Obama Won't Rule Out Indefinite Detention for Terror Suspects
President Obama will not rule out detaining terror suspects indefinitely, although he says it "gives me huge pause."
Obama, while saying he isn't comfortable using executive orders to detain prisoners, wouldn't rule it out during an interview with The Associated Press.
But he also said there are some detainees who don't fall neatly into existing categories for criminal prosecution in the United States or under international law. He said dealing with them is going to be one of the biggest challenges of his administration.

Please, Mr. President. Make the pause a full stop. We must dump this ongoing injustice - now! We can't toss our enemies into dungeons and throw away the keys. Once upon a time, we had a President who thought he was emperor, and evil men in his court spun around him the lie that he was infallible - like royal rainment made of thin air. This President wrecked countries and tortured people, and he imprisoned suspected terrorists without trial. But we've awakened from that fetid nightmare. The wicked wretch is dead - or, at least, GONE! Let's deep-six his ugly legacy. No matter what they've done, what crimes they've committed, they get their day in court - or they've won, they've destroyed us.

if you rule out disappearing "suspects," you might as well admit you're reserving the right to disappear anyone at all.

Oh goodie! When do we finally start using these authoritarian powers against the right-wing terrorists in our midsts? Or does this only apply to brown people?

If they can't be prosecuted I would much rather have these guys walking the streets under restrictive parole than returning them to their home country. The guys that were sent back to Yemen have been a destabilizing force in that country that is rapidly talibanizing. Even if you had a team of agents who were dedicated to following each parolee it would cost less than making a new legal system for these few individuals. But besides the cost the legal precedent would be a setback to civil rights.

It's going to be a big challenge for Obama to get through his term without making himself an accomplice in covering up the war crimes of his predecessor.
I think that game's already up. He has had enough time to commit ample crimes of his own.

What bothers me about all of this is the obviously ridiculous assertion that there is anyone in US custody that presents a mortal threat to the greatest and most powerful nation on the earth (by their own assessment). Give me a break!!!

The one change most needed in the USA is the return to the "Rule of Law". Obama has ruled that change out of bounds for his administration.
