Sanford Admits More Trysts With Lover

South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, who originally admitted to meeting his Argentine mistress four times in the past year, told the AP that the number is more like seven.

Apparently there were five meetings in the last year, including "two multi-night stays" in New York. That's the first time he's admitted to trysts on U.S. soil.

There were also two more meetings before the. The two first met in 2001.

The AP interview was, unsurprisingly, "lengthy" and "emotional."

Late update: The AP has released more of the interview. Looks like Sanford attempted to end the relationship earlier this year (or at least, that's what he told his wife). After asking her several times, Sanford got permission from his wife to go to New York, meet his lover and end the affair in person. He took along a "trusted spiritual adviser" as a chaperone for an evening of church, dinner and no overnight stay.

Then, of course, he ended up in Argentina.

Also of note: One of those pre-2008 meetings was over coffee during the 2004 Republican National Convention in New York.

I mentioned when the this story first broke...there would be more to this story...and it's not over yet! Next will be the news of more than one woman has had affairs with the soon to be ex-governor!

user-pic

Its like peeling an onion.

user-pic

It just goes to show just how destructive GAY MARRIAGE is to our society. It's all Vermont's fault!

user-pic

psyclone,

truly, some years ago when the first gay couple got married in Massachusetts my wife of almost 60 years divorced me!

The gays are destroying traditional marriage, just ask, Newt, Giuliani, Livingston, Vitter, Sanford, and Ensign.

user-pic

See, 7 trysts are not resignation material. 8? That would seal it. But 7 is ok.

user-pic

For South Carolina, I would set the bar even higher. It has to result in a miscegenated love-child or abortion to really "count" as a mark against his character.

user-pic

Unless, of course, it were a Democrat.

user-pic

Can someone ask what form of birth control is appropriate for (R) politicians to use, since they don't seem to believe it's correct for their children to use birth control?

user-pic

Y'all are wrong. There is no limit for the GOP. All they have to do is ask God for forgiveness and they are fine.

user-pic

Hey, even pro-choice Democrats like John Edwards "choose" not to protect themselves and their "girlfriends." Why should Sanford?

"Trying to fall in love with his wife again." This guy is Mr. Romance. Really. A romance novel come to life for the Christian right. Gives a new meaning to the word "rapture."

user-pic

Apparently Mark Sanford is quite the hiker!

user-pic

Hiking the Argentinian skirt!

user-pic

I think they call it "the pampas" in Argentina.

user-pic

A real mother-hiker, if you ask me.

user-pic

Yesterday I received email from a SC relative that stated 3 other women are coming forward claiming they too ... have had flings with Sanford.

Whether true or not remains to be seen. thestate.com has been ripe with article after article but I didn't note any articles about the "other women".

Who can not find it outrageous? - yet again - a POS ran for office promising policies to discriminate against our citizens, deny equal rights and enact laws to do so while touting their moral superiority when they are nothing but spiritually constipated moral charlatans laughing all the way to the bank and political office.

I keep flashing back to the DeLay/Reed emails revealed in legal discovery doc dump... wherein the two men were mocking and chuckling over the nation's fundamentalists as being

(paraphrased).."whackos who will believe anything we tell them and send us money to do it"

It is quite dunning to witness innumerable posted comments on various news sites .... people who just cannot comprehend the "hypocrisy" of these 'values' conservatives. They don't see it, don't see the "problem".

First stage is denial. That stage has lasted decades, when do they move on to the next and begin healing their intellectual constipation?

user-pic

Jim better dig out the old testament to find some new mythological fuck-ups to leverage for his rehab.

user-pic

Soon, Sanford is going to have to go back all the way to Greek mythology. "It's okay because Zeus never resigned and he had more than 10 affairs."

user-pic

Are you kidding? He's going to have to go all the way back to cave paintings!

user-pic

Has anyone else noticed he only ever focuses on the sex and never on the lying?

user-pic

I'm seeing "addicted to sex" in his future. Not his fault. An illness, don't you know.

user-pic

I'd bet real money his wife is the one who got him to start taking the Viagra in the first place.

user-pic

You aren't implying that this could in any way be his wife's fault, are you? Even if she wanted him to take viagra, being that she is married to him, she should have reasonable expectation that she would be the sole beneficiary of what would pop up as a result of the viagra.

user-pic

I think in many of these cases part of the problem is that these ambitious men have made strategic marriages that never really turned on their lights sexually. They eventually realize what they are missing out on, and look for it elsewhere.

