Obama Administration Taking Secrecy Efforts Abroad
This came out a few weeks ago, but it's worth taking note of: We've told you about the Obama administration's frequent invocations of the state secrets claim in domestic national security cases -- mimicking the Bush administration. But it now appears the administration is going further by leaning on our allies to adopt a similar approach.
Binyam Mohamed, who was released from Guantanamo in February, claims he was tortured into confessing to bombing plots, and that the British government is complicit in the torture, for feeding questions to the CIA.
Mohamed's lawyers want a summary of his treatment publicly released. But the Obama administration sent a letter to the British government, released in a court filing, threatening to withdraw intelligence cooperation between the two governments if the information is released.
The letter, reported earlier this month in the Washington Times, reads:
If it is determined that [her majesty's government] is unable to protect information we provide to it, even if that inability is caused by your judicial system, we will necessarily have to review with the greatest care the sensitivity of information we can provide in the future.
The author of the letter has been blacked out -- though there's speculation that it was Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
But whoever signed the letter, there's little doubt it came from the administration. In other words, Obama has told the British government: if you release information about how we treated Mohamed, we might not share key intelligence with you in the future. That's exactly the same threat made previously by the Bush administration.
The judges in the case have gone on record saying they "did not consider that a democracy governed by the rule of law would expect a court in another democracy to suppress a summary of the evidence contained in reports by its own officials or officials of another State where the evidence was relevant to allegations of torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment, politically embarrassing though it might be." But the British government, under pressure from the U.S., could still succeed in preventing the information from being released,
Clive Stafford Smith, Mohamed's lawyer who also represents several other Gitmo inmates, told the Daily Telegraph: "What they are doing is twisting the arm of the British to keep evidence of torture committed by American officials secret." He added: "One hopes the new administration would not continue to cover up evidence of criminal activity."

Dear TPM, 5/26/2009
Dear Mr. Roth,
As I am appreciative you have again raised the Obama Administration, CIA, Torture issues, Illegal Secrecy issues and many other seemingly significant and important relevant concerns, please allow me to mention the following;
1) As you may know on the your-rights.com there is a seemingly significant 1 1/2 hour Video Documentary, (scroll down several inches on the home center page) entitled ' Bush Link to Kennedy Assassination' which thoroughly appears to provide overwhelming substantial relevant proof of wrongdoings and in direct reference to my above allegations in the first paragraph and including murder. I suggest that this 'Bush Link to Kennedy Assassination' is viewed without skipping ahead and preferably uninterrupted from start to finish.
1a) Please note that there was also direct Testimony in the recent, 7/2008 Congressional Chairman, John Conyers, Judiciary Committee Hearings 'Presidential Powers and Its Limitations' 'Impeachment Hearings' on this exact subject matter and from Ms. Holtzman and Mr. Bugliosi and as also in Testimony as the most important hearing in recent memory, implied including the Nixon Impeachment, 40+ years. Also please note that Mr. Bugliosi has written several books, although which I have not read, entitled 'The Prosecution of Bush for Murder' 2007 and 'The Assassination of President Kennedy' 2008. Also, please note the Congressional testimony of Winter Soldiers before our US Congress that is archived on the Democracynow.org on this past Memorial Day Broadcast of 5/25/2009.
2) Please note that there may appear to be a concern and/or questions as why Ms. Caroline Kennedy and Senator Edward Kennedy some years ago went to Harvard Kennedy Law School to accept an award from the President Bush . As the Kennedy Family must have had knowledge of the past 40+ years and within the mentions of this 2004 'Bush Link to Kennedy Assassination' Documentary Video. Also seemingly astonishing is Senator Kennedy's very public vocal 'No Impeachment' with seemingly astonishing comments of 'the country can't take it'.
TPM and Mr. Roth, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at your convenience.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Tpmreader

Tpmreader, might it not be true that the reason Caroline and Edward Kennedy accepted that award is that they view videos like the one you mention as crazy, ill-informed conspiracy BS?
I say this without watching the video, just based on general knowledge that the Kennedy assassination is surrounded by myriad clouds of conspiracy theory that generally are BS. One book reviewer of a book on a JFK conspiracy commented that if true, the conspiracy outlined in the book was so massive and pervasive in the US government that Kennedy himself was probably in on it.

Well, I don't agree with what tpmreader says, but that doesn't mean there was not a conspiracy involved in the killing of JFK just as Lincoln was killed as part of a conspiracy.

Thank you for your reply, although as you have not mentioned any disagreement point and/or specific point, I am therefore unable to reply further to any of your alleged disagreement.

When and if you find time to view the documentary in its entirety, 1 1/2 hour and in seguence without skipping ahead and with reasonable full attention, I will then try to reply to any comments you may put forward. I did not find this documentary with as you mentioned '..crazy, ill-informed conspiracy BS?' and even though from my, to some extent, limited knowledge I did not and do not think and presume a Kennedy Family member would also find this documentery to not be '....crazy, ill-informed conspiracy BS?'.
Even though there may be more I could say and/or contribute here, I will only mention at this time to view this 'your-rights.com' Documentry 'Bush Link to Kennedy Assassination'.
Thank you for your time and consideration.

Why don't you put this up as a separate post? That way we aren't taking up space on somebody else's post.

how about a discussion of the post?

OK. A discussion of the post.
This is more of that "Change We Can Believe In."
Transparency - except when it involves the misdeeds and criminal acts of highly connected US Government officials.
This is like a cat trying to cover up on a tile floor - it just spreads the shit around and makes it more obvious.
Clean it up - prosecute any and all US Officials who were involved in torture - get it behind us so we can look forward with a clean conscience.
