Report: Sanford Seen In Atlanta Airport

That Appalachian Trail story is looking shakier and shakier.

Local news channel WYFF4 reports:

On Tuesday, sources told News 4's Nigel Robertson that a state vehicle is missing and was tracked down, not to the Appalachian Trail, but to the Hartsfield-Jackson Airport in Atlanta.

Sources told Robertson that a federal agent spotted Sanford in the airport boarding a plane. Robertson was told that the governor was not accompanied by security detail.

...

News 4 called the governor's office, and was told again by staffers that they stand by their original statement that the governor is hiking the Appalachian Trail. They did not want to comment on this story.

It had previously been reported that the governor's cell phone had been tracked to the Atlanta area.

Sanford's staff put out the word late last night that he's hiking the Appalachian. Of course, it would be possible for Sanford to have driven from Columbia to Atlanta, boarded a flight to somewhere else on the trail, got off the plane, and embarked on his hike. But it doesn't seem like the most logical way to do it.

It's also worth noting that the TV station's report doesn't specify what day Sanford was seen.

Earlier today, Sanford's wife Jenny told CNN she still hadn't heard from her husband and that "I am being a Mom today."

Are we sure this was not a tour plane heading for the Appalachian Trail?

user-pic

He boarded a plane in Atlanta ? South Carolina airports aren't good enough?

user-pic

"What... South Carolina airports aren't good enough for Mr. High & Mighty Governor!"

JOhn

user-pic

He thinks he's better than us!

user-pic

Now it sounds like he flew to Ibiza for a gaycation. Man oh man... What a nightmare... I'm goign to go call Vegas and put $10,000 on him NOT showing up in Charleston tomorrow...

user-pic

I think you're on to something. Perhaps the gay thing, perhaps not, but it was something shady that spun out of control. Something sneaky he's done before but got really caught up in this time. Maybe he did so much meth, a la Ted Haggard, that he needed a few days to unwind, and now he's trying to figure out how to return all nonchalant-like, and say, "what? what's the big deal?" and somehow flip it back on the questioners. only problem is, he has no decent alibi for what the hell he's been doing, and the longer he's gone the worse it gets as any excuse becomes less and less believable.

of course, repugs forgive their own as they did Craig and have Vitter. they're all closeted in one way or another

user-pic

Oh god... please don't go to the Meth well. :)

user-pic

There's actually a small part of my brain that wonders if he was sneaking off to D.C. to talk about some presidential appointment, which would explain the complete secrecy, even to his own staff. Because other than that, I don't have a clue. This is way too shady to be your run-of-the-mill affair kind of thing. Not rehab--you need more like a month. I'm honestly baffled.

user-pic

DaveJ: Maybe rehab for huffing paint?

user-pic

No, I don't think so -- you don't need that much pretext to fly to DC for a few days, and he has drawn much more attention to himself than if he had just flown to DC in order to meet with the SC delegation or trade reps or whoever. No ideas, but it is weird, isn't it?

Also, I think Sanford is unlikely to take a post with the Obama administration. I mean, this is the guy who sued in order to try not to get the federal stimulus funds. A true believer of the highest (or lowest) order.

user-pic

um...and he was being observed by federal agents because...? Can't wait to hear.

user-pic

And is the car still there?? There must be video of entry and/or exit.

This is like a Columbo episode.

user-pic

Seriously, the federal agents thing is weird. How did this source happen to learn what the federal agent observed? So many questions.

user-pic

Why was he being observed? Because a state vehicle was missing and taken across state lines. They probably had lojack on the car and just happened to catch Sanford as they were looking for the car.

user-pic

A federal agent could be someone working the security gate, rather than James Bond, ya know.

user-pic

The governor is missing and no one calls the FBI to start a world-wide search?

user-pic

This is getting juicier and juicier. Tomorrow's news conference will be must-see TV. How does our hero get out of THIS jam???

user-pic

The AT story was always a cover. The question is just who can prove it.

user-pic

FOR

user-pic

LOG CABIN REPUBLICANS???

user-pic

I wish I could quit you.

user-pic

Don't leave! I can change, I swear!

user-pic

I'm going to have to bookmark all the comment sections on this story so I can go back and laugh my ass off at them.

user-pic

STEWART/COLBERT

user-pic

Now...what sort of things are near that airport? What was he really up to?

user-pic

What makes you think it has to be something NEAR the airport? Maybe he was hanging out IN the airport. You know, practicing his "wide stance."

user-pic

REPUBLICANS.

user-pic

Would not a 5 day "hike" require a good amount of planning, equipment, and provisions?

user-pic

Absolutely!! There are no 7-11s on the trail and you'd have to be an experienced hiker to go it alone. Is that in his history?

