Chris Broughton, the man who brought an assault rifle and a handgun to the Obama event in Arizona last week, attended a fiery anti-Obama sermon the day before the event, in which Pastor Steven Anderson said he was going to "pray for Barack Obama to die and go to hell", Anderson confirmed to TPMmuckraker today.

Anderson also said Broughton had informed the pastor about his planned show of arms-bearing, but "he planned out the AR15 thing long before he heard that sermon," delivered Sunday August 16 at the fundamentalist Faithful Word Baptist Church in Tempe, AZ.

This is the second example of the gun-toters at the Arizona Obama event tied to the violent fringes of American life.

"I don't obey Barack Obama. And I'd like Barack Obama to melt like a snail tonight," Anderson said in the sermon.

The sermon, which was titled "Why I Hate Barack Obama" and also contained virulent anti-gay themes, continued:

... you're going to tell me that I'm supposed to pray for the socialist devil, murderer, infanticide, who wants to see young children and he wants to see babies killed through abortion and partial-birth abortion and all these different things -- you're gonna tell me I'm supposed to pray for God to give him a good lunch tomorrow while he's in Phoenix, Arizona?

Nope. I'm not gonna pray for his good. I'm going to pray that he dies and goes to hell.

Listen to the full sermon here:

Anderson told TPMmuckraker today that Broughton, who also has ties to right-wing groups, joined the church about three months ago.

The pastor said he encouraged Broughton to make sure he would not run afoul of any federal laws. And he insisted he was not encouraging acts of violence toward the president.

"No where in the sermon did I advocate vigilantism," Anderson said today, reached at the church. "It's a spiritual battle."

He continued: "I'd rather have him die of natural causes anyway, that way he's not some martyr. I'm praying for him to die just so he gets what he deserves."

The connection between Broughton and Anderson was first pointed out by the Phoenix New Times. During an appearance on the radio show of noted conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, Broughton mentioned that Anderson was his pastor.

On his blog, Anderson posted a video of Broughton at the Obama event under the headline "Brother Chris carries an AR to Obama event 'because he can'".

The post contains only this text: "Good job, Chris!"

Let's take the comparison further. Obama was a member of Wright's congregation, so it was fair to assume that Obama shared Wright's views -- that's what Fox News told us, right?) So it must be fair to assume that Broughton, as a member of Anderson's congregation, shares Anderson's views. So we have a guy who wants Obama to die bringing an assault rifle to a Obama event. Lovely.

Even if the MSM did cover this story, I suspect they'd gleefully point out that President Obama attended Wright's church for 20 years whereas Broughton had been a member of Anderson's church for a mere three months -- not enough time to become tainted.

Anderson makes a good point. Just because you explicitly hope and pray for someone's death, and constantly assure your flock that he is an agent of evil that God would want dead, doesn't mean you are in any way responsible if and when a member of your flock takes your words to heart.

Of course, this principle doesn't apply when we speak of such things as gay marriage, because the psychological and cultural effect of two married gay people living down the street from me would be to unhinge me and turn me into a raving, dangerous lunatic.

So remember: when a right-winger attempts to spread a message of hatred, that's okay, because he's not actually hurting anyone, and anyone who does something wrong because they're influenced by him (or claim to be influenced by him) is responsible for their own actions. But when two gay people get married, that's bad, because although they're not actually hurting anyone, anyone who does something wrong because they're influenced by them (or claim to be influenced by them) is a helpless victim of gay sin and the homosexual agenda. Got it?

Hmm... then what about this:

1 Timothy 2:1-2 (King James Version)

1 I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; 2 For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.

Never mind this:
Romans 13 (New International Version)

1 Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. 3 For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and he will commend you. 4 For he is God's servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God's servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. 5 Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also because of conscience. 6 This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God's servants, who give their full time to governing. 7 Give everyone what you owe him: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.

Hmmmm, this leads to an interesting question: If Bush's election proved that he was God's annointed, as any number of these holy rollers said at the time, then isn't Obama's election proof that he is also God's annointed? And in that case, what does it mean when you say that you hate God's annointed and want to see him die? Doesn't that put you with the crowd shouting "Crucify him!"?

When something happens that you don't like or support, than clearly its God testing you, or Satan tempting you.

The amusing thing to me about this entire episode is how Chris Broughton was clearly chosen to go to the protest with his guns because of his skin color. In the video he posted of his actions before the protest, he is seen with several white people preparing for his big moment. He was obviously chosen out of the group and just happened to be the one black guy.

Obvious and rather pathetic.

There's always been crazy sermons, helping them get a large national audience is a whole nother thing. What Pat Robertson couldn't accomplish with his Christian Broadcasting Network, the liberal blogosphere provides.

