I told him, ‘Sheriff, that’s ridiculous.’ And before I knew it, he was yelling into the phone: ‘Congressman Jindal is here, and he says you can come and arrest him too!’

But now Jindal’s story is that he overheard Lee recalling the incident days later to an interviewer on the phone.

His anecdote in the speech was nonsense, a lie. He wasn’t in Lee’s office when Lee was screaming into a phone. Lee didn’t offer to let anyone arrest both he and Jindal.

user-pic

Good work Mark. I noticed that too and was about to post there. IT's worth it for others to go to that site and read the moral highroading coming from people who listened to and repeated lies from the Bushies for 8 years without so much as a peep.

They are all so hot to believe that good ol' boys cain't do no wrong that they just don't care for what really happened. I like the ones who say "well, even if it's not true he did a lot of good stuff after Katrina." And that has WHAT to do with a rebuttal speech??

user-pic

Ben Smith at Politico reported Piyush said

"When I walked into his makeshift office I'd never seen him so angry. He was yelling into the phone"

What Piyush actually said was

"When I walked into his makeshift office I'd never seen him so angry. He was LITERALLY yelling into the phone."

Literally, doesn't leave much wiggle room. Piyush didn't say I walked in to a makeshift office and literally overheard a two week old story being told by the sheriff. He lied.

user-pic

The republican party has become a cast of cartoon characters. I mean...how long will America keep taking these people seriously? The more they speak the more insane they all appear. This guy, Beck, Coulter, Limbaugh, Hannity...WTF? All down the list is nothing but cartoonish crazies. Its actually kinda frightening.

user-pic

You're right.
The GOP has become a Bizarro World Cartoon Network.
As Obama so wisely says - for our children's sake, it's time to turn off the TV.

user-pic

the timeline is still controversial, but Politico just posted a video of Lee talking with Jindal:
http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/

user-pic

BREAKING NEWS: Turns out the story regarding Bobby Jindal meeting with local sheriff was true afterall and has been confirmed by Michael Steele's sister, who catered the event from her defunct catering company!

But we'll always have those sniper bullets on the Tarmac in Kosovo...

user-pic

As a Democrat andresident of the state of Louisiana I initialy had high hopes for Mr Jindal when he became the govenor. That has since changed. As a typical Republican it's party first everything else at best comes second. Also typically Republican is the general use of inaccuracy in statements particularly ina national forum. False and misleading statements are heard on a national level to only be retracted in a less noticeably setting. So for the majority of those that heard the initial statement made by Mr. Jindal concerning his exploits during Katrina this misstatement is now a fact, however wrong it is. So it's business as usual with members of the Republican Party.

This is what's so important about a story such as the one on TPM regarding gang tattoo removal and the GOP crowing about "wasteful spending." Until the Democrats say at every opportunity "The American people must decide if they can trust a party that believes government to be the problem while running to do the governing," we are going to have to fend off GOP stupidity masking itself as argument.

Good governing is messy. It needs smart, committed people. It's not instantaneous. It needs open, national, informed debate. The Obama Admin needs to keep hold of its principles and continue to stubbornly resist compromise that is not in the interests of the best this country has to offer.

user-pic

Truth has a liberal bias. Republicans often have trouble with it.

user-pic

Hummm and for your guiding light you choose a President whose administration sat with stupid grins while people were dying in Kentucky during a severe snow storm.

You choose a President who lied to you, lied to the American people and continues to lie every day he sits in the Oval Office.

A President who after placing the country in bankruptcy holds a summit meeting to fight the deficit. Did you fools catch the rest of the country laughing at you?

Oh yes these guys want you fools to believe that next year the GDP will grow at a rate between 5 and 6%. No one with an IQ over 50 believes that. Then again that is why you fools believe it.

user-pic

Damn, JD has found out our secret plan to bankrupt the country, although even if we're successful we can't fuck things up as much as his hero Dubya.
Fuckin' muppets.

user-pic

What you ignorant kool-aid drinkers seem to be conveniently overlooking here is that the premise of JD's speech was that government let's red tape get in the way of common sense. You ignore the fact that the story itself is true. This article simply questions whether or not JD aws actually there when the initial converstion took place.Open your eyes and ears idiots, the article does not state that Lee's conversation never took place. It did. AND THAT WAS THE POINT-THE GOVERNMENT GETTING IN THE WAY-JD NEVER CLAIMED ANY HEROIC ACTS!!

user-pic

How can you tell when a Republican is lying?

