Texas Tech Announces Gonzales Hire

Texas Tech has officially announced the hiring of Alberto Gonzales.

The press release, which says Gonzales will work as both a recruiter and teach a junior-level course on "contemporary issues in the executive branch," makes no mention of Gonzo's involvement in the U.S. attorneys scandal (among other things) or his subsequent resignation. Instead, it ends with, "...and later was appointed Attorney General."

Nice.

Specifically, Gonzales will be responsible for "recruiting and retaining first generation and underrepresented students," and will help plan a leadership training program for minority and first generation students at both Texas Tech and Angelo State University. In addition to his class, he'll also guest lecture for other courses.

"His own upbringing in Houston as part of a migrant family with eight children makes him qualified to tell underrepresented Texas students that college is possible," said Kent Hance, chancellor of Texas Tech. "He will help Texas Tech and ASU prepare our students for success and to be future leaders in the State of Texas and beyond."

One of the attorneys I work with went to Texas Tech law school. He's rather relieved that Gonzalez is teaching undergraduates. I wonder if he'll get any awkward questions from the students.

This will certainly make Texas Tech the laughingstock of the country's legal-education community. Just when I thought Texans had hit bottom in their idiocy, they come up with this.

Yes in the long line of fine Attorneys General I think Gonzales leads the pack for his ineffectiveness. No doubt he got the appointment just so his buddy, George W. Bush could get away with all his shenanigans. And the fact that he has no permanent job reflects how totally he sold out his scruples during his tenure. Bit price he is paying for his sell-out.

user-pic

No matter what question Gonzo may get, he doesn't recall the answer.

user-pic

Just remember, when a Texan tells you that Texas has its OWN laws... he really isn't kidding...

For those of you ever again thinking of voting for some candidate from Texas, you might want to recall this little fact... and the LAST time you voted a Texan into office...

user-pic

Did he pull his affirmative action strings for admittance?

user-pic

There has to be a clause for selective memory impairment.

Ordinarily, these guys get taken care of with wingnut welfare. Either they get a position at a "think tank" or get to be a consultant or lobbyist. If you are a lawyer, you slide into some law firm.

In the case of Gonzales, it sounds like he has had a tough time finding a job. Pretty incredible considering the guy was on the TX supreme court and was the Attorney General. No law firm will take him. You would think that a guy that stuck his neck out so far would get a better gig. I hear nobody will even give him a book deal.

Maybe he really is so creepy and evil that even the Republican welfare system rejected him?

user-pic

I think more likely even the legal community knows that many of his actions in office are indefensible, especially being asked to visit Ashcroft while recovering from surgery. I only hope that Mr Gonzalez can find a way to repent for his blindly following and trusting in those that he served. He has some serious repenting to do, and maybe that can be something he can give to the students of Texas Tech.

Texas is a RED state..non-ethical behavior, corruption and torture are acceptable there..

user-pic

Gonzales can't be a role model. He is a shonda for latinos.

user-pic

. . . Gonzales will be responsible for "recruiting and retaining first generation and underrepresented students," and will help plan a leadership training program for minority and first generation students . . .

I'd just like to point out that this sounds suspiciously like “affirmative action.” Why are those students being recruited and getting special treatment? Won’t they be taking up spaces that belong to white boys?

Questions: will these students one day be ridiculed for having had the temerity to go to college? Answer: only if they are Democrats. Republican minorities overcome a lot of hardships; Democrats have everything handed to them.

Sounds to me like a sympathy case -- bought and paid for. Sounds like the job is a make-work creation so Gonzales would have an officially-approved excuse for being on campus and drawing a paycheck.

user-pic

Basically, Gonzales is going from being the Attorney General of the United States to an underling in the admissions office at Texas Tech. Wow. Quite a fall.

But I guess his skills finally match his employment status.

This guy should be disbarred and in jail not teaching our kids. There is a related post at http://iamsoannoyed.com/?page_id=588

Oh dear God.

Thank you, Cyrano, for making me feel worse than I already did about reading this story.

Yes, I, too, attended Texas Tech School of Law...and by saying so I am opening myself up to potshots from you snark-o-holics. Try to remember that I am one of you.

What is strange is that Kent Hance was the guy who beat Bush as a Democrat back when Bush first ran for congress and lost. Hance sold his soul and became a lobbyist who did well while Bush was Governor. I did not realize that he ended up at Tech.

A couple of things to add:

The job is clearly low in stature and seems like an act of mercy. If Gonzales had been boasting about the job we would have heard about it in the mainstream media. This was kept pretty quiet (and once again, why I love sites like this one).

I will add that this is really too bad in that when I was there, the Dean of the Law School was a guy named Frank Newton who was something of a closet lefty. Newton did a very admirable job of recruiting kids who were first generation Americans or first generation college in their families. He had a good thing going.

And to further risk protesting too much, Dean Newton saw to it that our graduation speaker was one Barbara Jordan - I remember her speech well: "The Ethic of Responsibility" (which is available on line). Barbara Jordan was very well received and made me proud to be there.

And finally - didn't somebody around here suggest passing the hat to pay the first kid to answer every question to the first Gonzales exam with either "I don't recall" or "I don't remember"?

Now if you will excuse me, I must go throw up.

Guns up!

Barbara Joran is missed by those who were attentive adults during the House Watergate hearings.

user-pic

Liberty University must be terribly disappointed.

I am not defending Gonzales or making excuses, but Fratboy acted despicably when he threw Gonzo under the bus after Gonzo took the fall by committing perjury to protect Fratboy for the illegal acts that he ordered. Gonzo is stupid and guilty. Fratboy will never be held accountable for his acts.

"His own upbringing in Houston as part of a migrant family with eight children makes him qualified to tell underrepresented Texas students that college is possible," said Kent Hance, chancellor of Texas Tech.

Oh my God, HE HAS EMPATHY!

user-pic

Gonzo can teach:

Bedside Intimidation 301: How to pressure an attorney general in the hospital who has already given his signing authority to someone more competent than either of you, FAIL.

user-pic

Maybe they'll endow him with a chair that was previously thrown by their former basketball coach (Bobby Knight).

user-pic

Does the Coushatta Indian Casino get stuck with paying Gonzo's salary, or do they just bill Mike Ensign and Mandalay Bay too?

user-pic

One of Bush's rich friends must have promised a big donation to the school in return for hiring Gonzales.

user-pic

Id.

Mr. Gonzales will guest lecture at Tech on his area of expertise, Engineering Flow Calculations in Waterboarding.
