Murtha Taking Devil May Care Attitude To Corruption Probes

The Feds may be circling uncomfortably close to Rep. John Murtha as they probe kickbacks to defense contractors and possible earmarks-for-campaign-cash deals. But the veteran Democratic power-broker doesn't seem to be sweating it. In fact, he's acting as defiant as ever.

A Murtha spokesman tells TPMmuckraker that the Pennsylvania congressman has not hired a lawyer in connection with the investigations.

Possible legal jeopardy aside, Murtha doesn't even seem inclined to rein in his penchant for dispensing earmarks to friendly outfits. Buried in a Wall Street Journal story (sub. req.) about the Pentagon spending bill that passed Murtha's Defense Appropriations subcommittee this week is the news that the bill contains 15 separate Murtha-secured earmarks, worth a total of around $77 million, for entities whose employees gave to the congressman's campaigns. One defense contractor, Virginia-based Argon ST Inc., will get $8 million. Argon's employees, and its political action committee, have given Murtha $46,600 in contributions since 2007. In all, the $636.3 billion contains more than 1,100 earmarks, worth a total of more than $2.7 billion.

Murtha was characteristically unapologetic about the earmarks. His spokesman told the Journal that the congressman was "proud to secure funding for businesses and organizations in our district that are delivering quality products and services to the Defense Department."

There appear to be several overlapping federal probes focused on a longstanding web of cozy dealings between Murtha, a handful of defense contractors with close ties to the congressman, and a now-defunct lobbying firm that was founded by a Murtha ally*. An earmark secured by Murtha in 2005 for a defense contractor has led to two guilty pleas in connection with a kickback scheme. A separate defense contractor, Kuchera Industries, which has close ties to Murtha, had its Pennsylvania headquarters raided by the Feds earlier this year. And the now-defunct PMA lobby firm -- which was founded by a former subcommittee staffer described by the New York Times as a Murtha "protege" -- also was raided by the FBI last year*. The Feds are said to be looking at whether it illegally tied campaign cash to earmarks. Murtha has directed almost $100 million to PMA's clients over the years, and has received millions in contributions from the firm's employees.

Still, Murtha's "je-ne-regrette-rien" stance perhaps shouldn't come as a surprise. Earlier this year, he told a local paper: "If I'm corrupt, it's because I take care of my district."

You don't think Murtha's corrupt? He's been on watch lists for ages and has been a potential powderkeg for the Democratic Party. Trying to discredit the Feds is a bit of a red herring, dontchathink?

Maybe he knows something about his health that the investigators are ignoring and he'd rather leave the slushfund to his heirs rather than turn it over to lawyers. I would appreciate the Feds checking that out before they spend untold more millions on this investigation, even though I'm willing to believe Murtha is the king of pay for play.

I would much prefer the Dems invite him to retire before he is indicted, but it appears Pelosi owes him, so that may never happen no matter how much embarrassment it may save.

These clowns have been in power for so long they have learned that, since their party is now in office, there will be little chance of actually getting in serious trouble for whatever crimes they commit... and when their party is out of power, it will still involve their members votes to do any harm.

The VIPs in Washington have a habbit of protecting their own... even if their own happen to belong to the other party.

Besides, "We the Voters" have allowed these crooks to pretty much exempt themselves from any ordinary crimes which commoners must not commit....

I would bet Murtha will never actually pay any consequences... since he is able to pretty much help control the flow of money going to many others due to his powerful military ties...

(Remember, those scales of justice are now there to weigh the money, not the law, as previously intended... IMHO

The downfall of every democracy in history has been that the voters have learned that they can vote themselves "Bread and Circuses".

The founders of the United States of America tried to account for this by instituting a "representative" democracy with the actual "voters" being responsible to the general public - who do not have a vote concerning any laws being considered or passed.

The real "voters" in the USA are the Senators and Representatives. They have already voted themselves the best health care system in the world - financed by the American taxpayer. They have voted themselves the best retirement system in the world (full pay for life after one term) - financed by the American taxpayer.

Now "We the People" are discovering that this is not enough - that our Representatives and Senators are selling their votes in order to amass a fortune for themselves by way of "Pay to Play" and "Campaign Donations" (Bribes).

If you watch him on the abscam tapes it is clear that he thinks he knows how obey the letter of the law while still cashing in. When offered a bribe he told them that that is not how it is done and that they will need to do something for his district rather than crudely offering him cash.

"When offered a bribe he told them that that is not how it is done and that they will need to do something for his district rather than crudely offering him cash."

Sounds like an honest Representative looking out for the interests of his constituents and his district.

"I represent my district, not myself. If you want my cooperation, you must help my district, not me personally."

Would that there were more Representatives and Senators like Murtha.

Zach:

Looking at your figures:

Murtha installed 15 earmarks totalling $77 Million out of 1,100 earmarks totalling $2.7 Billion.

Why are the Feds investigating him without investigating all the other earmark sponsors? Or, if the Feds are investigating the other Representatives who sponsored earmarks, why don't you say so?

The least you could do is detail who on the Defense Appropriations subcommittee placed how many earmarks with the value per Representative.
