Husband Of Ensign's Girlfriend To Fox's Kelly: Help Me Expose Senator's "Relentless Pursuit Of My Wife"
OK, now the Ensign story is really getting good.
Yesterday we wrote about how Team Ensign is now saying that they went public about the affair because Doug Hampton, the husband of Ensign's girlfriend, was threatening to go to a TV news station about it. We asked whether Ensign was now walking back an earlier claim -- which seemed to come from his camp -- that Hampton had tried to extort him.
And now the Las Vegas Sun has obtained a letter that Hampton wrote to Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly, dated five days before Ensign went public about the affair earlier this week. Hampton asks Kelly for her assistance in exposing his former good friend's "heinous conduct and pursuit" of Hampton's wife, and pleading "Please help me."
Hampton writes that he and others confronted Ensign about the affair several times:
In fact, one of the confrontations took place in February 2008 at his (Ensign's) home in Washington D.C. with a group of his peers. One of the attendees was Senator Tom Coburn from Oklahoma, as well as several other men who are close to the senator.
Hampton adds that he chose Kelly because of her "legal back ground (sic) " and adds:
I could have sought the most liberal, Republican hating media to expose this story, but there are people's lives at stake and justice is about proper process as well as outcome. Senator Ensign has no business serving in the US (sic) Senate anymore!
You can read the full letter in all its glory here.
As we reported yesterday, Ensign and Hampton became friends through their mutual involvement in the conservative evangelical Christian group, the Promise Keepers. One of the seven promises that a participant must make is to pursue "vital relationships with a few other men, understanding that he needs brothers to help him keep his promises."
Vital is one way of putting it.

Okay, this opens more and more questions. Zach, please investigate more!!!
1 - Did FOX tip off Ensign instead of investigating the story?
2 - Did Ensign help Doug Hampton get government business in his job at Allegiant Air? Allegiant now does DOD charters and is scheduled to do regular flights to Cuba. None of that existed before Doug joined the team.
3 - Did Ensign personally benefit from his staff's relationship with the Nevada 501(c)(3) non-profit "A Hand Up?" It would appear that what was a regular Ensign fundraiser turned into a "charity event" with A Hand Up in 2005. One of Ensign's PAC staff, Lindsey Slanker, is/was a board member of that charity.

I'm more interested in how the letter itself became public. Kelly?

Another professional Christian GOP hypocrite caught having sex with someone other than his wife? Shocked, shocked I am! He should have just gotten Vitter to give him some phone numbers - less messy.

The post script of the seven promises is to "love a neighbor, as thyself". Being a republican hack, he certainly loves himself. The second part of the equasion, finding that subordinate to prey on, was his real challenge.

He took the love thy neighbor part a little too literally it seems.

Zach, a better picture of Doug Hampton (standing with Senator Ensign!!) is here.
And as a bonus, scandal-ridden NV Governor Jim Gibbons is also in the picture!

He chose Megyn Kelly because of her "legal background"? I'm sure she graduated legitimately, but I've seen her on TV and I was never struck that her sharp legal mind was her greatest asset.
If he really wanted help in resolving a difficult matter, there are scores of investigative journalists that could handle the matter with competence and discretion. I think this reveals something about Doug Hampton's motives that he would choose one of the pushiest of the Fox Newsbabes.

Another thought:
Can you imagine Fox News receiving such a salacious letter about Chuck Schumer (the equivalent ranking Democrat to John Ensign in the Senate) and sitting on it for five days?
It appears that not only did Fox News sit on it, but they must have been the ones to tip Ensign off.

You're pretty ginned up about seeing a photo of Mrs. Hamton there, TL... This is the second or third thread I've seen where you're advocating for the photographic record to be more complete!

I saw the photo somewhere---I'll try to find a link. But in the meantime you may be mollified to know that, in my opinion, Senator Ensign either needs a new pair of glasses or has even lower standards than myself.

You do know you can do Google image searches on a person's name, right? She's not unattractive, but she's hardly the silicone bimbo from central casting you seem to be imagining.

Yes, actually I have noticed the "Images" option in Google (I'm clueless about many things but not that clueless). However, I have not been able to locate the picture I thought I saw. Evidently a picture of Mrs. Hampton was included at a major news site but it was the incorrect picture and is now taken down. And TPM's recently posted slideshow of the main players in the Ensign saga punts on Cynthia's image (just a silhouette).

My bad. They were there yesterday. Saw one that, according to the caption, was her and Ensign at some political function but now, mysteriously, tonight I can't find them. Makes one suspect they've been yanking them off his campaign websites as fast as they can.

I guess the "relentless pursuit" ended after her high heels caught in a carpet tear, sending her crashing into bed with her feet in the air.