"Creating a buzz" most often welcomes vehement counter reaction. I.E., the more you bitch about a newbie Rush Limbaugh, the more tune in to see what they are all about. He complained to me the other day that some Lyndon La Rouche kooks have set up a table outside the bank, have pictures of Obama as Hitler, and start nasty arguments with bypassers all the time, and then the people complain to them they have to pass that gauntlet. I think blogs and media should send reporters there pronto to cover it, because nothing could be of more import than everyone knowing about it, and I bet that the publicity would quiet the situation down right quick--NOT!

Beat me to that point. We and the Brits have been imprisoning and deporting clerics for saying stuff just like this in houses of worship. Guess the critical difference is whether you say it in a house of worship with a steeple as opposed to one with a minarets.

Several months ago, I pointed out that the lunatic fringe of Christianity is as capable of attracting and denerating murderous terrorist fanatics as any other religion. All it takes is for its members to feel sufficiently alienated from the political process.

However, I said it in the context of being afraid that would be a likely consequence if they were frozen out of the Republican Party. I wasn't anticipating that the mere fact of not being in power due to having lost an election in a democracy would be sufficiently radicalizing to make them this crazy.

It is embarrassing to be associated by name of faith to such an individual and group. To be "Christian" by faith is to follow in the path of Jesus Christ, to bear His burdens and pain as He bore them, to accept His grace. Clearly, the Reverend and his associates do not conceive of themselves in this manner. I am not one to assume that I know the judgement of God nor how his vision of the world will be completed. I do believe you will find in the letters of Paul some stern admonitions against using His church for profane purposes. Reverent Anderson and his charges may have to answer for their profanity.

I admit that when I consider the parable of the vineyard workers, and how any may be accepted if they but believe, I'm irked. This Reverend might on his deathbed experience true repentance, be forgiven and taken up. That offends my human sense of "fair play." He ought at least do some purgatory first.

Thanks.

I agree, just want to point out - that may be exactly what they want, so they can create a violent confrontation.
I'd speculate it could be they'd like to become a rallying cry like Waco.
Ideally, in the process of investigating, authorities would find evidence of crimes for which they could detain the pastor, and perhaps open the eyes of some of his flock to his delusions.

Did he say the same about Bush when he had all those people put to death as Gov?
I don't think so.
But I as a tax payer, should not have to fork over more money because they get a tax exemption.
All these so called churches should be made to obey the law and any that are using their church for political purposes should lose the tax exemption.
That is the least we can do for our brothers.

What was wrong with the 9/11 hijackers, or the Taliban, or the Hindu extremists who killed Ghandi? What's wrong with the guy who shot Rabin and are threatening civil war if they try to uproot them from the land that "God" gave them in 1967?

Whether your religious beliefs lead you to take it literally or metaphorically, evil comes in three, and only three, forms: in league with the devil, posessed by the devil and deceived by the devil. Everything else is just human scale banal badness. These guys are the latter.

I listened to most of this sermon. In essence it says God and Pastor Anderson hate Obama, wanting him to die and go to hell, because Obama is a mass murderer of innocent babies. Interestingly, there is not a single passage in the entire Bible that says abortion is a sin. The only passage that even comes close is Exodus 21:22-25, which says if a man strikes a pregnant woman, causing her to have a miscarriage, he must pay her husband a fine.

This is who Ghandi was talking about. I feel bad for the vast majority of Chirstians who cringe at this man.

Also, the "worshipper" joined his "church" three months ago. So it's not like he can say that he knew the guy well enough that he wouldn't be taking shots at the president.

I think if this had happened with Bush in office, these bozos would have been extradited to a torturing country days ago.

Since I'm not a Christian, I can't really fault the guy for that. And I'd be a hypocrite if I faulted him for wanting Obama dead, since I felt (and still feel) the same way about George W. Bush and Dick Cheney.

The only difference, I guess, is that I'm not the one pretending to be a believer in the Prince of Peace.

Oh yeah, plus the fact that Anderson wants Obama dead for trying to save the economy and ensure adequate health care for all Americans, while I want Bush and Cheney dead for committing multiple war crimes.

Amazing. He accuses the cop of harassment because he says the cop is pointing the gun at people, which he doesn't do, then harasses a police officer for following the orders of his commanding officer, then acts outraged when the cop won't answer. "You work for me" bullshit. Has he ever been to Israel, where there are armed police and tanks ready to go at the airport.

This bizarre pastor is known on YouTube for his crazy sermon about men standing up to pee:

"He who pisseth against the wall"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qo3o4nfiG7A

Unfortunately, he mis-interprets what that means. That is not a complement to a man's masculinity; that term is an insult (comparing them to dogs) referring to people who are about to be slaughtered or who are about to face God's wrath. Every instance of the use of the term is with men who are about to be killed.

Hey, Pastor Anderson, it's called Romans 8.

You know:

"Submit unto the governing authorities, because they have been ordained by God."

And, I'm an atheist who can quote that to you, as well as telling you Paul wrote that under Nero Caesar, not under the democratically elected President Barack Obama.

And, no, he didn’t pray for Nero’s death while “submitting.”