This trail story is unraveling faster than a $20 dollar suit.

user-pic

He's very frugal. What he normally does is kill, skin and eat hiking hippy types, to spare government the cost of cans of spam.

user-pic

Well, of course he's not LITERALLY hiking the trail. A flyover IS a Republican hike. Walking is too slow, plus there are all those bugs . . .

user-pic

Weird. Sanford's people aren't denying the ATL airport story -- only saying that they stand by their Appalachian Trail story.

I think there's more here... If a story is wrong, you shoot it down, right? I know Sanford's spokespeople have been criticized for not being the sharpest, but knocking down false info is "Spox 101"... Unless it's politically useful to keep a story alive. I seriously doubt that they would want to keep a "Gov. of S.C. 'found' at ATL international airport" story alive. It would be even worse for them if he left the country.

user-pic

No Obama appointment. I think Obama learned with Gregg about keeping the Kook Wing of the GOP away from the Admin.

John

user-pic

So, this has been mentioned tangentially, but what about the fact that his cell phone was being tracked? Combine this with the feds spotting him boarding the plane, and that his wife is not expressing that much concern about his being gone, and this is really getting interesting...

user-pic

If the Feds were watching him as a matter of duty, the story wouldn't have been given to the local Atlanta news, would it? Isn't it possible that the person who saw him just happened to be a federal agent?

The Columbo comment above is right on. A detective could definitly piece this together. I bet his credit card company knows where he's been.

user-pic

Watching the self-destruction of hypocritical Republican politicians and preachers is so much fun! More popcorn please!

user-pic

hewhohasnoname,

His staff is on Expedia plotting their own escapes as we speak...

user-pic

LOL Well, maybe they're smarter than we think.

user-pic

Someone needs to ask if he had ALL of his Medications when he left. Had they been filled recently and was he taking them, because this all sounds like a guy off his meds.

user-pic

The reason the Gov didn't tell the Lt.Gov where, what or ahem, who, he was doing was because they are dating. Jez, if his WIFE can give him some space on Father's Day, it's soo sad his lover couldn't and that necessitated all this A T nonsense. Of course I'm joking. And, I'm queer myself, so the gay angle is actually something I hope is not part of all this. That said, he's not a bad looking older guy. Hey Mark, can I have yur number? I'll play dress up & be a Republican for you . . .

user-pic

Play dress up?

You couldn't possibly own enough polyester to appeal to a Republican Guvnuh's refined taste in unnatural fibers. (And if you do, you are a bona fide fire hazard!) I bet you don't even own a single neon-green, day-glo yellow and fire-engine-red plaid leisure suit. Still, your extensive collection of latex would surely arouse his interest. And, of course, the toys, always the toys.

user-pic

Do you really consider yourself "queer"? I;m just sayin

user-pic

You know what? This is not really important. I'm reading about the Public Option that will not be an option even if it exists. I'm reading about 50 Pakistanis getting killed by a US air drone while attending a funeral for other Pakistanis killed by a drone. Why is a story that is almost surely going to wind up being another Republican family values guy getting more or less kinky sex on the side doing as the BIG HEADLINE story on TPM? Somewhere on the side, for a little progressive smirking, OK. But it's not the most serious issue out there on this particular June 23.

user-pic

For the same reason we follow Jon and Kate, against our better judgement. And this is TPM Muckraker after all...not TPM Pakistani Drones or TPM Public Option. But lucky for you, they cover those too!

user-pic

I agree even though I think my post was funny. The fact is, you are right. But, isn't it OK to have a little fun? So much sucks these days, and he is a Republican . . .

user-pic

I understand what you're saying. I think it's getting coverage because it's such an odd story.

