Sanford To Reimburse SC For '08 Argentina Trip
Remember that trip Sanford took to several Latin American countries, including Argentina, last summer, as part of a trade mission?
It turns out that, as suspected, he did see Maria while there. And he's paying the state back for the cost of the Argentina leg.
The governor just put out the following statement:
As noted by the Department of Commerce, I attended a trade mission with the Department of Commerce last June. As the agenda notes, the mission was spent meeting with government and private business officials in both Brazil and Argentina. This trip was handled very professionally by the Department of Commerce, and I'm proud of their work there.However, while the purpose of this trip was an entirely professional and appropriate business development trip, I made a mistake while I was there in meeting with the woman who I was unfaithful to my wife with. That has raised some very legitimate concerns and questions, and as such I am going to reimburse the state for the full cost of the Argentina leg of this trip.

How about if reimburses the state for the entire amount of the trip, and not just the Argentinian leg, as it were?
Would he even have bothered going on the trip at all if it weren't for that leg(s)?
Not to mention he should be required to pay interest, because otherwise he's getting a no-interest loan from the state to go on these legs.

Because he's an incompetent, mendacious, derelict-in-his-duties governor who was planning to be gone from the state for 10 days without letting anyone else in the state government know? How's that for starters?

I feel sort of bad that he now has to mention "the woman I was unfaithful to my wife with" in every public statement. It's a verbal scarlet letter. The fact is, he doesn't have to reimburse the state because he banged his girlfriend on the trip, he's reimbursing them because he turned it into a pleasure trip. (As if anyone who's traveled for business hasn't worked in some pleasure time, but that's beside the point.) It's like (ok not really, but work with me) if I turned in an expense report that said "$76: Reimbursal for two of three days' car rental (third day was for personal business -- visiting strip club, driving friendly stripper around town, eventually having sex in back seat)." No one wants to know all that stuff. It's just an expense report.

How about he also reimburses the state for his salary and benefits payments for the week he was out-of-pocket as well. That plus the trip would seem to be less than a minimum.
If he reimbursed South Carolina for the time he was utterly worthless, he would owe everything he has ever received.

Sanford is clearly on a desperate mission to control the damage. Reimbursing the state for the Argentine leg of the trip????
The next thing will be reimbursing the state for all the wages earned while he was "hiking on the Apalachian Trail" instead of working.
Sorry, Governor but at this point all your efforts are wasted.

I'm not with him on this one. I think he's let the genie out of the bottle. Should have stuck to his guns. He was down there on legitimate SC business and the fact that he saw her while he was there is irrelevant.
Good news for Sanford though, Michael Jackson just died so there's the new lead story.

Check this clip out of Mika Brzezinski essentially saying that Sanford's affair is not as bad as Clinton's because at least Sanford was in love with the person he was cheating on his wife with.

Didn't Sanford use a state vehicle to travel to Atlanta airport and to return home.He owes the state for use of its vehicle!

One report I saw says it was a police vehicle with weapons in the trunk. If so, did he take them out and leave them somewhere or did he leave them in the car at the airport?

Too bad, but these clowns DO get free passes for criminal behavior BECAUSE they are important! The voters of this nation who put these scoundrels (they are called Republicans and Democrats) into office are accountable for their crimes, and commoners who commit fraud are at the least prosecuted for their crimes... and are usually put behind bars.
In dictatorships and nations on their slide downhill, however, the commoners are punished and the rules change to protect those in power.
This nation is somewhat unique, in that these changes are not important to the masses, since most are focused on reality shows and entertainers...
