Emails Show Santorum Was Tipped To Affair The Day Before Ensign Went Public

The John Ensign story just won't go away -- and that's not good news for the Silver State philanderer.

Jon Ralston of the Las Vegas Sun has obtained emails sent by Doug Hampton which show two interesting things:

First, that just one day before Ensign publicly acknowledged his affair with Doug's wife Cindy this June, Doug had emailed former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum about it, and had told Santorum that he'd also informed Fox News. That revelation will add to speculation that it was Santorum who tipped off his friend Ensign that Hampton planned to go public.

And second, that Mike Slanker, the Ensign aide who ran the National Republican Senatorial Committee and later gave Hampton a job at his consulting firm, knew last summer about the affair. Slanker had previously told the AP he was unaware of the affair until Ensign publicly admitted to it.

Doug Hampton had earlier told Ralston that Slanker and his wife knew about the affair last year, and that Hampton had informed Santorum of it -- but the emails offer proof for his claims.

In the Santorum email, sent at 11:04 am on June 15th, Hampton writes that he is asking for the former senator's help "to resolve this terrible coverup." He also writes: "I am sending this note along to you because of your affiliation with Fox New (sic) and what i have put in motion with the letter I have sent Megyn Kelly at Fox News." Hampton attaches a separate document titled "US Senator," which appears to contain details of the affair.

Hampton appears aware that in going to Santorum, he may be tipping off Ensign about his plan to go public. He writes: "It is my strong request we speak prior to you calling John but realize I cannot control what you choose to do with the information."

The next day, Ensign would come forward to acknowledge the affair. Santorum has declined to say whether he told Ensign that Hampton had gone to the media.

As for the Slanker emails, written in July 2008, they mainly show the Slankers and the Hamptons struggling to deal with the affair's fallout on the friendship that had existed between the two couples. But they make clear that both Mike and Lindsey Slanker -- who worked with Mike at their consulting firm, November Inc. -- were aware of the affair at the time they were written, belying what Slanker had earlier claimed.

Ensign's senior staff has been jumping ship lately. And even the senator's dad is feeling the effects of the scandal.

"Isn't that ABC's replacement for General Hospital?"

No; I hear ABC is rolling out 'An Ensign in the Hampton' as a replacement for General Hospital.

An Ensign in the Hampton. That's hysterical!!!

I wonder, Will it perform as well as ABC (and Cindy) hopes? Will Vitter, Sanford et al, be merely making guest shots or will they be recurring performers? Will each episode begin with a Rod Serling-esque introduction by Rick Santorum? Will there be a bizarrely hypnotic Palin/Bachmann/Taitz hook-up? (Sorry about that one, but Palin needs the work.) So many questions.

Gadzooks! It turns out TPM has already published some of the probable plot lines for Season 1 of An Ensign in the Hampton:

At least Pennsylvania voters recognized what a nutcase Santorum actually is and voted him out of office, not that his replacement is much better - coming from a "political" family with the usual politicians sense of entitlement.

Aren't there legs to a story that involves hundreds of thousands of dollars in taxpayer money being paid knowingly by the GOP as hush money to Hampton, his wife and even a job for his kid?

Jeezus Gawd Almighty our media has failed us, miserably.

The media may have failed us, but they have certainly not failed those corporations who own them.

Let's not forget where Viacom, GE, Disney and News Corp sit politically.

Until we take it back, they and Wall Street also own the American government.

I agree with your statement, what I don't know is how to force Corporations to divest their news wings, especially with the corrupt Congress and Supreme Court we have. Our Government is in a permanent stasis where corporate oversight/governance is concerned and the Supremes will be in special session in September in a case that will give Corporations even more access to our public crooks than they currently enjoy (though how they can improve on 100% access is beyond me) by removing any barriers(?) Rehnquists one dollar, one vote ruling under the Brenner Court enabled.

RichardXX is telling you the solution, "take back our government."

There is ONLY one method that will work: Public finance of elections.

Everything else is watered down BS. Until we the people "own" the politicians the corporations will own us.

Read "Unequal Protection", by Thom Hartmann. That will give you the historical context, methods used, and the lengths the coporate world will go to remain in control. Like Mr Hartmann I'm NOT anti-corporation. I AM anti-Human Rights FOR corporations.

Again, the solution is very simple. Taxpayer funded elections. The greatest expense in a campaign is????? TV commercials. Who owns the airwaves? WE DO. Broadcast TV cannot broadcast without FCC permission. Make ALL political commercials FREE, and most of the money goes right out of the system.

Join with public finance groups and demand a fundamental change in the "business" of politics.

Around Nevada, he is known as Darth Slanker.

He certainly lives up to his name: slanker, rhymes with wanker, past tense of slinker, one who furtively hides in the shadows.

Or something like that.

Let's all not forget that prostitution is legal in Nevada. A $96,000 payment for sex, while above the going rate, is still legal there.

There may be questions concerning whether this prostitute was registered or was freelancing... whether or not her fees were exorbitant... but there is no question about its legality.

And, as for morality - again prostitution is legal in Nevada, therefore, it is the accepted legal morality.

Exactly. Why Rick?

Hampton writes to Rick, "I do know about you and your relationship with John."

What the heck does that mean?

Assume the worst.

With politicians, assuming the worst still leaves you thinking better of them than they deserve.