And, if the layers keep peeling away like they've started today, you'll probably hear more about this in the coming days...

user-pic

Define serious.

user-pic

Hey we are having fun here. Don't spoil it by mentioning the real news.

I'm betting he went somewhere for a transplant surgery.

user-pic

he got on a private plane (hence the very few witnesses), owned by Limbaugh (who is also on vacation), headed to S. America for some viagra fun...maybe.

user-pic

Congrats! You won the pool!

user-pic

I think we need a good map of the Appalachian trail in the TPM archives.

user-pic

He's gone Galt.

Pretty soon there will be a nation-wide radio message (or at least a call-in to Rush's show) "This is Mark Sanford speaking..."

user-pic

Oh my God, you've got it.

But then that would mean Sanford's Gulch... is in Georgia?

user-pic

If Sanford's story, through his staff, is on the level why did officials search for, then find, his vehicle?

user-pic

Yeah you would think he would have told somebody that he was taking the vehicle, so why would they be looking for it?

user-pic

George at Urban Survival has an interesting take on this story.

user-pic

Man, I can't believe you let me go over there and read. Not that I understood anything...

user-pic

How do we know this guy hasn't been kidnapped? We don't.

user-pic

We can hope so, though. Can you say "Dueling Banjos"?

user-pic

Sanford just left for a 3-hour tour, a 3-hour tour. The weather started getting rough .... Uh oh, I don't like where this is going. We may not hear from him for years.

user-pic

He's out, um, polling the electorate.

Heh.

user-pic

he said "polling"

user-pic

This is like a GOP blog.TPM has more smiling Republican faces than Dems as its top stories. And the advertisers here take not so subtle swipes at the administration. UPS with their "it's not about sacfrices" ad and Dominos Pizza CEO coming on TV and telling everyone that "he's not there to get bailout but he's there to give you one. Medco was taking swipes about spending. BTW My UPS driver said she doesn't get air conditioning in the summer for that big brown box she drives in. I guess that's not a scarifice since it doesn't affect wealthy shareholders adversely.

user-pic

OF COURSE!

He was at the famous "Appalachian Trail" brothel on Peachtree St. Now it all makes sense.

user-pic

Its called a "Republican Bender". Aka Gay sex.

user-pic

Wait a minute...!

That's not Sanford at all! It's... A MASK!

user-pic

I've hiked the entire 80 miles of the Appalachian Trail section in Georgia, from the southern terminus at Mt. Springer, Ga., well north into North Carolina. All of the trail, including the Georgia section, is located considerably north of South Carolina's governor's mansion. There is no frigging way anyone would drive south from S.C. to the Trail via Atlanta and its notorious traffic, and there is no place on the trail that you can fly to from Atlanta, really, since the trail follows remote mountain crests that could not have a landing strip.

user-pic

Trail map at http://www.appalachiantrail.org/site/c.mqLTIYOwGlF/b.4850633/k.9733/Interactive_Map.htm

Also, I should have said, "follows remote mountain ridges," not "crests."

user-pic

So I guess that rules out my 'tour plane to the Appalachian Trail' theory?

user-pic

Sunday was Naked Hiking Day...

user-pic

For fun, google "Naked Hiking Day"

You will laugh...

user-pic

Solstice? Father's Day?

โ€œItโ€™s just rude,โ€ said Brian King, spokesman for the Appalachian Trail Conservancy in Harpers Ferry, W.Va. โ€œPeople are out there hiking with their kids and families, and there are Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts.โ€

Since the ATC HQ is near us, we were treated to coverage in the local, conservative paper. But this story on Sanford by Politico is a little strange in its tone.

Mark Sanford risks being odd man

During his State of the State speech in 2006, he lost his train of thought and admitted he was daydreaming about a fishing trip with a pal.

:::

โ€œUnless he buried a few bodies along the Appalachian Trail, I donโ€™t think this will matter in the least,โ€said GOP strategist Stuart Stevens.
user-pic

The gettin' some on the downlow theory would hold more water for me if he hadn't ditched on Father's Day. So that leads me to ask, are any other right wing loons mysteriously missing 'cause at this point, I'm thinking "Six Days in May" and he's being vetted for replacement president. Not that that's necessarily incompatible with the gay tryst theory, of course.

user-pic

All airport security are now, "federal agents," so what this means is that he was clocked by one of the people going through the security line, prior to the gate. That's probably why the story from the Atlanta TV station doesn't include the destination of the plane he was boarding. You have to show ID to the guard at the security check and Sanford may have also thrown some pompous (or, "erratic,") behavior into the mix, thus making him more memorable to the security agent...

