We weren't aware that Glenn Beck's unique brand of conservative messianic zeal and conspiracy-minded racial paranoia required any particular intellectual underpinning.
But a fascinating article in Salon reveals that a book by a Mormon "historian" deemed too extreme even by the modern conservative movement -- which argues that the U.S. constitution is based primarily on natural law -- has played a major role in Beck's "thinking."
For several years, Beck has actively promoted "The 5000 Year Leap," by the late Cleon Skousen, on his radio and TV shows, and he recently wrote the foreword for a newly-released edition of the book, which was first published in 1981.
For more on this singular figure from the annals of the American far-right -- who appeared for a while to have been consigned to ignominy -- and about Beck's strange rediscovery of him, read Salon's story.
Late Update: As reader J.S. notes, Beck isn't the only conservative leader with a taste for Skousen. In 2007, then-presidential candidate Mitt Romney expressed his affinity for his fellow Mormon.

So in his present activities, the fraud Glen Beck is being inspired by -- and is actually stealing all his shtick from -- the fraud Cleon Skousen.
Why am I not suprised?
Beck doesn't have the brainpower to make this shit up himself. He had to be stealing it from someone.
Thanks for the Salon article link.

Just finished reading all three pages of this most excellent salon.com article; came in here to post about it. Ya beat me to it.
Three whole pages...and I only go to salon for the comics.
Some incredibly glib and revealing quotes from the article, ABOUT Mr. Skousen:
"Skousen's personal position," wrote a dismayed [Carroll] Quigley, "seems to me perilously close to the 'exclusive uniformity' which I see in Nazism and in the Radical Right in this country. In fact, his position has echoes of the original Nazi 25-point plan."
[Carroll Quigley and Louis C. Midgley] accused Skousen of "inventing fantastic ideas and making inferences that go far beyond the bounds of honest commentary."
Members of the ultraconservative American Security Council kicked him out because they felt he had "gone off the deep end." One ASC member who shared this opinion was William C. Mott, the judge advocate general of the U.S. Navy. Mott found Skousen "money mad ... totally unqualified and interested solely in furthering his own personal ends."
Money mad...totally unqualified...interested solely in furthering his own personal ends...inventing fantastic ideas...making inferences that go far beyond the bounds of honest commentary...
Sounds just like a certain rightwing nutjob I know. His name is right on the tip of my tongue...

With a skull full of grey matter that's been pickled by the mythology of the Mormon cult and who-knows-what in the way of chemical abuse, it's no surprise that Beck has beer-bonged every drop of Skousen-flavored Kool-Aid.

Our country is in for a few very interesting Obama years. It seems like you folks are " all in " for the ride, no questions asked - no questions answered. I am retired in Hawaii but did work during several Presidentual years. There was a lot of differences in the workintg world during Ragen and Carter, but you have to be there to get it.

shmingey shmoingy bloop de doop. I have nothing to say, but I love my obnoxious 21st century black face or reverse black face avatar and I'm going to chime in anyway. my frothing hate for obama has nothing to do with race so don't look too deeply into my avatar that changes his color. I hate obama because he's a communist and I'm not so sure he is really an American citizen. yeah, that's why

Hi. Just a quickie....where the heck were you when George Bush was Bankrupting the country and lying his way to 4000 dead and 10000 maimed Americans in Iraq?
My guess is you were sitting on your couch, not giving a rats ass.
What a shocker that you show up when we elect a Black Democratic President and start whining about "your America".
You people are transparent.

"Our country?" What a minute - you're from Hawaii? Why, that's not even part of America; according to Kookie Roberts, it's exotic & foreign, and some birthers think it's a county in Kenya!!
PS - Now that you're retired, maybe you can take the time to learn how to spell and/or type...and think beyond what you're told to think.

I was there during those years. Reagan was a disaster unless you were a corporation or a rich person.
The end of democracy in this country as we knew it, ended on January 20, 1981.

We should pick a sparsely-populated state and turn it into a giant non-stop live-action roleplaying game based on "Red Dawn", where Bleck and Dush and all the rest of the idiot servantes can pretend there's an oppressive Obama government out to destroy them and ravish their daughters.
Or maybe just a cabin in the woods for Bleck and his boyfriends. Anything to keep them out of our hair.

It shouldn't be surprising to any of us the mainstream attention someone like Beck receives. But once this stuff is linked together, shouldn't it at least begin to discredit these wackos if in no other place than the MSM?
Look at the lengths they've went to just to lie about their tea bagger protest.

Only when it suits their political agenda.
Utah became a state only AFTER the LDSers "officially" de-sanctioned polygamy.

The more time and webspace you dedicate to Beck, the better it's for him and Fox 'News'.

Is Salon not the media? Is TPM? What a worthless descriptive phrase "the media" is. It can criticize anything that's in and not in it. Is every publication in the world supposed to debunk the myths of Glenn Beck? If we are going to complain about something let's complain about something a little bit more tangible. THE LEFT THE LEFT IS TRYING TO DESTROY US. It's the same thing.

Glenn Beck's only world view is predicated on what he needs to do to make a boat load of money. He doesn't believe in anything or he would not be able to spew the swill he puts out.

So Glen Beck finds wisdom and spiritual solace in the ravings of a paranoid, delusional fear-monger -- and you call this news?

I watched a clip of Beck's show last night on Olbermann. I am blown away by how fucking crazy this guy is. I can't even imagine the dumbest of the dumb falling for anything he has to say. It is also interesting that sponsors are pulling back every day and yet his ratings are sky high. It blows my mind.

I think Beck appeals to the same geriatric demographic that believes they actually won a million dollars when they get a magazine contest envelope in the mail addressed to "resident."
