We've all seen those stories where a careless politician gets a little too candid when speaking into a hot mic. But this one's really in a whole different league.
[RELATED SLIDESHOW: TPM'S HISTORY OF THE SEX-SCANDALOUS FALL OF THE MODERN CONSERVATIVE MOVEMENT]
Michael Duvall is a conservative Republican state representative from Orange County, California. While waiting for the start of a legislative hearing in July, the 54-year-old married father of two and family values champion began describing, for the benefit of a colleague seated next to him, his ongoing affairs with two different women. In very graphic detail.
For instance:
She wears little eye-patch underwear. So, the other day she came here with her underwear, Thursday. And so, we had made love Wednesday--a lot! And so she'll, she's all, 'I am going up and down the stairs, and you're dripping out of me!' So messy!
Duvall's sophomoric braggadocio, of course, was picked up by the microphone in front of him, and wound up on a tape for the legislature's in-house TV station. From there it was sent to a local news station, KCAL, which ran this full report last night:
According to both KCAL and the OC Weekly, an alternative weekly in Orange County, the woman who wears the "eye-patch underwear" is Heidi DeJong Barsuglia, a lobbyist for an energy company, Sempra Energy. Duvall is vice chair of the Committee on Utilities & Commerce.
In the tape, Duvall also says of Barsuglia:
So, I am getting into spanking her. Yeah, I like it. I like spanking her. She goes, 'I know you like spanking me.' I said, 'Yeah! Because you're such a bad girl!'
The OC Weekly explains that it identified Barsuglia as the woman Duvall was talking about because Duvall also said:
And so her birthday was Monday. I was 54 on June 14, so for a month, she was 19 years younger than me. I said, 'Now, you're getting old. I am going to have to trade you in.' And she goes, '[I'm] 36.' She is 18 years younger than me. And so I keep teasing her, and she goes, 'I know you French men. You divide your age by two and add seven, and if you're older than that, you dump us.
The hearing took place on July 8th. OC Weekly looked at voter registration records and confirmed that Barsuglia turned 36 on Monday July 6.
Separately, KCAL named Barsuglia, citing sources.
According to the OC Weekly, Duvall and Barsuglia have been seen "arm-in-arm" at fund-raising events, and even shopping for groceries together near the Capitol.
One Sacramento staffer told the paper:
Their relationship is the worst-kept secret in Sacramento. He's old and fat. She's hot, blonde and about 20 years younger. He could have never gotten a woman like that before he got this job.
As for the second woman, whose identity remains unconfirmed, Duvall said in the recorded conversation:
Oh, yeah, Sher, Shar, Shar. Oh, she is hot! I talked to her yesterday. She goes, 'So are we finished?' I go, 'No, we're not finished.' I go, 'You know about the other one [Barsuglia], but she doesn't know about you!'
This story, of course, just wouldn't be the same if Duvall -- a former mayor of Yorba Linda and the owner of an insurance company -- weren't known as a strict conservative and a staunch defender of family values. But alas, he is.
As the OC Weekly reports, Duvall has "blasted" efforts to promote gay marriage, and got a 100 percent score from the Capitol Resource Institute, which describes its mission as to "educate, advocate, protect, and defend family-friendly policies in the California state legislature". In March, a spokeswoman for the group called Duvall "a consistent trooper for the conservative causes," adding that "for the last two years, he has voted time and time again to protect and preserve family values in California."
In addition, says the paper:
He has offered a law to alter the First Amendment rights of Americans by banning anti-war activists from putting the names of fallen soldiers on T-shirts with messages such as "Bush lied" on the front and "They died" on the back; he observed that the dead soldiers fought to protect freedom, and "opportunists" should not be allowed to "exploit" the sacrifices with political messages opposing war.
Throughout the day yesterday, Duvall evaded reporters' efforts to talk to him about his comments, fleeing several times down the Capitol's corridors.
The voice-mailbox for Duvall's Capitol office was full. Calls by TPMmuckraker to Duvall's district office, to Barsuglia, and to Sempra Energy's public relations department were not immediately returned.
Looks like we could soon have another entry for the slideshow!
Late Update: Duvall has apologized. But that doesn't mean he's escaping punishment.
Late Late Update: Duvall resigns from office.

The overabundance of neanderthal Republicans are what made me flee from Orange County. I love the place... couldn't stand the people. If your average OC Republican finds out you're a Democrat... they HATE you and want to destroy you. It's really that bad there.
I'm going to have to start reading the Register to watch this play out... should be fun.

amusing that you picked that up in 48 hours.
I am generally an open-minded, live-and-let-live Democratic liberal, so I went into OC prepared to accept my new probably-Republican neighbors.
Wow. Was I naive. At work I was bombarded regularly with idle co-worker chit-chat about the most obnoxious GOP talking points of the day, as if they assumed I was part of the cult. I picked up very quickly to keep my fucking mouth shut about it if I wanted to keep my job.
Outside of work, I grew to loathe the strict conformity and overall whiteness of the surroundings and the people (with the possible exception of Santa Ana, but I wasn't in that area, I was more in the Irvine/Forest Hills area... not far at all from Saddleback Church...) Hell, the place just exudes a sort of stifling right-wing conformity. I was not at all imagining it.

Sadly, that sounds a lot like Lancaster County, PA...I once worked for Charles Chips in the accounts receivable dept...they handed me this thing (this was early in Clinton's 1st term) about God, how the USA is Jesus' Country, etc. etc. I made a face and said this doesn't have any place in the workplace. They looked at me like I was on drugs. Then, later, my boss calls me in and asks why I didn't sign this - you know, just to "get along." I was fired 2 weeks later.