Their lips are moving.

user-pic

Let's be impartial here: How can you tell when a POLITICIAN is lying?

Their lips are moving.

user-pic

I am a Democrat, so don't think that I am taking sides here, but it seems to ME that POLITICS in GENERAL seems to ATRACT people who are not particularly partial to the truth to BEGIN WITH. Are most of you people forgetting the little incident with the former First Lady? It seems that SHE had a problem with dodging imaginary BULLETS! Her HUSBAND had a problem with NOT having sexual encounters with women who were NOT married with him. There are PLENTY of occasions that can be laid at DEMOCRATIC FEET where the TRUTH was not exactly as it was stated. Our new president may have some problems with the truth, if the truth be told. He has made so many promises, that it would be IMPOSSIBLE to keep them all. If he DOES, he is going to have EVERYONE angry with him.

user-pic

thank you!

user-pic

Wow, this is almost as big as claiming to have taken sniper fire in Bosnia.

user-pic

More stupidity from the liberals. Churchill was correct. You guys are morons.

No paulie (with a very small p) no one believes you have a plan. A plan would mean you have a brain and you don't.

I digress having a discussion with liberals is the same as attempting a discussion with penny gumball machines. paulie (with a very small p) you are priceless, stupid but priceless.

Now go and pray to your altar for the messiah and sit in your mommy's basement waiting for the government to come and make a man of you.

user-pic

So deep. And it must be dark down there, too.

user-pic

Is anyone disputing these two parts of the story?

1 - [the Sheriff said]‘Well, I’m the Sheriff and if you don’t like it you can come and arrest me!’

AND

2 - [the Sheriff] put out a call for volunteers to come with their boats to rescue people who were trapped on their rooftops by the loodwaters. The boats were all lined up ready to go - when some bureaucrat showed up and told them they couldn’t go out on the water unless they had proof of insurance and registration.

Because if these parts are true (especially #2), then I don't have any problem with the story. It illustrates perfectly what happens in large government, and why large government should be avoided.

If these parts aren't true, then shame on Bobby.

But it is still true that large government should be avoided.

On a different topic, Why doesn't anyone ask how many "corporate jets" does the Federal Government "own, lease or otherwise use?"

user-pic

Bobby, we hardly knew ye

What bothers me most is so many people willing to overlook candidate Clinton's equally reckless fabrication of dodging bullets while deplaning in Bosnia. Weeks of urging by her handlers and she finally admits that she "misspoke". I never took her seriously as a candidate after that. On the subject of lying, the Republicans have continued to perpetuate one giant lie, that we need to prop up small businesses because they employ some 70 percent of us. The term SB connotes some benign ma and pa operation with a few loyal employees who are treated well. I believe far too many SB are close behind large corporations when it comes to treating employees like dogs, cheating them legally, firing them in cover-ups and other misdeeds.

user-pic

If Jindal comes out and says he merely made a "misstatement", will that make everything okay like it did for Hillary? "I remember landing under sniper fire. There was supposed to be some kind of a greeting ceremony at the airport, but instead we just ran with our heads down to get into the vehicles to get to our base..." Ah, to be a politician... The freedom to lie blatantly and never feel a moment's remorse. What a great life!

user-pic

The only thing worse than "being treated like a dog" by your employer, is not having a job.

Most small employers have to drive there employees hard in order to pay income taxes, social security taxes, unemployement taxes, workers comp insurance (etc., etc.) and still have enough money to pay the employee enough to pay income taxes, property taxes, sales taxes, gas taxes (etc., etc.).

user-pic

This guy thinks we're some kind of Piyush-overs or something.

user-pic

You know you're in trouble when the publicity surrounding a confession to a lie is a welcome distraction and more positive than that of your speeches.

user-pic

GOV. BOBBY JINDAL SHOULD RESIGN AS GOVERNOR OF LOUISIANA, IMMEDIATELY!!!

user-pic

Jindal is a little plastic CREEP. YUCK!

user-pic

Everybody's missing the real scandal here:

Jindal told the story because the main character isn't around to debunk it anymore. He's dead. Doesn't get much worse than that.