Sanford's wife seems a case in point. She may be a terrific political strategist, but it's hard to imagine that she's much fun in the sack.

user-pic

Well, then I guess what he did was totally excusable. God, if only Jenny had been sexier, Sanford wouldn't have had to stray. In case you are wondering, if I were saying this outloud to you, you would hear the disdainful snark dripping from my voice.

user-pic

Yes, Virginia, there is a nincompoop here, and it is YOU! People who think like you do are part of the problem.

user-pic

You do know that his wife seemed sexually compatible enough to produce four sons...I mean seriously, this isn't about her performance, this is about him and his "out of sight, out of mind" mentality about his wife.
The dude is a douchebag...nothing more, nothing less.

user-pic

Yes, everyone knows that accomplished, driven women are never any good in the sack.

F'n moron....

user-pic

I don't think it needs to be said that yours is an asinine comment.

First if you are not happy with your relationship you END it BEFORE you start another. Sanford made the cowardly choice of ignoring that rule.

Secondly, its been my experience that a person's performance in the "sack" is directly related to the performance of their partner.

user-pic

She's a good looking woman, Virginia. Your second paragraph is totally uncalled for.

But your first point is right on. Marrying for money can be one of the hardest jobs there is. Just ask Claus von Bulow.

user-pic

Y'know, King David had Bathsheba come to him.

user-pic

Meh. I'm not sure I care to hear the details of Sanford's meetings with his mistress. If he misused tax money in order to do it (which it looks like has), that's one thing, but otherwise I don't care to know where he met his lover and when.

If the (apparently wholly unsubstantiated) rumor posted upthread - about additional women coming forward - turned out to be true, though, that'd be different. Feh.

user-pic

Sanfords in like Flynn... the woman wasn't black and she wasn't a nanny in the US illegally. Everything else is just a good ol' boy getting a piece of strange.... har har har... ya hear that bubba? Piece of strange? Har har... pass me one of them Jax willya?

user-pic

This guy's marriage is so over.

user-pic

Oops - latest reports on MSNBC say that Sanford has admitted hiking other trails with other women. But apparently he never completed the hike with these other women.

user-pic

Is "trused spiritual advisor" a synonym for Senator Dr. Coburn (R-OK)?

user-pic

Ooh, just when I was going to post "I bet it'll turn out to be 'Sanford Admits More Lovers'"...

Next up is Jenny will divorce him.

user-pic

I thought she was willing to forgive him if he repented and that she believed this crisis would "make their marriage stronger"...

user-pic

For most women, and I bet his wife's one of them, thoughts of forgiveness flew out the window when, according to the Denver Post, he said that while Chapur was his soul-mate, he was "trying to fall back in love with his wife".

**Trying**??!! After 20 years of marriage? Holy crap! Think of the complete lack of sensitivity behind that ...

How can he be so dumb that he wouldn't know those are killing words that totally stab at a spouse's heart. Somebody up above said it already - and I agree -- this marriage is sooooooo over.

user-pic

Agreed.........what a piece of work this man is.
1.The governor said he "never crossed the ultimate line" with anyone but Maria Belen....."the ultimate line" meaning vagina? Did he just get a "Monica" or cop a feel?
2. "There was some kind of connection from the very beginning," means to me that his emails with Maria were never innocent ....this doesn't sound like this just developed....he went after her and she was into dating a powerful American man.
3A. Chapur, the Argentine at the "This was a whole lot more than a simple affair, this was a love story,"
3B. Chapur is his soul mate but he's trying to fall back in love with his wife. These do not sound like words from someone who is trying to move on. Or else he's completely clueless.
My guess is that he will lose his job, his wife will dump him, and his hot girlfriend will no longer want him if he is no longer a powerful American man. He needs to move onto Horndog Lane w/ John Edwards and the others and start a Harlequin romance book club. Someone should write a graphic novel about him, his new neighbors, and their many lovers......Maria being Stanford's ultimate soul mate, of course. At least for another 6 years. Then he'll trade her in for another.

user-pic

Yuck. May we consign Sanford's public agonizing to the trashy Too Much Information file along with: Palin's views on her illegitimate grandson's father, her grandson's father's views on Palin, Vitter's propensity for hookers and diapers, the transgressions of the Junior Senator from Nevada, the contents of Michael Jackson's stomach, the fact that Spitzer wore his socks during sex with a hooker, etc., etc.

