Dick Cheney told FBI investigators that his response to hearing that Joe Wilson had been sent to Niger to assess whether Saddam had tried to buy yellow-cake was that it was "amateur hour" at the CIA.
That's according to a summary of the FBI's interview with Cheney, which was conducted as part of Pat Fitzgerald's investigation of the leak of Valerie Plame's name. The document was just released by the Justice Department, thanks to a lawsuit by CREW.
In his interview with the FBI, conducted in May 2004, Cheney frequently claimed to be unable to remember key details from the Plame episode.
You can look through the documents here, and tell us what else you find.
Update: For instance, the FBI agent writes, in reference to Wilson's famed New York Times op-ed:
The vice president is relatively certain that he spoke to someone about the article but he cannot remember exactly who it was.
Also: Cheney "advised that he has no idea" who leaked Plame's name to Bob Novak.
And: When Cheney then spoke to then-CIA director George Tenet about Wilson's CIA-approved trip to Niger, "he had a sense that the DCI [Tenet] was defensive and embarrassed about the issue and had not known what was going on with regards to this mission."
And: Cheney said he probably discussed Wilson -- but not Plame --with Condi Rice, Karl Rove, and Andy Card.
And: "He does not recall any discussion with Libby of perceived nepotism associated with Wilson's selection for the CIA assignment."

How ironic are those comments? The real "amateur hour" was Dick Cheney and John Bolton and Douglas Feith and Donald Rumsfeld trying to start up their own little CIA in the Pentagon, called the "Office of Special Plans". It was their amateurish and utterly un-intellectual attempt to make the "facts" fit their preconceived notion of reality that has, to date, helped to kill tens to hundreds of thousands of people needlessly and ruined our national military credibility.

The OSP wasn't the first time a number of those characters were engaged in a ideologically-motivated nonsensical "intelligence" analysis system - ever heard of Team B?
Team B was essentially the Cold War's version of the OSP, and would have pretty much ended the world if anybody had taken them seriously. A favorite comment about their report:
Of course, they were wrong. Reading commentary on the issue, one can sometimes forget *which* war is being referred to, as many of the players are the same (Rumsfeld, Bush I, Wolfowitz, etc) and the conclusions are just as far-out.

I think a lot of us re-learned about the whole "Plan B" shenanigans a few years ago as the full extent of the neo-con bamboozlement was revealed, but thanks for reminding us yet again.
I think the key thing to think about with regards to Plan B, is that they were taking already over-hyped CIA estimates of Soviet strength (it's always in the Pentagon's interest to exaggerate threats in order to justify funding) and regarding them as insufficiently hysterical about the Soviet threat.
Plan B would have had the US foolishly waste resources to counter very, very highly exaggerated or completely fabricated Soviet threats. It would also have intentionally provoked a WW3 showdown with the USSR, on the assumption that the Soviets were gaining a strategic advantage on the US which would soon be insurmountable; therefore, better to have a war we might win now, than one we would surely lose later on.
This sort of nihilistic thinking is what led to Germany's enthusiasm to get its Great War (WWI) on.

...and the neocons will never get over having been exactly wrong about the USSR.
Plan B said the US had 10 years' time before the USSR gained an insurmountable strategic advantage. Instead, the Berlin Wall came down in fall 1989 and the USSR quietly folded up shop on Christmas 1991.

Speaking of Germany and the USSR, after WWII the Nazi's extensive spy network in Russia was largely absorbed by the CIA. Many were war criminals and ideologically Nazis through and through. Knowing that a failure to produce intel could lead to a loss of status, potentially prosecution, or being given up to the Soviets, many fabricated intel outright. Some even rose to prominent positions in the CIA during the Cold War.
That's another twist on the whole bizarre neo-con story: that former nazis did so much to exacerbate cold war paranoia, often on behalf of neo-cons, whose ideology, especially preemption, is largely shaped by the trauma of the holocaust.
Totally bizarre.

Nah!!!! The real amateur hour was having Cheney as his vice president. Well now that I looked at the phrase, in this one instance, "VICE" does seem to reflect the appalling criminal mind that Cheney had. Of course, G. W. does not get off. He is the slothful kind that allowed Cheney's behavior and thus ruining the reputation of our party for years to come.

Yes indeed! Cheney's statement surely reaks of silliness. I used to have this little retarded friend when I was in the first grade. When I was making unkind statements of others, he would remind me, "when you point you finger at others" he always used to say, "Look when you point your finger at someone else, you always are pointing your thumb at yourself." And he was right!

