Fran Townsend: We Discussed If Raising The Terror Alert Would Hurt Bush

Fran Townsend, Bush's Homeland Security adviser and CNN contributor, appeared on the network again this morning to refute Tom Ridge's new claim that he was pushed to raise the terror alert on Election Eve 2004 for political reasons.

She repeated much of what she said on The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer last night - namely, that "there was no discussion of politics whatsoever," but she added some new contradictory information about "discussion on the margins."

"The only discussions I recall were on the margin - there was concern that if the intelligence supported raising the threat level, it might actually [be] to the detriment of President Bush because people might perceive it as being political," said Townsend.

Here's the video:

According to Townsend, that debate primarily took place between John McLaughlin, then-acting director of the CIA, and John Brennan, Bush's head of the national counterterrorism center and Obama's current homeland security adviser.

Townsend also said that she agreed with Ridge at the time that there was no basis to raise the threat level, but she chaired the meeting because "we knew there were others who wanted to, so we wanted to have that conversation."

"What [Ridge's] book doesn't say is the most eloquent case for not raising the threat level was made by Secretary of State Colin Powell, not by Tom. And Bob Mueller, at great personal risk - remember, his boss John Ashcroft was advocating to raise it - Bob Mueller himself made an eloquent case not to raise it," she said.

The threat advisory system is currently under review by Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano - and Townsend herself is part of that process. Napolitano appointed Townsend and former FBI and CIA director Judge William Webster to co-chair the review task force. Townsend told CNN how she invited Tom Ridge and Michael Chertoff to give their opinions on it to the panel.

"This was two weeks ago, and Tom Ridge never mentioned any concerns - and he had some concerns - about politicization of the threat advisory system. You have to think this is personal, or publicity to sell more books."

CNN said they reached out to Ridge for comment as well, but "he's not doing any media right now."

To me, the only ex-Bush administration officials that have any chance at credibility on certain things are the whistleblowers.

user-pic

Gee, on a range of 0% - 100% additional support, we discussed whether raising the "terror" alert would hurt Bush's support by its actually resulting in less that 100% additional support.
.

user-pic

saw this - thought to myself, hmm, she's just loaded up with credibility..

And trust Roberts to let her blah blah blah without any real critical thought. /sigh

user-pic

Hmm. Here's a zen riddle: how does it affect one's credibility to move from a role in the Bush administration to a role as a CNN contributor?

Just askin'.

"The only discussions I recall were on the margin - there was concern that if the intelligence supported raising the threat level, it might actually [be] to the detriment of President Bush because people might perceive it as being political," said Townsend.
_____

Does that mean they wouldn't have warned the public, by "terror alert" or otherwise, if there was risk that the warning would be perceived as "political"?

And isn't that a political consideration?

Does that mean, say, that they would allow an attack to succeed so as not to hurt Bushit's "reputation"?

Fran may have chaired this meeting, but she could only have called it if Cheney approved. And where was Cheney? No one from his office was present? Difficult to believe that if Cheney thought that it was important, he didn't have anyone at the meeting. It would have been interesting if questions had been asked about the raising of the terror level in August. We now know that the info upon which that terror level was raised was some four years old. Who was in the meeting that made that decision? Who called the meeting?

When Fran Townsend resigned from the White House in 2007, she paid tribute to President Bush by saying: "In 1937, the playwright Maxwell Anderson wrote of President George Washington: 'There are some men who lift the age they inhabit, til all men walk on higher ground in their lifetime.' Mr. President, you are such a man."

In a speech in Saudi Arabia, Townsend used the identical quote to flatter King Abdullah.

It is difficult for me to take such a first class ass kisser seriously.

One word: Liar. How do these people sleep at night?

user-pic

One song:
Liar, liar, pants on fire/
Your nose is longer than a telephone wire

user-pic

It's easy: they have no conscience.

user-pic

So let me get this straight.

The conversation did NOT go like this:
"Let's raise the threat level for no reason in an attempt to influence our national election and stay in power."

Instead, it went like this:
"There might be threats to this country that would warrant an increase in the threat level, but we're not going to because it could hurt our chances in the election - since it might be seen as political."

In the first, you're terrorists. In the second, you're willing to let the nation be at greater risk of a terrorist attack, just to avoid a drop in the polls.

Uh. That's a "defense"?

user-pic

Makes you wonder why this point was not lobbed back at her by the interviewer. Either the interviewer was not bothering to think criticaly about what she said at all (being so used to that standard), or else just thought that both justifications would be just fine.

user-pic

When they say it isn't political, it's political.

Fran Townsend: We Discussed If Raising The Terror Alert Would Hurt Bush

...then we all looked at each other and started laughing and said "Nah, of course it will help him!" and so we went ahead and did it.

user-pic

But but but but what was it ever raised (or lowered) for??

Like what was going to happen if it stayed the same or didn't exist at all?

Is there something missing here?

What is this debate about?

It's about total manipulation of the masses.

Other than duct tape and plastic what the f--- did they say??

Be scared this much?? or be scared even more? or really be scared to the max ....of............what?

This was so planned and could not have been as fear generating as it was without total media involvement.
That's the mic/oil/med media by the way.

Good luck getting straight answers.

Where did those wonder alerts go to anyway?

user-pic

Townsend would make a great Fox News anchor. Her lack of knowledge, blind ambition, willingness to lie and photogenic appearance have given her a nice living, I'm sure.

user-pic

"This was two weeks ago, and Tom Ridge never mentioned any concerns - and he had some concerns - about politicization of the threat advisory system. You have to think this is personal, or publicity to sell more books."

