MSNBC's Matthews Goofs On Stevens Decision
Chris Matthews says a lot of things. So it's to be expected that sometimes they're smart and insightful, and sometimes they're embarrassingly wrong.
Just now, the MSNBC anchor, opining on the news that DOJ is dropping the charges in the Ted Stevens case, declared that the decision means "the charges should never have been brought, there should never have been a prosecution."
Um, no. The Justice Department made clear that it was dropping the case because of prosecutorial missteps -- specifically the failure to hand over a key piece of evidence to defense lawyers. The decision has almost no bearing on the merits of the underlying case against Stevens, who was convicted last fall of failing to disclose hundreds of thousands of dollar in gifts from an oil-services contractor.
Here's the video:

Nice catch. At first I thought Chris Matthews was reading a Ted Stevens or RNC Press Release.
My take is that Matthews "likes the old guys in Congress" regardless of how corrupt they are.
Or he completely turned into a Pat Buchanan - where there is no reality thinking and who totally disgusts me.

Pat Buchanan has a myriad of faults but he is not totally disgusting. One thing I've noticed recently is that he makes many complimentary and gracious remarks about Pres. Obama's personal qualities. How many of those other right-wing jerks do the same?
Also, Buchanan does have a firmer grip on reality than his comperes like Brad Blakeman and his analysis shows signs that he thinks for himself rather than parrots the talking points of the day.

"Umm, no"? That should be a "Hell, no." Reserved for the most egregious errors.

If you had a partisan Justice Dept. at your disposal, wouldn't you not only mount specious prosecutions of your enemies (Gov. Siegelman), but also throw the legitimate prosecutions of your friends, so that they'd never hold up in court?