I just hope that someone, preferably a TV station, has reporters staking out the terminal, as well as the Suburban in the parking lot. The only way to determine where he really was (or at least narrow it down) will be to literally see him getting off the plane. If he's smart he'll at least ditch the suit and overnight garment bag and show up wearing boots, a lumberjack shirt, and a backpack. Somehow, I don't think he's that together.

Why is this important in light of the misery going down elsewhere in the world and why does this guy not deserve some private space, or whatever? Because he's a, "family-values," spouting hypocritical Republican, "fiscal conservative," who would abandon his familial and professional obligations, misappropriate state equipment and funds for his own personal moonage daydream, try to sneak around all incognito, and yet still DARE to tell me how to live my life. It's not really why is everybody getting all obsessed about this guy going on an innocent and private little bender or whatever, but why isn't the first question out of reporter's mouths whenever addressing Vitter, Ensign, et al, "How can you not be too embarrassed to still be here?" followed by raucous laughter.

user-pic

This is all so very The Birdcage.

user-pic

He and gay (or straight) buddy(or buddies) head secretly to Carribean, as they have done in the past. He leaves from Atlanta because this way less likely to be discovered. It is also a central flight hub. His wife isn't concerned because he has done this before. It's part of their marriage deal.

user-pic

If it turns out he was working for Habitat for Humanity incognito, to avoid easy cheesy publicity, I will be seriously upset.

user-pic

The whole thing is just too strange. Is Sanford up for re-election anytime soon? I would have to think that this would not go over well with many voters, especially the idea of him leaving his kids & wife behind like that. I'm also not buying that his staff doesn't know

Does S.C. have any type of recall law? Could the state legislature remove him for improper behavior? I can't imagine that he is going to just show up in a few days and nothing will be done.

user-pic

I'm hoping he flew to Singapore for some sort of medical situation. I'd like to put that into the mix.

user-pic

The WYFF4 report says "a federal agent spotted Sanford in the airport boarding a plane". If so, then the agent must have known the destination of the plane. Why doesn't the report mention it?

user-pic

I was thinking of it this way... If you were a security guard working at the big line that everyone has to pass through before going to their individual gates, and you remembered seeing him for whatever reason, you could reasonably infer that he was going to board a plane, but might not notice which gate.

user-pic

Agreed. I guess I'm being too literal here, but when I read that an agent "spotted" Sanford "boarding" an airplane, then I have this image of an agent who just happens to be right near the gate rather than at a check-in line.

user-pic

My hunch is he's in Iran, trying to raise his bonafides for 2012. That's is, if he were a smarty pants. Otherwise, he's paying for the silence of his mistress.

user-pic

Some have questioned the "federal agent" aspect, but that doesn't mean anyone was tailing him.

Airports are crawling with federal agents since 9/11, and top politicians are constantly flying. The people at the Atlanta airport, including the feds, undoubtedly know Sanford by sight.

user-pic

The thing is, if Sanford hasn't come forward by now, he's either on the run, or out of his gord. If this was a weekend with a hooker, he would have turned up as soon as he heard he made the news. The way his office is acting suggests they don't know where he is, and know why.

That means he's either gone on some drug binge, he's mentally unstable, or fleeing. I'd say he's got some form of mental illness, unless he shows up tomorrow, in which case I'd say it's taking a day to sober him up.

The only other thing I can think of is he went off to do some illicit deal, but it still doesn't explain why he hasn't turned up.

user-pic

I'm in SC (but I'm not crazy). In 2007, our newly elected State Treasurer was indicted and convicted on drug possession and distribution (a lot of it).

There's a party mentality to some of these SC businessmen.

Seriously though, look at his pictures from a few years ago to now. His face looks drawn and terrible.... definitely looks like evidence of a meth habit. I could be wrong.

I don't want to echo everyone else's questions but only an addict would pull this type of stunt.
