Does S.C. Paper Have The Goods On Sanford?

There's a huge number of rumors floating around, so it's worth being cautious. But a South Carolina political blogger who used to work for Governor Sanford is now reporting:

S.C. Gov. Mark Sanford is allegedly having an extramarital-affair, evidence of which may have been obtained prior to his mysterious trip to Argentina by at least one South Carolina news outlet, sources tell FITS.

The woman with whom Sanford is allegedly involved was reportedly with the governor on his recent trip to Buenos Aires, Argentina - a trip the governor appears to have lied about to his wife, his staff and his security detail.

Sources tell FITS that The (Columbia, S.C.) State newspaper is in possession of materials which may confirm the governor's affair, although a source at the paper declined to comment on that report.

The blogger, Will Folks, had previously reported that the Sanfords had been having marital problems.

And we had reported other possible evidence that Sanford was not alone on his trip.

More in about twenty minutes when Sanford goes before the cameras.

How much does John Ensign love Mark Sanford right now?

user-pic

Good one! ;)

Sarah likes him too and so do Mike, Mitt, Newt..

user-pic

Almost as much as he loves his mistress.

Can you say TOAST.

Also Zach, glad to see you finally picked up on FitsNews. I've been alerting you guys to him for a couple weeks now.

user-pic

I bet $100 that this press availability gets cancelled at the last minute. No way does he dare face reporters at this point.

user-pic

Camera just came on, he's there and talking

user-pic

I just can't believe it. A republican -- the family values party -- having an affair? And lying about it? And thinking he could get away with it? This is certainly a first!

user-pic

Somewhere in Level 'R' of a parking garage:

OK, everybody's here. Now I have a plane ticket to Buenos Aires, and 7 straws. Now I'm cutting one of the straws in half … Condi, you take the extra half and keep it in your purse …
user-pic

LOL he's talking about the Appalachian Trail

user-pic

Press Conference right now, he is not wearing his wedding ring.

user-pic

Seriously can you go to Argentina without a visa?

user-pic

Valid U.S. passport gets you in for 90 days routine stuff.

user-pic

No wonder the Governor hate all that "security" stuff...can't sneak around as easily as he used to...

user-pic

Exactly how possible is it that Sanford has had weekends like this before, but the press didn't notice because he hadn't yet inserted himself into the national limelight?

user-pic

this guy is toast, i had no idea this was where this story was going.

user-pic

OMFG, this is amazing stuff. SIN... yes good stuff, is he admitting to an affair?

user-pic

IT IS AN AFFAIR.

user-pic

He just dropped the adultery-bomb after the most bizarre pre-confession apology

user-pic

And another one bites the dust.

user-pic

Booty Call!

But of course, he's a person of faith--faith he wouldn't get caught.

user-pic

I knew it! No gender specific pronouns! His amore is a DUDE!!

user-pic

Dammit! Foiled again! He said "she"...

And I had such hopes...

user-pic

He chooses to spend Father's Day with his mistress rather than his children? Classy.

user-pic

And he didn't even understand (during the questions) why everyone was so concerned over the governor's disappearance!!

user-pic

Wow. The lengths these Republicans will go to so they don't have to face Obama in 2012.

His wife KNEW ABOUT THE AFFAIR, and he went anyways? OMFG, now the "I don't know where he is, but I'm not worried about him" makes sense. Being a little snarky, weren't we, Mrs. Sanford?

The full quote might have been, "I'm not worried about him until I kick his 'nads up into his throat".

user-pic

These Jesus Freaks cannot stop being "holy and christian.

I don't think it's a big deal he's having an affair, but all that morality crap and "God's laws", give me a fucking break.

user-pic

I mean it's okay if he's flawed. every one of are, but these "god's laws" freaks scare me.

user-pic

So he cops to having an affair "with a dear dear friend from Argentina" for a year.

And he decides to go to Argentina to break it off.

And that takes him from Thursday to Wednesday morning (sans flight times) to get it done.

And he tells no one on the staff where he's going in the event he just disappears.

And there happen to be no phones in Argentina where he could have checked in.

His wife knew about the affair... but didn't know that he was going down to Argentina to break it off.

And he chose freaking FATHERS DAY to break it off?

Is anyone buying all this bullshit?

I mean... other than Josh with his "very human discussion" comment seeming to cut some slack on someone who has been lying for days and only is saying this much because HE GOT CAUGHT.

He almost certainly would have made up some other bullshit story if that reporter hadn't been camped out to see him get off that international flight (which takes a high placed source to know exactly where to camp out).

John

user-pic

Yeah, I'm buying most of it. The part I'm not so sure about is that it took five days to break up with her and he had to do it in person. If you really are done and are committed to your wife (and you've even spoken to your FIL about it), you do it on the phone or even written. You don't go have one final tryst with her.

But at this point, the mystery is solved so it's not as much fun anymore. Another middle aged man (R or D) having an affair. What it made it so damned interesting was all the lies.

user-pic

Exactly. The dude is sorry he got caught and that he's gotta go public. I'll give him credit for coming public, but that's a pretty low bar.

user-pic

How long until the wingnuts start screaming that this is none of our business?

user-pic

Deep Thoughts 3:

Huntsman Jr. is now laughing so hard he has accidentally pissed himself.

Palin and Piyun think they have a shot...

Olbermann and Maddow are getting their video strap-ons ready for 2 hour Sanford Gangbang.

