In a strongly-worded statement today, the Congressional Tri-Caucus, which represents three minority caucuses, denounced a call by four GOP lawmakers for an investigation into whether Muslim "intern spies" have infiltrated the Hill.

"These charges smack of an America of sixty years ago where lists of 'un-American' agitators were identified," said Reps. Michael Honda (D-CA), Barbara Lee (D-CA), and Nydia Velazquez (D-NY). They are the chairs of the Asian Pacific American Caucus, the Black Caucus, and the Hispanic Caucus, respectively.

The statement names the four Republican members who yesterday filed a formal request with the sergeant at arms to look into whether the Council on American Islamic Relations, which they claim is tied to Hamas, has planted interns on national security committees. The charge is based on a book called Muslim Mafia, written by a man who the Tri-Caucus labels "an anti-Islamic activist."

The Tri-Caucus statement says: "The idea that we should investigate Muslim interns as spies is a blow to the very principle of religious freedom that our founding fathers cherished so dearly."

Here's the full statement, which was released on behalf of the entire caucus:

Four of our colleagues, Reps. John Shadegg (AZ), Paul Broun (GA), Trent Franks (AZ) and Sue Myrick (NC) recently requested that the House Sergeant at Arms to launch an investigation of the civil rights group CAIR, or Council on American-Islamic Relations, to determine whether it was placing staff and interns in key Congressional offices who they fear are acting as "spies."

This proposed investigation coincides with the launch of a book by Dave Gaubatz, an anti-Islamic activist and author of the book "Muslim Mafia: Inside the Secret Underworld that's Conspiring to Islamize America." It features an introduction by Rep. Myrick, and was written after Gaubatz posed as an intern at CAIR in an effort to "infiltrate" the group.

These charges smack of an America of sixty years ago where lists of "un-American" agitators were identified. We should be affirming the importance of diversity and tolerance for all interns and staff who serve in Congress without suspicion of being identified as "spies."

The idea that we should investigate Muslim interns as spies is a blow to the very principle of religious freedom that our founding fathers cherished so dearly. If anything, we should be encouraging all Americans to engage in the U.S. political process; to take part in, and to contribute to, the great democratic experiment that is America.

We all have experienced the sting of discrimination and we know that there will be challenges ahead. But our message should be firm that the America we believe in welcomes people of all backgrounds to the U.S. Congress.

We ask these charges be disavowed and we issue a hearty welcome to interns and staff of all creeds, color, ethnicities and sexual orientation.

The alternative would be for the Democrats to embrace this - expand the inquiry to include interns from the Israel lobby and the heavy placement of students from dominionist outfits like Regent and Liberty University. The latter are a much clearer threat to our government - while the only evidence against any Muslim interns is Republican paranoia, the dominionists' goal of overthrowing the government and replacing it with a Christian version of sharia law is well known.

The principle is actually much worse than McCarthyism, though the attack is on a much smaller scale. This is casting suspicion on all Muslim's regardless of their political beliefs. At least McCarthy had a conceptually plausible case.

Why isn't the Plain Vanilla Caucus offended by Myricks's slur against Muslims? The Asian Pacific American Caucus, the Black Caucus, and the Hispanic Caucus shouldn't have to bear the burden alone.

Reps. John Shadegg (AZ), Paul Broun (GA), Trent Franks (AZ) and Sue Myrick (NC). I'll get started working on wanted posters for distribution in their states.

Just before 9/11 we where flying muslims into the our counrty by the dozens form eastern Europe. Clinton bill gave them: flight fare with escort, housing, welfare, food stamps and education expences (flight lesssons).
I was returning with my family from Italy and about one half the airliner was refugees. This was pre 9/11 and the muslims where not good passengers and did not follow the flight crews orders, I did not think we here going to get home and was making plans with others passengers about protecting our families.
Once again the Democrats have the stage and are taking us to the brink.

Yer funny! I won't make fun of your grammer and whatnot because English may not be your first language and I'd hate for you to feel self-conscious about posting your entertaining psuedo-rants.

In the unlikely event that you are in reality an uneducated bigot, STFU.

You're not even speaking with any intelligence whatsoever. "I was on a plane load of white people and they all misbehaved and right then I knew we were headed down a terrible road...those darn ol republicans and their ungrateful white people"...now how stupid does that sound? Maybe as stupid as what you said possibly?????

can we begin to have some honesty in this country now by the media?

Its time to put the light on the republican party for what it has become, the home of racists and biggots.
no one on the right can get elected in prts of this country without direct appeals to those emotions.

in fact it is only hate of anyone non-white that keeps the base of the republican party alive.

everyone from fox news to palin understands that and itss time everyone else does too.

violence will surly come soon when words no longer appease them.

This is obviously the peter principle at work in this case for these four republican loons. The quote from Sue Myrick should give away the whole scheme - she had something to do writing the introduction or pre-amble or inside cover verbiage, or something and wants everyone in the republican party to know it..

These folks obviously have no idea why they are in DC and don't really care what the rest of us say. They are in DC at taxpayer expense for the next year or so and they gotta get cracking on making their millions.. These are the kind of scum that should be run out of town and never allowed to return or run for office again - by law. Give me a tea party to crash and make a speech so I have a reason to call for a congressional limo today..Gotta get them Govt. perks while I can and time's a wastin....

The Gang of Four has apparently caused the Congressional Muslim Staffers Association to take its Facebook page. Way to go, Myrick et al!

A Fox News story gives the stats. The House Intelligence Committee does not accept interns. The Homeland Security Committee has not had a CAIR intern for at least three years, and possibly never. The Judiciary Committee has not had a CAIR intern since May.

I'm sure the Gang of Four knew how many interns CAIR placed on any of these committees before they instigated their witch hunt. Since most of the Muslim congressional staffers work for Democrats, it is pretty obvious the Gang of Four is out to smear one or more Dems in Congress.

The Gang of Four's next step will probably be a demand that all Muslim congressional staffers who were previously associated with CAIR be investigated. I have no doubt Sue Myrick already has a list of their names.

You know the Bircher drill: Catholics are Papists. They're Papalbots and will do any of the bidding of Rome over Amurica.

Unlike radical right-wing Christians...who nevah take any unquestioned orders from a pulpit.

Get off the Internet until you've raised your IQ enough to speak understandable English, please. This site is pleasantly lacking in knuckledraggers that speak every language but the one we speak in this country, and we'd like to keep it that way.

A retort from a co-author of "The Muslim Mafia" @
http://www.muslimmafia.com/2009/10/tri-caucus-vs-anti-terror-caucus/
alleges that T.P.M. mis-identified the intern & that Cong. Myrick did not write the book's introduction.

Not that it matters.