Ah yes the tried and true republican favorite...they are disgruntled whiners who just wanna sell a book. You have to wonder how they just use the same lame bullshit excuses every time and get away with it. They will successfully launch the discredit campaign against Ridge, the media will repeat over and over and the story will be dismissed just as the republican crime family expects.

user-pic

Is it some sort of subliminal ploy for them to use phrases like "you have to think..."? As if, by them saying we have to, we automatically do?

Of course, it seems to work on the MSM "news" anchors (I'm talking to you John Roberts & Kyran Chetry)

user-pic

One must be careful to distinguish between "think" and "believe," because they say the first, but actually mean the latter.

user-pic

Fran Townsend is a LAIR. Always has been..always will be...

user-pic

What BBC Chicken Madness said above is completely correct. Her story, if taken at face value, does not stand up to any sort of plausibility or logic test. And as many others have pointed out, Townsend is a professional, serial liar. So of course it is not surprising that CNN hired her to help stack the deck of all "political discussion" on their network farther to the right. Of course one side in the "discussion" is simply habitually lying, and that would be Townsend's side. In fact it looks like CNN has found their full-time Robert Novak replacement.

To my knowledge Ridge and Townshend are being indicted for Hatch Act breaches. Ridge likely has other charges coming his way. RFID manufacturers are a dime a dozen, and short-range IR (infrared) always is more secure and privacy-respecting.

While in office Ridge favored Savy Technology--one RFID manufacturer and now owned by Lockheed for all programs where Savy's solutions could be adopted: credentialing and Secure Container Initiative. Ridge didn't finally leave office until 2/1/05, but he was appointed/accepted a Savy Technology Board of Directors post in 1/05 to reveal in the open his conflict of interest.

General Hayden--then head of NSA gave interviews to Fox News the day Ridge resigned and about 2 1/2 weeks later. Yesterday I gave an excerpt of the interviews as they pertained to Ridge in a former post. I left something out. In mid-Dec 2004 when Hayden said Ridge hadn't dedicated staff to medium and long-term planning, the interviewer asked twice why with this known, Ridge couldn't be given another chance to fix his mistakes. The answer both times was that he couldn't be.

The reason why was because Ridge was on Savy's payroll all along. The DHS was supposed to adopt the smart wallet tech standard (NIST's name--we the inventors think this is a terrible name) when its doors opened. The smart wallet can use RFID or IR (both are apart of our patent applications), and favors IR because of its security which results in strong privacy. Since Ridge was in Savy's pocket, he had fair consideration denied us because of our opposition to using RFID.

Prosperity comes with quality, so quality is our # 1 concern. Hence, using IR was our priority, not bending to Ridge and his lobbyist Assistant and Under Secretaries, their Deputies and Chiefs of Staff and Program Managers. The entire brood were in Lockheed's pocket, and Lockheed is a smart card manufacturer. Smart cards need RFID, because they can't fit IR on them.

Finally, Lockheed is a Russian-owned company. I was unable to confirm whether Savy was Russian owned prior to Lockheed's acquistion of it. Starting 12/1/01 we began declining the Kremlin's financial offers starting with a 100 % financing package that then was sweetened over the next 19 months, so Ridge did the Kremlin's biddings by denying us fair consideration to force us to become Russian. While his actions are treason it so far has seemed that his most severe charges when brought will be limited to bribery/corruption charges.

user-pic

I don't know if Fran Townsend is liar but she needs to stay out of the sun. The woman's skin looks like pork craklins (aka chicharrones here in California).

user-pic

why did you feel compelled to comment on a person's complexion? Is that the best you can do? If so, you might realize that you look like an ass-hole if that is all you have to offer. If your mind is incapable of contributing something about a statement or behavior of someone, you really should keep your superficial comments to yourself.

user-pic

Well, Here's the thing If they freely admit they discussed if it would hurt his ratings, does ANYONE really believe that helping his ratings didn't come up in the same conversation? I mean if the topic came up at all I would venture to guess that the help part was the original topic.
The Bush administration is slowly being revealed as perhaps the most corrupt in this Nation's history and we are still waiting for ALL the facts. Imagine what we'll eventually find out about war profiteering and contractors.

user-pic

Tom Ridge and Fran Townshend are caught-up in this corruption investigation. Link:

http://www.propublica.org/article/key-figure-in-cunningham-scandal-points-to-other-lawmakers-1203

Quote from Marcus Stern's article:

However, it did provide a tantalizing suggestion of another shoe to fall.

Wade answered questions related to "a large and important corruption investigation" unrelated to the Cunningham matter, wrote Jeffrey Taylor, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, and Howard Sklamberg, deputy chief of its Fraud and Public Corruption Section.

It added that "there have been, at this point, no charges filed."

user-pic

Of course, she's not lying about this, but she's editing the truth. The other part of that conversation, namely, will it be a benefit for Bush.

user-pic

Fran Townsend: We Discussed If Raising The Terror Alert Would Hurt Bush, then we all had a good laugh and went on pressuring Ridge to raise the Alert Level.

user-pic

I really had doubts on what really happened, and it seems that the discussion really seems to be doubtful on who is really telling the truth.

I let them raise the alert level even though it could have hurt me politically. That's just the kind of America-loving guy that I am.