Michael Steele WILL say something stupid and utterly forgettable

Hannity will remind us that we are all Human and Obama is evil...

user-pic

Damn, you're good.

user-pic
Olbermann and Maddow are getting their video strap-ons ready for 2 hour Sanford Gangbang.

LOL

EWWWWW.....

user-pic

I dont care what Sanford says. I am still working the Brazillian She-Male angle.

user-pic

That has me on the floor. :)

John

user-pic

I think the real laughs are going to come @ 11 pm tonight with Jon Stewart and especially Colbert.

[Last night Colbert declared himself the governor of SC (he's from there) and was deflated to learn, 45 seconds later, that the governor had been found.]

user-pic

In this press conference, Sanford cryptically said "I was in a group called C Street" (when I was in Washington), when referring to his faith.

Was Sanford referring to the Fellowship/Family (whose house is on C Street, SE)?

The same Fellowship/Family that is tied up with Ensign?

user-pic

I know this might be unpopular, but actually I believe the guy, and kinda almost feel sorry for him. Yes, he's a self-righteous GOP family-values dude, but really, after this presser, I'm no where near as outraged as I was after any of the other high-profile affair confessionals we've had to sit through in the last 18 months. He admitted fully and without excuse that he had messed up big time, let everyone down, especially his wife and kids. He admitted that it was selfish and irresponsible, and that's he's hurt everyone he's close to, including the woman he's had this affair with. But this was very, very human stuff. No fabulous prostitutes, no seamy run with the aide, it sounds like he made the mistake that all kinds of people (myself included) have made: that he fell in love with someone who was a friend, had an emotional affair for a long time that turned into a full-blown sexual one, and it's pretty much effed up everything else he's worked for. The line about "I've spent the last 5 days crying my eyes out in Argentina so that I could come back here and do it again in front of you" -- that's some serious emotional truth. While I don't in any way condone Sanford's politics or policies, I've been there, and I kinda can't get too mad at the guy for messing up on this one. He's at least trying to do the right thing. And this was a LOT less sleazy than the parade of extra-marital garbage we've seen pols from both sides of the aisle engaging in.

user-pic

Why would it take five days to break up with someone, and why do you go down to Argentina to do the breaking up isn't a phone good enough? I don't think the affair was over, but it sure is now!

user-pic

You don't break up with someone over the phone that you've been seeing for a *year* and have known for even longer. Even if this was extra-marital, didn't he owe this other woman something better than a phone call? I'd be a whole lot less sympathetic if he'd just dumped her that way -- the fact that he went down there to do it in person suggests at least the possibility that he really did feel something for this person, that it wasn't just a romp in the hay. That may not be the case, but I at least buy that it was possible. And sorry, but in my experience, if there's heartbreak involved, which it seems like there might be here, a week is really not very much time to deal with how messy everything is emotionally. It's a lot easier to be black-and-white about this sort of thing until you've been through it.

user-pic

Since when does it take Five days to break up with someone? What kind of breaking up is that?

user-pic

They say that breaking up is hard to do
Sanford knows that it's indeed true
Don't say that this is the end
Instead of breaking up I wish
he would campaign for President

user-pic

I have to admit this EXCEEDED my wildest dreams...!!!
Gov. Sanford pouting on national TV about his impossible love affair in the deeeeeepest South!

It truly doesn't get ANY BETTER than this!

MI BUENOS AIRES QUERIDO....!

user-pic

I believe he is having an affair. I believe he went to Argentina. I believe he thinks it was un-Christian and selfish and irresponsible. I believe he knows he hurt his wife and kids. I do NOT believe he had any intention of breaking off the affair or reconciling with his wife prior to being caught. I do NOT believe he went to Argentina to break it off.

I don't have any sympathy for him. He was being a total asshat and he knew it and didn't do anything to rectify the situation until his ass was already in the sling. I'm sure all the emotion he displayed was real but wasn't due to soulful contrition but rather to shame for being caught.

Bastage.

user-pic

Also totally possible.

user-pic

Can I also mention that I'm relieved that he didn't make his wife stand up there with him? Maybe she just refused to do it, in which case, good for her. I've gotta say, I think I hate the asshats even more when they make the wife take the heat of the presser with them when the fuck-up is theirs alone. Maybe this is the new post Elizabeth Edwards tell-all world? If so, she's done us all a big favor.

user-pic

Evidently it is part of the Republican Playbook for handling being outed to announce that one is resigning from something---not ones office but something less consequential.

John Ensign resigned from the Republican Leadership Council after he announced his affair. Following that, I was discussing it with some people whom listen primarily to right wing talk radio, and they felt that he had taken a brave and bold step by resigning, evidently thinking that he was no longer a Senator.

And now Mark Sanford has announced that he has resigned from the Republican Governor's Association. No doubt that talk radio will sow some similar confusion with their listeners over Sanford's bravery in resigning from his "post".

user-pic

i dont for a minute think that this slime bag deserves any credit or sympathy.

he only apologized and came clean after he got caught.
Who dumps his family and kids on father's day, gets his staff in a mess (my guess is they will never work in politics again) and dumps his state to break up with someone?
and takes five days to do it?

a slime thats who.

i really hate it when these creeps throw the bible at us when they have "sinned" and cry me a tear? yeah right...

user-pic

If the GOP were listed on an exchange it would be heading into Junk Bond territory. No, strike that -- it is there already. Time to bail on this dog.