True, but then Cheney has never conquered the idea of bad mouthing others before one is near perfect always reminds others of one's shortcomings. Although I doubt Cheney has much insight to the damage he did in his role as the Bush advisor and now for his inability to keep his mouth shut. G. W. has such class when he does not run down the next administration but alas, Cheney just blabs on and on.

The ONE thing we KNOW.... Dick Chaney is DISTURBED!!! Well ... more like ... INSANE!! See below how disturbed he is ... twice in just 3 sentences from this article.
---Cheney said The New York Times piece was disturbing. Cheney said he was most disturbed because it was now being made to look as though the vice president had personally sent Wilson on the trip. The vice president said that all he had done was to make a legitimate inquiry of a CIA briefer in February 2002 about Niger and Iraq.--
I as a voting US citizen am DISTURBED too!! DISTURED that the RNC/Repub/Conservatives/Supporters continue to present (hoist upon) the American peoples DISTURBED individuals for elective office ... Bush/Cheny, McCain/Palin ... not to mention the cast of characters in the propaganda arm (Fox "News")!

Its been my constant contention that Fitzgerald let Cheney off the hook, and, I might add, Karl Rove. Fitz allowed Rove to return to the Grand Jury 4 or 5 times to explain or expand on his previous testimony. Rove probably committed perjury but was given chances to get off the hook by Fitz.
These papers will be compared to records of interviews of others involved.
And this is what Obama doesn't want to investigate.

Obama should receive no mercy for his continued desire to let Cheney's crimes slide. We can add to the irony of the former VP calling the CIA "amateur hour" when Feith- aptly called "the stupidest fucking man on the planet"- was his idea of a professional (!)- the irony of a President who doesn't seem to understand the clusterfuck he inherited in Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and the US from this amateur Torquemada.
In fact, Obama should be prosecuted for his collusion in covering up the crimes of this predecessor. I think his drone exploits in Pakistan qualify as war crimes under the GC.
Forget amateurs and professionals. I will be happy to see a non-war criminal occupy the WH. I doubt I will see that in my lifetime. Failing that I would like to see them prosecuted by a professional!

Sadly the crimes that Cheney may (most likely) have committed against any number of U.S. statutes and against international law are not going to establish any groundwork for a prosecution of the "Dick" head.
What we must do is, be sure that the "revisionist" in chief, young Ms. Liz Cheney is not given any opportunity to recreate an alternative reality.
Liz Cheney is dead wrong about virtually everything she has spoken about. She should be muzzled.

Unfortunately, with every passing day, more and more crimes committed by Dick Cheney and his henchmen become exempt from prosecution due to the statute of limitations. Already most of the first term of the Cheney-Bush Administration is beyond the reach of justice.

I would think the real story here is not Cheney's assessment of the CIA (who cares what Dick Cheney thinks?), but rather the mountain of evidence that suggests the Vice President of the United States lied to federal investigators. And yet Patrick Fitzgerald declined to indict him. It appears that some people are above the law in the United States.

At some point you folks will have to stop clinging bitterly to the demons you've conjured up, which exist only in your mind. I know many of you find reading difficult, but you really should check out the Senate Subcommittee on Intelligence Report where you'll learn many things, but find no support for your sad and delusional conspiracy theories. I think you'll also find the next 20 years extremely painful, as George Bush (and yes Dick Cheney) experience their own, Truman-like rehabilitation as their foreign policies are increasingly vindicated by events. I implore you, leave the cave and step into the sunlight - there is a world beyond the sad TPM chat rooms filled with life's losers. The first poster was right on target. The only 'amateur hour' was the delusional chickenhawk neocons invading Iraq (among other epic failures).
Let's recap their amateur claims: WMDs, flowers & music, mission accomplished, cakewalk, invasion will pay for itself, stuff happens, etc.
As for Cheney, anyone who can shoot an old man in the face is capable of much worse than lying about revealing secret spy operations. The man belongs in jail, preferrably at The Hague.
It's a national disgrace that he is not.

Truman's been vindicated? Funny. What I've read in the past couple of years delves into some rather nasty stuff -- like the fact that the Japanese had all but officially surrendered by the time Truman went ahead and nuked them, and that his decision to go ahead was largely based on his wish to scare the living crap out of Stalin. That Cheney's attorneys would not agree with the FBI's request to "refrain from any external discussion" of the subject matter of the interview with "any unauthorized persons" [interview memo p.28] is concerning. This sort of refusal to cooperate is inconsistent with someone seeking the truth or at least staying out of the way of the truth-seekers' jobs.