As a born-and-raised OC liberal, I must express the greatest schadenfreude imaginable at these kinds of incidents. However, I would like to go on record as saying that the tide in Orange County is (albeit slowly) changing. While it is certain that the nexus of powerful businessmen and scary megachurches (Saddleback, Mariners, Crystal Cathedral, and the Newport Beach Mormon Temple) has long ensured the redness of the county, it is amazing to see the amount of change that's taken place in just the last five to ten years.
Whereas bumper stickers for Gore or Kerry were an endangered species the last two election cycles, it is surprising how much Obama support there really is here (although it is sadly true that we have to be somewhat quiet about it). McCain took Orange County only by a 51-47 margin, compared to Bush in 2004 taking it 60-39 and in 2000, 56-40. All this is just to say that OC (please don't call it THE OC) is not such a black-and-white (or red-and-blue) county as it may seem.

Hmm, methinks you have an active imagination, and read far more into the comments than were stated. It goes without saying that a person in his position is required to behave with a modicum of social responsibility--that is part of the definition of 'leadership'--to display public hypocracy is additionally reprehensible--but to risk your marriage, your public office, you reputation, and your career for anything less than Helen of Troy: stupid, stupid, stupid.

This very morning I was contemplating that sanctimonious asshole Mark Sanford and how he wants forgiveness for his transgressions. This is the same asshole who doesn't hesitate to shove the 'eye for an eye' Old Testament down everyone's throat. The same Old Testament which demands that adulterers be stoned to death.
I feel no sympathy nor forgiveness for those who repeatedly condemn others because they don't love the 'right' people or because they too have had moral failings.
It is just like a wrong-winger to have no empathy for others until they find themselves in the same boat, then suddenly they demand forgiveness because Jeebus loves them.

There's no hypocrisy here at all. Republicans simply believe that they deserve a different standard than liberals, do. Republicans are part of the ruling class generally, you see, or at least believe they are, so when they misbehave, it's not a potential threat to society the way misbehavior by *those* people might be...
It's the equivalent of how, when someone is walking down the street with a traffic cone on their head, talking to themselves, you describe them as "eccentric" if they're rich and "crazy" if they're poor.
So when a liberal or Democrat cheats on his wife, it's "indicative of a pattern of immortality and dishonesty". When a Republican or conservative cheats on his wife, it's "an isolated, one-time-only moment of weakness for which Jesus has already accepted my heartfelt apology."

It really makes one wonder why there are so many young, female lobbysists and if they curry favor like this routinely or not doesn't it?

I doubt that there's that much direct sexual quid pro quo in lobbying (although I could be wrong) but there's certainly a strong element of late-middle-aged men liking it when attractive younger women pay lots of respectful attention to them, stand close to them and make them feel all virile. Marketing departments the world over have got that one wired -- just look at the booth staff for any trade show.

At that time, the inability to type was seen as a dead giveaway that these women were more than just office workers.

Divine Intervention Pt. III
God Got Involved Again
The Lord promised me that He would continue to reveal Satan's tools in all their glorious deceit and hypocrisy as He did earlier first with the "C" Street coven of Sanford, Ensign, Coburn, and Pickering, then following up with His recent round of disclosures about the GOP's two main "Great White Hopes" in this year's elections, Christie and McDonnell, but I didn't realize that He was going to pick up the pace and ratchet up the intensity of His Divine Intervention.
Even the greatest skeptic must now understand that God got involved, as Jules Winfield of Inglewood put it, because this latest revelation could not have been so perfectly engineered by mere mortals to shine the brightest possible clean light of day into the black heart of darkness, the squalid rat's nest that is today's Republican Party. (As in "Party Hearty" as Mike Duvall might put it.) The Lord said He meant to make the GOP's utter depravity undeniable to even the dimmest bulb, the most closed mind in the fetid pool of Republican dupes, but I did not fully comprehend the intensity of His wrath at the GOP's continual taking of His Name in vain until now.
The Lord told me He would not relent until He uncovered every one of Satan's minions as the dissolute demon he is if they dared enter the public arena, but now He has revealed to me that He will not stop until the Republican Party has been banished from this earth forever. It has been more than forty years now since the GOP made its last great contribution to the public life of our great nation when Dirksen and Halleck delivered the large majority of their Republican votes in Congress to combine with the Northern Democrats to overcome the Dixiecrats' filibusters of LBJ's Civil Rights Bills of the 1960's. Since that time, the GOP has been relentlessly negative with not one redeeming moment of public virtue or democratic resolve to its credit.
As The Lord revealed to me, He allowed Satan to use the Republican Party and the fundamentalist churches to try to destroy the American experiment of trusting the divine gifts of compassion and rationality in every human being. God imposed this sore trial upon His New Chosen People to test their faith, but He now is satisfied that sufficient of His New Chosen People have held steadfast in their faith in the Divine Spirit in every human being. He sees that they have confirmed His faith in them by resisting every temptation in Satan's evil Republican repetoire of racism, sexism, nativism, homophobia, greed, selfishness, and control for lo these forty years. Now the day of deliverance is upon us.
Oh, ye of little faith, Behold the Work of The Lord!

DON'T BE A SHEEP. If you are a Republican who thinks you have "lost a point" today, or if you are a Democrat who thinks you have "won a point" for your side, then you are no better than the idiotic Raider Nation. Republicans: Your guy may have done some bad things. Get over it, it was his choice. Democrats: So much for tolerance, peace and love. At least some Republicans HAVE values, even if they can't live up to them all the time. Is it better to be a squirming little weasel that lies to everyone's face? Grow up all of you and realize that BOTH sides are idiotic. Think for yourself. I only wish the reporter in the video worked as hard to chase after Democrats as he apparently does Republicans.