Stay classy, republicants.

user-pic

I am a life-long Republican. I hate politicians who "make up stories," "embellish stories", "modify stories," or whatever you want to call it. I think that most Americans appreciate being told the truth, without any fancy "spin" or modification. My experience has been that many liberals would not recognize the truth, even if they witnessed the event themselves or had indisputable photographic evidence presented to them, so falsifying a story is useless anyway. Conservatives have been lied to by RINO's for the last 4 years, and we are tired of it.
What the Republican party needs to do is tell the truth on a level that the average Joe, with a grade school education, can understand it. The liberal elite will twist the truth, or make up new "truths", so talking to them is a wasted effort. The average working man and woman have to understand how the policies of the current administration are bad for them, and will put their children in debt for their entire lives.

If this country is told the basic facts, and how liberals are saying one thing, but doing something completely different, then it is up to them to make the right choices. If the majority of the people in this country choose to ignore the facts and choose to "drink Obama's Kool-Aid", then shame on them, and we deserve the disaster that awaits us as a country. We need more leaders like Regan, who are not afraid to tell the people the truth, and clearly explain the choices that they have, and the consequences of those choices. Unfortunately, George Bush was a horrible speaker, who was not able to communicate clearly the consequences of the choices that the liberals wanted us to make in the last 4 years. He also was unable or unwilling to confront the many untruths or half-truths put out by his enemies.
In summary, what the Republicans need to do is find more leaders who are also good communicators, and who are not afraid to confront the distortions and outright lies promulgated by the current Democrat leaders in Washington.

user-pic

So, what you are really saying, Perseus 17, is that you hate it when Dems lie, but when Pugs lie it's perfectly fine. I take that from the fact that your post is full of lies. First, when Clinton left office, after 8 full years of those bad policies we had a surplus for the first time in decades. In fact...let's actually LOOK at the facts!, when Carter left office, the national debt was ONE trillion dollars. Remember REGAN's (sic)...it was Reagan, by the way..."million millions" speech? But then, after 16 years of Reaganomics, the national debt had quadrupled to $4 trillion (damn Democrats!). Then, of course, Clinton actually balanced the budget...without a single Pug vote...and started paying down the debt. But when W took office, he DOUBLED the national debt to over $11 trillion.

Now, tell me again how all of this is the Dem's fault? I'm waiting....still w a i t i n g.... Yeah, I thought so.

user-pic

A lying piece of garbage in the Neo-Republican Party?
Sounds like promotion time to me.

user-pic

It is good to see so much righteousness and outrage here. I am trying to find where you all demanded Hillary's/Bill's head on a platter for their NUMEROUS, well documented, self-serving lies....i can't seem to find those posts. fascinating. don't worry though: obama's going to end the Iraq debacle 6 months after he's elected! well, what he MEANT to say was 18 months.....

user-pic

Republican tells lie.
Dog bites man.
Give me a headline I can work with.

user-pic

Guys! Gals! This was a test and you flunked.
You didn't listen carefully.
He started out by saying, 'Let me tell you a story', he was just having some campfire fun. He never said it was true.
Whew! off the hook, now, where's his running mate Sarah when he needs her.

user-pic

Hey, isn't plagiarism somwhat like lying?

user-pic

Poor stupid liberals I do feel sorry for you boys and girls. You though you were electing a messiah and all you got was a lying political hack from Chicago who is quickly becoming the worse president in the history of this nation.

Obama is a liar and a fool. I do not blame you boys and girls for being so angry I would be angry if I had been had by such a hack. Obama is a liar.

Get that Obama is a liar and he has bankrupted the nation. GDP down 6.2% get that moron messiah supporters? He is killing the economy. Wall street and the world are dumping American stocks and converting everything to cash off shore.

Hello???? Anyone there? Hello???

user-pic

Bush got us into this mess, dumbass. You can't shrink the GDP by 6.2% by a month in office. The only people with cause to be angry about Obama's economic policies so far are Wall Street Fat Cats, and even them not very much.

user-pic

I think jdripper woke up from a coma some time shortly after Obama's inauguration, looked around, and figured the current President had to be to blame for what he saw.

user-pic

There is something in this story that reminds me of the unpleasant image of a wounded animal, helpless and dying, who just bites itself.

Wow...reading this board you would think that Hillary never dodged sniper fire or Bill "never had sexual relations with THAT woman." Everyone in gov't bends the truth to get your attention. Not sure who I believe, Jindal, Obama, or some lame blogger.

I guess you don't have to be a stodgy old white dude to lie to the public.

user-pic

His main point was true tho:

“The Republican party has lost your trust – and deserves to have lost your trust!”