"Here is my story. In December of 2007 in the midst of some very difficult personal issues that deeply impacted my family and marriage, Senator Ensign pursued and engaged in a relationship with my wife."
I wonder what those "very difficult personal issues" were. Typically in Promise Keeper land that's code language for "I was having an affair too."

Sometimes that code goes further in that "the affair wasn't necessarily with another woman..."

I know this is way off the point, but Hampton writes like a semi-literate junior high student. And he was on Senator Ensign's staff?

I love it. GoOPers trying to use Fox News to settle personal scores with each other. I guess when it's a wholly-controlled subsidiary of the GOP, Republicans think it's at their disposal any time for any purpose.

Hate to be the grammar police but, according to the Las Vegas Sun's editor's note, Sen. Ensign was engaged in a homosexual affair:
"Editor’s note: Doug Hampton, the husband of Cynthia Hampton, who had an affair with Sen. John Ensign, explains in a letter..."
The editor's note should probably read:
"Doug Hampton, the husband of the woman who had an affair with Sen. John Ensign, explains in a letter..."
But, hey, I'll be the first to admit their grammatically challenged version is a lot more fun.

It's sad how deluded these True Believers are--Hampton actually thinks FOX News is going to help him out? It appears they already have done what they could to help (the Republican Power structure) by sitting on the story.
And how naive is this money quote? Guess what Doug, you got it exactly wrong--you wanted 'proper process' and so you went to FOX Newz? That's so clueless that it makes me wonder how far Ensign had to go before Hampton finally chose to believe his lyin' eyes.
The Repuglican party and its beggars and hangers-on all seem to have taken their credo from Otter in Animal House:
"You fucked up. You trusted us!"

PLEASE chase this story down! I have NO doubt that Roger Ailes himself most likely called Sen. Ensign after Kelley informed him (Ailes) of the letter. No crime, sure, but FOX must be exposed for what it is - propaganda machine and hit squad for the Rightwing.

Citoyen92:
In some of your comments on my posts, you're saying that Cindy Hampton worked with Chris Ward as assistant treasurer at NRCC. That would be very interesting if true, but I can't verify.
When I follow your comments back to what you posted on Firedoglake in 07, it looks like what you found at the time is that Ward and Hampton worked together at Senate Majority Committee, not that Hampton worked at NRCC.

It wouldnt be surprising that they worked together at Senate Majority Committe, since Ward worked for alot of senators' PACs, and we know Hampton worked for several of Ensign's outfits, thru the Doug connection. But am i missing evidence that she worked at NRCC too?
Thanks.

Hey Zach:
I got a little ahead of myself when the story broke. Cynthia Hampton never did work for the NRCC. She was the assistant treasurer at the Senate Majority Committee when the Ward thing blew up. She took over from Ward and became SMC treasurer at that point.
Sorry for any confusion on that point.

This whole thing seems to work out something like this:
1. Doug Hampton is a big dog working for Ensign.
Doug's wife is also a big dog working for Ensign.
2. Ensign has an affair with Doug's wife.
3. This is very awkward and Doug and wife leave Ensign's employment and big dog jobs.
4. Doug needs job, which Ensign fixes up.
5. Time passes, real estate market crashes.
6. Doug's Las Vegas manse is now assessed at $865k with a $1.2 mil mortgage on it.
(As a rough rule-of-thumb, mortgage pmts in ordinary times are about 1% per month.
Let's say $12,000 per month or more.)
7. Doug is no longer a big dog and is very strapped for cash.
8. Money is the #1 cause of marital discord.
9. Doug now has no house, no marriage and insignificant job.
8. Meanwhile, Ensign is running for President.
In sum, the cuckolded victim and not the hypocrite adulterer loses everything and says WTF!
I am betting there are a few more shoes to drop, possibly high heels.

Doug Hampton's letter to Kelly asks for help in resolving an issue that he states (in his) letter did not end until April 2008. So if it ended in April 2008, why is he writing to Kelly now?
And what is he asking Kelly to do? Is he asking her to out Ensign? If Ensign is no longer pursuing his wife, shouldn't he be asking his wife to stop pursuing Ensign?
There are a lot of unanswered questions here, but it is all too sordid (and not very interesting) to me.

Has anyone actually read the letter? It's like the guy thinks his wife wasn't even in the decision loop on whether to get busy with Ensign. Apparently, either she's just Hampton's remote control, or else Ensign used some sort of Sith mind control power to rob her of all volition. In that way rich white Republican men have, it is really insulting to his wife, and to women generally, and he probably doesn't even realize it.

Yeah I had the same response. Probably less painful to fool himself into thinking that his wife had no agency in the whole thing.