Enough. We need to concentrate on the things we need to know rather than the things we'll never know and/or can exist without knowing.

user-pic

Speaking of Michael Jackson, I bet his death has been troubling for Sanford. At least two MJ songs clearly have special meaning for the Luv Gov: "Don't Stop Till You Get Enough" and "Never Can Say Goodbye."

(But seriously, what I consider grounds for his impeachment are his disappearing for nearly a week without telling anyone how to reach him in case of emergency. Straight-up dereliction of duty.)

user-pic

....thinkin' with his dick....

user-pic

I think the wife's comments were worked on with her lawyer so don't read too much into what she said. I have read pieces elsewhere implying she is either some gullible homebody or a naive dupe. Having lived in the south, I know that the only thing a wife can say is "I love him, I want to stay married to him, we are working on our marriage, I want us to be a family again" etc. etc. etc. Southern states mostly have fault laws still in place. Even if she wanted to kill him and leave him her lawyer probably said just keep saying you want your marriage to work. Then when he really acts too stupid about this too many times, which I think he has now, she can talk divorce. Which is still a gamble for a woman to do in the south. Or she can wait and let him get even more stupid. I actually feel sorry for the guy now. I don't think his bizarre behavior was brought on by the affair and loss of the hottie but because he obviously has a serious screw loose. He is now asking to be impeached, canned, asked to resign, divorced, you name it. I think he imagines if that all happens he can go live down in Argentina with his honey. But probably by that time she will be sick of him too.

user-pic

Too much information.

This guy needs to know when to just shut the fuck up.

user-pic

If Sanford was married to me, he would no longer be able to "spark", either with his billfold or his personal equipment. What viagra gives, a knife can take away.

user-pic

The focus should be on why Sanford thought it was acceptable to abandon his duties for almost a week, and how much taxpayer money went to funding his booty calls.

user-pic

I feel very sorry for Gov. Sanford's wife and four sons, who clearly didn't deserve to be so roundly humiliated on a national scale by this narcissistic son of a bitch.

You know, I bet that even when he went to church with his family, that sanctimonious asshat was probably on nookie patrol. What a miserable fucking douchebag!

user-pic

Narcissistic? You think? Did comparing himself to King David show us a clue?

I find it interesting that the person he apologized to the most was his "spiritual adviser," who even met with the two of them? And I suppose he still thinks of himself as a Christian. This is what you get when you're convinced that a supreme being will "forgive" you of anything.

Sheesh.

user-pic

Doesn't everyone else love the use of the word "sparking."

user-pic

The word is that Sanford is on the brink of a mental breakdown. He might just resign on his own since he can't govern and have a midlife crisis/breakdown at the same time.

The guy obviously was really hooked on his latin honey, and can't get over it. This public grieving is like nothing I've ever seen in politics, maybe it was more than hot sex...I mean infidelity.

When the next press conference is announced I will be in attendance, and out of respect for Jenny and the children I won't be grinning from ear to ear like those at the last one.

user-pic

I think I'm going to call him "the lov gov." In watching Rachel Maddow's interview of Gina Smith of The State (June 25th), I got the impression Sanford was going to feed her and all of us in turn some cock and bull story about needing to get away from it all. I think it was not until she confronted him with knowledge of the emails that he knew the jig was up. His course of action since then has been a calculated containment action that is anything but because of his failure to fully come clean. In putting the pieces of the puzzle together think about this, if he had made an attempt to end the affair with the help of an intermediary what was the need to go back to Argentina again now? Does it take 5 days to break off an affair? Would an email or even a phone call saying something to the effect, "its been fun but its over" not have done the trick unless it really were not over. Lastly, if Maria really is his soul mate as he claim, would it not make sense to make a clean break with his wife rather than try to force a reconciliation knowing for the rest of his life that his soul mate is out there somewhere?

user-pic

Ol Sparky needs to keep his mouth shut for the sake of his wife and sons. If he believes Maria is his soulmate *cough cough*, he needs to get a divorce and move to Argentina.

Everytime he goes on these "talks of romance" and forgiveness, I can only think of the brilliant Jon Stewart line "...conservative mind and liberal penis." Sparky is truly becoming a joke.

user-pic

Although, "I will be able to die knowing that I had met my soul mate," would make for a really fun campaign slogan if he still wants to have a go at the presidency.
